[00:00:00] Eric Goranson: It's around the house. It is the only sustainable self insulating jointless construction system from perlite in the world. And this is snapped together blocks that uses energy saving and ecological raw materials called perlite. Perlite is it's really light. It's really heat resistant. It's really cool.
[00:00:26] Eric Goranson: So what these guys did is they can, they built these blocks and it's a very precise shape that locks into each other when they. So it's really cool. There's just this Morse machine taper where things just basically click together. And so it's no need for any mortar, glue, water, anything like that. This is the biggest innovation for building homes in probably 100 years.
[00:00:49] Eric Goranson: And you can build a house in 24 hours as far as getting the walls up.
[00:00:56] Eric Goranson: When it comes to remodeling and renovating your home, there is a lot to [00:01:00] know. But we've got you covered.

[00:01:38] Eric Goranson: Welcome to The Round The House Show, the Next Generation of Home Improvement. I'm Eric G. Thanks for joining me today. If you want to find out more about us, head over to aroundthehouseonline. com where I have everything there from the radio show to the videos from the TV show, of course, the podcast, even our premium membership, which is super important as today.
[00:01:58] Eric Goranson: I thought we'd talk about some of [00:02:00] my favorite. products that could change how you do projects here in 2024. What are some of the new things out there that are on the horizon that could make that next project so much easier? And this is not sponsored thing. Not a single one of these people are paying for me to do this.
[00:02:16] Eric Goranson: But I really wanted to be able to show you some of the ideas that you can see out there. As far as new products, stuff like that could just make things easier. Some of these things you can go rent. Some of it's a new way of building homes. There are so many different things out there I want to talk about today.
[00:02:31] Eric Goranson: And the first one here is an important one. And I really used to hear this last week, put it through its paces and I've done a couple of small projects with it, but. This thing is a game changer. And this is the mud mixer. What is the mud mixer? This thing is absolutely incredible. It is the fastest and easiest multi use mixer on the market.
[00:02:56] Eric Goranson: So if you're going to be mixing up concrete or mortar or [00:03:00] stucco or pool Crete, whatever you're mixing up, this turns a three to four person job into a one person job. And it is so awesome. And you're like, Oh, it's a concrete mixer. Who cares? So, how this works is this has an electric drivetrain that basically will go through 45, 80 pound bags in an hour.
[00:03:20] Eric Goranson: And all you have to do is lift the bag up, break it open in the hopper, and it will kick it out the other end. And so it cuts your workload down by about 50%. And so you don't have to worry about batch mixing, any of that other stuff. You can just start rolling and going. And so if you're a homeowner, this is amazing.
[00:03:42] Eric Goranson: There's a lot of tool rental places out there that rent this out. If you're a contractor that does footings that does foundations or any kind of fences. Any of this stuff, curb work, whatever, this is your easy button. This works so well [00:04:00] on it's so impressive. It cleans up well, and it's just so amazing on how this thing works.
[00:04:05] Eric Goranson: And I tell you what, they are heavy duty. They'll take it and just keep going. So it's just absolutely incredible. It's just one of those tools that can change how you do it. So not that you have to go out and buy one if you're a homeowner, but I tell you what, if you are someone out there that really loves.
[00:04:23] Eric Goranson: To take on those DIY projects, get your rental center, hit them up, see if they'll carry it. And you can go over to their website. They've got a lot of great products over there. So take a look over there. It is shop. mudmix. com. And, uh, that is their little Shopify store. Their retail price on this is, uh, 3, 395 bucks.
[00:04:43] Eric Goranson: But again, you know, if you're sitting there and your contractor, about 306 bucks, 43 a month. It says with shop pay. So you can do it that way. Ships within one to two business days comes together. Really? This was the winner of the concrete contractor, 2022 top product award. And it's [00:05:00] just a solid piece of equipment.
[00:05:02] Eric Goranson: If you like to be mixing this stuff up and you're doing this day in and day out. And I tell you what, for the contractors out there that listen to the show, they're up in the mountains or have a hard time getting a concrete truck into areas. This is money right here because it just pulls around like a two wheel wheelbarrow and you could pull it around.
[00:05:19] Eric Goranson: And if you've got water and a plug in, you're good to go. So take a look at mud mixer. This thing is absolutely stunning. I love it. I think it's just a game changer when it comes to doing anything around the house. Now, here's another one here, which this is a new house construction method that's coming from Europe.
[00:05:37] Eric Goranson: Yep. And it is, uh, we just had them on the show last week. And it is one of those things that you just look at it and go, wow, why hasn't anybody figured this out? So they're based out of Poland and this is a absolutely new way to build homes. It is the only sustainable self insulating jointless construction system from perlite.
[00:05:59] Eric Goranson: In the world. [00:06:00] And this is snapped together blocks that uses energy saving and ecological raw materials called per light per light is it's really light. It's really heat resistant. It's really cool. So what these guys did is they can, they built these blocks and it's a very precise shape that locks into each other when they snap together.
[00:06:21] Eric Goranson: So it's really cool. There's just this Morse machine taper where things just basically click together. And so it's no need for any mortar, glue, water, anything like that. This is the biggest innovation for building homes in probably a hundred years. And you can build a house in 24 hours, as far as getting the walls up.
[00:06:42] Eric Goranson: And here's, what's cool about this that I like is that this stuff shows up in pallets at your job site, you're stacking it together and this eliminates so much. There's no lumber, there's no insulation. You put this stuff together. Cause it's already insulated. It's already engineered. You route out on the inside, almost [00:07:00] like you would like styrofoam, for instance, you route that out.
[00:07:03] Eric Goranson: For your plumbing, your electrical, and then you can mortar or stucco on the outside or on the inside, you can sit there, no need for drywall. You could basically skim coat the whole thing and you've eliminated all those extra materials. And so the price per square foot on a finished wall, including labor is similar to traditional methods, but most of the savings time comes from the labor and lack of additional materials needed.
[00:07:28] Eric Goranson: So this is really cool. This is one of those things that they've really designed out for building. And it's impressive, and I think this is going to be a new way to do it. We're seeing these 3D printed homes and stuff out there that I'm not the biggest fan of. I think they're cool, but this could be something A 3D printed house is basically just concrete that's getting squirted out of a machine, and the machine's putting the concrete.
[00:07:51] Eric Goranson: But to me, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Because you still got to insulate. You still got to do all the things with it. This is a click together system, no big [00:08:00] CNC machine or whatever to basically put a 3d printed house out there. I think this is going to be something that's going to change things up.
[00:08:08] Eric Goranson: I'll put that. If you want to see the video of my interview with this guy, this is really cool stuff. I'll put it up on the, uh, around the house page on around the house online. So you can take a look at it. But I think this is a new way to build. That's going to be so much greener and cost effective. And what I like about it is mold can't grow on this stuff.
[00:08:26] Eric Goranson: So I think it's going to build a healthier home for you. That's actually going to be more durable. They've been doing this in Europe. I think they've got a house in Florida. They're just starting right now. So it's coming to the U S but if you want to do a Google dive, check out system three E this is some really cool stuff.
[00:08:43] Eric Goranson: And I think it's going to be an innovative way to change building. And I think that when you're talking affordable housing and you're talking about Something durable, something inexpensive, but energy efficient. And I do like that. There's no chemicals being off gas. There's none of that stuff. It's an inert [00:09:00] product.
[00:09:01] Eric Goranson: So I think that's going to be a healthier home for you, which I think is pretty cool. That's going to make things a little bit easier for everybody. So this is new stuff. It's really brand new out there, but check out system three E neat stuff. Now, when we come back, guys, I've got a lot more here of innovative products.
[00:09:18] Eric Goranson: And even concepts coming up here for your home. And some of these things like the mud mixer can save you a ton of time and money, especially if you're a contractor or just a homeowner, wanting to tackle your own project. All of a sudden now you don't have to get to worry about getting that concrete truck or hiring a pumper truck out back where if you could get a Bobcat with a pallet of concrete bags, now all of a sudden you can start doing your own concrete work at your pace.
[00:09:43] Eric Goranson: Which I think is pretty cool. Alright, if you wanna find out more about us, head over to around the house online.com. We got a lot of cool things coming up after these important messages. Don't go anywhere, we're just starting to have fun.[00:10:00]
[00:10:09] Intro: What's up? This is Sticks It, Inia and Satchel from Steel Panther and you are listening to Around The House with Eric G. Yeah. We love Eric G and you should too.
[00:10:35] Eric Goranson: Welcome back to the around the house show. The next generation of home improvement. Thanks for joining me today. I am Eric G. Appreciate all of you out there listening on the talk media network, on the radio stations, all across the country. I think we're in five time zones now, and of course on the podcast and streaming online on the various channels that carry the around the house show.
[00:10:55] Eric Goranson: We've been out there for what, 36 years now and growing. So appreciate every one of you tuning in. [00:11:00] If you want to find out more about us or contact me, head over to around the house online. com. And of course we do have a page up on Facebook, which is around the house nation. It is our closed group up there.
[00:11:11] Eric Goranson: We are going to be reinvigorating that and changing some stuff on that coming up soon, and I can't wait to be able to share that with you. Uh, that's going to keep taking off here. We've got some good stuff going up there soon. That you don't want to miss. We've been talking about today about innovative products that could change how you build your projects for 2024.
[00:11:29] Eric Goranson: And here's one that's really cool here. Paper stone. Like what is paper stone? I've been a kitchen, a bath designer for over 30 years and so many products out there, you need to really have a fabricator do it like. Granite, quartz, slab, porcelain, marble. All these things really need to have a fabricator.
[00:11:52] Eric Goranson: It's got the CNC machine. That's got all the polishing tools. It's not cost effective for you as a homeowner, even a small contractor [00:12:00] to do that stuff. And now there's a product out there that is super durable. That looks a lot like soapstone, but you could actually machine it with regular tools. And that's, what's cool is you've got woodworking tools.
[00:12:13] Eric Goranson: If you've got good, sharp ones. This will actually work for you really well. And so what is paper stone is a phenolic resin and paper that they have made into a countertop material. Now, the cool thing with this is that it was meant actually when it first started, it was crazy when it first started, it was actually used in both bulkheads.
[00:12:36] Eric Goranson: So compartment between compartments on boats, and then they used it in skateboard ramps. So that's actually the first place I saw it as I think it was skate light. If I remember, right. And that was a product out there that would take that. And now you can get it for your countertops. Now we used to use this.
[00:12:53] Eric Goranson: Oh, probably 15 years ago, I had really started using this stuff in some commercial projects when I [00:13:00] was working in a shop in Tacoma and it was really cool. And they have just kept making it better and better. And so what's neat about this stuff. One, it's made fairly close to me. So it's made out here on the West coast.
[00:13:11] Eric Goranson: But they have got an innovative green product that is super eco friendly. It's basically recycled paper in their proprietary resin, and it's easy to work with. And I tell you what, there are so many cool things you can do with this stuff. And colors wise, they have black, they have the grays, they have blues, they have a cabernet, charcoal, you know, all these different colors.
[00:13:38] Eric Goranson: It's beautiful. And they've got a couple of different edges. So they have the solid panel edge, which is a matching. And then they have a cover ply edge, which is cool. That gives you that apple ply look on the edge of it, which is really neat. So I'll tell you what, there's some cool stuff from gun metal to denim.
[00:13:55] Eric Goranson: And this is stuff that you can use all around your house. I mean, you can use this as countertops. [00:14:00] You can do it, uh, vanity tops, kitchen, outdoor kitchen. And so what's cool is it's also made with, uh, that's certified from the forest stewardship council, FSC. Uh, which means it's also certified food safe, safe by NSF.
[00:14:18] Eric Goranson: So really it is post consumer recycled paper and old cardboard container paper. And basically they take this paper of layers and press it into stone. And I'm using air quotes here using resin. And they have resin is made from industrial by products would otherwise go into a waste stream. And it gives you this hardwood, like highly workable, non brittle.
[00:14:41] Eric Goranson: Composite panel. So this is something that's really cool. If you want to do something, you can't afford to pay thousands of dollars for somebody to build you a countertop and you want something that's going to feel warm. It's going to look good. It's going to be super durable. This stuff is absolutely amazing.
[00:14:58] Eric Goranson: And let me tell you how I worked with it. [00:15:00] And, uh, I did it for an upcoming segment. So a little teaser here, I wanted to build a countertop for my outdoor kitchen. I had already done the upper countertop out of a, uh, DuPont's porcelain product. So it is their slab porcelain product, which is cool. It's their Endura.
[00:15:17] Eric Goranson: Great stuff. But for the lower level, I wanted to do something a little bit different that complimented with it. So what I did is I made an L shaped countertop out of it. And so what you do is take your circular saw with a really good. solid blade on it and you want it really sharp. And I tell you what, it is dense.
[00:15:34] Eric Goranson: So this is like cutting really hard, hardwood. So you need to have a good blade, a good, powerful saw. I went through batteries way quicker than I would. Most other things with this stuff, it was only an inch thick. And then what you do is you basically use their epoxy to epoxy together any seams. And then you can stand it and scuff it.
[00:15:52] Eric Goranson: And then you'll put an oil wax coating on it, two coats of that. And then one coats of this, uh, beeswax rub just to [00:16:00] protect it. It is solid stuff, guys. It is gorgeous. So take a look. If you're wanting to do your own project, like, Hey, I'm pretty handy. Take a look at paper stone. It's got distribution across the U S.
[00:16:11] Eric Goranson: It is a little heavy. So if you have to have it shipped, it's going to add up a little bit, but I'll tell you what, it is awesome. Those slabs are pretty heavy and I needed something too. That was going to be, I built my outdoor kitchen countertops on the work surface there at 30 inches deep. So that turned out pretty good.
[00:16:27] Eric Goranson: So I'm really excited with how that came together. But, uh, their website is really cool. They've got a lot of good stuff over there. So just look up paper stone products. com. And they've got it all right there, all the color, all the distribution. And, uh, they're really helpful people to work with, uh, very impressive.
[00:16:45] Eric Goranson: The stuff you can do, uh, as far as countertops, bar tops, commercial spaces, if you, uh, restaurant tops, this stuff will take it. And that's, what's cool. A lab countertops being made out of it. It is great stuff. So that is just [00:17:00] something to consider. When you're looking at a countertop product. All right, guys.
[00:17:05] Eric Goranson: Well, that's something solid. Now there's a new door that we're going to talk about here in a couple minutes after we come back from break. And when you're talking bathrooms, even kitchens that have doorways into them or rooms that have a lot of ventilation, like a, uh, if you need a, an air intake for a room, let's say it's, let's say it's your mechanical room where you've got a furnace in there, or you've got a heat pump, water heater, and you need to, you don't want to have a louver door.
[00:17:31] Eric Goranson: These guys are really trick and it's a project's going to be coming up for me. And these guys are van air design doors. And, uh, when I see a door that will work with your ventilation, that is quieter than a hollow corridor, but we'll let air through, you have my undivided attention. And these guys are super cool with what they're doing.
[00:17:54] Eric Goranson: I think that's something that really makes. An innovative product for inside your house. And it might solve those ventilation [00:18:00] issues because great example, my bathroom that I have in my master bathroom, I've got a really big vent fan in there and the heated towel floor gets cold because the air comes underneath the doorway.
[00:18:10] Eric Goranson: That was my makeup air. That's the air that's coming in to replace what's venting out. And so it keeps that area cold. So this is a great solution for that. If you had a trip trick or tip like this for the show, I'd love to hear it. Head over to around the house online. Send me a message over there and we've got a meshing system where you can drop me a note.
[00:18:28] Eric Goranson: Around the house. We'll be right back after these important messages. Don't go anywhere. We come back. We'll talk more about their details of how that works. We'll do that just as soon as around the house returns. Don't go anywhere. We're just getting started. Hey, this is[00:19:00]
[00:19:01] Intro: Ron Keel, the metal cowboy from Keel, the Ron Keel band and Steeler, we are rocking around the house with Eric G.
[00:19:12] Eric Goranson: Welcome back to the around the house show guys. I'm Eric G. Thanks for tuning in today. I really appreciate it. If you're just joining us, we've been talking about innovative products that could change how you build your projects in 2024 first, though, if you want to find out more about us, head over to around the house, online.
[00:19:29] Eric Goranson: com. And of course, we've got so much information over there. I wanted to give you guys a quick update. I always keep a little bit of an open book here. And I took last week off just to be able to catch some R and R. I have been burning the candle at both ends and I can tell that if I don't stop at some point that I'm going to get sick or I'm going to get hurt.
[00:19:47] Eric Goranson: And that's exactly what happened is I got myself hurt with my knee a little bit. It's been 20 years since I've had surgery on it. And I tell you what, that. Has been a little bit of an issue. And so I ended up cracking a bone in there and got some good doctors on working [00:20:00] on how we're going to do that.
[00:20:01] Eric Goranson: Hopefully no surgery. So I don't think it's going to get in the way of production schedule at all, but just comes to a time when I get tired, I've got to take a little bit of a break to get some R and R to keep myself from getting sick with all the bugs that are going around out there. That's the last thing I need to do is come down with something that's going to make things easier.
[00:20:16] Eric Goranson: Even worse. So I appreciate your patience with the best of show last week. It was something that many of you hadn't heard. So thanks for tuning into that. And we are back with fresh new content right after the 4th of July. And I hope everybody had a great for the July weekend here. It's like, it's always weird, right?
[00:20:32] Eric Goranson: When the 4th of July ends on a, is on a Thursday because so many people just, Hey, I'm going to take a four day weekend and good for you. Some people can't. But it's always goofy. I'd much rather have it be a Monday or Friday so we can make a, a longer weekend out of it. And many of you are doing that. And my hat's off to you for being able to do that.
[00:20:51] Eric Goranson: And always good to celebrate here in the United States, the birth of this country that gave us all the freedoms we have. So hats off to everybody out there. Happy [00:21:00] birthday to the United States and uh, hopefully you had a safe and fun holiday with friends and family. Cause that's what that's about. We've been talking about these innovative products that could change how you build your projects in 2024.
[00:21:11] Eric Goranson: And one of them here, we talked about a little bit before going to break was van air design. Now these guys make these doors and they're slab doors. And I tell you what, this is the biggest thing to happen to doors. What they did is they created an offset channel in the inside of the door. So think of it looking like it has a, a routed groove out of the door, right?
[00:21:33] Eric Goranson: So it's got a horizontal route that goes through the skin of the door into the center core. What they did is they offset that. And on the opposite side of the door. On the other end, they created another one so you get air coming through that doorway. And what it did is that by going through this solid door that has air channels in it, you still have the privacy of the door being shut, but you get to go through [00:22:00] and have the ventilation.
[00:22:01] Eric Goranson: So it's really the best of both worlds how this works. So, from here on out, we've had doors that open and close, right? We'd put a stupid metal grill on the front that looked like it was on the side of an RV, and that was our way of doing it. Or we put in louvers that were considerably harder to take care of and finish and make look right.
[00:22:21] Eric Goranson: These guys create an airflow channel in the door. Which is really cool. So this will let you have a hundred up to 170 cubic feet per minute through the doorway, through this really discreet and elegant ventilation pathway, which is about equal to a 12 by 12 louver grill. And it's built inside the channel of the door.
[00:22:44] Eric Goranson: It also gives you sound privacy. The sound absorbing resonators and acoustic baffles provide this privacy that's similar to a solid door. So really cool how that keeps it quiet. And then you could put whatever size you want, custom sizes, standard. [00:23:00] You can get them instant three eights, instant three quarter.
[00:23:03] Eric Goranson: So you can have it ready to prime. You can have wood species on the outside. Works for residential, commercial, all of these things. So really cool. To find out more about these guys, check out vanairdesign. com. And they have got some amazing projects up there on there. If you look at the residential projects, for instance, beautiful doors, and they made it so they can seal up really well, but the airflow is coming through the middle of the door.
[00:23:31] Eric Goranson: So I think it's something that's really cool to be able to do. On a door system like that. So check it out. If you're looking at replacing doors, you're doing a bathroom model, or you've got a furnace room, maybe you're adding a heat pump, water heater. This could be something that makes a lot of sense to you, especially when you're trying to get ventilation.
[00:23:49] Eric Goranson: So that's key right there. All right. Now the next one here is one of my favorites. I've had it in my house over a year now, and that is Dura bond metal fencing. This is a [00:24:00] steel metal fence and it goes in. I think about that once you get going and you learn the tricks of it, it goes in faster than a wood fence.
[00:24:10] Eric Goranson: And you can just start setting and going. And once you get going on it, I tell you what it is money and it's durable. I had a, I had a unfortunate test in our ice storm this last year. So I had branches coming down everywhere. I had one land on my Cedar fence that I have existing. And it karate chopped that thing straight down to the ground, broke the two by fours, busted everything out.
[00:24:30] Eric Goranson: I had one over here, bounced off the top rail, put a little divot in it, just a little tiny divot in it. And it busted the branch in four places. So that tells you how hard that is. And the other thing I like about it too, as far as a fencing, is that it sits there and reflects noise. So it does give you some really good acoustical properties.
[00:24:53] Eric Goranson: As far as going through and basically reflecting noise. So if you're on a, uh, if you're [00:25:00] on a busy street, I think it's really cool to be able to use that and keep the road noise down. I have a bus line that goes out in front of my place. And I tell you what I just don't hear it anymore And so their website if you want to take a look at it is dura bond fencing.
[00:25:15] Eric Goranson: com. They're based They're out of the united states here, but the the product is made in australia. I believe it is awesome So this is one of the wholesale places that they will sell you this fence So they've got their color bond metal fence products is the the line of stuff they have but I tell you what it is It makes life easy.
[00:25:35] Eric Goranson: And if you look at the video, I did a video on the front of this You On the front of their webpage for them for my show out there. They've got three main colors. They have monument, which I did at my house. They've got Woodland gray, which has a little bit of a green gray to it. And dune, which is a tan khaki color with a little gray to it.
[00:25:51] Eric Goranson: And I tell you what, this stuff works so stinking. It is awesome. It will last you forever. [00:26:00] And the other thing is if you're in a wildfire area, like I am. This can really be, it's not fireproof, but I tell you what, you're not going to have this up against your house and worry about the flames chasing the cedar fence to your house.
[00:26:13] Eric Goranson: So this is really cool as far as how this works. They've got a, a, basically they've got the perfect option here for you. You can contact them, find places in your area and, uh, super tough. And it's something that can last you a lifetime out there. All you need to do to easy maintain, They're fireproof, rotproof, termiteproof.
[00:26:31] Eric Goranson: All you have to do is get out there, Once or twice a year depending on your weather. Rinse it down. I use like one of the hose end sprayers that you would use for your windows and stuff. It's got enough soap on there. If you need a brush, if you've got some dirt that's getting splashed up on it, it's easy to do.
[00:26:45] Eric Goranson: And it has got a super durable coating on it. I love this stuff. I put it at my house and I swear by it because it is tough as nails. So if you're tired of putting up fences, if you've got fences that are blowing down, that are rotting out, if it'll hold up in my weather [00:27:00] here, that's a pretty good solid Thing to say that hey if it'll take the ice, the heat, the trees, the wind, the animals We're looking pretty good.
[00:27:10] Eric Goranson: So take a look at Dura bond fencing. Now I've got one more product to mention out here. If you're doing any exterior drainage work, if you're looking for a drain across the front of your driveway or off your pool or something like that. I tell you what, there are some great designs out there where you can get the different colors, the different pieces, take a look at infinity drain.
[00:27:34] Eric Goranson: I just put one in my house for this weekend's episode of around the house Northwest. And I tell you what, they've been really patient with me because we ran into some issues that we had to get resolved. Before we tackled these projects, but man, I tell you what, infinity drain is the way to go. Whether you're doing a shower drain or anything else, this is one of those things that can really look good when you're taking a ticket on a project.
[00:27:55] Eric Goranson: And it's that finished product that looks absolutely amazing. So [00:28:00] take a look. At infinity drain, they make some great stuff for those lineal drains. If you want, I just did a 20 foot drain across the front of my garage because I have water coming down. And it's one of those things that works out really well.
[00:28:11] Eric Goranson: So take a look at an affinity drain. It is a product that delivers and I tell you what beautiful stainless steel, great finishes. All that stuff looks like a million bucks. So take some time. If you're tackling one of those projects, they made custom one for me. Cause I wanted 20 feet and I want to be able to get that.
[00:28:28] Eric Goranson: So I could get that water away from the front of my garage. When we get those spring rains, or even those summer thunderstorms, I just have, you know, 50 feet of driveway that heads right towards my garage door. I didn't build a way that way, but that's how they did it. All right, for all you people on the radio, don't go anywhere.
[00:28:42] Eric Goranson: We've got so much more when we come back after these important messages. Don't go anywhere. We've got a cool one for you.[00:29:00]
[00:29:03] Intro: It's the end of the show. Now drinkin down people, it's time to go. It's that time again. It's Last Call.
[00:29:13] Eric Goranson: Welcome back to the Around the House show, the next generation of home improvement. Thanks for joining me today. I'm Eric G. Now our last segment here in the innovative products that could change how you build your projects for 2024.
[00:29:25] Eric Goranson: Now this is a solid one here. I met these guys down at the National Hardware Show 2024 here in Las Vegas. And I saw it, I'm like, these guys have got the coolest thing ever, and they won best new product of the year. Which tells you a lot, out of the thousands of new products that you saw there, they were number one.
[00:29:47] Eric Goranson: And you know something, when it comes to creating something in your shop like a binge feist, how hard can it be, right? These guys have absolutely reinvented it. Now let's go talk to the guys from IQ vice, because [00:30:00] this thing is stunning. We are at the national hardware show in Las Vegas. Tom Scott, you have the coolest vice system out there that quite frankly, I got to put one in my house with your whole work IQ tools.
[00:30:14] Eric Goranson: Thanks for coming on today, brother.
[00:30:15] Tom Scott: Thank you, Eric. Appreciate it. It's great to be here. We're it's great to be in Vegas and we're having a. Incredible show so far,
[00:30:21] Eric Goranson: man. This has been a lot of fun. And you guys came out with, I love companies that take something that's in a shop and go, this has not been improved for a hundred years.
[00:30:33] Eric Goranson: And then you make something absolutely spectacular.
[00:30:36] Tom Scott: Yep. We look at the different tool categories and try to figure out which ones need innovating. And when we looked at vices, we realized that they really hadn't changed a whole lot. And since about 1857, there have been some changes, but I'm exaggerating.
[00:30:48] Tom Scott: Yeah. Yeah. So, and we noticed that when you're working on a vice, a lot of times you have to position your body to wherever the work is. And we said, why can't we design something that allows you to put the work where you need it, where it's in [00:31:00] the optimal position for whatever you're trying to do.
[00:31:02] Eric Goranson: Yeah.
[00:31:02] Eric Goranson: Let's put it this way, guys, just to give you a visual. I walked by the booth and they got a bike up on them on, and they got a chainsaw up on it. This is really designed to put anything that your workbench can hold on.
[00:31:12] Tom Scott: That's right. The reason we can hold like a bike and a chainsaw is the. The design of the vise mounts on the edge of the workbench and it extends down about six to eight inches off the workbench.
[00:31:23] Tom Scott: So I can get a full rotation on that bike without even touching the bench. Same on a chainsaw. I can put it wherever I want and depending on what I'm trying to do.
[00:31:30] Eric Goranson: The traditional vise, you can only get about a, about a 45 degree angle before you start getting into stuff, right? Where it's the, maybe it's the base plate or it's the arm that holds it in there.
[00:31:39] Eric Goranson: You guys just really came up with such an innovative system that I looked at and went, I'll This is the first time I've seen this and why in 2024 is something this cool finally hitting the workbench?
[00:31:52] Tom Scott: Yeah, we've been to a couple of different shows in the past two months and in each of them we've come out of there being told that we're the most [00:32:00] innovative product in the show.
[00:32:01] Tom Scott: And we're very humbled and honored by that, but we really have figured out a different way to work on things. And we have, like you said, a whole system of products that center around the vice that make work easier.
[00:32:12] Eric Goranson: Yeah. It's not just advice. You guys have so many accessories to go with it, depending on the project you're working on as well.
[00:32:17] Tom Scott: Yeah. We call it the IQ vice system and it starts with a vice with device. We have five different jaws that you can put on for task specific. projects. We have some that are made specifically for wood, some that are made for crown molding, some that are made for pipe, some that are made for tubing, etc. So there are lots of choices, lots of different things that you can do with the vise.
[00:32:39] Eric Goranson: So now you're going to ruin the vise business for all the tape manufacturers out there. For all the people that have been selling rolls and rolls of tape, trying to get people to quit using their regular bench vise to ruin the finish and the wood or anything else they're working on. You guys actually have a system that's not going to do that.
[00:32:54] Tom Scott: Yeah. The, the bare vise has jaws that are metal that you can use without any of the different [00:33:00] accessories that we have. And, but almost all of the other options keep from marring the, the, whatever material you're working on. So I can put it on a bike frame and not scratch it. Or I can work on somebody's chainsaw and not hurt it.
[00:33:12] Tom Scott: Yeah. Wow. Yeah.
[00:33:13] Eric Goranson: And that's the cool thing with this is you can go through and it doesn't matter if you're working on lawn equipment or if you're working on a fine woodworking project, you guys have the system to work with that.
[00:33:21] Tom Scott: Even things that you would never think about putting in a vice. Like snowboards, you can put a snowboard in, put it at the right angle and sharpen the edges.
[00:33:29] Tom Scott: I also have a 1970 Les, 1972 Les Paul. Oh,
[00:33:32] Eric Goranson: now you're talking.
[00:33:33] Tom Scott: We have one set of jaws that is covered with leather. So I'm putting that very expensive Les Paul in the, in, in the vice with the leather jaws. And I can position it however I want to change the strings or buff it up or whatever. And I'm not going to scratch it.
[00:33:47] Tom Scott: I'm not going to hurt that investment. So I trust it.
[00:33:50] Eric Goranson: That's a good last Paul. You don't want to hurt that or mess with frets or anything else on that. It's just too much work to go through and have to fix that stuff. So see, that's awesome. And it doesn't matter what kind of project you're [00:34:00] working on. It makes a lot of sense.
[00:34:02] Eric Goranson: And when you see it, you look at it and go, wow, okay. It's black. It's orange. It's cool. This is built just heavy duty strong.
[00:34:10] Tom Scott: That's right. It's it's all metal. Some of the parts are cast aluminum. The parts that really take the torque are solid hardened steel. So we can get up to 130 foot pounds of torque with a vise that articulates and rotates 360 degrees.
[00:34:24] Tom Scott: That's just unheard of.
[00:34:25] Eric Goranson: Yeah, I think about when some people have a hard time visualizing what that is, but that's harder. That's more torque than what you're putting on the lug nuts on your car with.
[00:34:32] Tom Scott: Yeah, I tested it out. I put a board in the vise, folded it flat down. And jumped on it and we videotaped it and the vice will rip out of the bench before you, before it bends the vice.
[00:34:44] Eric Goranson: I was going to say, yeah, you're going to either rip the bench out of the wall, knock the bench over or just completely destroy the top before you do that. You're not the weak point.
[00:34:53] Tom Scott: And I'm not exactly light either. So
[00:34:55] Eric Goranson: neither one of us are, but still it's one of those things that it's, and then you put the leverage on that on top [00:35:00] of that's a lot of torque.
[00:35:01] Eric Goranson: This is something I think is really important for people to have. You know, so many times. When you get hurt working in a workshop, it's because you didn't have that extra set of hands to, to let you do it. You're using the power tool with one hand and holding the product with the other.
[00:35:16] Tom Scott: Yep.
[00:35:17] Eric Goranson: And you're like, should have been having a device and it's just a safer work environment when you can tie down the piece you're working on.
[00:35:24] Tom Scott: Yeah. There's so many different directions I can go with that. But speaking of extra hands, we have a, another extension to the system called IQ connect, and it's a series of accessories that are mounted on flexible goosenecks, and they plug right into four ports on the vice or into ports that you can mount around your shop and accessories include a work light.
[00:35:44] Tom Scott: Oh, a magnifying glass. We're getting a little older. Might not have our glasses on all the time and a cell phone holder. And that's even, that's either for if you really know what you're doing, you're taking a video so you can send it to your friends. If you don't know what you're doing, you're looking at a video on YouTube, trying to figure it out.
[00:35:58] Eric Goranson: Dude, that is so smart because [00:36:00] how many people out there, and I even do this now, I'll get a new product that shows up at my house that I've never played with before. I'll have this pack of instructions. And I'm sitting there looking at it going, Do I want to read through 12 pages of fine print? Or do I just want to watch the video they made for it?
[00:36:14] Tom Scott: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll watch the video every time. Every one of our products that we sell, whether it's the JAWS or the mouse for the IQ Connect system or the VICE, has a QR code on it. You can just scan it and watch the video and figure out how to use it.
[00:36:25] Eric Goranson: See? There you go. That is the easy way. Because when you're sitting there, it's just so tough to go through those directions.
[00:36:30] Eric Goranson: Trying to read it. You want to play with it, right? You want to do whatever you're working with and it's smart. And of course, for the creators out there, you got a cell phone holder as well. So if you want to be recording what you're doing,
[00:36:40] Tom Scott: you
[00:36:40] Eric Goranson: could be doing that too.
[00:36:41] Tom Scott: Yeah. But with our different mounts, we have one that's magnetic.
[00:36:44] Tom Scott: You can call it any of your shop tools. You can take it and put it on your refrigerator. If you want, you can put it under a car hood, but it'll hold that light or the magnifying glass, wherever you need it. You don't, if another option is a clamp mount, you can clamp to the table. So you can work in the kit, you can work on the kitchen table, or you can work out in the shop.[00:37:00]
[00:37:00] Tom Scott: And hold, hold these accessories. So, yeah,
[00:37:02] Eric Goranson: you guys have got this dialed in. Now, where do you find this stuff out? If somebody was sitting there wanting to buy one of these,
[00:37:07] Tom Scott: yeah, we're, we just lost the company in February 1st. So we're pretty new and we're growing rapidly. We've been to true value ACE do it best and Oracle brothers.
[00:37:16] Tom Scott: Shows. And so lots of those dealers have our products now, and we also sell on our website at work, IQ tools. com. And you can find us on Amazon as well. I don't work at Q tools.
[00:37:27] Eric Goranson: That's awesome. Yeah. That, and then I sit with Amazon is for people that don't have that hardware store close by where nobody's got it.
[00:37:33] Eric Goranson: Cause you guys are new.
[00:37:34] Tom Scott: Yeah.
[00:37:34] Eric Goranson: Yeah. You can actually, you can get it and get it quick.
[00:37:36] Tom Scott: And the vice is a prime. So if you have prime, it's free shipping and yeah. Oh,
[00:37:40] Eric Goranson: there you
[00:37:40] Tom Scott: go. Yeah.
[00:37:40] Eric Goranson: That's awesome. Yeah. This is something that's really cool. And I really like what you guys are, we're doing this. And. It's not just a vise, it's a system.
[00:37:47] Tom Scott: Yep, exactly, exactly. You're talking about an extra set of hands. I live in Minnesota. I go through two cords of firewood every season. Yeah. And I got tired of buying kindling, so I make my own with the firewood that I've already [00:38:00] split. And I just mount my axe that I sharpened on the vise, by the way, at the perfect angle, upside down in the vise, and I hit it with a two and a half pound hammer, and split logs into kindling.
[00:38:11] Tom Scott: So, things like that. It's a lot much safer than That ax bouncing off the log and hitting you in the shin or whatever. How many times we've all done that stuff? Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
[00:38:18] Eric Goranson: Can I tell you what? I've also tried out those, those, they make those a firewood splitters, but they never work, right? Yeah. Oh yeah.
[00:38:24] Eric Goranson: You know what I mean? Oh, it's got an ax, but it's got that ring around it. I tested one of those in the TV show. That is a better way to do it because now you've got a really fine piece of equipment, whatever ax you have, and you can knock that out with that. But that is smart. That is a lot of fun. And I think this is just one of those things that now everybody's listening.
[00:38:41] Eric Goranson: They'll be working out in the shop going. Now I could use it right here cause now I need that extra hand.
[00:38:45] Tom Scott: Yep.
[00:38:46] Eric Goranson: And that's cool. So man, thanks for coming on today. And again, one more time on the websites, Tom Scott.
[00:38:51] Tom Scott: Yep. It's a work IQ tools. com.
[00:38:54] Eric Goranson: Tom, thanks for coming on today. This is a lot of fun, man. You guys are killing it.
[00:38:58] Eric Goranson: Keep it up. I'm going to go lobby to get [00:39:00] you guys on the favorite product. With all my friends up there that are doing the judging for that, I'm gonna see if we can get you out there 'cause uh, thank you so much. Thanks so much. That is awesome. Alright guys. I'm Eric Jean, you've been listening to Around the House
