Heather Masters

Hello and welcome to the Choosing Happy Podcast.

Heather Masters

It's really good to be here.

Heather Masters

I'm going to discuss a topic that's really popular at the moment, but I'm going to look at it from a different perspective.

Heather Masters

We're talking about AI today and its impact on our happiness, but I'm also going to delve a little bit deeper into how to use AI safely and what you should actually be aware of.

Heather Masters

I think some of the things that we, we sort of get tied up in a knot about are actually the surface level concerns of AI, when there's actually a lot deeper concerns with the use of AI.

Heather Masters

I'm not saying AI is all bad.

Heather Masters

It can really save you time and I really don't believe it's going away.

Heather Masters

It's just about understanding the bad points as well as the good points.

Heather Masters

You can get the most out of AI and see how it can impact positively your happiness and again, where it can reduce your happiness.

Heather Masters

So stay tuned for this and more in this week's Choosing Happy Podcast.

Heather Masters

Welcome back to the Choosing Happy Podcast.

Heather Masters

I'm your host Heather Masters and today we're diving into the fascinating topic of artificial intelligence and its impact on our happiness.

Heather Masters

And as we explore this subject, I'll share my insights, my personal theories, and I'll also give you some practical exercises to help you navigate the intersection of technology and and well being.

Heather Masters

So let's begin by taking a look at AI's dual nature.

Heather Masters

Artificial intelligence is often seen as a double edged sword.

Heather Masters

On one hand, it has the potential to enhance our lives significantly, while on the other hand, it poses challenges that could detract from our happiness.

Heather Masters

In fact, that could actually restrict our freedoms.

Heather Masters

So how do we harness AI for our benefit?

Heather Masters

The key points I'm going to look at are the places where we can actually increase our happiness by saving ourselves time.

Heather Masters

And also some of the AI apps that are out there to help us focus more on happiness and help us release stress.

Heather Masters

However, there are issues with AI and if we don't manage the transition wisely and if we we don't educate ourselves about AI, both the good and bad, we can see increased stress, dissatisfaction, loss of freedoms, misinformation, and so much more.

Heather Masters

So let's start with a quick exercise just to get ourselves warmed up.

Heather Masters

So if you grab a piece of paper or open a notes app for the next week, track how you spend your time daily and identify tasks that could be automated or streamlined using AI tools.

Heather Masters

And you probably depending on your knowledge of AI, you may not know which automations could really help you.

Heather Masters

So first of all, ask yourself the following questions.

Heather Masters

What tasks take up most of your time?

Heather Masters

Are there repetitive tasks amongst them that you dread?

Heather Masters

And how might AI simplify these processes?

Heather Masters

Now, AI can support our mental health.

Heather Masters

For instance, personalized AI coaches can help us develop healthier habits by providing tailored advice based on our preferences and behaviors.

Heather Masters

And if you've used some of the apps for coaching and for wellness and even for mindfulness, you can put in your personal details and get tailored programs specific to your circumstances.

Heather Masters

You can, for instance, find healthier choices, you're nudged towards better food choices or encouraging physical activity.

Heather Masters

And AI can play a crucial role in improving our overall wellbeing with these type of apps because they have the specific information, for instance, our weight, our Height, our age, etc.

Heather Masters

And they can also take readings of our vital statistics, our bmi.

Heather Masters

You can also have apps that help release stress and help with stress management because they remind you to take breaks or suggest mindfulness exercises when you're feeling overwhelmed.

Heather Masters

Even Headspace is using AI now to come up with mindfulness routines that work with your natural routine as well.

Heather Masters

So AI shouldn't be dismissed in terms of helping us create happiness.

Heather Masters

So how would we go about integrating some of those ideas into our lives?

Heather Masters

Now, if you think about one area where you struggle, whether it's stress management, whether you suffer from anxiety, whether you suffer from procrastination and you want to increase your productivity or you want to maintain healthy habits, an AI tool or app designed to assist in that area can really help.

Heather Masters

So you could have a look on some of the app stores and find one that helps you specifically in that one area.

Heather Masters

And then commit to using it for at least two weeks and observe any changes in your mood or your productivity or your health habits.

Heather Masters

As we adapt to an increasingly automated world, it's essential to maintain a positive outlook.

Heather Masters

Instead of fearing job displacement or loss of control, let's focus on how we can use AI as a partner in enhancing our lives.

Heather Masters

Now, having said all of that, there is also the danger of becoming too reliant on AI.

Heather Masters

And I've seen a report already of a young boy who couldn't ask questions.

Heather Masters

He'd lost his questioning and critical faculties because he was so used to AI giving him all of the answers and solving most of the problems because it was just there and he could use it.

Heather Masters

Other downsides of AI, other things that really we should be aware of.

Heather Masters

There are privacy and security risks.

Heather Masters

So AI applications often collect sensitive personal data, which raises concerns about privacy violations and data breaches, and also what the data is actually used for.

Heather Masters

So users might share intimate thoughts with AI companions, unaware that this information could be exploited or mishandled by third parties.

Heather Masters

And such breaches could lead to increased vulnerability, especially for individuals struggling with mental health challenges.

Heather Masters

And one of the biggest and probably least known are the algorithmic bias and misinformation.

Heather Masters

Now, this is actually stated when you use AI.

Heather Masters

Most systems will tell you that they're not perfect, that they're in beta, and that their answers might have a bias.

Heather Masters

And AI systems are definitely not immune to biases.

Heather Masters

And they're inherent in their programming and training data.

Heather Masters

And it can lead to skewed advice or harmful recommendations.

Heather Masters

For example, an AI designed to assist with an eating disorder might inadvertently promote unhealthy behaviors instead of providing support.

Heather Masters

Additionally, misinformation generated by AI could exacerbate mental health crisis rather than alleviate them.

Heather Masters

And there's also a risk that companies may design AI systems to manipulate vulnerable users into spending more time and money on their platforms.

Heather Masters

And this commodification of companionship can lead individuals to prioritize artificial interactions over meaningful human connections.

Heather Masters

And this can further isolate them from their communities.

Heather Masters

And we can see this where in the past it's been gaming, where we see our teenagers spend more time on PCs and on the Internet and on social media than before.

Heather Masters

And that's just going to increase with the advance of AI technology over reliance on AI can diminish.

Heather Masters

As I said earlier with the example, that can diminish the critical thinking, creativity, and interpersonal skills of individuals.

Heather Masters

As individuals become accustomed to having decisions made for them, are relying on AI for problem solving, their own cognitive abilities may decline.

Heather Masters

This use it or lose it phenomenon can lead to a decrease in personal autonomy and fulfillment.

Heather Masters

And that can really have a huge impact on overall happiness.

Heather Masters

If you think about how we are programmed throughout our lives, how we build our own responses, our own perceptions, through the interaction with life itself.

Heather Masters

When we create and limit that into machine interaction, we're limiting a whole ability to socialize and communicate with human beings.

Heather Masters

Human beings are often not predictable.

Heather Masters

Some are some aunts.

Heather Masters

And how we create relationships and how we express ourselves can be extremely hindered if we become reliant on technology for most of our interactions.

Heather Masters

When it comes to AI companionship, AI companions can create a false sense of connection, leading users to develop an emotional dependency on AI, forgetting that these are just programs, they're just systems programs.

Heather Masters

And while these tools may provide companionship and reduce feelings of loneliness, they lack genuine empathy and understanding.

Heather Masters

And this can result in users neglecting real life relationships because they might prefer the unconditional acceptance offered by AI.

Heather Masters

Here you've got something that's entirely going to have a conversation with you, but it's not going to argue and it's not a substitute for human interaction.

Heather Masters

And the more that AI comes into the workplace, comes into our daily lives, comes into our homes, these are really key things that we, we need to be aware of.

Heather Masters

And AI has been used as well within therapy.

Heather Masters

So many AI applications designed to assist with mental health issues don't adhere to established therapeutic frameworks.

Heather Masters

So it's something really to be aware of that users might experience temporary relief, but often find that these tools fail to provide effective interventions for deeper issues like anxiety or depression.

Heather Masters

And the other thing with being on tech all of the time, that actually if you know the blue lights, the fact that you're in foveal vision tends to increase the likelihood of anxiety and depression.

Heather Masters

And if you're using something that you think is going to help you and it's actually increasing, it can lead to frustration and a sense of abandonment when the user realizes the limitation of their AI companions.

Heather Masters

So there's a lot to actually really consider when you're using AI from a positive and a negative approach.

Heather Masters

Going beyond the day to day use of AI, understanding that the data is being captured and is being used in the Internet of things.

Heather Masters

So that AI can link to smart devices.

Heather Masters

It can ultimately the idea is it will link to chips that are implanted in our bodies that we are giving control over to machine technology and remembering.

Heather Masters

And this is the important thing that this technology, these programs are written by people who could manipulate us, manipulate vulnerable users.

Heather Masters

So it's important to really be aware of how you're using AI and aware of the downsides.

Heather Masters

And strive for a balanced approach that incorporates both using technology assistance but also having genuine connections in your aim to have a happy and balanced life.

Heather Masters

The advantages of AI in general is that they can give us more time.

Heather Masters

Especially for instance in small businesses where repetitive tasks that you may hand over previously to a VA you can automate within AI and really save hours of time using AI as well.

Heather Masters

So how would we integrate AI into daily routines that can enhance happiness and well being?

Heather Masters

Here are a variety of practical exercises that could be effective in incorporating AI into your life for improved mental health and positivity.

Heather Masters

For morning routine enhancements, you could use AI tools developed for daily gratitude journaling.

Heather Masters

These tools can remind you to reflect on what you're thankful for Foster a positive mindset throughout the day and tailor themselves to your needs based on questionnaires and an understanding of what you want to achieve.

Heather Masters

Personalized Meditation Again I mentioned apps like Headspace and Calm that use AI to tailor meditation sessions based on your preferences on your progress on the meditations that you use, therefore helping you achieve mindfulness and inner peace.

Heather Masters

Now daily task management is one of the most popular uses for AI, so using voice assistants like Siri or Alexa for quick tasks such as setting reminders, managing to do lists are controlling smart home devices and this can reduce stress and free up time for you to do the more time consuming and thought requiring activities.

Heather Masters

And again just that warning that they can control smart devices and just be aware that if they can control them then so can the central control of AI.

Heather Masters

Smart Scheduling AI driven apps like Todoist or Trello can help organize tasks and set priorities making time management more efficient and they can also provide reminders for deadlines and suggest optimal times to complete tasks for your health and well being.

Heather Masters

Fitness Coaching There are AI powered fitness platforms created for personalized workout plans based on your goals and your your progress and this adaptive fitness coaching keeps you motivated and helps maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Heather Masters

There's also nutritional guidance which can AI can analyze your dietary habits and provide meal plans tailored to your health goals, making it easier to eat well.

Heather Masters

And again, there are so many variations on perspectives on diet and what healthy eating actually is these days.

Heather Masters

So you know, find one that matches with your views.

Heather Masters

Emotional well Being We've already mentioned mindfulness practices such as headspace and meditation routines that monitor your progress and suggest practices that suit your emotional state.

Heather Masters

As I say, Headspace does this already and it can enhance your ability to manage stress and anxiety and you can plan your emotional responses ahead of time by receiving prompts that stimulate creativity so you can better navigate daily challenges and improve your overall emotional health.

Heather Masters

Evening Wind Downs Digital Detox reminders so you can set up a reminder to encourage you to switch off your apps at least an hour before bed.

Heather Masters

So that's promoting better sleep for yourself.

Heather Masters

You can also have AI suggest evening reflection practices such as journaling about your day or noting three things you're grateful for which can enhance feelings of contentment before sleep.

Heather Masters

And more than that, it's kind of setting your unconscious mind up to focus on the positive as you do sleep as well.

Heather Masters

So by integrating a variety of AI driven practices into your daily routine you can cultivate a more positive mindset and improve emotional well being and that can enhance overall happiness.

Heather Masters

But as I said, it's.

Heather Masters

It's a big balance between what is positive and what can be negative as well.

Heather Masters

By really being aware of AI and how it works, the advantages and disadvantages, for instance, creativity, if you use it to generate courses or art or writing, absolutely recognizing that it's pulling information from other creators and that as you build and enter information, if you have the learning on, and I personally think even if you don't, it's going to be using your information for its learning and it's going to be reusing it in the answers it gives to others.

Heather Masters

So, for instance, if someone writes about podcasts like this, like the Choosing Happy Podcast, and they want some tips on happiness, there is absolutely nothing to stop AI trawling my website and pulling out all of the tips on my podcast and creating another piece of content based on that.

Heather Masters

And to be honest, at this point, it's something that is pretty unavoidable.

Heather Masters

Maybe it'll be more avoidable in the future, but it's just being aware that AI is very unlikely to go away.

Heather Masters

Be aware of the good points, be aware of the potential negatives, and really choose how you use it.

Heather Masters

You know, use it mindfully, use it in a way that benefits you, and use it in a way that helps you progress, while at the same time you're absolutely aware of how AI works and how it uses data, etc.

Heather Masters

So thank you for joining me today on this exploration of AI and happiness.
