Foreign.
Speaker BHello.
Speaker BWelcome back to another episode of Getting Real with Bossy, the podcast that shows you what it's really like to be a business owner.
Speaker BWe are your hosts, Kelly Bush and Kelly Metras.
Speaker BAnd here we are at the library.
Speaker AOur new favorite spot.
Speaker BIt is so nice to.
Speaker BIt's so nice to be at the library.
Speaker BWe do some co working here every once in a while, but it's nice to get together and be in person.
Speaker ABecause we never record in person.
Speaker AThis is like our second time since we went virtual.
Speaker BThat's wonderful.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BHi.
Speaker BHi.
Speaker BLove you.
Speaker ASo we're ending December.
Speaker AWell, I mean, we'll have one more episode go out, but we're ending the year with us.
Speaker AThis is our last 2025 Kelly and Kelly episode.
Speaker BIt's been a year.
Speaker AIt's always been a year.
Speaker BIt's always been a year.
Speaker BYeah, a lot's happened this year.
Speaker BYeah, a lot of great things.
Speaker AA lot of great things.
Speaker BI think we accomplished a lot this year.
Speaker BWe talked a lot.
Speaker BI think we taught a lot.
Speaker BI think we shared a lot.
Speaker BWe talked about money.
Speaker BI hope you guys learned a lot from us this year.
Speaker BI think we discovered a lot of things that we can do better and learn how to run our businesses better and be a lot more open about things that we don't know and not be so scared about talking about money and our feelings about money and how we were raised to learn about money.
Speaker BYeah, I think I feel a lot more comfortable with my relationship about money and investigating new things and how to run my business when it comes to the financials.
Speaker AYeah, money's terrifying.
Speaker AYeah, that's all I got.
Speaker AMoney's terrifying.
Speaker BMoney's terrifying.
Speaker AIt's still terrifying, even after all the talk we did.
Speaker ABut it's important and you need to know your.
Speaker AYou need to know your.
Speaker ASo absolutely, it can still be terrifying and you can still know your and just keep moving forward.
Speaker AI'm apologize ahead of time.
Speaker AI'm in, like four hours of sleep because I thought I was going to have to work today instead of going to the wake I was supposed to be going to.
Speaker ASo more beautiful things about small business ownership that people don't talk about is when you know, your life happens and you're trying to figure it out.
Speaker ABut last minute, I got somebody this morning to cover, even though I already covered myself, and then I had to cover other people and, you know, the navigating of all the things.
Speaker BBut that's how it goes.
Speaker BI don't think people always understand that when they say just Shut it off.
Speaker BYou're leaving.
Speaker BOh, you get to leave.
Speaker BOh, you're going home early tonight.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker BI am absolutely walking out of the doors of my business right now at this time and never working on it again.
Speaker B8:30 at night.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker AI'm not going to think about it.
Speaker AI'm not going to work on it.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BI don't, I don't think people always understand that that's not the end of our workday ever.
Speaker BEver.
Speaker BIt continues and it's always on our mind and it's always present and we always have to be there for it on some level and it never shuts down.
Speaker ASo you know what I want to pivot to?
Speaker AIt's because I've, I've apologized.
Speaker ASo if I ramble or it don't make sense, I've already apologized.
Speaker ASo I want to pivot to some of the things I learned during 2025.
Speaker AWe haven't pre planned this.
Speaker BNot at all, not one bit.
Speaker AI have always been an advocate for paying attention to politics because it always led to me understanding my business better, understanding trends better, being aware of things that were coming down the pipeline.
Speaker ASo when they hit my business, I wasn't surprised.
Speaker AYeah, I've been a huge advocate as of.
Speaker AHave you.
Speaker AAnd this year specifically.
Speaker AWas full.
Speaker AOf political possible changes that either went into effect or didn't go into effect or went into effect and then came out of effect.
Speaker AAnd it was such a whirlwind spiral of exhaustion just trying to figure out what I needed to pay attention to.
Speaker BThere was a lot of political pivoting.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd even things like the war in Ukraine.
Speaker ALike, I learned a lot about the supplies that Ukraine does for like the, the minerals and the, the raw materials that Ukraine, you know, supplies for the rest of the world and how that affects it and the shipping, cargo and they learned a lot.
Speaker ABut in that same thing, I was exhausted.
Speaker AI still, I still am.
Speaker AI'm like, I don't know, did the tariffs happen?
Speaker BThe tariffs are definitely happening.
Speaker AI, I don't know.
Speaker ALike, I know prices are up on everything, but it could be just random, like, who knows?
Speaker ALike, I can't keep up.
Speaker BIt's, it's very hard.
Speaker BAnd I think there's so many different, different news outlets and it's, it's hard to know, especially with social media, who to follow, what to follow, what is accurate.
Speaker BAnd there's such a divide politically.
Speaker BHow, how are you guys getting your news?
Speaker BHow are you finding out what is accurate, what is true?
Speaker BBecause it, it is very difficult.
Speaker BI Don't.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BIt's very hard.
Speaker AIt used to be that when organizations that I'm a part of would send emails about things, I knew about it already and I'm like, oh, yeah, I knew about that.
Speaker AAnd now I'm to the point where I'm like, oh, cool.
Speaker ASo that's real.
Speaker ALike, oh, okay, that, that one's real.
Speaker ALike, because it's just.
Speaker AIt used to be that if you heard something was coming down the pipeline, like it actually did, where now it's like, you never know.
Speaker AThings get backtracked, things get switched, things get altered.
Speaker AThe government's pivoting in ways I didn't know it was possible to do, and it's.
Speaker AYeah, it's just exhausting.
Speaker AAnd I just wanted to ramble on that for a minute because I think that's part of my exhaustion this year is just trying to keep up on what I need to know to run my business in the future.
Speaker ABecause we're, we don't work for today, we work for next year.
Speaker BWell, I think that's a good, a good plug for things like NYSRA and if your industry has a trade organization.
Speaker BBecause nysra, the New York State Restaurant association, has always been really good about putting out, out information.
Speaker BAnd that's one thing that I can trust because they are working for our industry and I can trust that at least that information is accurate.
Speaker BSo if you do, if you're in an industry that has a trade organization join that, that is money well spent.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BAnd you're going to be getting that, that good information, that good, accurate political information that is affecting your business, local, there's, statewide, there's.
Speaker ASo find the one that you trust and definitely use their services to keep up on what is going on.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BBecause I don't think it's going to be a whole lot different next.
Speaker ANo, I mean, we're, we're in a certain political climate that's going to last.
Speaker BFor at least a couple of years.
Speaker ASo you have to figure out how to navigate it.
Speaker AAnd this year I figured I have to turn everything off and just wait for the information to come to me, which is not how I like to be.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker ABut I can't, I can't keep up.
Speaker AYou can't worry about things that don't end up happening.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BAnd I think a lot of that has affected consumer spending.
Speaker BI think.
Speaker BGovernment shutdown and people's faith in the economy and their own spending.
Speaker BAnd I know that you and I talk about it a lot, how we're spending our money is incredibly different than in years past.
Speaker BHas definitely affected our industries and other.
Speaker BOther industry retailers.
Speaker BUm, so I think going into next year, like, what are we going to do?
Speaker BAnd we've talked about it, like, we need like a full on, like good old witchy.
Speaker AWoo.
Speaker AWoo.
Speaker BOh, yeah.
Speaker BPurging.
Speaker AWe are going to go into it in January.
Speaker AMaybe we'll bring the podcast along.
Speaker BYeah, I think.
Speaker BI think.
Speaker AListen to the burning.
Speaker BI think we're going to do a live podcast in January at our January bossy event.
Speaker BBecause I feel like.
Speaker BAnd I said it when Kelly walked in this room.
Speaker BIt's legit.
Speaker BA lot has gone on emotionally, physically, for me, business wise, in our industry, in this area, in Rochester.
Speaker BPolitically, I feel like I'm living in a pity party.
Speaker BAnd I think it's a legit pity party because I got a lot going on, but I don't want to live in it anymore and I got to release it.
Speaker BSo for me, 2026 is going to.
Speaker BAnd I want to make grand statements because, man, I made one about 2025 in 2020.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd I think I burned.
Speaker BI burned my bridge.
Speaker BSo I don't want to make grand statements.
Speaker AI was so mad at that in 2020.
Speaker AI was like, I cannot wait that long.
Speaker AWe didn't even know what was going on.
Speaker BI know I said, this is going to be a five year thing.
Speaker BAnd I.
Speaker AIt was a five year thing.
Speaker ABut we had no idea how much was going to change that when we came out of the five years, the world would be a complete, completely different place.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BBut I mean, you.
Speaker AYou were right.
Speaker AYou just didn't realize.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AIt's like, you know when you make your wish to the genie.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd the genie always finds a way to trick you.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AThe world tricked you.
Speaker BWishes come true, not free.
Speaker BWishes come true.
Speaker BYou're true, not free.
Speaker ATough.
Speaker BI want it.
Speaker BStephen Sondheim.
Speaker AOkay, I didn't make that.
Speaker ADid you just quote Broadway?
Speaker BI did quote Broadway.
Speaker AVery, very impressed that I knew that he was Broadway because.
Speaker ACause I'm still, like, learning.
Speaker BYou did good.
Speaker BYour children would be very.
Speaker AKaylin, if you're listening.
Speaker BI know.
Speaker BI'm gonna.
Speaker BI'm gonna send her a text soon.
Speaker BThis is done.
Speaker BBut I think next year is going to be the year we just have to let some of this go.
Speaker BAnd.
Speaker BLike you said, there is the.
Speaker BThere's going to be more of that political pivoting where there's going to be grand gestures and big statements that get pulled back real quickly.
Speaker AAnd, and other ones that don't.
Speaker BSo forward.
Speaker BFocus on, on your businesses, focus on yourselves, focus on your families, what you can control.
Speaker BAnd I think this is going to be the year to get back to that.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd do what you got to do and put your, put your head down and, and go forward and focus on your community.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BSupporting.
Speaker BI feel like it's like, like, like that 2022, like when we were like, all coming out of it a little bit and we were just really all community focused.
Speaker BAnd that's, that's where I want to get to.
Speaker AWe do need to be community focused.
Speaker AAnd I think, I think I started that, but I didn't have words to put it in place.
Speaker AI think that's where my exhaustion led to, was like, I can't keep up.
Speaker ASo I just have to focus on xyz.
Speaker ALike, yeah, just put my head down.
Speaker APeople ask me what I'm doing and I'm like, moving forward.
Speaker AYep.
Speaker AThat's all I could do is move forward.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker ALike, I have to get through this week, get through next week, and then see what happens next year if I just keep moving forward.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd we always say, like, you know, in our business, we have to be looking towards tomorrow and next year.
Speaker BAnd I feel like maybe we just have to tunnel that down a little bit and just, let's just, let's, let's just work on next week and stop putting so much pressure on us, on ourselves, and just focus on little, little goals and, you know, always have those big goals in the.
Speaker BThose big goals for the future.
Speaker BBut I think next year is going to be tricky.
Speaker BDon't think it's going to get any easier.
Speaker BSo let's make some small goals and just be really, really, really filled with gratitude when we make those.
Speaker BI think that's going to make big difference.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AI think we should, we should leave this episode and pick, look at your business and a giant picture and pick three things that you want to set a goal for in the next quarter.
Speaker AAnd maybe you do one thing each month.
Speaker AYou know, I want to increase my catering.
Speaker AIt's always.
Speaker AI probably talked about it a thousand times on here.
Speaker AObviously, I want to increase my catering.
Speaker AHow am I going to do that?
Speaker BRight.
Speaker AAm I tracking it?
Speaker AAnd I think that's something also.
Speaker AWe are so focused on the big picture that we're not paying attention to the little things we're doing and the little successes that we're having.
Speaker ASo we don't notice when a campaign is getting results and we don't notice that people are coming in because of something we said or did or an activity, you know?
Speaker ASo I think that gratitude and that streamlining and that focus on a smaller level.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AWill be good for our mental state.
Speaker BI think so.
Speaker AI don't know about y' all out there, but I think I need it.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BGive us your thoughts.
Speaker BWe're happy to hear them.
Speaker AOh, that's a good one.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThat's where I'm at.
Speaker BThat's what I got.
Speaker AThat's all you got.
Speaker AHow many minutes are we in?
Speaker AWe're done.
Speaker A12 minutes.
Speaker AIt's the shortest episode we've ever done.
Speaker BWell, that's what we've got.
Speaker AFinished.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker AI don't know what else we got.
Speaker BI think.
Speaker BI think that's good.
Speaker AWe are legit.
Speaker AGoing into 2026.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AOh, let's talk more about what we're going to do in January so people have ideas in case they can't join us.
Speaker AWe are going to write things down and burn them.
Speaker BYeah, I'm still.
Speaker BOr break them.
Speaker ABreak them.
Speaker BWe're not sure.
Speaker BIt depends on what location that we're in.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BWe have a couple different.
Speaker BCouple different.
Speaker BA couple different options.
Speaker BWe're going to break or burn.
Speaker AOne of the options.
Speaker ASo I was going to say I'm still jealous that I missed Erica's sound bath.
Speaker ASo Erica, our biggest cheerleader.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker ABought her building a building this year.
Speaker AShe's been trying forever to find the perfect place.
Speaker AIt is the perfect place.
Speaker BGorgeous.
Speaker AI'm sorry.
Speaker ASo excited.
Speaker AI can't even.
Speaker ABecause of all the places she looked at.
Speaker AI was talking to a mutual friend of ours, and I said, it's like when your friend is dating.
Speaker AI'm like, oh, I met this new guy.
Speaker AI want you to meet him.
Speaker AAnd you're like, oh, he's nice.
Speaker AYou're like, I think you could do better.
Speaker ALike, oh, he's nice.
Speaker ALike, I really hope this works out for you, but in the back of your head, you're like, is this the right guy?
Speaker ASo I felt about the buildings.
Speaker AI was like, oh, I really want this to work for her because she's so excited.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker ABut is that the best place?
Speaker AThat seems like a lot.
Speaker BOr.
Speaker AOh, I don't.
Speaker AAnd she found this place.
Speaker AI was like, oh, my God, it's perfect.
Speaker AIt is everything she wanted.
Speaker ASo put that out there.
Speaker AYou can.
Speaker AYou can manifest.
Speaker BShe manifested the.
Speaker AOut of it.
Speaker AOut of that.
Speaker BHoly crap.
Speaker AAnd found the most ideal perfect location and had a sound bath.
Speaker AWhen she first got in to circle back to why I brought it up and I couldn't make it.
Speaker AYou got to go.
Speaker BIt was wonderful.
Speaker AI was so jealous.
Speaker ASo maybe we need to incorporate a sound bath into our January transition.
Speaker BI think so too.
Speaker ADefinitely need a sound bath.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BWe're gonna make some intentions.
Speaker BWe'll put some intentions out there.
Speaker BWe're gonna manifest.
Speaker BAnd like I said, making those small goals make them attainable.
Speaker BI think we are.
Speaker BWe've put a lot of pressure on ourselves this year in an incredibly difficult, traumatic and tricky, tricky year.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd I think that was really unkind of us to do to ourselves.
Speaker AYes, we need to be nicer.
Speaker BYeah, we need to be nicer.
Speaker AThat's what I love about manifesting.
Speaker AAnd like you, you know, some people are like, oh, it's all woohoo.
Speaker AVision boards.
Speaker AManifesting, making intentions, burning things, breaking things, building things.
Speaker AIt brings your, your focus to the forefront.
Speaker AIt's energy and it reminds you of the things that you truly want.
Speaker AWhen you're living in this spiral of life that's just makes everything go by so fast.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker ASo it is, it is not woohoo.
Speaker AIt is actual focusing yourself on what you truly want.
Speaker BThere is science behind it.
Speaker BYou're putting that energy forward and if you're reminding yourself of that every day, that's what you're putting forward.
Speaker BAnd living with that intention, you're going.
Speaker ATo make that up on your mirror, on the dashboard of your car.
Speaker BOh, we're gonna do crafts this year, aren't we?
Speaker BWe are gonna be crafty.
Speaker ALet's be crafty.
Speaker BSo crafty.
Speaker BI have some craft kits on the website.
Speaker AI powerful on my bathroom mirror for my girls and I don't think any of them pay any attention to it.
Speaker BOr they're just so.
Speaker BIt's just part of their daily life.
Speaker BIt's just ingrained in them.
Speaker BThey, they don't have to pay attention, it's just part of them.
Speaker AI wanted to remind them every day of how powerful they were.
Speaker ASo I literally put it on the bathroom mirror.
Speaker AI love that it's slightly crooked.
Speaker BThere's probably too faced on it.
Speaker ASo the OCD part of me wants to redo it.
Speaker ABut.
Speaker AToothpaste yet?
Speaker BSure.
Speaker AIf anybody follows my personal social media, my kids are really good at putting toothpaste in random spots.
Speaker ANo toothpaste there.
Speaker AMaybe they are actually embracing the power I'm putting out there.
Speaker BThey're manifesting.
Speaker AAnd we also need to remind ourselves of eight year old us.
Speaker AWe were talking before we started recording about how my youngest is doing the Nutcracker.
Speaker ASo I've had her alone, driving back and forth and sitting and waiting, and I was reminded of how amazing it is to be eight.
Speaker AAnd she's constantly looking at the world with these hopeful, beautifully kind eyes, and everything's going to be okay.
Speaker ADo you know what failure is?
Speaker AFailure is a chance to learn and grow.
Speaker BOh, God.
Speaker BOh, my God.
Speaker AShe drops this shit and you're like, what?
Speaker AYou look stressed, mama.
Speaker ADo you need a hug or do you need some space?
Speaker AOh, my God.
Speaker AWhat?
Speaker AWho?
Speaker AWhere did you.
Speaker AOnce.
Speaker AYes, please.
Speaker ABoth.
Speaker ACan I have both?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BShe's incredible.
Speaker ASo maybe I should start writing down the eight year old quotes and sharing them with the world so we're all reminded of how beautiful and hopeful and uplifting the world can be when we're not dragged down by the stressors of the outside life.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker BSo we all need to remind ourselves during our day, we need to run our business like an eight year old.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWith the mindset of an eight year old, not the business acumen.
Speaker BI mean, maybe.
Speaker BGood point.
Speaker AWho knows?
Speaker AHave we tried it?
Speaker BWe haven't hit a goal.
Speaker BI'm gonna give her my book.
Speaker BSending her my PIANL right now.
Speaker AShe'd be like, well, I learned multiplication this year, so.
Speaker AAll you have to do is add the.
Speaker BProbably do better than me at this point.
Speaker BThe way my brain's working right now.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BYou'll probably find many mistakes.
Speaker AOh, my God, yes.
Speaker ASo I'm gonna encapsulate a little Imani this year and share it with the world so y' all get to reap some of the benefits that I get.
Speaker AIt's one of the beautiful parts of having kids late in life.
Speaker AI wish I had had them younger, but damn, I'm happy I have them around now because if I didn't, I'd have a bunch of teenagers and 20 somethings and I'd be all alone in this mess.
Speaker BIt's true.
Speaker BBut now I got her.
Speaker AI know she's gonna be okay.
Speaker AIt's wonderful.
Speaker AMy little therapist.
Speaker BThat's perfect.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker ARun your business like an 8 year old.
Speaker AManifest.
Speaker AManifest.
Speaker BManifest small attainable goals and celebrate with the most gratitude.
Speaker BLike a puppy party.
Speaker BYou know when you get a puppy and you're like, when they go potty outside, you.
Speaker BYou throw that puppy party.
Speaker BYou know?
Speaker BThrow yourself a puppy party every time you make that goal, every time you.
Speaker AGo to the bathroom outside.
Speaker BMm.
Speaker BI love you.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker APuppy parties on the puppy parties.
Speaker AAll right, so we're gonna go into 2026.
Speaker AWe're gonna share with you in January how our either, you know, share it live, if we can figure out how, or share with you what we did and how it went.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ATo.
Speaker ATo.
Speaker AAnd it may not in 2025 could have been perfect for you.
Speaker AIt could have been amazing.
Speaker BAnd that's great.
Speaker ABut you still have to start somewhere in 2026, so.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker AYou know, your.
Speaker AYour burning and breaking can be personal.
Speaker AIt can be habits.
Speaker AYou know, maybe you're doing amazing, but you've got yourself in some.
Speaker ASome nasty habits of not having boundaries, working too much, having your phone on all the time.
Speaker BWell.
Speaker BAnd sometimes when things go great, you get into a level of complacency.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker BI need to break that.
Speaker AYep.
Speaker AThings could be better.
Speaker ABut you're.
Speaker AYou're happy, you're doing well, so.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASo I think regardless of where you are in your 2025, our plan for January is beneficial.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd as we learned this summer, sometimes when things are going great, that's the time to look at selling.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOr looking what your exit plan might be.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AShe was amazing.
Speaker AAnd also.
Speaker AAnd if you're like us and your January is going to be slow and you miss any episodes, you should rewind back.
Speaker BIt's great.
Speaker AAnd listen, because they were amazing.
Speaker AWe had some amazing guests on this year.
Speaker AWe have some amazing guests lined up for next year.
Speaker BYep.
Speaker AI'm not going to give any spoilers, but I'm already excited.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ASo 2026 is going to be peaceful.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AIt's going to be calm, it's going to be focused, all of those things.
Speaker AAnd it is going to be a puppy party.
Speaker BPuppy parties all the time.
Speaker AAll the time.
Speaker BI love it.
Speaker BGreat.
Speaker AAll right, well, be bold, be brave, and be the boss.
Speaker AShare this episode with someone you think needs to hear it.
Speaker AProbably should have said.
