Speaker A

We give you an action step to take.

Speaker A

Speaker A

Here's our reading for the day from John 3:16 21 from the message this is how much God loved the world.

Speaker A

He gave His Son his one and only Son, and this is why.

Speaker A

So that no one need be destroyed.

Speaker A

By believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

Speaker A

God didn't go to all the trouble of sending His Son merely to point an accusing finger telling the world how bad it is.

Speaker A

He came to help to put the world right again.

Speaker A

Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted.

Speaker A

Anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death of sentence without knowing it.

Speaker A

And why?

Speaker A

Because of that person's failure to believe in the one of a kind Son of God when introduced to Him.

Speaker A

This is the crisis we're in.

Speaker A

God Light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness.

Speaker A

They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God.

Speaker A

Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God light and won't come near it, fearing a painful exposure.

Speaker A

But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God light.

Speaker A

So the work can be seen for the God work that it is.

Speaker A

Well, my friends, today we're really exploring one of Christianity's greatest and most noted passages of the Bible, John 3:16 and what follows it.

Speaker A

And in this passage we really find a radical message of universal love and liberation as opposed to exclusion and judgment.

Speaker A

John 3:16 has often been used as a litmus test for kind of who's in and who's out.

Speaker A

But reading it in context reveals a much more expansive vision of God's divine love and cosmic restoration.

Speaker A

So let's get into some points to ponder Cosmic love, not individual selection.

Speaker A

The text here speaks of God loving, quote, the world.

Speaker A

In the Greek, the word is cosmos.

Speaker A

That means not just individual human souls, but all creation.

Speaker A

This cosmic vision challenges narrow interpretations focused solely on personal salvation.

Speaker A

So how might this broader understanding shape our response to things like the climate crisis or species extinction, environmental justice and political upheaval?

Speaker A

The second point is about liberation, not condemnation.

Speaker A

This passage explicitly states that God's purpose isn't condemnation, but but restoration to put the world right again.

Speaker A

This challenges punitive theology and suggests that divine judgment is about healing, not punishment.

Speaker A

So how does this affect yours and my understanding of justice, both divine and human?

Speaker A

A third point is about truth telling as sacred practice.

Speaker A

The imagery here of light versus darkness isn't about moral dualism, but about transparency and truth telling.

Speaker A

In an area of, quote, alternate facts and denial about things like climate change and systematic racism and economic inequality.

Speaker A

How do we practice radical truth telling that leads to transformation?

Speaker A

So here's your action step.

Speaker A

Practice illuminated accountability.

Speaker A

What I mean by that is to choose an area where you've kind of avoided the light, perhaps some unconscious bias or about environmental impact, economic privilege, anything along that line, and then research its impact on, for instance, marginalized communities, or join some support groups or organizations addressing that issue or create some specific action steps towards change.

Speaker A

Share your journey with others and maybe inspire collective transformation.

Speaker A

We're going to come back with a closing prayer here in just a minute, but I want you to know that we have a special gift just for you.

Speaker A

Oh God, you are the source of boundless love.

Speaker A

Help us to embrace your light, not as harsh exposure, but as a loving illumination when we're tempted.

Speaker A

To make your love small, expand our hearts to match your cosmic vision.

Speaker A

When we want to condemn, remind us that you came to restore.

Speaker A

Give us courage to step into the light, to name hard truth to choose transformation over comfort.

Speaker A

So make your love flow through us until all of creation knows its worth.

Speaker A

Amen.

Speaker A
