[00:00:00] Eric Goranson: Welcome to around the house with Eric G and Caroline B. This is the midweek special. This is where Caroline and I, we just kind of ramble and rant about things going on in the middle of the week. And then we'll of course, we'll talk about what's happening on Saturday

[00:00:17] Caroline Blazovsky: Caroline. Hello, everybody.

[00:00:20] Caroline Blazovsky: Welcome.

[00:00:21] Eric Goranson: No kid, man, I, I need a break and I'm heading out on vacation for a couple of days, which will be awesome. But what a busy weekend for me, I had Friday night, I had the, uh, Chris Stapleton concert Saturday went out and watched the NASCAR infinity car road, race out in the rain and then went and saw top.

[00:00:44] Eric Goranson: Yeah on Saturday night. Now I'm heading up to the beach for a couple of

[00:00:47] Caroline Blazovsky: days, top gun. I don't agree. Everybody else thinks it's so great. I thought the beginning was

[00:00:51] Eric Goranson: totally boring much better than the first one. So much better. The first one, I think it's so good,

[00:00:59] Caroline Blazovsky: but I'm [00:01:00] like, I don't know. I thought it was slow.

[00:01:01] Caroline Blazovsky: I liked the ending. The beginning was boring. I could have like fallen asleep and then the middle got good. And

[00:01:06] Eric Goranson: then again, it had me hooked in from start to finish.

[00:01:11] Caroline Blazovsky: And the love story. See, I'm a love story person, and that was just,

[00:01:15] Eric Goranson: I don't, I, I don't, I, I don't want to make a, uh, I don't want to make top gun into a romcom.

[00:01:22] Caroline Blazovsky: Penny Benjamin.

[00:01:24] Eric Goranson: No, I thought it was amazing. I thought it was amazing. See, there's the difference? Well, obviously a lot of people think it's amazing because it's breaking records on week one and weeks. I don't throw

[00:01:37] Caroline Blazovsky: me under the bus. Why don't you? They don't know it's going to be the way it is until they show up.

[00:01:42] Caroline Blazovsky: I showed up. I just

[00:01:44] Eric Goranson: rumor, I mean, week two, they say if week two, they've heard everybody talk about it, right?

[00:01:48] Caroline Blazovsky: Yeah. PR that's all PR great. The greatest movie ever.

[00:01:53] Eric Goranson: There we go. Speaking of that. Oh man. So anyway, w w racing was awesome, [00:02:00] you know, typical Portland spring, where we had rain all through the race, which made it for pretty good bumper cars had a great time there.

[00:02:07] Eric Goranson: But now that it's summertime, I want to talk about this. They released today salt and straw, which is here in my area. They are always mentioned by like Oprah and all the stuff out there as the, you know, the luxury ice cream. And we have these salt and straps. They're known for the wacky flavors that taste good.

[00:02:27] Eric Goranson: Hmm. So here is the first one on that they have, and this is kind of meant for ticket out on your picnic. You know, this is their picnic cinnamon and honey fried chicken. Oh yeah. Slightly savory and spiced with sudden pops of crackling texture, the ice cream brings together an unprecedented marriage of ice cream and fried chicken.

[00:02:51] Eric Goranson: You didn't think he even needed it until you tied this. So we, they start with fresh croissants, torn into bits, deep fried chicken fat [00:03:00] till crispy perf. So they take the deep fried chicken. So you got the crust, like, you know, like when you get KFC, Kentucky fried chicken, you have the chunks of, of course

[00:03:10] Caroline Blazovsky: that's the, all the little nuggets in there

[00:03:12] Eric Goranson: in the middle of it.

[00:03:13] Eric Goranson: Oh my God. In the middle of vanilla ice cream. And then they got a little heat in there to make it a little spicy. And it's made with a Zell's fried chicken, which is another Portland favorite here. That's a Oprah's. Fried chicken place in the country.

[00:03:31] Caroline Blazovsky: This is starting to sound like Eric's meals like pineapple mixed with Saracha mixed a little.

[00:03:36] Caroline Blazovsky: Yeah. You know, tri tip, you could make your own ice cream,

[00:03:39] Eric Goranson: Eric. So the next one chocolate mussino cherry pie. Oh, so they've got chocolate, chocolate ice cream spiked with Pacino, Brandi, and hunks of rustic cherry slab pilots. Turn your phone off and

[00:03:56] Caroline Blazovsky: calling me, sorry guys. What the heck? [00:04:00]

[00:04:01] Eric Goranson: So it's got it's very cool.

[00:04:03] Eric Goranson: So it's basically Brandy and rustic cherry pie slab, all mixed in. It's pretty my FA oh man, here we go. It's got my, I have this face. Liquor that I put in my it's a Walnut liquor that I put in my whiskey drinks. It has my favorite stone barn distillery. Three-year aged green Walnut lacunar oh, with Oregon walnuts and I'm sold.

[00:04:27] Eric Goranson: There's my new one. I got to go to the store and get that today.

[00:04:30] Caroline Blazovsky: C all I think is when I hear Walnut, I get migraines from walnuts. So I'm like, oh, it's too massive

[00:04:35] Eric Goranson: headache. So don't go too much. Debt, dive deep. I'll give you the three other flavors, deviled, egg custard, and smoked black. NA Roseanne water melon sorbet.

[00:04:46] Eric Goranson: That sounds good. And then baked Brie and fig cheesecake. My

[00:04:51] Caroline Blazovsky: God. This is amazing.

[00:04:53] Eric Goranson: Yeah. And these fights, what's the website, salt and straw.com. It's

[00:04:59] Caroline Blazovsky: [00:05:00] amazing. Get some ice cream people.

[00:05:02] Eric Goranson: Oh. So good. So good. So I was talking to my buddy, I went to high school, then I'm going to leave names out of this just because in cities, because, um, we don't want listeners.

[00:05:14] Eric Goranson: If we're talking about somebody that's listening, we don't want to make this personal, if you know what I mean? So he moved into a development and the houses are pretty close together. You know how these new Homeland developments are, where they come in and, and, and put a bunch of homes in. And they're small lot.

[00:05:32] Eric Goranson: So he's had this battle with this 80 year old ask next door neighbor from her, walking out in the backyard and throw in bird seed all over the backyard in the rats and the rodents to putting all these bird feeders on the fence, which when you put all that many bird feeders, he ends up having bird poop all over his deck and everything else, because they're all hanging around there.[00:06:00]

[00:06:01] Eric Goranson: Now she's been coming over and knocking on his door and freaking out because he has a fire pit in the backyard and she doesn't like the smoke . So now they've got multiple HOA complaints going back and forth because the HOA is involved and there's no rules against that, but she's mounted all this stuff up above the top of the fence, like an old Bedford.

[00:06:27] Eric Goranson: Clem roses up on which you can't have. And so I'm watching this battle Royale between two neighbors on the HOA. And I think on those situations, everyone is going to lose. That's

[00:06:42] Caroline Blazovsky: terrible. So what's our gripe though, so. Sure. Great. But she doesn't want smoke, but she's allowed to get attract birds, which cause bird mites.

[00:06:50] Caroline Blazovsky: And let me tell you, if you get bird mites in your home, you'll be calling. You'll end up with bites all over your body. So birds actually carry mites. That can be really, really [00:07:00] highly, um, infest in it and just cause infestations in your home. But anyway, so what's her gripe. She doesn't want smoke. And

[00:07:08] Eric Goranson: I came out there with the fire pit and so she was complaining that I guess in that county, the fire pit has to be, um, if it's within 15 feet of a fence, it has to be that wood fence has to have like.

[00:07:22] Eric Goranson: A metal piece on it to keep it from burning. And my aunt's a small fire pit, 15 feet, really. But anyway, there's, I don't think the backyard has 15 feet on it, so that's kind of the issue, but, uh, he's in the middle of this battle Royale with him and, and she comes over and, and knocks on the door and starts screaming.

[00:07:41] Eric Goranson: They've asked, they've actually called the police. It's getting to be interesting and I feel bad for everybody involved, but. Everybody be good with your neighbors out there. Figure stuff out, talk it out. Don't have these kinds of battles because it's life is too stressful by itself. And to put in the battle to neighbors, I have the best neighbors in the world.

[00:07:59] Eric Goranson: I love my [00:08:00] neighbors here. And, uh, when you have bad neighbors or a bad relationship with the neighbor, maybe you're the bad neighbor, but it's one of those things. Just everybody be cool.

[00:08:12] Caroline Blazovsky: Yeah. Now that sounds not

[00:08:14] Eric Goranson: enjoyable, not enjoyable. One thing that's enjoyable as I'm watching lumber futures prices

[00:08:22] Caroline Blazovsky: coming down

[00:08:23] Eric Goranson: crashing, like as of right now, it recording here on the 7th of June man down to 5 89 at this point.

[00:08:38] Eric Goranson: I feel like

[00:08:38] Caroline Blazovsky: I'm gambling or like playing the lottery. I'm like, come on guys. Cause I got to build a deck and I'm waiting until it like hits rock bottom. I need

[00:08:45] Eric Goranson: it. We are, this is the lowest it's been. Let me look here and see what's our, what's our annual, so our annual man, we're looking good here. Yeah, this is um, [00:09:00] yeah, the law.

[00:09:02] Eric Goranson: So here's the range and this, this is unlike a thousand board feet. The lowest it's been in the last year and 52 weeks, 448, the highest 1,477. Now we're back down to 5 91 where in March 3rd, we were at 1465. Keep going, what that keep coming. That's where we get back into that, you know, a few bucks for a two by four or.

[00:09:35] Eric Goranson: Eight or nine bucks for, for OSB versus 30.

[00:09:40] Caroline Blazovsky: Remember when it was $78 for a piece of OSB imply with

[00:09:43] Eric Goranson: yeah. I mean, it's crazy how much now, now keep in mind. Let's, let's talk about how lumber futures prices work for a minute. This does not affect all lumber, but it's really the commodity-based staff such you're two by fours, your two by [00:10:00] sixes.

[00:10:01] Eric Goranson: And, you know, that's the stuff that it really starts to affect in framing. So this is not maybe your finished Oak plywood, but when you look at that, so, right, like right now, for instance, a sheet of OSB at my home Depot is 28 bucks and 25 cents. Now this stuff here was bought a month ago, right. So it was on the future prices for a month ago.

[00:10:27] Eric Goranson: So if I do that and go back and look. And how that affects things a month ago, our lumber future prices were double what they were now. So I would expect to see, you know, we're going to be back down. Yeah. We'll see $12 plywood at this pace by the end of summer, because I think that's August, September delivery.

[00:10:53] Eric Goranson: So you kind of get an idea of where that's at. So as soon as we burn through the inventory that we have. That's kind of how [00:11:00] that works.

[00:11:02] Caroline Blazovsky: So I should plan to build my deck in like September, October.

[00:11:06] Eric Goranson: Uh huh. That's where you going to see that stuff going down. So I'm excited about that. That's going to be cool.

[00:11:15] Eric Goranson: And then, uh, oh, there was another recall that I caught two out there. If you've got an electric luxury refrigerator with ice maker, take a look at it. They're putting, uh, there's some failures in the parts in the ice maker and it's putting plastic in the ice. Oh my gosh. They'd be calling me or injury hazard.

[00:11:35] Eric Goranson: Yeah,

[00:11:35] Caroline Blazovsky: don't do that. I've choked on plastic before. It's not a good plan. That's not good. Um, but speaking of the lumber prices going down, I filled up with the gas pump this morning, $5 and 8 cents a gallon. So we've got low building with high gas.

[00:11:52] Eric Goranson: So it's bad. I wish I could fill up. I think I'm at a five 50 a [00:12:00] gallon or so here.

[00:12:01] Eric Goranson: Five 40. A gallon here on gas. So, uh, you're about 50 cents cheaper a gallon than we are. The only

[00:12:07] Caroline Blazovsky: reason we're cheaper is because we've got a new, York's got a big petroleum hub and same with like, if you're down by Texas Houston area, um, Austin, those places tend to be a little bit cheaper too, but I heard San Francisco this morning, $7 a gallon.

[00:12:21] Caroline Blazovsky: And I know there's a couple places in California where it's $10 a gallon, but like, those are small. Like boutiquey kind of places where there aren't many gas stations, but yeah. $7 a gallon in San Francisco.

[00:12:33] Eric Goranson: Yeah. Up the street here at my shell, Chevron, you know, the big, the big ones, um, about 5 55, 5 56, a gallon is where that's at.

[00:12:43] Eric Goranson: I went and filled up my SUV, which is diesel on Sunday. And that was insane because usually it's 50, 55 bucks to fill that thing up. 120 bucks to fill that thing up at 5 [00:13:00] 69, a gallon of diesel at Costco. And that's the cheapest diesel I can get around. And they're

[00:13:05] Caroline Blazovsky: saying that they don't really, they thought that this was gonna affect the vacation season per se, but because we had been so backed up because of the pandemic, people are still taking these trips.

[00:13:15] Caroline Blazovsky: So it'll be interesting to see where this hits us, like how. Society cause, I mean, you can't expect something to go to $10 a gallon without implication. Right.

[00:13:24] Eric Goranson: You know, what'll happen is you'll have people going out a little bit less, which means that'll hurt restaurants, maybe a less concert, or to, you know,

[00:13:32] Caroline Blazovsky: I feel bad for these, the poor restaurant people that got killed during the pandemic.

[00:13:36] Caroline Blazovsky: Now they're going to get killed during the gas, gas price increases assistance.

[00:13:41] Eric Goranson: Yeah. It's, it's insane, you know, and the problem is, is now you're going to see. Think about how that affects stuff. So anything you're getting trucked of course is expensive, but even your, your Uber ride to the airport, or, you know, ordering food for takeout to have it delivered to your house.

[00:13:58] Eric Goranson: You know, when you, when you double their [00:14:00] cost, that's going to be expensive.

[00:14:04] Caroline Blazovsky: Watch out people, Satan, those wallets.

[00:14:07] Eric Goranson: Here's my little prediction. And an, I am not, this is not financial advice. I don't take it as that because I'm not licensed or insured for that. But here's my best. Guess what we're going to see right now.

[00:14:17] Eric Goranson: We're going to see in many, generally across the U S we're going to see new home construction, come grinding to a halt and get slower because we've seen interest rates. I mean, we'll see interest rates on homes. I think by the next year, if we're not careful, it'll be eight, nine, 10%.

[00:14:36] Caroline Blazovsky: No, we haven't seen that for such a long time.

[00:14:39] Caroline Blazovsky: You know, people are so used to this three, four, even 2%.

[00:14:44] Eric Goranson: So, so then about singing about this and, and I don't want to sound, this is just easy math. So bear with me. If you were looking at a million dollar house. Okay. And in many metropolitan areas, a million dollar house, isn't a lot of house, [00:15:00] right. You know, I mean, our, my house, my neighborhood here does not have the biggest craziest houses.

[00:15:07] Eric Goranson: It's expensive. There's a lot of million dollar houses that are 2200 square foot houses that are, that are on a, less than a quarter acre size lot. That's a very generic, normal house. It's just an expensive neighborhood. But if you think about what the interest rates have done over the last couple of months to that, that has added with your typical, like 20% down payment, that's been crazy.

[00:15:30] Eric Goranson: And you're going to finance that house that is added about a thousand dollars to the monthly house.

[00:15:38] Caroline Blazovsky: And you're looking, we were just looking at, like, if you're paying, let's just say $600,000 for a house that your monthly payment will be around $5,000 a month, depending on you know, your taxes and all of that.

[00:15:49] Caroline Blazovsky: But you're looking at 5,000 a month for, and that's not a big house. I mean, that's not, you know, here a $600,000 houses, not anything, um, big or large, you know, [00:16:00] it's an

[00:16:00] Eric Goranson: average. So I think what you're going to see is you're still going to have, see people moving out of crime areas. You're gonna see families moving out of crime areas, go into the burbs, getting places that they can raise their family and feel safer.

[00:16:13] Eric Goranson: But I think what you're going to see, and we're seeing that in my neighborhood now, but nationally, I think you're going to see people going into remodeling a lot more and maybe not moving because they're looking at the interest rate going, wow. You know, when I bought this house or had it, reafied I'm at three and a half percent or 3% on this morning.

[00:16:31] Eric Goranson: Wow. If I go, if I move, I'm going to be at eight, nine, 10%. Right now, that's not, I'm going to stay here. I'm going to make this house beautiful. Amazing. Awesome. And then when interest rates come back down again and then we'll

[00:16:44] Caroline Blazovsky: move. No, it's so good for us. So there's going to be more people wanting to listen to home improvement, podcasts and radio shows.

[00:16:50] Caroline Blazovsky: Cause we're going to show you how to make it hot in there, make it good. Your house is going to be a sexy,

[00:16:56] Eric Goranson: you don't follow those flipping shows. Those are the ones that are trying to get a couple [00:17:00] dollars. But we're going to help you get that through and make sure that we've got everything done correctly so you can enjoy it.

[00:17:06] Eric Goranson: And more importantly, you can do it, right? So you get the money back out of some of that. When you go to sell it down the road,

[00:17:16] Caroline Blazovsky: one more thing we got to touch on and Eric, we're going to do more on this because both of us don't know. I know someone who bought a hydrogen car in San Francisco. I think this is exciting. And the, and, and you get six years free. They give you a call. And basically, I don't know where you go to get hydrogen, but in San Francisco, I guess they have stations, but if you purchase a car and the incentives are insane, you get six years free gas.

[00:17:39] Caroline Blazovsky: If you get a hydrogen

[00:17:40] Eric Goranson: car right now, you don't. My biggest concern is on that. I don't

[00:17:44] Caroline Blazovsky: know. But do you know this for sure? Like, do we know that these new cards blow up? That's what I thought it was my first and my first thought was like, I was going to blow up, but I don't know.

[00:17:54] Eric Goranson: I mean, here's my, it's something I'm worried.[00:18:00]

[00:18:01] Eric Goranson: I mean, that's, that's my concern, right? I mean, you look at it's flammable, it's a gas, right. You know, of course you've got gasoline, that's fine. A wall and you see cars run around on propane. You see them running on natural gas, but that, that makes me nervous. That makes me nervous. You know, it's

[00:18:29] Caroline Blazovsky: food for thought though.

[00:18:30] Caroline Blazovsky: You know what makes me nervous thinking about charging my electric car while I'm sitting in it at one of the like high energy, you know, spots where you're sitting in that car while you are charging your vehicle, that EMF exposure to me must be crazy. That doesn't appeal to me. I think I'd go with the hydrogen car and take my chances.

[00:18:50] Eric Goranson: No, let's get down to the real reason. It's not the EMF. It's not that you can't even keep your cell phone charged during the day. [00:19:00] Well, that too, you getting on the phone gone Vinny. My car's dad and you're out in the middle of some Parkway someplace is probably high.

[00:19:13] Caroline Blazovsky: I think I'm going to get a hydrogen car.

[00:19:15] Caroline Blazovsky: You may only know me for like another year, but

[00:19:21] Caroline Blazovsky: I think it's cool.

[00:19:22] Eric Goranson: Wasn't the Hindenburg filled with hydrogen. Come on. I'm asking a question. I don't know. Think

[00:19:30] Caroline Blazovsky: it was, you were the one that reminded me of the Pinto's number when the Pinto's blew up. Got

[00:19:35] Eric Goranson: hit down here. Pintos and the Vegas they've got there. Those things were, you know, lighten up. I don't know, but

[00:19:41] Caroline Blazovsky: think about it.

[00:19:42] Caroline Blazovsky: People, hydrogen cars I I'm in, I think I'm in. I'm sold.

[00:19:47] Eric Goranson: Yeah. But then they're just going to make hydrogen more expensive.

[00:19:51] Caroline Blazovsky: And then we're going to have massive amounts of water by-product which will just increase water in the atmosphere.

[00:19:57] Eric Goranson: It's just

[00:19:57] Caroline Blazovsky: mold. Yeah. We're going to be like, [00:20:00] what's that diggaba when in star wars, when the planet's like a swamp.

[00:20:07] Eric Goranson: Yeah, it

[00:20:07] Caroline Blazovsky: is. It's like, I think it's called diggaba. It's like a planet where it's just completely swampy. I think that's going to be up.

[00:20:16] Eric Goranson: So the Hindenburg was originally designed to be filled with helium, but because of U S export restrictions on helium to Germany, it was instead filled with hydrogen

[00:20:32] Eric Goranson: and. The official cause of the Hindenburg disaster was due to a discharge of atmospheric electricity near a gas leak on the ship surface. I don't want that in my car.

[00:20:45] Caroline Blazovsky: So wait, what? There was a leak and then it

[00:20:48] Eric Goranson: ignited. Yeah. It's self ignited because of static.

[00:20:52] Caroline Blazovsky: Oh, so you can't use your cell phone and drive around in your hydrogen guards

[00:20:56] Eric Goranson: play.

[00:20:57] Eric Goranson: I'm not saying that at all, but that's, you [00:21:00] know,

[00:21:01] Caroline Blazovsky: like don't take your sheets directly. I know your clothes out directly out of the dryer and then pop in your car. Cause there might be an issue

[00:21:10] Caroline Blazovsky: like

[00:21:10] Eric Goranson: static cling. Yeah. But here's the, here's the problem I have, I have no idea where I would even drive to, to go fill up my hydrogen. You're closer to finding an electrical charger is right. You're going to have to

[00:21:24] Caroline Blazovsky: drive to San Francisco. How far is that?

[00:21:28] Eric Goranson: 14 hours. 12 hours. Yeah. No,

[00:21:32] Caroline Blazovsky: hold on Julie. I'm going out to get gas.

[00:21:34] Caroline Blazovsky: I'll be back

[00:21:35] Eric Goranson: and forth. Yeah, I see it. Yeah. Which of course you don't have enough range for that. So, yeah. That's, I mean, that's awesome, but I I'm going to put that. I'll be honest. I'll put the hydrogen cars. Kind of when they used to be running the, uh, when you used to be able to get the flex fueled cars or run on the alcohol on the , it was interesting, but you could never find bumps for it or was 85% ethanol and 15% fuel.[00:22:00]

[00:22:00] Caroline Blazovsky: He's not talking me out of it. I'm still going to, I think I'm going to go with one. If I can get a phone, I just need to get pumped nearby.

[00:22:11] Eric Goranson: Nope. Nope. I'm good. I'm good. I don't need to, it's just one more thing. One more thing that I see being an issue, and I'll just say that you're contributing to mold everywhere by adding more, uh, more

[00:22:25] Caroline Blazovsky: water. I looked it up near the end of the clone wars, the Jetta grand master Yoda traveled to the planet.

[00:22:30] Caroline Blazovsky: Diego. After hearing the voice of the deceased Jedi master Kwan gone, Jean

[00:22:38] Eric Goranson: there, we guess

[00:22:40] Caroline Blazovsky: take a bus. It exists.

[00:22:42] Eric Goranson: Yep. Absolutely. Well, coming up on Saturday, we've got a killer show ahead. If you're thinking about doing some father's day shopping, we have your ultimate buyer's guide and our number.

[00:22:55] Caroline Blazovsky: Eric has some of the greatest solutions. So if you're like me and my dad's hard to get [00:23:00] for, you got to check it out.

[00:23:01] Caroline Blazovsky: We've got you covered to get out there now.

[00:23:04] Eric Goranson: Even some, uh, even some, uh, new age stuff for the garage.

[00:23:12] Caroline Blazovsky: No,

[00:23:12] Eric Goranson: it's not hippie. You're not. Yeah, I know. And I was just kidding, but, and then our number two, we're going to be talking about dreams and. You know, designing that cool shower drain if you're doing a shower or even using it on your outside deck or driveway. So those cool linear drains, we'll be talking to a infinity drain.

[00:23:31] Eric Goranson: That's going to be a fun one as well. No. And

[00:23:33] Caroline Blazovsky: you learn a lot, like, I didn't think you think what's a drain. What do I need to know about a drain, but there is a lot to know, and there's a lot to know in your design. So I learned a lot on that show. And that's that's.

[00:23:44] Eric Goranson: That is a fun one. That is a fun one. So you don't want to miss that coming up Saturday on, around the house and you can catch it on the radio or the podcast on any podcast player, including the one you're listening to right now.

[00:24:06] Caroline Blazovsky: a vacation though, but there we go. I'll tell you about that on a different episode. All right.
