Stanley HillFrom local theater to live music, art exhibits to cinema and beyond, the desert scene is presented by El Portal Mexican restaurant in Cathedral City.
Stanley HillNow here is your host, Bonnie G.
HostAnd welcome to the desert scene.
HostSo happy to have you.
HostVery happy to welcome Stanley Hill, who is the artistic director of Modern Men Coachella Valley Men's Chorus.
HostAnd they have a couple of holiday things coming up.
HostHi, Stanley.
HostHow are you?
Stanley HillBonnie, thank you so much for having me on your program.
Stanley HillI'm excited.
HostExcellent.
Stanley HillI don't know how you keep up with all that's going on in the valley.
HostWell, I try to.
HostI got a lot of contacts here and there that keep me informed.
HostBut.
HostSo this is exciting.
HostSo you've got a big holiday concert coming up home for the holidays both September 14th and 15th, but I guess there's a special, special kind of preview thing on the 8th.
HostTell us about that.
Stanley HillWell, as you know, we're blessed here in the valley to have two enormous men's choruses.
Stanley HillWe have the Palm Springs Gay Men's Chorus and we have Modern Men, the Coachella Valley Men's Chorus.
Stanley HillWell, for the first time in history, we are combining the two choruses at St.
Stanley HillMargaret's on Sunday, December 8th at 3:00 at St.
Stanley HillMargaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert.
Stanley HillAnd we're going to end with Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells with both choruses singing at the same time.
Stanley HillIsn't that going to be exciting?
HostOh, that's great.
HostThat sounds like a lot of fun.
HostIs that hard to coordinate all that and logistics and get everybody together and dates together and rehearsals together?
Stanley HillHave you ever tried herding cats?
HostNo, no, no.
Stanley HillThey're very good, easy to work with.
Stanley HillThe guys are really committed.
Stanley HillBoth choruses.
Stanley HillThe guys are really committed to their chorus and they sing wonderfully.
HostSo tell us about the let's talk about the Modern Men Coachella Volley men's course.
HostFirst of all, how many members are there?
Stanley HillWell, eight years ago, there were 28.
Stanley HillNow we're over 100.
HostWow.
Stanley HillAnd the audience is growing and we're growing and we're having a wonderful time.
Stanley HillIt's a bunch of guys who love to sing.
HostAnd tell me about your, your artistic director.
HostHave you been involved from.
HostFrom the beginning?
HostFrom the start of the whole group?
Stanley HillI came on in 2016, and they were three years old when I came on.
HostOkay.
Stanley HillAnd I've been there in their 11th year, and I've been with them eight years.
HostAnd tell us a little bit about the.
HostYour, your background before that.
HostBefore you became the artistic director of the course.
Stanley HillFrom 89 to 2000, I was the artistic director of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.
Stanley HillAnd then from 2000 to 2012, I was the artistic director of the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus in Minneapolis.
Stanley HillAnd then I came to the desert to retire.
Stanley HillAnd you know how that goes, Bonnie.
HostYes, I know.
HostSo many people, performers have said that came to the desert to retire, and I've never been busier.
HostYeah, it happens a lot.
Stanley HillExactly.
HostSo tell us about the course.
HostHow many special events or concerts a year do you usually do?
Stanley HillWe do two major concerts, one in December and one in April.
Stanley HillAnd then we have run outs and concerts like the one at St.
Stanley HillMargaret's where we're doing it to benefit something.
Stanley HillYou know, we're, we're doing it as a fundraiser or we're doing it to get out into the community.
HostAnd who, who decides?
HostIs there a committee or is it just you that decides?
HostOkay, well, this event, we're going to have sort of this kind of theme or this.
HostWe're going to choose this music.
HostIs that all your job or do you have folks that assist with that?
Stanley HillWell, I come up with the theme and the music, and I like, I tell them I have an open door.
Stanley HillIf you have a song that you want to do, I want to hear about it.
Stanley HillAnd what they do is they submit ideas and what does it look like?
Stanley HillAnd because we're at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, I have a great graphic designer who will put up onto the big screen thematic visualizations of all of the music.
Stanley HillAnd it really makes for an inclusive experience.
Stanley HillIt's really fun.
Stanley HillPeople love it.
HostYeah.
HostNow, are you going to be in the larger, the largest theater at the Cultural center?
Stanley HillOkay.
HostOkay.
HostAnd as far as.
HostSo do you have.
HostYou have tenor, bass, baritone, you have all parts in the course.
Stanley HillFour parts.
Stanley HillFirst and second, tenor, baritone and bass.
HostOkay.
HostAnd tell us about.
HostWell, tell us about the holiday concert.
HostThe one on.
HostThat's both on the fort.
HostSaturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th.
HostTell us a little bit about that.
HostAnd I mean, there's so much holiday music to choose from.
HostHow do you sort of winnow it down, down.
Stanley HillI pick beautiful music and fun things.
Stanley HillSo we're doing an incredible Hanukkah piece called We Are the Lights.
Stanley HillWe're also doing a wonderful piece that is brand new, hot off the press called Go Said the Star, which is rhythmically outstanding.
Stanley HillWe're doing a piece that will touch you.
Stanley HillIt's called Our First Christmas and it's written by one of the guys in the chorus.
Stanley HillAnd we're doing the Christmas cancan, which is absolutely bananas.
Stanley HillIt's just crazy.
Stanley HillIt's Christmas Carol set to the can can music.
HostAnd will there be some can can dancing along the way?
Stanley HillNo, but we will have dancing in Dear Santa, Bring me a man for Christmas to the tune of its raining men.
HostAh, okay.
Stanley HillThat'll be a little craziness.
Stanley HillWe get a little serious in the second act because we are doing a tribute to our dear friend and one of the greatest composers for lgbt, LGBT music that ever lived, Bob Seeley.
Stanley HillWe're doing a couple of his pieces which are absolutely exquisite.
Stanley HillAnd you're gonna.
Stanley HillEveryone who comes there is gonna go away saying, oh my God, that's the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Stanley HillAnd we always close with why we sing, which invol the audience because we surround the audience and we sing to them because the reason why we sing is our audience.
HostRight, Right.
HostWe need to.
HostAll right, we're going to take a very quick break here on the desert scene with Stanley Hill.
HostWe'll be right back.

HostThey've got a big holiday concert coming up on both Saturday December 14th and Sunday the 15th, Advocate Palm Springs Cultural Center.
HostSo did you start out as a singer yourself way back when?
HostIs that how you got involved in music in general?
Stanley HillA million years ago?
Stanley HillYes.
Stanley HillI was a singer from 8 years old.
HostAnd what, what at some point did you find that you had sort of the leadership quality, the organizational ability to sort to be artistic director?
HostThat that was really where your, your path was?
Stanley HillWell, the trial by fire is teaching in the public schools.
Stanley HillI had two 100 voice girls, seventh grade girls, glees.
HostWow.
Stanley HillAnd that burnt out the fuse in my brain about names.
Stanley HillSo I had 25 Suzies and 15 Janets.
Stanley HillAnd it was crazy, but I got through it.
Stanley HillI was there 11 years in the Anaheim school district.
Stanley HillAnd then I got my master's and doctorate and went to San Francisco as the artistic director.
HostExcellent.
HostLet's talk about tickets, how people can find out.
HostLet's first, let's talk about the thing of December 8th at St Margaret's what time is that and how can people find out?
HostAnd how can they go.
Stanley HillIt's at 3:00 at St.
Stanley HillMargaret's that's out on Highway 74.
HostOkay.
Stanley HillAnd they can get tickets by going to.
Stanley HillThis is a little confusing, but I'll spell it out.
Stanley HillJoint 24H, J O I N T.
Stanley Hill24.
Stanley HillAnd that takes them right to the ticket site.
HostOkay.
HostAnd then the one at the cultural center is that I see on some information I have here, it says ticketsodernmen.org where would people find the tickets?
Stanley HillThat's it.
HostOkay, super.
HostAnd let's talk about how many regulars do you have?
HostThe folks that are gentlemen that are in the course now, how many of them would have been there, you know, five, six, seven, eight years?
HostDo you have a lot of turnover?
Stanley HillOh, not so much turnover as it continues to build.
Stanley HillYou always have.
Stanley HillWe have some snowbirds that can only do the April show and we have.
Stanley HillBecause we start in January for the April show.
Stanley HillAnd we have.
Stanley HillYes, we have about.
Stanley HillOf the original.
Stanley HillWe probably have over a dozen of the original charter members of the chorus still singing with us.
HostThat's excellent.
HostThat's nice.
HostI imagine some great friendships grow out from that, that whole experience.
Stanley HillThere's several reasons to join a community chorus, but one of them is, besides singing and having fun, is the socialization.
Stanley HillI mean, we have such a good time.
Stanley HillI for one, cannot go home and go to bed.
Stanley HillAfter a rehearsal, we get out at 9:30 and I am wired.
Stanley HillI'm so excited.
Stanley HillThrough a rehearsal.
Stanley HillSo we end up going out and 30 to 40 of us go out, we have a cocktail together and we tell jokes and we laugh and we have a wonderful time.
Stanley HillIt's a great bunch of men.
HostThat's fabulous.
HostI just want to read one thing before we go.
HostI hear I said our values include.
HostI want to read one of them.
HostWe embrace the uniqueness that different cultures, ideas and people bring to our group, knowing that together we become richer and stronger.
HostI love that.
HostThat's a great.
HostWell, Stanley Hill, congratulations.
HostKeep up the good work.
HostThe holiday concerts again, Saturday, December 14th and Sunday the 15th at the Corner Cultural Center.
