Speaker:

Speaker:

Speaker:

grace and style podcast. I'm Valerie Hatcher, and I'm here

Speaker:

with empowering tips, inspiring stories, and a whole lot of

Speaker:

fun just for us, women over 50. So grab

Speaker:

your favorite beverage, turn up the volume, and let's get

Speaker:

started. Today, we're

Speaker:

diving into the topic of maintaining a

Speaker:

youthful appearance after 50. Aging

Speaker:

is a natural and beautiful process, but

Speaker:

that doesn't mean that we can't embrace it while

Speaker:

looking and feeling our absolute best.

Speaker:

Let's explore how you can defy

Speaker:

age and shine brighter than ever.

Speaker:

As we hit our fifties, we may start noticing changes in our

Speaker:

skin, hair, and overall appearance.

Speaker:

Fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and loss

Speaker:

of elasticity are common challenges

Speaker:

that many women face. It can be frustrating

Speaker:

to see these changes and and wonder

Speaker:

how to combat them effectively.

Speaker:

But fret not. I've got 5

Speaker:

practical, easy to implement, and unexpected

Speaker:

tips that will help you turn back the clock and

Speaker:

maintain a youthful glow. From skin care

Speaker:

routines to lifestyle habits and mindset shifts,

Speaker:

these tips are are tailored to help you look and feel

Speaker:

your best every day. So let's start. Tip number

Speaker:

1. It's about being skincare savvy.

Speaker:

We all know the basics, cleanse, moisturize,

Speaker:

protect, but it's time to to

Speaker:

level up our skincare game. Let's transform

Speaker:

our our bathrooms into mini spas and and

Speaker:

indulge in a little self care magic.

Speaker:

Now I've personally fallen head over heels

Speaker:

for hyaluronic acid serums.

Speaker:

Seriously, this stuff is like a tall drink of

Speaker:

water for your skin. It clumps and hydrates

Speaker:

and smooths like nobody's business. And if you're

Speaker:

dealing with uneven skin tone or or texture,

Speaker:

then niacinamide is

Speaker:

your new best friend. It it brightens,

Speaker:

calms inflammation, and even helps reduce the

Speaker:

appearance of wrinkles. Remember,

Speaker:

skin care is a journey, not a destination.

Speaker:

So have fun with it, explore new ingredients, and don't

Speaker:

be afraid to splurge on a product that makes

Speaker:

you feel like a $1,000,000. I

Speaker:

am definitely one these days who will test out

Speaker:

new products. For the longest, I found a

Speaker:

line, and I stayed with it. And I'm still

Speaker:

pretty loyal to skin care lines, but

Speaker:

then after a while, I can tell when my skin

Speaker:

needs something different. And at that point, then I

Speaker:

kinda go shopping and testing out, to see what's

Speaker:

the latest products that are out there. And

Speaker:

trust me, I have gotten some that I didn't really think did

Speaker:

what I needed from the standpoint of moisturizing,

Speaker:

or lately, my biggest thing in skincare that I've

Speaker:

been working on is the under eye area,

Speaker:

either bags under my eyes or lines

Speaker:

under my eyes. So finding the right product. So, yes,

Speaker:

it's a journey, but just just explore. Spend

Speaker:

a little then once you find the product you like, it it may

Speaker:

be costly at this this stage in our lives, but

Speaker:

more than likely, it's going to be worth it. Tip number 2

Speaker:

is healthy hair. Now who says

Speaker:

that at this age, we have to chop off our hair

Speaker:

or or dye away our grays?

Speaker:

Please. If you love your long hair, then flaunt

Speaker:

it with pride. If your silver strands are

Speaker:

shimmering, then embrace that natural beauty. The

Speaker:

key is to find a hairstyle that makes you

Speaker:

feel like the confident, radiant woman that you

Speaker:

are. Maybe it's a sleep bob,

Speaker:

or maybe it's a playful pixie cut

Speaker:

or even curls, your natural curls. It could be

Speaker:

a vibrant new color or embracing your

Speaker:

natural shade. Over the past few

Speaker:

years, I have totally embraced braids.

Speaker:

I remember there was a time when I wouldn't wear braids

Speaker:

because I didn't think that they were me. But

Speaker:

once I started, I actually love them,

Speaker:

and I can't get out of them in the

Speaker:

summer. Usually, braids are my summer style because

Speaker:

it also one, it's easy to maintain, and then it

Speaker:

gives my natural hair a break from, like, flat irons

Speaker:

and heat and ponytails. Tip number

Speaker:

3, I'm a call it the wardrobe

Speaker:

wisdom where we dress for joy and

Speaker:

not for our age. Let's be honest. The

Speaker:

whole concept of age appropriate dressing is

Speaker:

outdated, and frankly, it's a bit boring. It's time

Speaker:

to to break free from those fashion rules and wear

Speaker:

what makes us feel alive, confident, and

Speaker:

beautiful. If you love bold colors, then rock

Speaker:

them. If if you're drawn to playful prints,

Speaker:

then go for it. If you feel most confident in

Speaker:

classic styles, then embrace them. If you're

Speaker:

like me and you prefer dresses above the knee,

Speaker:

then as Bobbi Brown said, it's your prerogative. Do

Speaker:

it. The key is to choose clothes

Speaker:

that fit well, that that flatter your figure,

Speaker:

and that express your unique personality.

Speaker:

Now I've mentioned before that for some reason, I used

Speaker:

to shy away from bright colors. I

Speaker:

definitely leaned more toward black, but then I

Speaker:

realized, girl, life is too short to wear boring clothes,

Speaker:

and I wanted to add some vibrancy and prints in my

Speaker:

life. Now my closet reflects

Speaker:

a lot more color and prints, and I am actually loving

Speaker:

it. Tip 4 is

Speaker:

radiate wellness from the inside out.

Speaker:

True beauty isn't just about what we put on our

Speaker:

bodies. It's about what we put in

Speaker:

our bodies. So think of think of

Speaker:

your body as a symphony orchestra, and

Speaker:

each healthy choice you make is a beautiful note

Speaker:

that that contributes to the overall harmony.

Speaker:

This, that can you imagine that? I know. That was pretty ignorant.

Speaker:

I think that was a good analogy if I have to say so myself.

Speaker:

Okay. So here are some actionable tips.

Speaker:

Hydration is key, so make sure to

Speaker:

drink plenty of water throughout the day and use

Speaker:

moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and plump.

Speaker:

Now I've heard that applying the moisturizer

Speaker:

to damp skin can actually better lock

Speaker:

in hydration. Remember, hydration

Speaker:

from the inside out is just as important.

Speaker:

So aim for at least 8 glasses of

Speaker:

water a day. I know some people might be saying,

Speaker:

jeez, 8. That's a lot. And but once you get used to it,

Speaker:

it really isn't that bad. I always keep a

Speaker:

water bottle with me, and I actually sometimes jazz it

Speaker:

up with some lemon slices or or cucumber to make

Speaker:

it a bit more appealing. So if you don't already,

Speaker:

then you try to keep a water bottle handy.

Speaker:

Protect your skin. Wear, sunscreen

Speaker:

daily even on cloudy days, and avoid prolonged

Speaker:

sun exposure to prevent premature

Speaker:

aging and skin damage. This really is a

Speaker:

nonnegotiable. Wear a broad

Speaker:

spectrum SPF or at least at

Speaker:

of at least 30. And don't forget

Speaker:

about your hands and your neck because these areas often

Speaker:

show signs of aging first. So give them some

Speaker:

some extra TLC. I remember my mom used to

Speaker:

say that you could tell how old someone was by

Speaker:

looking at their hands. And so, therefore, I'm very self

Speaker:

conscious about my hands. I try to make sure that they're protected and

Speaker:

they're they're moisturized so that my hands don't

Speaker:

look like it's the first part of my body that's aging. Protecting

Speaker:

your skin from the sun is one of the best ways to maintain a

Speaker:

youth full experience. And then let's talk about

Speaker:

nourishing from within. Eating healthy

Speaker:

plays a huge role in how our skin looks.

Speaker:

Include berries, leafy greens, and nuts in your diet

Speaker:

to fight free radicals and to promote healthy

Speaker:

skin. These antioxidant,

Speaker:

rich foods help keep your skin looking fresh and

Speaker:

vibrant. It's a foundation

Speaker:

in youth in a glass, really.

Speaker:

Also, consider adding fatty fish like salmon

Speaker:

to your diet twice a week for those beneficial

Speaker:

omega threes, plus they're delicious.

Speaker:

And then get moving. Stay active with regular

Speaker:

exercise to boost your circulation, tone muscles,

Speaker:

and maintain a healthy weight. Find activities that you enjoy.

Speaker:

We've talked about this before. Maybe it's dancing, it's

Speaker:

swimming, or just taking a brisk walk every day.

Speaker:

Try to aim for at least a 150 minutes of

Speaker:

moderate intensity aerobic activity

Speaker:

weekly, and that's actually recommended by the CDC.

Speaker:

Remember, exercise isn't just for a good body,

Speaker:

it keeps you you energetic and vibrant too, so stick with

Speaker:

it. And then prioritize self

Speaker:

care and relaxation to reduce stress levels, improve

Speaker:

sleep quality, and enhance

Speaker:

overall well-being. Make time for activities

Speaker:

that help you unwind, whether it's reading a good

Speaker:

book, taking a bubble bath, practicing

Speaker:

meditation, or just even taking a

Speaker:

few deep breaths that can help. Stress can

Speaker:

really take a toll on your appearance. Don't

Speaker:

underestimate the power of quality sleep.

Speaker:

Aim for about 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

Speaker:

Now I'm getting better with getting in sleep.

Speaker:

I'm not at 8 hours, but many nights,

Speaker:

around 7. And you know what? I guess they call it

Speaker:

beauty sleep for a reason. Now back to

Speaker:

our tips, I think this is gonna be our 5th. So we're gonna

Speaker:

call it it's gonna be our secret weapon and it's

Speaker:

confidence. So if there is one thing that I've learned over

Speaker:

the years, and it's that confidence is the

Speaker:

most beautiful thing a woman can wear. It's

Speaker:

about owning who you are celebrating your journey

Speaker:

and radiating that inner sparkle that comes

Speaker:

from self acceptance and love. Now I

Speaker:

know I said 5, but wait, here's an extra one. And

Speaker:

this may be the most impactful tip of all.

Speaker:

And that's taking care of your mental and

Speaker:

emotional well-being. Your mindset plays

Speaker:

a significant role in how you age and perceive yourself.

Speaker:

Practice gratitude daily to shift your focus to the

Speaker:

positive aspects of your life. Staying

Speaker:

socially active keeps your mind sharp and your spirit

Speaker:

young. Pursue hobbies and an interest

Speaker:

that bring you joy. Challenge your brain with new

Speaker:

learning experiences. Surround yourself

Speaker:

with positivity and supportive people.

Speaker:

Start a gratitude journal and write down 3 things that you're

Speaker:

grateful for each day. Challenge

Speaker:

negative self talk and surround yourself with people who

Speaker:

lift you up. Now, as you can see,

Speaker:

the key to looking younger after 50 lies in a

Speaker:

holistic approach to skincare, nutrition,

Speaker:

fitness, and self care. By following these tips,

you can boost your confidence, which is the best accessory that you

Speaker:

that that you've experienced in
