Welcome to Barbecue Nation with JT and Leanne After Hours, the conversation that continued after the show was done.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AAs promised, it's after hours here on the Nation with Leanne and Graham this week and Graham hasn't been on well, it's been a year.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker AI got a couple new questions for him and we will see what, what his answers are.
Speaker AWe'll start with something easy.
Speaker AWhat's your favorite Christmas song?
Speaker BChristmas song?
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BAre you going to answer this as well?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CThat's kind of hard.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ANow come on.
Speaker CI like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer because I know the words.
Speaker AWhat's the one?
Speaker CHoly night, whatever that one is.
Speaker CSilent Night.
Speaker CI like that one.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BIf I sing, I sing above and below notes so it's not infringe copyright and.
Speaker BNobody allows me to sing normally, so.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BGood king cooking.
Speaker BGood king Wednesday yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker AMine's grandma got run over by a reindeer.
Speaker BOh my.
Speaker BGood king Wednesdays Good king Wednesday in his Austin 7 he ran into a trolley bus and now he's up in heaven.
Speaker BOh, there you go.
Speaker AThere you go.
Speaker BI had to do that.
Speaker AWhat's the, what's the weirdest gift you ever received or gave?
Speaker AThe weirdest Christmas gift.
Speaker BWeirdest.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd I have gone somewhere.
Speaker BI think my weirdest one because of the result was I sent every one of my children a mixture of seeds of some of the great lettuces of the world.
Speaker BI had 14 different varieties.
Speaker AOh, my.
Speaker BI mixed the seeds together.
Speaker BI gave them instructions on how to cut up a part of their lawn and be able to have a row of lettuce there.
Speaker BI gave them marvelously hand decorated.
Speaker BThings to stick in the ground which had the names of these great lettuces.
Speaker BAnd I gave them a salad recipe and sent them my own vinaigrette.
Speaker BWasn'T it?
Speaker BNow, now that sounds odd, but now here, here's the kicker.
Speaker BNot one of them did it.
Speaker COh.
Speaker CAfter all that love my family.
Speaker BSo all of that effort.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI've had situations like that where you, you go to their home or.
Speaker ASee them in some setting and there's the gift you gave them for Christmas over in the corner.
Speaker AIt's barely been opened, you know, so.
Speaker AYes, I understand that, Leanne.
Speaker CYou know, I was thinking while Graham was speaking and I just can't think of anything that was strange that I gave.
Speaker CNo, I can't think of anything.
Speaker AWhat about something you received?
Speaker CCoal in my stocking.
Speaker CThat's not a good sign.
Speaker AI give my sister in law that every Christmas.
Speaker ASo it's Become a tradition.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CHow about you?
Speaker AMe?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker AI think that it was a great gift, but a friend of mine again at Costco bought one of those.
Speaker AI think it was like £15, £20 of prosciutto on the bone, and it came with this little stanchion, and it came with this exceedingly long knife that the Spanish were supposed to be trimming this because this one came from Spain.
Speaker ATrimming this prosciutto off with.
Speaker AAnd I ate prosciutto for, like, weeks until I couldn't eat it anymore, but it was huge.
Speaker CThat's a really nice gift.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd because I use it a lot in my cooking.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AAnd I. I really enjoy it, and I tend to doctor things up, you know, green beans, salads, what have you with it.
Speaker ABut that thing, I think after about a month and a half, it wasn't going to go bad.
Speaker AIt was in the fridge, too.
Speaker ABut I finally, I just went out and hacked off a bunch of huge pieces and froze them, vacuum packed them and froze them, and then got rid of it.
Speaker ABut I still have the stand and that knife.
Speaker AI can, you know, I use it now for planting lettuce in the garden.
Speaker AGraham.
Speaker ASo anyway, Graham, what's.
Speaker ASomething strange that you received?
Speaker BYeah, we have good gift givers.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BIsn't it strange?
Speaker BThat is.
Speaker BIt's such a good question, because I know that there are things I've opened and looked at and thinking, huh?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CI know.
Speaker CYou can't think of it, right?
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AAll right, well, we can come back to it.
Speaker AWe can come back to it.
Speaker BI'm sitting here thinking, oh, now you're showing your age.
Speaker AOh, no, no, no, no, no, you're fine.
Speaker AOkay, here's.
Speaker AHere's another question.
Speaker AWe'll start with Leanne.
Speaker AAnd I know the standard answer is it didn't happen, but it happens to all of us.
Speaker AWhat is the biggest train wreck you ever.
Speaker AHad when creating Christmas dinner?
Speaker CBiggest train wreck?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ASomething that didn't turn out right.
Speaker ALike you burnt the.
Speaker AThe rolls, for example.
Speaker AYou put them in the oven and you forgot they were there.
Speaker CWell, yeah, that invariably happens, I'm sure.
Speaker CNothing really interesting.
Speaker CI've overcooked a prime rib before, which is disaster, but I can't think of anything offhand.
Speaker CYou got me Again.
Speaker CNo disasters.
Speaker ATwo for two, Graham.
Speaker BWell.
Speaker BThe thing that was very public for me was that my Hunt Wesson was a major sponsor of the Gallup and Gourmet series way back and 70s, and they were a bit concerned about me having all of this rich, expensive Dishes from around the world.
Speaker BAnd they said, we really would like you to do an economy dish, something really cheap.
Speaker BFor many millions of viewers.
Speaker BAnd they really need that, you see.
Speaker BSo I did a stuffed pepper dish, and it happened that the studio had a problem with lighting during that time.
Speaker BAnd it set, and I'd done one ahead of time, and it had set in a lukewarm oven for quite a long period of time.
Speaker BAnd the one when I brought it out, it sagged a little bit.
Speaker BAnd I had.
Speaker BI had this young student who was gorgeous.
Speaker BYou know, I used to try and get gorgeous things like Leanne out of the audience and have come across.
Speaker BAnd so she came and she sat down and she was going to make.
Speaker BShe was going to enjoy this.
Speaker BShe poke her fork in it and she pulled this awful face.
Speaker BAnd I went into mine and it was sour and just awful.
Speaker BAnd she said, this is really awful.
Speaker BI said, I agree with you completely.
Speaker BWe spent the whole half hour on international television showing something, and Hunt Wesson said, okay, just keep on doing the dishes you do.
Speaker BSo that was a very.
Speaker BAnd I can still remember her face and how bad it was.
Speaker AYeah, this isn't a Christmas dish, but 10, 12 years ago, they asked me to do a Halloween show.
Speaker AAnd so I came up with a monster meatloaf.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AVery.
Speaker ANothing out of the ordinary out of the meatloaf recipe, but the way the meatloaf was decorated to look like a ghoul or something, you know, same type of thing.
Speaker AI made one ahead of time.
Speaker AIt was in the oven there.
Speaker AWe come to the same.
Speaker AAnd I've made it all in this segment.
Speaker AAnd, you know, and now through the magic of television, I pull it out.
Speaker AAnd not to be crass about it, but it looked like somebody had already eaten it.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AIt just looked horrible.
Speaker AAnd we kind of cut and went off to roasting marshmallows or something, whatever.
Speaker ABut I just remember looking at that and they had already had the web.
Speaker AThe recipe posted on the website.
Speaker AAnd I noticed in the teas, they didn't.
Speaker ABecause usually they'll take a hero shot of the food and use it.
Speaker ANot this time.
Speaker ANope.
Speaker AIt didn't.
Speaker AIt didn't work out.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker AWhat's your favorite color?
Speaker ALifesaver?
Speaker AGraham Red.
Speaker AI. I can go with that.
Speaker CThat is over that.
Speaker CEverybody loves the red.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AOkay, we're going to go back to a little music for a second.
Speaker AWhat is one song you want to hear on the radio when you go out and get in your car and.
Speaker AAnd to go somewhere?
Speaker AWhat's the first song you would.
Speaker ANot that you will hear it, but you would like to hear it.
Speaker AIt always kind of brings a smile to your face.
Speaker BMe.
Speaker BCan it go?
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker BEvery time I come in through the front door of our new life here, I shout when I come through the.
Speaker BC' est moi.
Speaker BAnd she calls me c' est moi.
Speaker BYou know, Chip back.
Speaker BSo I love that.
Speaker BI love that.
Speaker BI love it.
Speaker AThis is for both of you, because I know Leanne's done a lot of tv, too.
Speaker AWhat's the funniest thing you ever saw when doing a TV show, but that the folks at home never saw it.
Speaker AIt got cut or.
Speaker AAnd if it was live, they changed the camera shot and went to some else.
Speaker ABut whether, you know, if you do local television or even national television, there's always somebody, the host of the show is there to talk with you while you're cooking and sample the food, what have you.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd, you know, if something ever went amiss with that start.
Speaker AStart with Graham.
Speaker BOkay, so doing cherries.
Speaker BCherries.
Speaker BFor cherries jubilee, I poured on a large quantity of brandy in order to get the flames going properly, and a flame shot up into the air at least 10ft.
Speaker BAnd it triggered the automatic fire system in the studios.
Speaker BThat didn't mean that it suddenly started raining on everybody, but it sent a private signal, a low signal to the local fire station and letting them know that there was a fire in Studio A.
Speaker BAnd they, without ringing their bells on everything else, sent a fire engine and sent these men in yellow slickers running into Studio A.
Speaker BThe doors burst open, and I was still cooking on top, and.
Speaker BAnd they run in with their hoses to put the fire out.
Speaker BI love it.
Speaker CWow.
Speaker BAnd the director at that time.
Speaker BStop the.
Speaker ADamn it.
Speaker BWhy did he stop the camera?
Speaker BIt would be the most wonderful thing.
Speaker AOh, yes, yes, yes, absolutely.
Speaker CWell, I had an incident happen with me, and I'm usually pretty good with lists and everything that I need to bring, but one of.
Speaker COf the things I was supposed to make was fried green tomatoes, and I couldn't find green tomatoes anywhere, so I just thought, oh, I'll leave it out.
Speaker CWell, then I'm on set, and they're like, okay, now tell us about your fried green tomatoes.
Speaker CAnd I. I didn't have any.
Speaker CSo that.
Speaker CThat's about it.
Speaker AYeah, I had it.
Speaker AI had a deal.
Speaker AMaybe I've brought this up on the show before, but I've worked with my friend Helen Raptis at the show here in Portland because I few other ones.
Speaker AAnd Helen is what we would call Lily lipped.
Speaker AAll right.
Speaker AShe.
Speaker AAnything really spicy or anything.
Speaker AShe's gotten better over the years, but anything that's really spicy.
Speaker ASo my assignment that day was to cook jalapeno poppers.
Speaker AAnd I went to the store and I selected a dozen or whatever I got, and I brought them home and I sliced them and I cleaned them out, and there was no seeds.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AAnd we went through that little routine on the air.
Speaker AAnd then I. I don't even remember what I put in them.
Speaker AIt was probably pork or something and some bacon and so on and so forth.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AAnd Helen said, before we went on the air, she said, are.
Speaker AIs this hot?
Speaker AAnd I said, no, because I just ate one.
Speaker AWell, you both know that you can eat one.
Speaker AAnd it's like eaten cold cereal.
Speaker ANot really, but, you know, as far as temperature wise.
Speaker AAnd then the next one could be Mount Vesuvius.
Speaker ARight, right.
Speaker ASo they look beautiful on the platter.
Speaker AAnd Helen.
Speaker AAnd we've got like a minute and a half left of the segment, and Helen reaches in and she bites one, and it's still got some crunch to it, and she's chewing.
Speaker AAnd Helen is a redhead, bright red hair, and in about eight seconds, her face was as bright as her hair, and she can't breathe.
Speaker COh, boy.
Speaker AShe's gasping for air.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AYou guys know this behind.
Speaker ABehind the set that you're working on behind the table or whatever.
Speaker AI have my water down there, right.
Speaker AIt's off camera like that, and I'm trying to give her my water, and she's slamming the table, and she ends up on the floor gasping for air, reaving in misery.
Speaker AAnd of course, I'm very sympathetic.
Speaker AI'm bed over in hysterics.
Speaker AAnd the cameras are going up and down because they're laughing at her.
Speaker AAnd she goes, take us out, take us out.
Speaker ABecause we had to go to break.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker AAnd so take us out like that.
Speaker AAnd that has become kind of an iconic little bit of history around Channel two and bloopers.
Speaker CYeah, I bet.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThe blooper reel.
Speaker AI think it was on YouTube for a while.
Speaker AI think they pulled it.
Speaker ABut anyway.
Speaker AAll right, last question.
Speaker AThis one's for Graham because you've.
Speaker AYou've already done this land.
Speaker AIf I gave you a box with everything you have lost in your life and for Christmas, you could pull one thing out of that box, what would you reach for?
Speaker BLet's see.
Speaker CHe's going back in time.
Speaker AHe is.
Speaker BYes, I am indeed.
Speaker BI Am indeed.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BI would want the notes that I.
Speaker BThat I read that I had written out before Thanksgiving two years ago.
Speaker BAnd that had fallen to the floor.
Speaker BAnd I went down on both knees under the dining table and scrabbled around until I got my notes.
Speaker BI needed my notes.
Speaker BWhen I was down on both knees, I saw two feet, and it was clear.
Speaker BI recognized the feet belonged to Nancy.
Speaker BAnd because of the shoes, I recognized the shoes.
Speaker BSo I look up, and there is Nancy towering over me.
Speaker BSo I look up and I say to her, would you consider spending the rest of your days of your life with me?
Speaker BAnd she said to me, are you asking me to marry you?
Speaker BYou know, because I could have just been.
Speaker BAnd I said, yeah, of course.
Speaker BYou know, Will you marry me?
Speaker BAnd she said, yes.
Speaker BSo I. I would dearly love to have that.
Speaker BThose notes, I've lost them.
Speaker BBut it would be wonderful to know what got me down on both knees.
Speaker CThat's great.
Speaker AThat's a great story.
Speaker BThat was not a plan thing.
Speaker BThat was.
Speaker AOh, I bet not.
Speaker CYeah, I did.
Speaker CThat's awesome.
Speaker AWell, Graham, my.
Speaker AMy friend, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
Speaker AI know you will.
Speaker AAnd keep that tie.
Speaker AI want to see that tie again at some point.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BIt's where we are.
Speaker BBut.
Speaker BBut it's.
Speaker BIt's okay.
Speaker BI'll have it here for you.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAll right.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BAnd Leanne, again, so good to see both of you.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker CWell, you too.
Speaker CAnd have a great holiday, both of you, and all of our listeners, too.
Speaker AYeah, well, you and I will see each other again, but.
Speaker ABut.
Speaker AWe won't probably see Graham before Christmas.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker AAnyway, and for everybody listening Huckleberry jam.
Speaker BIn any way, I'm.
Speaker AI'm working on it.
Speaker AI'm working on it.
Speaker CIt's got to be out there somewhere.
Speaker AI've got all my little food mafia elves looking for it for you.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker AThank you for joining us this week on After Hours.
Speaker AAnd don't forget, if you didn't catch the regular show, go back and find that it'.
Speaker AAll the different platforms.
Speaker ASo on and so on and so forth, there's a lot of them were easy to find.
Speaker ASo for Leanne and Graham, thank you for listening.
Speaker ARemember our motto here.
Speaker ATurn it, don't burn it, Go out, have some fun and be kind.
Speaker ATake care, everybody.
