Why would you attend an event run by the chartered Institute
Jon Clayton:of architectural technologist or CIAT?
Jon Clayton:If you weren't an architectural technologist.
Jon Clayton:And even if you were an architectural technologist,
Jon Clayton:why would you bother attending?
Jon Clayton:AT awards event.
Jon Clayton:If you were not nominated for an award.
Jon Clayton:You might be surprised to hear.
Jon Clayton:There are plenty of reasons to attend in-person events.
Jon Clayton:Even if they're not run by your own professional body.
Jon Clayton:And also to attend award events when you're not opt for untoward.
Jon Clayton:And that's exactly what we're going to cover in this episode of architecture

Jon Clayton:Now let's talk about the AT awards.
Jon Clayton:Hey, everyone.
Jon Clayton:Thanks so much for tuning in today.
Jon Clayton:Today.
Jon Clayton:I wanted to talk about C I a.
Jon Clayton:forthcoming AT awards event.
Jon Clayton:So that you can understand who the event is for and why you might consider going.
Jon Clayton:Even if you're not a nominee for an award.
Jon Clayton:Or even if you're not an architectural technologist.
Jon Clayton:So what is the AT award?
Jon Clayton:So the AT awards showcases the technology of architecture at its best.
Jon Clayton:It's going to be held at Christ church spittle fields in east London in
Jon Clayton:the UK on the 25th of October, 2024.
Jon Clayton:The event happens around this time of year.
Jon Clayton:Every October in London, in the UK.
Jon Clayton:But this, this year's event is coming round fairly soon at the time when
Jon Clayton:this episode is being published.
Jon Clayton:The event recognizes the exceptional contribution, the architectural
Jon Clayton:technology practices and professionals make to the built environment as
Jon Clayton:well as outstanding achievements from students studying the discipline.
Jon Clayton:And at the event itself, the winners will be announced and
Jon Clayton:presented with much excitement.
Jon Clayton:I think whenever you have an event like this, there's often some common myths
Jon Clayton:or misconceptions about the event.
Jon Clayton:Things like.
Jon Clayton:It's just for the award nominees.
Jon Clayton:Or this particular event is just for architectural technologists.
Jon Clayton:That it's going to be a stuffy formal occasion.
Jon Clayton:That the speeches are going to be really long and boring.
Jon Clayton:And.
Jon Clayton:Unless your nominee is just not worth paying the ticket price to attend.
Jon Clayton:So I wanted to share with you my experience of last year's event.
Jon Clayton:I did attend the AT awards.
Jon Clayton:In London in 2023.
Jon Clayton:And I didn't know what to expect.
Jon Clayton:I'd not been to the AT awards before.
Jon Clayton:Uh, I hadn't, I don't think I'd actually been to any awards event before, so
Jon Clayton:I really didn't know what to expect.
Jon Clayton:And what I found was that.
Jon Clayton:First say it was at a fantastic venue.
Jon Clayton:I believe the venue has changed this year, but I'm sure that it's going
Jon Clayton:to be equally just as good as last year, but it was a really great venue.
Jon Clayton:It was a friendly atmosphere.
Jon Clayton:It didn't feel too formal.
Jon Clayton:There was a dress code.
Jon Clayton:Like you, you know, they didn't want you to turn up in your, your
Jon Clayton:shorts or your ripped jeans and, you know, your muscle Vestal, whatever
Jon Clayton:you like to wear on the weekends.
Jon Clayton:So it was kind of a.
Jon Clayton:Smart formal dress code, you know, sort of smart trousers and a
Jon Clayton:college shirt, that sort of thing.
Jon Clayton:But it wasn't, it wasn't a stuffy formal event.
Jon Clayton:It was really friendly.
Jon Clayton:There was great atmosphere.
Jon Clayton:I recall there was a free bar for at least part of the time.
Jon Clayton:We went out to go and buy a drink and it's no, it's free bar.
Jon Clayton:Just help yourself.
Jon Clayton:Though there was food, there was nipples that was going around this.
Jon Clayton:Little things like that.
Jon Clayton:It's important.
Jon Clayton:Isn't it.
Jon Clayton:If you're going to an event like this, you have all those thoughts thinking like,
Jon Clayton:oh, do I, do I need to go out and eat?
Jon Clayton:Or do I need to factor in.
Jon Clayton:You know the expenses for, for that, like there was nipples there as well.
Jon Clayton:There was an after party.
Jon Clayton:There was an after party, which I believe was sponsored by, um,
Jon Clayton:building material manufacturer.
Jon Clayton:But.
Jon Clayton:Everyone was invited.
Jon Clayton:So after the ceremony finished, people could go to, um, Um, nearby venue and
Jon Clayton:the conversations carried on that.
Jon Clayton:I got quite a lot out of it.
Jon Clayton:I would say that I, I was pleasantly surprised by what I got out of it.
Jon Clayton:I mean, I think firstly.
Jon Clayton:It gave me an excuse to get away from my desk and have a doubt in London.
Jon Clayton:And as somebody that mainly works from home, just having a reason to
Jon Clayton:get out and go somewhere different.
Jon Clayton:Which was fantastic in itself.
Jon Clayton:I got to hear about.
Jon Clayton:Amazing projects that architecture technologists are working on.
Jon Clayton:I did get the opportunity to meet some existing friends that
Jon Clayton:I have in the industry that were attending the event as well.
Jon Clayton:So the team at studio 11 architecture were there.
Jon Clayton:So it was great to catch up with Chris and the rest of the team.
Jon Clayton:And I also met some online connections in-person so these were people that
Jon Clayton:I'd been connected with online either recently or, or been connected for a
Jon Clayton:little while and never actually had chance to meet them in real life.
Jon Clayton:Remember.
Jon Clayton:Don't forget to download the architecture business, blueprint the
Jon Clayton:step by step formula to freedom for architects, architecture, technologists,
Jon Clayton:and architecture designers.
Jon Clayton:You can grab the blueprint without any charge@architecturebusinessclub.com
Jon Clayton:forward slash blueprint.
Jon Clayton:And if you enjoy this episode, then please leave a five star review or
Jon Clayton:rating wherever you listen to podcasts.
Jon Clayton:Now, back to the show.
Jon Clayton:So I met people like.
Jon Clayton:And Vanna.
Jon Clayton:And, Ryan Godfrey which was really cool.
Jon Clayton:And I got this chance to meet some of the staff from C I.
Jon Clayton:So I, I am a member of the Institute.
Jon Clayton:And occasionally you'll get emails from team members.
Jon Clayton:Um, or you might need to phone them up to talk to them about something or the two.
Jon Clayton:It's really nice to get, to meet a couple of people from CIT as well.
Jon Clayton:People like Adam and the coats and Donald Chappelle.
Jon Clayton:So it was nice to meet those people.
Jon Clayton:I, I also made.
Jon Clayton:Valuable new connections that I, I just didn't expect that led to
Jon Clayton:some really great opportunities.
Jon Clayton:And I think this is the magic of attending in-person events.
Jon Clayton:You really get to connect with people.
Jon Clayton:In a different way than you do online in the DMS, or even over zoom, you just can't
Jon Clayton:beat the, the connection that you get with people when you meet them in person.
Jon Clayton:I met, Dan rigger Monte, the current editor, art designing
Jon Clayton:buildings, construction, Wiki.
Jon Clayton:And that led to being invited to be a guest editor on that website.
Jon Clayton:How amazing was that?
Jon Clayton:That was something.
Jon Clayton:Really unexpected.
Jon Clayton:And then that then led to being introduced to Stephen Drew, the
Jon Clayton:founder of architecture, social, who was also there the AT awards as well.
Jon Clayton:And he invited me to be a guest on his live stream podcast.
Jon Clayton:Now.
Jon Clayton:At that point I'd.
Jon Clayton:Never.
Jon Clayton:Been on the live stream before I'd never been on a podcast before.
Jon Clayton:It was actually a little bit before this particular podcast was launched.
Jon Clayton:So that was a really exciting opportunity that wouldn't have come around.
Jon Clayton:Had I not gone to that event?
Jon Clayton:Do the thing that it did for me was that.
Jon Clayton:it was around the time, a little bit before launching this very show.
Jon Clayton:Gave me an opportunity to, to share that news with a few
Jon Clayton:people before the launch date.
Jon Clayton:To build a little bit of excitement about that new thing, but I was,
Jon Clayton:I'm putting out into the world.
Jon Clayton:So that was really great for me too.
Jon Clayton:Um, Particularly excited about this year's event, though.
Jon Clayton:And, um, without being too self-indulgent.
Jon Clayton:I just wanted to share that if you didn't know already that I actually
Jon Clayton:am one of the nominees this year.
Jon Clayton:I've actually been nominated, as a finalist in the chartered architectural
Jon Clayton:technologist of the year category.
Jon Clayton:Which, I'm hugely honored about and I have to Fang thank, fellow
Jon Clayton:architectural technologist, Travis Smith for the nomination.
Jon Clayton:So thank you very much, Trevor, for that.
Jon Clayton:It's much appreciated.
Jon Clayton:But the basis for the nomination is for the work that I've been doing.
Jon Clayton:On this very podcast.
Jon Clayton:So I'm hugely proud of that in itself and whether or not I win or not.
Jon Clayton:Doesn't really matter.
Jon Clayton:Just going to raise the level of excitement on the day for me.
Jon Clayton:So I'm thoroughly, thoroughly looking forward to it.
Jon Clayton:And I wish all the other nominees, the best of luck.
Jon Clayton:So.
Jon Clayton:If you sitting on the fence about going to an event like the ATA awards
Jon Clayton:then, or the ATA awards itself.
Jon Clayton:And you haven't been to something like this before.
Jon Clayton:Uh, maybe, maybe it feels a little bit outside of your comfort zone and you
Jon Clayton:sort of wondering, well, If I'm not a nominee, like why would I bother,
Jon Clayton:like, I was not a nominee last year.
Jon Clayton:And it was.
Jon Clayton:It was outside of my comfort zone a year ago.
Jon Clayton:But I went anyway.
Jon Clayton:And I was so glad that I dates.
Jon Clayton:I got, a great opportunity to meet.
Jon Clayton:Like-minded people that are all the same industry that I've been
Jon Clayton:working in for many, many years.
Jon Clayton:And it was a real pleasure to just spend some time with them.
Jon Clayton:And it was just a really fun social event.
Jon Clayton:Friendly.
Jon Clayton:It wasn't, it wasn't too formal.
Jon Clayton:It was really relaxed.
Jon Clayton:It wasn't stuffy and it was just a heck of a lot of fun.
Jon Clayton:I've been even at a, a great band in the background as well.
Jon Clayton:The awards part, the speeches and things.
Jon Clayton:It didn't go on for hours.
Jon Clayton:It wasn't like, oh, you know, oh, here comes the boring bit.
Jon Clayton:We're going to have to set a weight now for ages.
Jon Clayton:It wasn't like that at all.
Jon Clayton:So it was a really good event.
Jon Clayton:And I would say if you are sitting on the fence about coming to the ATO
Jon Clayton:awards, Or any of the similar event, but your professional organization or,
Jon Clayton:Another professional body within the architecture industry, this being run.
Jon Clayton:I just get yourself a ticket and get yourself there.
Jon Clayton:Like you really got nothing to lose.
Jon Clayton:If you do want to go to the AT awards in particular though this year
Jon Clayton:you are going to have to hurry up.
Jon Clayton:If you don't already have your ticket, I believe the tickets are.
Jon Clayton:Available for a round about a week.
Jon Clayton:I think maybe you've got sort of seven days to grab your ticket from the day
Jon Clayton:that this episode has been published.
Jon Clayton:So you really do need to get your skates on.
Jon Clayton:I'll put a link in the show notes.
Jon Clayton:If you are minded to go and grab yourself a ticket.
Jon Clayton:And if you do, then I look forward to meeting you there in person.
Jon Clayton:Okay until next week.
