I was at a barbecue the
EMMA:other day, sausages, salads,
EMMA:the usual chatter about work,
EMMA:holidays and footy, and I
EMMA:ended up sitting next to my
EMMA:mate who owns an IT business.
EMMA:He's one of those like
EMMA:cool, calm, collected tech
EMMA:guys and he works with big
EMMA:corporates and he works with
EMMA:medical practices and his
EMMA:work is so-called so cool.
EMMA:But he also looks after the
EMMA:systems for me and a few
EMMA:of my clients, and so he
EMMA:knows the work that I do.
EMMA:So I thought we're
EMMA:chatting about business,
EMMA:and he said to me, Hey,
EMMA:Emma, I know what you do.
EMMA:I know you're a
EMMA:business coach.
EMMA:I know you're amazing with
EMMA:women, all the things,
EMMA:"but I don't know which
EMMA:women you work with."
EMMA:I'm like, what?
EMMA:And I thought to myself,
EMMA:whoa, this is a problem.
EMMA:This is a problem because
EMMA:if someone doesn't actually
EMMA:know what I do and who
EMMA:I work with and how they
EMMA:can help, how on earth
EMMA:could I expect referrals?
EMMA:How on earth could I expect
EMMA:my name to be talked in
EMMA:spaces where I'm not around?
EMMA:Right?
EMMA:And that conversation sparks
EMMA:something big for me, and
EMMA:it might just for you too.
EMMA:And so today I wanna talk
EMMA:about why clarity matters.
EMMA:And how to make it easy
EMMA:for people to refer you,
EMMA:to recommend you and
EMMA:remember what you do
EMMA:and who you do it for.
EMMA:So we're going to unpack
EMMA:three simple things you can
EMMA:do right now to make sure
EMMA:that the world knows how
EMMA:to talk about your work.
EMMA:See, I just left
EMMA:that to chance.
EMMA:I just figured people see
EMMA:me on socials, I talk about
EMMA:it often enough, all the
EMMA:things, and that's not enough.
EMMA:So we're gonna
EMMA:dive straight in.
EMMA:We assume everyone gets it.
EMMA:I'm a business coach.
EMMA:What's not to get?
EMMA:I help women make money.
EMMA:What's not to get?
EMMA:Apparently.
EMMA:Quite a lot.
EMMA:We assume our family and
EMMA:our friends and our network
EMMA:have all connected the dots
EMMA:and that magically they're
EMMA:out there spruiking us.
EMMA:Mm, they're not, and
EMMA:they haven't connected
EMMA:the dots, so we have to
EMMA:do that bit for them.
EMMA:And it sucks.
EMMA:I know it sucks, ladies,
EMMA:but it is what it is, so
EMMA:we just have to do it.
EMMA:that conversation at the
EMMA:barbecue was my wake up call.
EMMA:I've been in business
EMMA:for almost nine years.
EMMA:Here was someone who
EMMA:knew me personally.
EMMA:They had referred
EMMA:clients to me.
EMMA:They totally understood
EMMA:what I did, and yet he
EMMA:didn't actually know
EMMA:who I worked with.
EMMA:And as we talked about it,
EMMA:uh, I said to him, well,
EMMA:I work with women who own
EMMA:service-based businesses.
EMMA:I don't do product-based
EMMA:businesses.
EMMA:I say I don't work with
EMMA:bricks and mortar, but
EMMA:that's actually not true.
EMMA:I work with a lot of
EMMA:bricks and mortar.
EMMA:They just still happen to be
EMMA:in service-based businesses.
EMMA:And as we were talking,
EMMA:I said, oh, I was telling
EMMA:him about one of my clients
EMMA:who's a physiotherapist,
EMMA:and he's like, I know
EMMA:that Physiotherapy center.
EMMA:I'm like, uh,
EMMA:that's my client.
EMMA:And he's like, oh, you
EMMA:do people like that?
EMMA:That's your client.
EMMA:I'm like, yes,
EMMA:that is my client.
EMMA:Oh my goodness.
EMMA:Oh my I think clarity
EMMA:creates the connection
EMMA:and then the connection
EMMA:creates the opportunity.
EMMA:the best way I can
EMMA:describe this, right?
EMMA:I want you to do me a favor
EMMA:because I did this myself.
EMMA:After this conversation, go
EMMA:and ask five people, just
EMMA:five friends, colleagues,
EMMA:past clients, family.
EMMA:Ask them to tell you in one
EMMA:sentence what they think you
EMMA:do and who you do it for.
EMMA:It will be mind
EMMA:boggling for you.
EMMA:If they can't describe it
EMMA:clearly, that's your sign
EMMA:that we need to sharpen
EMMA:the message, and you might
EMMA:be really surprised at
EMMA:how unclear it really is.
EMMA:Little story.
EMMA:We run Go-Getters days, three
EMMA:times a year in Melbourne,
EMMA:twice in Brizzy in 2026.
EMMA:They are amazing days.
EMMA:And at the end of the day,
EMMA:everyone gets to stand up
EMMA:with a little framework
EMMA:that I give them and tell us
EMMA:what they do, who they do it
EMMA:for, and how much it costs.
EMMA:There was 75 women in the
EMMA:room the last go-getters day.
EMMA:How many do you reckon
EMMA:stood up and did that?
EMMA:Less than half.
EMMA:There's an opportunity to
EMMA:stand in a room of other
EMMA:business owners and tell
EMMA:them who you do work for,
EMMA:why it matters, what it
EMMA:is, and how much it costs.
EMMA:And it dumbfounds me
EMMA:that only 50% of the
EMMA:room want to do that.
EMMA:I mean, I get it scary.
EMMA:You need to have courage
EMMA:and you need to like step
EMMA:outta your comfort zone.
EMMA:And the nerves are like,
EMMA:everyone's shaking.
EMMA:But the room is
EMMA:gloriously warm.
EMMA:You've spent all day with
EMMA:these people and unless people
EMMA:know what you're selling,
EMMA:how the heck can they buy?
EMMA:Unbelievable.
EMMA:I wanna talk about
EMMA:downplaying your work.
EMMA:Fast forward a couple of days
EMMA:after that barbecue and I
EMMA:was chatting to some family,
EMMA:they had come over and we
EMMA:were chatting about work.
EMMA:I always deflect.
EMMA:I didn't realize
EMMA:how much I deflect.
EMMA:I'm a business coach by trade.
EMMA:All I do is ask questions,
EMMA:solid questions,
EMMA:but I ask questions.
EMMA:If someone asks me a question,
EMMA:I ask a question straight
EMMA:back, very bad habit.
EMMA:And they said, so what's
EMMA:happening for you?
EMMA:I'm like, I don't know.
EMMA:Just a, you know,
EMMA:busy coaching this,
EMMA:coaching that thriving
EMMA:women, all the things.
EMMA:And this time I
EMMA:thought, no, Emma, no.
EMMA:You've just had that
EMMA:experience two days ago.
EMMA:You actually need to
EMMA:practice what you preach.
EMMA:Don't be a slow learner.
EMMA:So I told them what
EMMA:I actually did.
EMMA:I made it very simple
EMMA:because I left that barbecue
EMMA:riding that thing out,
EMMA:going right, we gotta
EMMA:get clear on this, right?
EMMA:And so I said to them, I'm
EMMA:a accredited business coach
EMMA:for women in
EMMA:service-based businesses.
EMMA:And I've got a few spots
EMMA:open for one-on-one coaching.
EMMA:That was it.
EMMA:They asked a number of
EMMA:questions after that.
EMMA:We unpacked it.
EMMA:It was simple, it was
EMMA:clear, and it was direct.
EMMA:I didn't take up 10
EMMA:minutes espousing all
EMMA:the bits and pieces.
EMMA:It was super simple
EMMA:and super clear.
EMMA:You know what happened next?
EMMA:Oh, you should
EMMA:talk to my friend.
EMMA:They've just stepped
EMMA:into this space.
EMMA:I'm like, oh my goodness.
EMMA:It was like a little
EMMA:nudge from the universe.
EMMA:Sometimes, ladies,
EMMA:I'm not that bright.
EMMA:Sometimes it takes a bit for
EMMA:me to learn things as well.
EMMA:But if I'm not talking about
EMMA:my work and you are not
EMMA:talking about your work, how
EMMA:can we expect anyone else to.
EMMA:I also wanna say at this
EMMA:point, I come from hr,
EMMA:HR background, and what
EMMA:I see over and over again
EMMA:is brilliant women with
EMMA:brilliant technical ability
EMMA:and they're like, the work
EMMA:will speak for itself.
EMMA:No, the work doesn't speak
EMMA:for itself, especially if
EMMA:you've got your own business.
EMMA:Stop being the technical
EMMA:expert and start talking
EMMA:about the work that
EMMA:you are actually doing.
EMMA:That is the way you get
EMMA:well-known and better
EMMA:positioned and funnily
EMMA:enough, get more clients.
EMMA:So let's do that, shall we?
EMMA:Your step, your next
EMMA:step is that next time
EMMA:someone asks you what
EMMA:you do, don't deflect.
EMMA:I mean, you've gotta do
EMMA:some practice on this.
EMMA:You've gotta jot it down.
EMMA:You've gotta know
EMMA:what you're gonna say.
EMMA:But it's like when you go
EMMA:to a barbecue and someone
EMMA:says, what do you do?
EMMA:And you've got like that much
EMMA:time to go, I'm a business
EMMA:coach, I work with women
EMMA:service-based businesses.
EMMA:What do you do?
EMMA:That's it.
EMMA:Right?
EMMA:And you've gotta
EMMA:get good at that.
EMMA:We've got to get good at
EMMA:telling people what we do.
EMMA:And you need to
EMMA:practice it out loud.
EMMA:I've said this
EMMA:again and again.
EMMA:The tongue has memory so every
EMMA:time you say something, you
EMMA:trip over yourself and it
EMMA:sorts it out, and then you
EMMA:sound better the next time.
EMMA:Don't not say it.
EMMA:Don't just do that.
EMMA:I'm practicing in my
EMMA:head and then when it
EMMA:comes out, you go, Hmm.
EMMA:Should have said
EMMA:that out loud.
EMMA:Sounded so much
EMMA:better in my head.
EMMA:No.
EMMA:So practice saying it
EMMA:clearly and proudly.
EMMA:No fluff, no apology.
EMMA:Something like I help insert
EMMA:audience to insert result you
EMMA:deliver That's one sentence.
EMMA:One sentence.
EMMA:That's all you need.
EMMA:For me, it's, I help women
EMMA:in service-based businesses
EMMA:grow their revenue,
EMMA:profit and confidence.
EMMA:And then if someone
EMMA:asks more things, great.
EMMA:That's it.
EMMA:You don't need a pitch,
EMMA:you just need clarity.
EMMA:We don't work hard
EMMA:enough on clarity.
EMMA:After those two conversations,
EMMA:and I got my butt
EMMA:kicked twice, I thought,
EMMA:right, this is on me.
EMMA:This is on me.
EMMA:Right?
EMMA:Kind of like following up
EMMA:in the sales process, I
EMMA:hear lots of women say,
EMMA:oh, I sent a proposal, but
EMMA:I didn't hear anything.
EMMA:Did you follow up?
EMMA:Did you actually do the
EMMA:things that as a business
EMMA:owner, we need to do?
EMMA:Right.
EMMA:So if people don't know
EMMA:how to talk about my work,
EMMA:it's because I haven't
EMMA:given them the words.
EMMA:So I came home, I crafted
EMMA:a paragraph, told them
EMMA:exactly what I did in three
EMMA:sentences, who I help, how I
EMMA:help them, how I get results.
EMMA:Then I sent a few people,
EMMA:some business contacts, a
EMMA:few friends, and just said,
EMMA:Hey, if you ever come across
EMMA:anyone who needs a business
EMMA:coach, one, here's my bio and
EMMA:here's quick snapshot of what
EMMA:I do and how I help Bing.
EMMA:I hate it when my
EMMA:experiments will work.
EMMA:I really hate it.
EMMA:Within a week, I
EMMA:had two referrals.
EMMA:That is how it works.
EMMA:People just knew what I did
EMMA:and they wanted to help me.
EMMA:I wanna just pop in one more
EMMA:story here because I think
EMMA:this is really relevant.
EMMA:I've been seeing the same
EMMA:hairdresser for 25 years.
EMMA:It's a long time, isn't it?
EMMA:and if you're not watching
EMMA:this or if you're watching
EMMA:me, you'll see that
EMMA:I've got blonde hair.
EMMA:If you're not watching
EMMA:blonde hair takes a bit, a
EMMA:little bit of maintenance.
EMMA:So I see her four times
EMMA:a year and every time
EMMA:we talk about business,
EMMA:because she loves what I
EMMA:do, I love what she does.
EMMA:She's got some nieces who
EMMA:own product-based businesses
EMMA:and all the things.
EMMA:And in my most recent
EMMA:appointment with
EMMA:her, she said, Emma.
EMMA:I think you could
EMMA:help my nieces.
EMMA:Now I hear this a bit.
EMMA:I hear this a bit, right?
EMMA:And I'm like, what
EMMA:do, let's talk about
EMMA:what your nieces do.
EMMA:Oh my golly.
EMMA:Her nieces own two
EMMA:product-based businesses
EMMA:that are currently in
EMMA:Coles and Woolworths.
EMMA:They're not small businesses,
EMMA:and I said, I would love to
EMMA:help them then and there,
EMMA:she pulled her phone out,
EMMA:stopped doing my hair, pulled
EMMA:her phone out and said, I'm
EMMA:just gonna send them a text
EMMA:message with your details
EMMA:and your Instagram handle.
EMMA:Is that okay?
EMMA:Is that okay?
EMMA:Knock yourself out.
EMMA:Right?
EMMA:That is how it works.
EMMA:We've been in business,
EMMA:we've been in relationship
EMMA:together for years.
EMMA:She knows what I do.
EMMA:She watches what I do because
EMMA:I work when I go there and
EMMA:she's like, yeah, I reckon
EMMA:you could help this person.
EMMA:And then after that she
EMMA:went, you know what?
EMMA:I know this, this
EMMA:psychiatrist, and there's
EMMA:this psychologist and
EMMA:there's this person.
EMMA:Emma, I have a
EMMA:lot of contacts.
EMMA:I'm like, I know you do.
EMMA:And she's like, would you
EMMA:mind if I shared your details?
EMMA:I'm like, I would
EMMA:not mind at all.
EMMA:In fact, knock yourself out.
EMMA:Do you want me to
EMMA:write you an email?
EMMA:And she's like, yes, please.
EMMA:Wrote her an email off.
EMMA:She went, happy as Larry
EMMA:did not expect that.
EMMA:But there you go.
EMMA:People want to help.
EMMA:Oh my goodness.
EMMA:They so wanna help.
EMMA:But they can't help you if you
EMMA:don't give them the language.
EMMA:So your next step is to
EMMA:write a short paragraph.
EMMA:That answers three questions.
EMMA:What do you do?
EMMA:What do you do for people?
EMMA:Who do you do it for
EMMA:What result do they get?
EMMA:Then share it.
EMMA:That's the scary bit.
EMMA:Hey, I reckon, I
EMMA:reckon everyone's like,
EMMA:yeah, I've got this.
EMMA:I've got this.
EMMA:Da, da.
EMMA:And then share.
EMMA:Who am I sharing it to?
EMMA:Your network, your clients,
EMMA:your family, your colleagues.
EMMA:Dog doesn't matter.
EMMA:It's not showing off.
EMMA:It's setting people up
EMMA:to connect you to the
EMMA:right opportunities.
EMMA:So here's what I learned
EMMA:from a barbecue and
EMMA:some family chats.
EMMA:Don't assume that people
EMMA:know what you do, even
EMMA:the ones closest to you.
EMMA:Don't downplay your work.
EMMA:You need to own the work, and
EMMA:you need to own the result.
EMMA:I'm a results based
EMMA:business coach.
EMMA:If you don't want results,
EMMA:we won't work together.
EMMA:It's really simple and you
EMMA:need to make it ridiculously
EMMA:easy for people to refer you.
EMMA:Clarity isn't
EMMA:about being clever.
EMMA:It's about being remembered
EMMA:and when people know exactly
EMMA:what you do, they can't
EMMA:help but talk about you.
EMMA:Also, it helps to give
EMMA:them a good experience,
EMMA:so don't be a knob.
EMMA:There's that.
EMMA:And just.
EMMA:That pitch or that paragraph
EMMA:or those three questions,
EMMA:I want you to think about
EMMA:the clients that you love
EMMA:working with, the premium
EMMA:clients that you love
EMMA:working with, and maybe you
EMMA:don't have enough of those.
EMMA:That's what your pitch,
EMMA:that's what your paragraph
EMMA:needs to be aimed towards.
EMMA:Because as we evolve in
EMMA:business, sometimes we create
EMMA:different offers for different
EMMA:audiences, and that's okay.
EMMA:But we really, what we
EMMA:know is that as we improve.
EMMA:Our expectations improve,
EMMA:our audience improves.
EMMA:Our ideal client
EMMA:improves all the things.
EMMA:So make sure that your
EMMA:pitch is pitched to where
EMMA:you want it to go in the
EMMA:future, not the person that
EMMA:you were five years ago.
EMMA:If this episode has made
