Speaker:

Marvin: Hey folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the Articulate Fly,

Speaker:

Marvin: and we're back with the final on the water of the season with Dustin White. Dustin, how are you?

Speaker:

Dustin: Marvin, I'm doing great. How are you doing, my friend?

Speaker:

Marvin: As always, just trying to stay out of trouble, and you're in the home stretch.

Speaker:

Marvin: You've only got a few weeks left out west, right?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yep, yep. We're in the home stretch in a really fun time of year to be guiding,

Speaker:

Dustin: but yeah, the the official season is is ticking down yeah.

Speaker:

Marvin: And so you know probably got i don't know i think the last time we spoke you

Speaker:

Marvin: had good dry fly fishing and the streamer bite was pretty good what are you seeing right now.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah much of the same thing we've

Speaker:

Dustin: definitely had cooler mornings right now so you know the overnight lows are

Speaker:

Dustin: are dipping down into the 30s and so early mornings you know very very crisp

Speaker:

Dustin: very very cool takes a little bit to get a hatch going so it's it's It's probably

Speaker:

Dustin: mid-morning before you get a really,

Speaker:

Dustin: really decent hatch and start seeing some heads looking up.

Speaker:

Dustin: But if you're out on the water, they're in all of those surefire spots.

Speaker:

Dustin: You turn that bend, you see that

Speaker:

Dustin: soft core in the river, that eddy there right at the edge of the seam.

Speaker:

Dustin: Those fish are looking up. It definitely gets better throughout the day.

Speaker:

Dustin: That first kind of hatch we're seeing is primarily data.

Speaker:

Dustin: And I would say throughout the day, that's the primary bug they're really keyed on now.

Speaker:

Dustin: As the afternoon temps warm up, they start looking for caddis.

Speaker:

Dustin: So I would say in the afternoon, Marvin, is the perfect time to run kind of

Speaker:

Dustin: that tandem dry fly rig of a larger caddis as your point fly.

Speaker:

Dustin: And then running a blue wing off the back, definitely worthwhile to do that.

Speaker:

Dustin: Fish are a little bit spooky.

Speaker:

Dustin: We're in low, pretty clear water now. So, you know, folks, if you're going to

Speaker:

Dustin: out, you know, need to be able to air out a fairly significant cast on a pretty tight target.

Speaker:

Dustin: But if you do and can kind of keep some distance, those fish are very, very eager to eat.

Speaker:

Dustin: With the streamer game, we're starting to see, you know, again in the morning

Speaker:

Dustin: with those lower temps, they want to slow retrieve, more natural colors,

Speaker:

Dustin: tan, whites, some olives.

Speaker:

Dustin: Although the olive hasn't been quite as productive because we do have a lot

Speaker:

Dustin: of moss breaking free in the water.

Speaker:

Dustin: And so with that slow retrieve, seeing an olive fly, it kind of gets camouflaged

Speaker:

Dustin: into looking like, you know, the vegetation floating down the river.

Speaker:

Dustin: So sticking with not too obtrusive colors, tans, whites, slow retrieves in the

Speaker:

Dustin: morning, kicking them up in

Speaker:

Dustin: the afternoon, are having some pretty good success there in the streamers.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, so you're saying your trout aren't vegans?

Speaker:

Dustin: No, not too much. Not unless they have to be.

Speaker:

Marvin: Well, there you go. Well, before we announce the winner of the drawing,

Speaker:

Marvin: why don't you let folks know our last shout out of the season on the restaurant bar front?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, I'm going to go back to where you, myself, and our owner,

Speaker:

Dustin: Blake Jackson, had a few cocktails and I indulged myself in a pretty significant

Speaker:

Dustin: pork chop, which is Wyoming Aleworks.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, it's a good spot.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah great spot i mean killer staff a

Speaker:

Dustin: variety menu um so if you

Speaker:

Dustin: want to go pretty basic where it's just kind of a

Speaker:

Dustin: burger wings you can get that there if you want to have a great steak or a really

Speaker:

Dustin: fantastic salad um that can definitely suit your fancy but you know very extensive

Speaker:

Dustin: beer menu their drafts are great uh but also have just a great bar staff that

Speaker:

Dustin: can make a killer cocktail as well.

Speaker:

Dustin: And especially this time of year when we're fishing through town,

Speaker:

Dustin: east of town, it's a great place of proximity for us to pull off the river,

Speaker:

Dustin: go grab a bite to eat, share a drink with some friends or clients when we get off the water.

Speaker:

Dustin: So Wyoming Aleworks right on 2nd Street, a great spot that we all know and love

Speaker:

Dustin: very well here in Casper, Wyoming.

Speaker:

Marvin: And you're quite partial to the thick cut pork chop, right?

Speaker:

Dustin: Well, yeah, you, you know, you go with that bourbon apple chutney that they

Speaker:

Dustin: put on it and it's pretty hard to beat.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, I'm trying to remember. I can't remember what I had. I think I probably

Speaker:

Marvin: went red meat, but that's, that's just me.

Speaker:

Dustin: And it obviously would have been, you know, definitely a win.

Speaker:

Dustin: Everything they have there is great. And so, yeah, you can't go wrong there.

Speaker:

Dustin: So whether you want something a little or lowbrow, highbrow,

Speaker:

Dustin: folks can find something that they can enjoy there.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, there you go. And so, you know, as we always do every season,

Speaker:

Marvin: we take all the questions that were submitted, put the names in the hat,

Speaker:

Marvin: put the Google random number generator and pull out a name.

Speaker:

Marvin: And remember, we're drawing for a half a day of fishing out west with Dustin. And the winner is Paul.

Speaker:

Marvin: Paul, I hope I get your last name. I pronounced it correctly. It's Previtali.

Speaker:

Marvin: And Paul, if you'll reach out to me, and I'll reach out to you,

Speaker:

Marvin: Paul. And Paul, if you reach out to me, we'll get you hooked up and connected with Dustin.

Speaker:

Marvin: And so your season is winding down out west, but you're going to be heading

Speaker:

Marvin: east and people can go freeze with you along the alley and fish for steelhead.

Speaker:

Marvin: What's the best way for them to reach out and get on your guidebook?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, absolutely. You can, just like here out west, you can reach out to me

Speaker:

Dustin: on my Instagram at Dustin James White.

Speaker:

Dustin: Be happy to chat with you about dates. We can get you on the books.

Speaker:

Dustin: I'm guiding with Mad River Outfitters this year, so you can also give the shop

Speaker:

Dustin: a call, whatever suits your fancy, but would love to get you out in the alley

Speaker:

Dustin: in Northeast Ohio, Northwest Pennsylvania, and chase some Lake Erie Chrome.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, and experience, you know, true cold.

Speaker:

Dustin: True cold. I think the last time you and I were out on the water together,

Speaker:

Dustin: there was, I'd hate to call it a monsoon, but it came down pretty quick on us.

Speaker:

Dustin: We got out of there just in the nick of time, if I remember right.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, I think that we trusted you to walk back through the waterfall,

Speaker:

Marvin: but we went the long way down.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, yes. Set you back the path. I went back, traversed the waterfall,

Speaker:

Dustin: and then came back around and circled back and picked you up.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, that was some Indiana Jones stuff. I mean, that was kind of crazy.

Speaker:

Dustin: It came out of nowhere. Yeah, that was one of the gnarly ones we've had.

Speaker:

Dustin: But you did come away with the fish of the fall on that one.

Speaker:

Dustin: That was a memorable fish. I think the last one you got or second to last one you got was a dandy.

Speaker:

Dustin: So it capped it off pretty well before the rains came down on us. Pretty intense.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, it's kind of funny. We really did whack them. And then,

Speaker:

Marvin: of course, I was the only person who flew up. So I was basically by myself in

Speaker:

Marvin: the snow, uh, waiting to go home the next day, but, uh, but made it out and, uh, yeah, great trip.

Speaker:

Marvin: And, you know, I would say, you know, I have a newfound appreciation for Tim

Speaker:

Marvin: Horton's coffee, right?

Speaker:

Dustin: Absolutely. Yeah. You get some, some Tim Horton's, uh, coffee,

Speaker:

Dustin: some 10 bits and, and you're in good shape.

Speaker:

Marvin: Well, listen, folks, you know, love bringing these to you. Dustin and I love

Speaker:

Marvin: doing these together, you know, time to kind of shift gears depending on where

Speaker:

Marvin: you are. Steelhead's a great way to put a pretty significant bend in your rod when it's cold outside.

Speaker:

Marvin: And as I always say, you owe it to yourself to get out there and catch a few.

Speaker:

Marvin: Tight lines, everybody. Tight lines, Dustin.

Speaker:

Dustin: Tight lines, Marvin. Thanks so much.
