Speaker AThe ABC 123 Bible Study Guideline.
Speaker AAnd we'll do all of that and have a prayer in under 10 minutes.
Speaker ALet's get into our reading for today.
Speaker AIt is from the Book of Acts, chapter 10, verses 9 through 26.
Speaker AReading from the message.
Speaker AThe next day, as the three travelers were approaching the town, Peter went out on the balcony to pray.
Speaker AIt was about noon.
Speaker APeter got hungry and started thinking about lunch.
Speaker AAnd while lunch was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
Speaker AHe saw the skies open up and something that looked like a huge blanket lowered by a rope.
Speaker ASo at its four corners settled on the ground, every kind of animal and reptile and bird you can think of was on it.
Speaker AAnd then a voice came.
Speaker AGo to it, Peter.
Speaker AKill and eat.
Speaker APeter said, oh no, Lord, I've never so much as tasted food that was not kosher.
Speaker AAnd the voice came a second time.
Speaker AIf God says it's okay, it's okay.
Speaker AAnd this happened three times.
Speaker AAnd then the blanket was pulled back into the skies.
Speaker AAs Peter, puzzled, sat there trying to figure out what it all meant.
Speaker AThe men sent by Cornelius showed up at Simon's front door and they called in asking if there was a Simon also called Peter, staying there.
Speaker AAnd Peter was lost in thought and didn't hear them.
Speaker ASo the spirit whispered to him, three men are knocking at the door looking for you.
Speaker AGet down there and go with them.
Speaker ADon't ask any questions.
Speaker AI sent them to you.
Speaker APeter went down and said to them to the men, I think I'm the man you're looking for.
Speaker AWhat's up?
Speaker AAnd they said, captain Cornelius, a God fearing man well known for his fair play, ask any Jew in this part of the country, was commanded by a holy angel to get you and bring you to his house so he could hear what you had to say.
Speaker APeter invited them in and made them feel at home.
Speaker AGod plays no favorites.
Speaker AThe next morning he got up and went with him and some of his friends from Joppa went along.
Speaker AA day later they entered Caesarea.
Speaker ACornelius was expecting them, he and his relatives and close friends waiting with them.
Speaker AThe minute Peter came through through the door, Cornelius was up on his feet greeting him and then down his face worshiping him.
Speaker AAnd Peter pulled him up and said, none of that.
Speaker AI'm a man and only man, no different than you.
Speaker AInteresting passage of scripture for us to contend with here today on Daily Bible Refresh.
Speaker AIt's really about breaking down barriers.
Speaker AAnd the transformative moment is in the early life of the Christian church that really challenges the people in that era and challenges us about our own biases and boundaries.
Speaker ALet me give you a few points to ponder.
Speaker AOne of them has to do with challenging sacred traditions.
Speaker APeter's vision directly confronts the deeply held religious beliefs about what is clean and unclean, particularly when it comes to things to eat.
Speaker AAnd this story though, isn't just about dietary laws.
Speaker AIt's about questioning systems and traditions that create barriers between people.
Speaker AIn our contemporary context, this challenges us to examine what religious or cultural or political rules we might be holding onto that exclude or marginalize others.
Speaker AAnd sometimes what we consider traditional or sacred might actually be standing in the way of divine inclusion.
Speaker AThere is the divine disruption of privilege.
Speaker AThe spirit deliberately disrupts Peter's comfortable religious worldview.
Speaker AAs a Jewish leader, Peter had certain privileges and assumptions about who was in and who was out of God's favor.
Speaker AThe divine voice challenges these assumptions, suggesting that our human made boundaries often conflict with the divine.
Speaker AWelcome.
Speaker AThis speaks to our modern context about examining our own privileges and how we might and how they might blind us to the full humanity of other people.
Speaker AA third thing, dismantling religious hierarchy.
Speaker AWhen Cornelius falls at Peter's feet, Peter's response is remarkable.
Speaker ANone of that, I'm, I'm a man and just a man, he says, no different than, than you.
Speaker AThis radical equality challenges religious authority structures that elevate some people above others.
Speaker AIt suggests that authentic spirituality isn't about maintaining power or hierarchies, but about recognizing a shared humanity and the the divine worth of all people.
Speaker ALet me give you an action step.
Speaker AIdentify one area, one boundary or barrier in your own life that might be excluding others from full participation in your community.
Speaker AThis could be a physical barrier, you know, like accessibility or a policy or some unwritten social rule and take a concrete step to address it.
Speaker AFor example, you may be to kind of audit your social circle, like who's missing?
Speaker AWho can we be inclusive of here and who doesn't have access to our space?
Speaker AThen make a plan, a specific plan, to expand your circle of inclusion.
Speaker AWe're gonna have a closing prayer in just a moment here, but I did want you to know we have a resource for you that I really want you to take advantage of.
Speaker AIt's called the ABC 123 Bible Study Guide.
Speaker AAnd it's a simple.
Speaker AIt's just three or four pages long.

Speaker AThank you for making us uncomfortable when our comfort comes at the cost of excluding others.
Speaker AGive us courage to question our assumptions, wisdom to recognize our privileges, and strength to build bigger tables, not higher walls.
