Hey everybody. Welcome back to another edition of the Daily Bible Podcast. Hey. Hello. Welcome back. And it's probably appropriate now that Sunday has passed and the announcement has been made and it's outta the bag. In fact, it was made in main service and then the parent meeting. Following up, pastor Rod, why don't you tell us about the developments in our student ministry? I think our listeners might be interested to hear about those. Again, so if you were at church on Sunday, this is old hat to you, but we're excited to welcome Lewis onto our team. He's gonna be taking over as student director for high school and junior high under the ministry that is currently known as True North. And we couldn't be more thrilled. We love Lewis. We've been able to watch him from a distance. Actually, he's been with us for many more years in what we. Been here. Yeah. We had ministry experience with him. He was in my ministry when he was in high school. He was in your ministry, pastor pj when he was in college. Yep. And now we have an opportunity to see him flex his wings under a new ministry under student ministry. He's leading that now and it's really cool to see that. One of the things that Lewis is especially gifted at that I particularly love is that it's a skilled je. He's a careful thinker and that comes across in his preaching. So even though he's young in his preaching skills, he's really good at drawing observations out and and helping out with making good conclusions. I think he's really good at that, so I appreciate him. I'm glad to have him in the saddle. I think he's gonna be a very good leader in that ministry, helping other leaders grow, helping our students grow. It's gonna be a new chapter of the ministry, but I believe it's gonna be a good one. Yeah. Yeah. And he's stepping into it is such an important role. Student ministry is something that you value. I value. We both got our start in, in ministry and student ministry and you served for quite a long time there. And it's just such a important season and time. And we don't believe that our job as the church is to take on the full mantle of discipling the students of the families in our church, but to come alongside you use the terminology co champion, right? Along with the parents and pointing them to Christ and helping them in that. And that's why we do it. And that's why we think it is so imperative and so important. They're facing a lot of unique things. And for me as a senior pastor, lead pastor, when I get up and I preach on Sunday mornings I. I'm preaching to a room that is facing all kinds of different situations and while I do my best to try to think through applicational situations and circumstances as I'm up there preaching, a lot of those are gonna be geared towards adults because that's the primary audience that's in the room. And so for our students, we still want them there on Sunday morning. Undoubtedly they should be in church. Parents. Hear us say that as well. You're junior high school student, they should be in church on Sunday morning. It's a good time for them to learn what that's and what that looks like. And to worship there, even if they're not saved, they should still be there. This is a good thing for them. But it's also good for them to have in student ministry, a place where they can plug in and connect and get to know what their students and hear messages that are more geared and tailored towards what they're facing on a weekly basis in student ministry, in school, and things like that. Absolutely the targeted teaching makes it worth it all by itself. But indeed, we are co championing the discipleship of your child. And so we believe that we play a significant role, not in any way diminishing your role. You are the primary disciple. We would affirm that. But if you're saying is it 60, 40, 30, 70? What's the number? And I don't know if that's helpful. It's more helpful to say, we co champion the discipleship of your child. We are partnering with you to help accomplish that, and you're partnering with us to help accomplish that on the other side. We are excited for this. Lewis is on board. He's excited to do it. Shea's excited too. And funny enough, Shaa was also in a ministry also part of yours. Yep. So these are people that we've invested in throughout the years and it's really sweet to have a time of harvesting some of that investment, although not fully, of course. We expect Lewis and Shaa to continue growing and making great inroads into ministry. A hundred percent we do. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe this would be a good time. To touch on revival. I know it's coming up here in about a month and a half, two months now. That's right. And so what do we, what do our parents need to know? Parents of teens out there that are listening, students that listen to this podcast, give us a plug for revival. So revival, in case you're unfamiliar with the terminology, is just a name that we use to brand our summer camp. So anytime you hear us talk about revival, most of the time we're talking about our summer camp revival, winter edition. Is as a name suggest our winter camp, our winter retreat. So revival this year is gonna be at Latham Springs, and that's about, I don't know, two and a half hours south of us here. It's in this huge facility. Lots of ground, lots of events or in activities for them to do. There's competitive games. There's gonna be preaching and teaching in part by Pastor Evan from compass, Albert Church Hill Country, which is in New Braunfels and also Lewis this year. So it's gonna be a really, it's a new year. It's gonna be a really fun year. It's gonna be lots of new things. We've never been to this place before. When I scouted it a few months ago, probably six or eight months ago at this point, with Pastor Evan from Hill Country. We thought it had a lot of potential, and in fact, if you wanna go to the website and see some of the things that they offer, there's some really cool photos there. There's a great aerial view of the whole camp. It's huge. Lots of things to do. We think your kids are gonna love it, but what they're gonna love most we trust is gonna be the fact that they're gonna have some. Great time in the word. Great time in small groups discussing and implementing what they're hearing. And this year the theme is holy. We're looking at the holiness of God and its implications for mankind. And of course there are legion applications for us about what it means that God is holy and I can't wait for your students to get involved. Yeah. That's awesome. That's awesome. Let's jump into our daily Bible reading for today. Proverbs 1920 and 21. I think we've got this, we've got tomorrow. And then are we outta Proverbs for a minute? Or maybe we've got a couple more. Anyways, to your point, last yesterday's episode, we've got this for a little while longer and then we're gonna jump back and I think to, to Chronicles and Kings and then we'll come back book wrap up in Proverbs, and then we go to Ecclesiastes. Yeah. Yep. Ecclesiastes is such a good book, man. Yeah. And then we go back to Kings and then we go to finish Proverbs. Yeah. It's a little bit of inter intertwining from here on out. I remember from this one just still being in the Old Testament as we're rounding the corner into the fall going that we're not gonna finish the New Testament. There's no way we're gonna get through. It feels like it. It does. Sometimes it does. Hey, Proverbs 19. How about verse two? Desire without knowledge is not good. And whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. What this. Struck me as this time around is we need to be suspicious of our desires. That, that initial desire that we have, that initial desire to say, I wanna go do this. I let's go do this. This is encouraging us to, to stop and to give thought to it, and to think about, okay, what's our motive? What's the reason behind this? Is this really the best use of our resources our funds, our time, and so forth and so on. Now, you could pro. Have paralysis by analysis. If you apply this across the board okay, do I want to get up and go get a sip of water right now? What's my motive in getting a sip of water? But really just thinking about your big picture, your ambitions, your dreams, why do you have those? What are those? What's the knowledge undergirding those that's leading you to make these conclusions and to do these things? Because if you run hastily into to something that you're thinking, this is what we need to do, and you make big decisions without thinking about it, then you can end up in a bad spot. I would say. Man, moving somewhere without consideration where you're gonna go to church moving away from the church, leaving a church, leaving your community group. These are all big ticket items that I would say. You need to be really careful, really slow about making that decision before you pull the trigger on that. Amen to that. Verse 14. I love this house and wealth are inherited from fathers, at least in under normal circumstances, but a prudent wife. That's from the Lord, the gift of a wife, a good wife, a prudent wife here, a wise wife, we might say is from the Lord. Husbands. Have you got that? Say amen. Give your wife a kiss and let her know that you are thankful for her because she is a gift of the Lord. Yeah. Yeah. You mentioned whenever something is repeated we need to pay attention to it. And there's a verse that's repeated almost word for word twice that's right in here, and that's verse five and verse nine. A false witness will not go unpunished. And he who breathe out lies will not escape. That's verse five. He who breathes out lies will perish in verse nine. So it's pretty much a word for word concept there, but that's just a reminder of the fact that we need to be people of truth. And when we're given a platform to bear witness to what has happened, we need to be p men and women of truth. We need to give witness to the factual events of what took place. Because if we don't, then we're putting our way in ourselves, in the way of God's wrath. And that's not a place that anybody wants to be. Yeah. And again, our words are so frivolous and carelessly deployed these days that it requires us to be. Intentional and thoughtful and even carefully considered before we send our words out. Sometimes we can accidentally lie or even just mislead people by our words. We shade them in a certain way. We use certain adjectives or nouns or pronouns. We can hide the, our, the intentions of our heart by just being really careful with their language. And that's not what I'm suggesting. What I am suggesting though, is that we be people who are forthright, honest. Let your yes be yes. And your no be no mean what you say and say what you mean. Politic politically maneuvering your words with people is I get it. There's times to be gentle and to be diplomatic in how you deliver something, especially if it has a tendency to be hurtful to somebody or trying to deliver criticism or you're trying to help them see something that maybe they haven't seen before. I get that, and I'm not suggesting that you should be cruel or harsh in their delivery, but we should be people who are honest. Forthrightness is one of those things that I feel like people just don't appreciate today. We don't do that. We hide things with words or we just try to, we say things and there's a wink and a nod. What do you get what I'm trying to say here? No we need to be people who are just. Plain speakers. We say what we mean what we say, and we try our best to communicate it in a loving way. I think that's a really helpful posture for Christians who are wise. Yeah, for sure. Verse 23, the fear of the Lord. We talked about this yesterday in the sermon a little bit in our first point there, I. Just to come back to that subject I think the fear of the Lord is something that we can so easily misunderstand as Christians, and even to try to cap capture the idea in one sermon point or even just in one full sermon is a lot. But just to clarify again, we are not fearing condemnation and judgment. That is the fear that one John four eight says that I. That we have been freed from for, I think it's for it. That, that we've been delivered from that perfect love casts out that fear. We're not fearing God the way that the unbeliever does. We're not fearing that God is gonna zap, fry us for our sin. We're not fearing God in the way that we're feeling. Condemnation and judgment and shame, carrying our guilt and shame and sin around with us for our whole lives, rather, we're fearing God in the way that. I used the illustration yesterday in a sermon. You you've got, let's take a gun. You can look at a gun and say, okay, that gun can be used for a lot of really good things. It can be self-defense, it can provide food, it can do all kinds of things like that. And yet that gun can also be used to inflict much harm and damage. And so you're gonna approach that gun in a way that is gonna be. Reverential, you're gonna have a reverence for the potential damage that gun could inflict. And yet you're still gonna approach it and use it the way that it was intended to be used. And when you do that and approach it the way you should, it's a good thing. And that's our relationship with God. When we approach God, understanding that he is good and he's holy and he's kind, and he's compassionate, but he's also a God of power and wrath and justice, then it's a good thing for us to approach him that way. And that's gonna impact the way that we live our lives. And the fear of the Lord. Verse 23 leads to life. It leads to a good thing. If you approach the Lord in the right way, man, it's gonna be a good life that you're gonna live. And whoever has it rests satisfied and won't be visited by harm ultimately that's a, that's an eschatological promise. You are gonna be satisfied for eternity and you are gonna be delivered from harm eternally. But even now, if you, generally speaking, the principle is if you conduct yourself. With the fear of the Lord, you're gonna live a life that's gonna put you in the way of blessing much more than it's gonna put you in the way of harm. Amen. Verse 27, if I can comment on this really quickly here, cease to hear instruction, my son and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Yeah. I think that speaks to the fact that we have to humbly and repeatedly hear the words that we've heard before. This is one of the reasons why we attend preaching every Sunday or whatever the frequency is for you. You go to a midweek service perhaps or something at Sunday night. We need to hear the same things over and over again. Because we need to be open to instruction because often A, we forget and two, even though we've heard it, it doesn't mean that we're applying it. If we're honest with ourselves, we need to repeatedly be exposed to arguments from scripture to have our hearts worn down, shaped, and even convinced that's the right way to go. And so Solomon wisely encourages his son. Don't be the kind of person who closes your ears as though, oh, I know this already. I've heard this sermon already. Oh I already know where the pastor's gonna go with this. Even if it isn't pastoring or preaching, rather if it's something else, you never are gonna learn all that you should learn. And especially when it comes to scripture and especially when it comes to God, there is an infinite fountain there that you will never drink the completion of. Therefore stay at it. Cease to hear instruction, my son and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Chapter 20. Then let's deal with verse one. In fact, you talked about this on Saturday at our men's Bible study as well. Wine is a mocker strong drink, a brawler, and whoever's led astray by it is not wise. Pierre, why don't you give us a kind of a synopsis, brief snapshot of that first point that you talked about, because the qualification for the Godly man is not to be a drunkard, but we talked about the fact that doesn't mean that you can't have any alcohol. So some thoughts on that. Concept. Yeah, briefly. The prohibition for the leader, the godly leader, AKA, also the pastor and the elder is to not be someone who is a drunkard. He can't be qualified or characterized by that. Someone should be able to look at his life and say, that's not true of that guy, and it's gonna be evident. Paul doesn't give commands that he's expecting someone to have heart access. None of us do. He's expecting to look at the man's life and say, I. Can tell based on the obvious watching of his life. He's not a drunker. That's what scripture calls us to. However, scripture does say you can enjoy wine. He tells Timothy in one Timothy five, take a little wine for your stomach. You're not feeling well. Hey, don't just drink water. Drink some wine that's gonna help with, the fermentation or the alcohol killing off some of the bad bugs. Who knows what he has in mind, but he does let him say. He does let him have alcohol in the first place. The challenge then is to say, okay, if God is okay with us having it, how much can we have? And the line he says is drunkenness. Some people are gonna draw the line for drunkenness of slurring speech and staggering steps, but I think the line is actually at the point where you get buzzed. I think that would be, and my best understanding of God's intention is what he's prohibiting. That we should not allow ourselves to be inebriated by the drink such that it controls us and therefore in verse. One here, wine is a mock or strong drink is a baller, a brawler. Whoever is led astray by these is not wise. You're not wise because you're allowing these things to steal your attention and your energy such that you're no longer in control of your faculties. And that's exactly what God is prohibiting. Yeah, a hundred percent. In fact you said the, one of the things about getting buzzed that I thought was helpful is you said you can't act or react with sober mindedness, right? Because you're. You're inebriated to a certain degree at least on that. And maybe you're not gonna blow over the legal limit on the breathalyzer test, but you're still out of your faculties to be able to respond, to act, and react as you put it in a way that is sober minded to honor the Lord. I. Yeah. H how about verse seven? Verse seven jumped out to me because it, it says this, it says, your righteous living is not just for you, but it's also for your children that you, when you walk in integrity, when you live a righteous life, blessed are your children after you. The Bible talks about visiting the sins of the fathers on future generations of children, and here's kinda the opposite. It's Hey, if you live a life of integrity and you set that example for your kids, that's gonna be a blessing to them. They're gonna be able to look at a mom or a dad who lived a faithful life of godliness. And that's going to turn out well for them because hopefully the idea is that train up a child in the way he's gonna go, which we're gonna get to also and he will not depart from it. If they're seeing you live that faithful life, that's gonna be a blessing to them in the long term. Amen. I just think about the way that it happens when someone dies. You end up getting access into their life access into parts that you may not see otherwise because they're a private person or it's on their computer or it's on their bookshelf or what have you. There's something so good and so sweet when you see into the secret places of a person's life and you realize they're exactly who you thought they were. Yeah. That is such a special gift that you can give your family, and that just means our job, men and women, is to be the kind of people that live what we say. We mean what we say. We say what we mean. We live with integrity, he says here, whoever walks in integrity, right? It's the righteous who walks, not just the one who talks about it. It's easy to say, you should do this. We should live that way. It's a whole other to live a life through and through that conveys the kind of integrity that God can be pleased with. And of course, we'll bless your children. There's so many numerous blessings, but not the least of which when your kids get to look in your life and disperse your. Your belongings. Let them find things that give testimony to the fact that you were faithful. Yeah. Verse 13, there is such a thing as too much sleep. Believe it or not, even though it doesn't feel like it when you're sleeping. There is such a thing as too much sleep. Love, not sleep. Lest you come to poverty, open your eyes and you will have plenty of bread. How much sleep is too much? Yeah, it that's a, I thus says the Lord. I don't know. Yeah. No but it is speaking to Slothfulness, it's speaking to those things and there's wisdom in getting rest. This is not about going, Hey, if you're not waking up at 5:00 AM every day, then you're not doing it right. There's wisdom to get rest and get the rest that your body needs. And everybody's different on that. Yeah. Molar operates on three hours of sleep at night, which I don't know is healthy, but. He does it. Don't think he does. Yeah. He figures out how to do it. And there's science behind it. I know you've read quite a bit on this subject and thought a lot about how to get consistent sleep and everything else, but I. It's in the proverbs it's a good thing for us to, to sleep well and not sleep in a way that we idolize it in such that it slows us down in our pursuit of pro productivity. Scriptures does say that he gives to his beloved rest. Yeah. He gives to his beloved rest. So that's, it's a gift of God to sleep at Psalm 1 27. It's in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest. He gives to his beloved rest. Sleep is what the word is. I think there. So there is clearly a sense in which this just goes back to the alcohol. God gives it as a gift. Yeah, it's a good gift that should be enjoyed, but it should not be overjoyed. The poison is in the dose, as some people often say, and it's incumbent upon Christians to be especially aware of these pernicious sins because they can sneak up on us. We don't realize we're being slothful and lazy, but the scripture gives us space to say, you ought to think about this. You ought to be sober minded enough to be watchful over your life, to not sleep so little that you're not stewarding your body and not to sleep so much that you're being lazy and you're not stewarding your work well. There are hazards on either side and I think that's the point here. Yeah. And probably building on that, I. As well. Same theme, chapter 21, verse 17. Then whoever loves pleasure will be a poor man and he who loves wine and oil will not be rich. Pleasure is another thing. Is it wrong to have pleasure in our life? No, it's not wrong to have pleasure in your life. It's not wrong to have leisure in your life. It's not wrong to have things that you enjoy doing or hobby that you enjoy doing. But again, it's gotta be in moderation. We've gotta approach it the right way and make sure that it doesn't become something that is enslaving to us or something that distracts us, or something that wastes our time. We're really good at wasting time. It's not hard for us to sit down and three hours later get up from the couch and be like, I did nothing other than like some Instagram reels during that three hours. We gotta be careful about how we are redeeming the time that God has given us. And and use it well and enjoy the things. Enjoy the sleep. Enjoy the wine. If you drink wine or a beer from time to time and then enjoy pleasure, but don't be mastered by any of it. And take them as they're meant to be, which are blessings from the Lord to be respites here and there rather than something that you live for. Amen to that. Verse two, actually, verse one and two. Let me just do verse one. King's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord. He turns it wherever he will. I love this because it tells me that. P President Trump is not in control totally at the end of the day, or Elon. Elon is not in control, and especially when they're fighting, they're not in control. At least in the ultimate sense, God is the one who's directing the affairs of mankind, even if it doesn't appear that way. And at the same time, God's doing so without sin or flaw. He's not participating in evil. He's not contributing to evil as though he were the direct. Participant, but he is turning the hearts of man wherever he will. So are you having an issue with your boss? Are you having an issue with your spouse? Man, pray to the Lord about that spouse's heart. The Lord can easily sway their heart in the direction that is most fitting and suitable according to scripture. Verse two, every way of man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart, which tells me simply that. Act. The act that you commit is important, but also on top of that, the Lord is also weighing your motivation. He cares about both. Yeah. Look at verse 25. The desire of the slugger kills him for his hands. Refuse to labor. I think the thing that stood out to me this time reading this is that. The difference between the sluggard and the disciplined person is not the desire, but it's the follow through. The sluggard can have all the greatest desires, can have the desire to, to climb the corporate ladder, can have the desire to have the GIC family, can have the desire to, to to work hard, can have the desire to have the house, whatever it is. The difference is, are you willing to put in the work ethic to get. From the desire to the reality of that. And that's the difference between the sluggard and the person that is enjoying the fruits of their labor is doing the hard work. The desire. Both are gonna have, it's the results of the desire is what you're gonna do with that desire. That's what differentiates. Amen. Can I just end with the last verse here? Totally. In chapter 21 verse 31. The horse is made ready for the day of battle. But the victory belongs to the Lord. Now, I think that's a great way for us to end, because what it suggests to us is that we should make the horse ready, feed the horse, exercise the horse, get all the things in place get yourself battle ready. But at the end of the day, you're not trusting the horse. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Or you gonna sing it? I will. I saw. Alright, let's try it again. Some trusts in chariots and some in horses. I'm not gonna sing it. Oh, we trust the Lord again. Yeah. Alright all this to say it's such a good thing for us to prepare, put, sock away money in your savings account. Set, set a contingency fund for yourself. Get the spare tire and keep it in the trunk. Do all the things that you should do, but don't put your trust in those things. Put your trust in the Lord. And how are you gonna know if they do that? How will you know if someone's trusting in the Lord? Has your pja give us a few indications if you on the spot here? Yeah. I, this whole thing's on the spot. What do you think we're doing? Totally. We don't prep for this at all. I think when you see somebody who's even keeled, when you see somebody who responds to difficulty in a way that their life is not turned upside down, that's an indication they're trusting in the Lord. I think when you see somebody who is quick to give glory to God when things go their way, I think that's an example that they're trusting in the Lord. Amen. When you see somebody who faces discouragement by turning to him and praying to him and pleading with him, I think you see somebody who's trusting in the Lord. That's right. Yeah. Yeah. Amen. Pray it up, folks. Yeah. Let's just do let's do just that and we will wrap up this episode. God, we are thankful for these nuggets that we get to pull outta the book of Proverbs and and we wanna be a wise people. We wanna be a people that does make the horse ready for battle, but trust ultimately in you. And so help us to do that. And help us to live lives of godliness and righteousness as a legacy for our family. God we want to enjoy the good gifts that you've given us and not be mastered by any of them. As we were talking about in this. We want to have our desires and then pursue those desires in a way that's godly and right. And Lord, help us to live. Wisely, I guess is just my request in this is, which is a big prayer request as we think about the world in which we live. 'cause there's so much that wants to pull us into the path of foolishness rather than in walking with the wise. And so help us to be a church characterized by wisdom, by giving ourselves over to your word. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. Amen.
