Daniel Murray: Welcome to a new special series called The Bathroom Break. That extra 10 minutes you either have to listen to marketing tips or use the bathroom, or both. But I
Jay Schwedelson: don't recommend both, but that's your choice. This collab's gonna be super fun. We have Daniel Murray from The Marketing Millennials, and me, Jay Schwedelson from the Do This Not That podcast, and subjectline.com.
Jay Schwedelson: Each episode in the series we are gonna go over quick tips about different marketing topics, and if you wanna be in the bathroom, fine, just don't tell us about it. Thanks for checking it out. We are back for another Bathroom Break. I'm Jay Schwedelson from Do This Not That, and I'm here with Daniel Murray from The Marketing Millennials.
Jay Schwedelson: And before we get into why June is a wild month for business to business and consumer and whatever category you're in, Daniel, I had a question for you. I wanna know if I'm a horrible person. So I was at Publix, uh, which is a supermarket where we all live, and I was there with my daughter, and there were these, you know, we were going to check out, and I couldn't decide which line was gonna be faster, so I told my daughter to go wait on this other line, and I waited on the other line.
Jay Schwedelson: And then her line started to move up faster than mine, so I pushed the cart over there to her line, 'cause she was, like, had a spot. But then the person behind her thought that that wasn't cool and gave us, like, a really bad stare for kinda, like, doing that move. Do you think that that is an unacceptable move to c- like divide and conquer when you're in a supermarket?
Daniel Murray: No, it's strategic. I think it's a strategic move. Um, I grew- like, my parents grew up in South Africa, and in South Africa, like, they have a huge problem of just, like, cutting the line. So my mom will always- Okay ... wanna cut lines, and my mom, that is not cool. She will, she will literally go up and cut the line, you know?
Daniel Murray: Like, I can't handle that, but if you just strategically, like, standing in two lines- But I don't understand.
Jay Schwedelson: Wait, you're in line for something, there's, like, 20 people, and your mom would just walk up and to, like, the front? No, she'll go to the
Daniel Murray: front. She'll, like, figure out a way to, like, go... Or she's like, "I'm not standing in this line if, if it's long."
Daniel Murray: So it's like two or both the- Wow. Yeah. She, she won't wait in line. You're
Jay Schwedelson: lucky that you didn't grow up with, like, no patience. Or, like, what if you're at Disney World, there's a line, and you're like, "No, I'm not waiting." Oh, my goodness. Me
Daniel Murray: and my brothers get so embarrassed because she, we'll go into a restaurant and they'll have one person in line, and she's like, "It's too busy.
Daniel Murray: We have to go." "We have to go." And it takes longer to go to the next restaurant than just wait for that table. Right. But since there's one person in line, she'll, "
Jay Schwedelson: Gotta go. We're, we're done." Oh, wow. I gotta hang out with your mom. She seems to, like, handle these situations better than me. Um, all right. So let's talk about what's coming.
Jay Schwedelson: I don't think, uh, some of this stuff is not on people's radar. The month of June is gonna be unlike any other month of June that we've seen recently, and there's a lot going on, so I'll drop t- uh, uh, the first one that's a big deal, and then, and I know you got some others. So- What's, uh, off people's radar is the second half of June all the way through until, uh, the second week of July, it's actually one of the worst performing times for different types of things.
Jay Schwedelson: So for example, the second half of June through the first f- through the second week of July is the third worst period, besides for Thanksgiving and the, uh, Christmastime end of year, for webinar show-up rates, for B2B content downloads, uh, and for high, uh, ticket, uh, consumer products. Uh, that period of time does worse than almost any other time of the year, 'cause look, you got summer travel, kids out of school, uh, you got all this other stuff going on.
Jay Schwedelson: So if you're not, if you're not baking that time period, that kind of three-week period into your calendar, you need to factor it in because you don't think as a marketer. It's just a very difficult time to market. What other stuff goes on in June, Daniel, that you see?
Daniel Murray: Yeah. So there's an event that's happening that happens every four years, but it's like, it's not gonna happen in the US for a long period of time, and the way it's doing in the US is different than most countries because there's, every city's a host city, so New York, New Jersey is a host city, Miami's a host city, Seattle's a host city, and they have different things going on in every city, and different fan events and all this stuff, but it's a perfect time.
Daniel Murray: We talk about this before, but- What's the event? You didn't say what the event was. He's getting ahead of himself. He's so anxious. Like, he's the, cutting the line like my mom. Um- ... the FIFA World Cup. Um, the US is in the FIFA. They're in a good, um, pool this year, so they have a good chance of getting it. But, like, doing emails with, I'm pretty sure this will work, but we haven't te- you- we've done...
Daniel Murray: It's not tested, but having goal or having offer that says USA 10, or, um, having offers around the game and having emails themed like that. People are watching this. It's in New York. It's in Miami. People are going to it. Um, they're hyped up about it, so get your e- And if it's the worst time of the year, play into, like, the be- one of the best events that's, uh, is happening in the US and one of the best happening worldwide.
Daniel Murray: It's even better if you're a worldwide company because people from Brazil are watching, people from England are watching, people from, um, the Middle East are watching. So this is a great time to frame your offers, frame your emails, frame your subject lines, frame your headers with soccer or football-themed, um, copy.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah, in general, and that's for every market, every category. The first games that are gonna be in the US are gonna start on June 12th, so this is something everyone needs to be thinking about now, about how you're gonna incorporate it in. And before I go to the last one, Daniel, do you say football or do you say soccer?
Daniel Murray: Well, it's hard to ba- I have to say soccer 'cause we live here and nobody, everybody... And I played football, so but I grew up in South Africa, so everybody calls it football, and they, th- and my cousins that live in London, they make fun of me that I call it soccer. It's like, "Soccer, soccer." Uh, but I, I... It is football everywhere but the US, but the US, it's soccer, so.
Daniel Murray: There it is. Yeah. Yes.
Jay Schwedelson: We won't, and also we wanna, we wanna take on the metric system. Yeah. All right, the last one is Amazon Prime Day, and you're like, "What? I don't even care about Prime Day." Listen, first of all, Amazon Prime Day is usually in July. This year, though, they're moving it to the second week of June.
Jay Schwedelson: They haven't announced the firm date yet, but it's like, uh, uh, uh, rising tides lifts all boats. Prime Day lifts all marketing, business-to-business marketing. I don't care if you're in a regulated industry, consumer marketing, nonprofit. When it's Prime Day, everybody's more focused on the deals that they're getting.
Jay Schwedelson: They're in their inbox more. Believe it or not, during Prime Day, people spend about 15% more time in all of their inboxes, business and consumer. So thinking about your marketing around those Prime Day dates are really important.
Daniel Murray: I think also something that I've, I've looked at is if you're not on Amazon and you are, like, an e-commerce product or a D2C product, if you just go in and search your product and see if people are searching, it will come up in the search queries and see, like, if people are searching your product a lot.
Daniel Murray: And if you're not on Amazon, um, it might be a good... Not, I'm not saying go on Amazon, but I'd say that it might be a good time doing offers around Prime Day because people are already interested in your brand and the search volume on your brand, and it might be a good way to capitalize on the rising tides fo- uh, 'cause Shopify- Yeah
Daniel Murray: also has one of the biggest days on Prime Day, too, so. All
Jay Schwedelson: right, so before we wrap up here, so do you take advantage of Prime Day? Like, do you go on there? Are you buying, like, "Oh my God, I can't wait for Prime Day. I'm gonna buy a new pair of socks"?
Daniel Murray: No, but I, I think now that I have a kid, there's so many things that you can, like, stock up on as a kid or- Yeah
Daniel Murray: and every milestone there's a, a new toy or a new thing. Cloth diapers. Yeah. New... No, not cloth diapers. I'm not a cloth diaper. I hate cloth
Jay Schwedelson: diapers. Do you think... I wanna know something. If you come across somebody and they use cloth diapers on their kid, what level of judgment do you have on that person?
Daniel Murray: I, it's just so it's like you really are either, like, you better be cleaning that very well, those cloth diapers.
Daniel Murray: You know there's, like, services to, like, pick up cloth poopy diapers and bring them back? No, I don't know that. Yeah. It's, it's crazy. Uh, but yeah, I get, I get it's saving the world, but- That's
Jay Schwedelson: a bad job, by the way.
Daniel Murray: It's, I don't know. Cloth diapers- Can I get a cloth diaper? ... cloth diapers are, uh A very interesting choice.
Daniel Murray: And I respect people who are trying to save the planet, but it's a very interesting choice to go cloth diapers.
Jay Schwedelson: Look at you trying to be all like, like, you know, not say anything offensive. No, I, I- You're allowed to judge people ... I am, I am judging
Daniel Murray: you for cloth diapers, because I would never do that. It's disgusting.
Daniel Murray: I know what my child's diaper looked like without cloth diapers, and he gets it on his clothes, and I have to clean his clothes. So imagine cleaning, like, I don't know even, how do you even clean a cloth diaper? Do you know? I have no
Jay Schwedelson: idea. Why do they exist? It seems like something that doesn't need to happen.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah. We're gonna get so many comments from people. Jay, uh, you know Jay, when,
Daniel Murray: Jay, when he had his first, first kid, he, he was alone with the, the kid, and the kid pooped and didn't know what to do, so she, he drove- That's true ... all the way to, to his wife to go change the diaper.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah, I did. I didn't know what to do.
Jay Schwedelson: That's actually fully accurate. I was a doofus. I just wonder if we will get comments like, and be like, "I can't believe you shamed cloth diapers." Uh, which we probably will. We probably will. Probably will. But we probably will. But it is Bathroom Break. It is Bathroom
Daniel Murray: Break. So. I mean, that's a big debate.
Daniel Murray: Like, like, are you, like, a regular toilet paper person, or are you like a, like a Dude Wipes type person?
Jay Schwedelson: No, I sh- I, I, I should incorporate Dude Wipes. I haven't. I'm not against it. I just, I just don't, I, I have no, I just don't care. The whole
Daniel Murray: world doesn't use, like, most of the world doesn't use toilet paper, which is crazy.
Daniel Murray: They use, like, bidets and, like, cloth-like stuff. It's weird. I don't know. Yeah, a little. That's why we're here. But this is going down a, a different path- ... and we need to stop talking.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah. All right. Everybody, keep following the show, subscribe, do something I don't know later. Daniel, come on, man, I gotta get back to work.
