Speaker A

Welcome to Barbecue Nation with JT's After Hours conversation that took place after the broadcast ended.

Speaker A

Hey, everybody, it's jt.

Speaker A

And this is a special version of Barbecue Nation.

Speaker A

It is brought to you in part by Painted Hills Natural Beef, Beef you can be proud to serve your family and friends.

Speaker A

That's Painted Hills Natural Beef.

Speaker A

Hey, everybody.

Speaker A

Welcome to after hours here on Barbecue Nation.

Speaker A

I'm JT along with Ms. Leanne Whippen.

Speaker A

And today we've got Danny Wentworth.

Speaker A

Is our vic.

Speaker A

Our guest, not our victim from Bullenboar Barbecue Shop in.

Speaker A

Right across the street from Daytona.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

David, David, if.

Speaker A

I know you're going to listen to this because you have to listen to every show when you do the editing, but just remain calm, David.

Speaker A

Just remain calm.

Speaker A

So, Danny, this is the part of the show where we.

Speaker A

We test your.

Speaker A

Not your barbecue knowledge, but your.

Speaker A

How do I say, your.

Speaker A

Test your metal on different things in life.

Speaker A

How's that?

Speaker A

You ready?

Speaker B

Let's do it.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker B

I have no choice.

Speaker A

Yeah, no choice.

Speaker A

I'll give you a couple easy ones first.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

This.

Speaker A

These are always kind of fun.

Speaker A

If you could cook for than dine with a historical figure, who would it be and what would the menu be?

Speaker B

Oh, boy, that's a good one.

Speaker B

Historical figure.

Speaker C

It does stump a lot of people, I will say.

Speaker B

Yeah, I mean, I thought we were starting with the easy ones here.

Speaker C

I know.

Speaker C

I was kind of surprised that you considered that one easy.

Speaker B

I mean, alive or dead.

Speaker A

Yeah, yeah, we'll dig.

Speaker A

We'll dig them up if you.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker B

Oh, that's fine.

Speaker B

That's fine.

Speaker B

So, well, let's just stick with the theme of our.

Speaker B

Our shop and being across the street, which maybe this will help with that partnership that I was talking about earlier.

Speaker B

Jimmy Johnson would be great because, you know, he hangs out right across the street from us when he's one in Daytona.

Speaker B

Five hundreds or Mr. Richard Petty, I think would be fun to cook with.

Speaker A

Sure.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

And then.

Speaker B

And then menu wise, I don't know, probably keep it simple because you can't really mess up pulled pork.

Speaker B

So I don't want.

Speaker B

I don't want them to think that I'm an idiot.

Speaker B

So you're not.

Speaker B

Yeah, probably.

Speaker B

Probably pulled pork.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker B

I'm more of a pork guy than I am a.

Speaker B

A brisket guy.

Speaker B

I. I'm not gonna lie to you.

Speaker B

Still kicks my butt.

Speaker A

Oh, pork's.

Speaker A

I think pork's much easier.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Probably why I'm good at it.

Speaker A

To cook it.

Speaker A

I mean, brisket's fun and all that.

Speaker A

But.

Speaker A

And it takes some skills to do a brisket properly.

Speaker A

Anyway, you're in the barbecue retail business.

Speaker A

What's the hottest new thing you have seen to help people cook?

Speaker B

Pellet girls.

Speaker B

I mean, they pretty much foolproofed it, right?

Speaker B

Um, yeah.

Speaker B

I mean, honestly, that's.

Speaker B

That's.

Speaker B

We.

Speaker B

We go through pellet smokers, obviously, much faster than the.

Speaker B

The primos or the case.

Speaker B

Just because people literally can now sit at their house and use or at their.

Speaker B

Their work with their phone and.

Speaker B

And cook their food.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

I have to explain to people that you have to get the food in the grill.

Speaker B

We've had to have that conversation.

Speaker B

Well, how does the food get in there if the grill does it through the phone?

Speaker B

Well, you still got to get the food in there, ma'.

Speaker B

Am.

Speaker B

It's pretty much set it.

Speaker A

You got to take the wrapper off.

Speaker C

You got to go to the store and buy it.

Speaker B

Exactly.

Speaker B

Star Trek.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

It's not a Replicator.

Speaker B

It's not going to just, you know, some of the questions we get are just.

Speaker B

They're classic.

Speaker C

That is.

Speaker A

Oh, yeah, that's good.

Speaker A

Now, if you could work with.

Speaker B

One.

Speaker A

Of your barbecue heroes.

Speaker A

You can't say Leanne, because that's cheating.

Speaker A

She's on the show.

Speaker A

But if you could work with one of your barbecue heroes, who would it be?

Speaker B

So, okay.

Speaker B

Myron was cool, and he's coming back.

Speaker B

Super nice guy, but Tuffy is on my list.

Speaker B

I definitely want to try and get toughie to the shop just because he's just, I don't know, very laid back and quiet.

Speaker B

Sort of like me, it seems like.

Speaker B

And, you know, I just.

Speaker B

He's.

Speaker C

And full of knowledge.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker C

Gentlemen, too.

Speaker B

Yeah, he's just.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

To me, he.

Speaker B

He's like, obviously, I'm not gonna offend anybody, but I don't mean he's a backyard guy, but to me, he seems like, you know, the kind of guy that you could cook next door to.

Speaker A

Oh, sure.

Speaker C

He's like a friend.

Speaker B

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Somebody you can totally relate to.

Speaker B

And.

Speaker C

And I agree.

Speaker C

And you can get his rub at his shop, too.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

And we also had his rub.

Speaker A

Okay, well, I was going to tell you the story about Tuffy being a Marine, but I'll just let that go right now.

Speaker A

So, Danny, if you could erase one mistake from your past, what would that mistake be and why?

Speaker B

Jumping into a location that you didn't really think things through too quick.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Honestly, it just.

Speaker B

Again, we've learned so much and year that if we could go back in time, we would probably definitely know what to look for and.

Speaker B

And know what we wanted to do, you know, in a bigger picture, as we just started with the ribs and, like I said, rubs and sauces.

Speaker B

Now, you know, we want the classroom, we want the meat, we want, you.

Speaker C

Know, the beer and wine.

Speaker B

Yeah, right, exactly.

Speaker A

Well, that.

Speaker A

Those are all great, great things to achieve.

Speaker A

Just takes a little time is all.

Speaker B

And a little money.

Speaker A

And a little money.

Speaker A

That's the.

Speaker A

That's the pesky part, is getting that.

Speaker B

Money in there because everybody wants to be paid.

Speaker A

God, I don't understand it.

Speaker A

If you.

Speaker A

If Leanne declared you supreme ruler of barbecue for a week, what would you, as supreme ruler, declare or decree made him think on that one?

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

I know that hamburgers and hot dogs are not barbecue.

Speaker B

And don't ask a barbecue shop to come out and cook hamburgers and hot dogs on a gas grill.

Speaker B

So no more gas grills.

Speaker A

I. I think that's probably one of the most honest answers we've got on that.

Speaker C

I agree with you.

Speaker B

And that's just based off recent experiences.

Speaker A

I got it.

Speaker A

But you know that they sell more gas grills than anything in this, and.

Speaker B

That'S why we brought in.

Speaker B

I think it's 62 or 63% of the market is still gas grills.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

So nothing wrong with it.

Speaker C

Well, you know why?

Speaker C

I'll tell you why.

Speaker C

Because a lot of people live in apartments and you can have a gas grill, but you can't have a charcoal grill.

Speaker B

Right?

Speaker B

No.

Speaker B

Open.

Speaker C

I think that's the reason.

Speaker B

And don't get me wrong, I mean, I love gas grills.

Speaker B

It's just when, you know, a barbecue shop is sought out to cook barbecue for an event, and they show up and they're like, here's our gas grill.

Speaker B

Hamburgers and hot dogs.

Speaker B

It's like, man, yeah.

Speaker A

Oh, yeah.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

And I've been there, done that.

Speaker A

If we put Danny Wentworth skills to music, what would the music be?

Speaker B

Oh, Metallica.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Because it's just going to be a hot mess, and we're gonna.

Speaker B

We're gonna pound through it.

Speaker A

So there you go.

Speaker A

If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?

Speaker B

Oh, that's a good one, too.

Speaker B

I could be, like, really cool and say I'd be like a bull or a boar, but I'm not.

Speaker B

I'm probably just going to be just that dog that loves to be that big lab that just loves to be, you know, petted, going, and just goes.

Speaker C

With the flow bed and can take naps.

Speaker A

Absolutely.

Speaker A

What is your favorite and then your least favorite food to cook?

Speaker B

My favorite, probably ribs.

Speaker B

It's the one thing that I've.

Speaker B

I've managed to accidentally.

Speaker B

I'm not going to say perfect with the company I'm in, but I've gotten pretty darn good at ribs.

Speaker B

Least favorite is still brisket, even after having Myron 15ft from me for three hours teach me how to do it.

Speaker B

So for some reason, I just.

Speaker B

It.

Speaker B

I had that mental block when it comes to brisket.

Speaker C

It's aggravating.

Speaker A

Yeah, it is.

Speaker A

Have you ever eaten haggis?

Speaker B

No.

Speaker B

No.

Speaker B

I know it is for you.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker A

Dire Straits, AC DC or Billy Ray Cyrus.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker B

I. I'm Dire Straits.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker A

Attaboy.

Speaker A

What would be your last meal if you were on death row?

Speaker B

You know what?

Speaker B

The funniest thing just popped up in my mind was macaroni and cheese with bacon, so I'm just gonna go with that.

Speaker C

Comfort food.

Speaker A

Yes.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Why is that?

Speaker A

They only give you a 40 doll on those deals, so.

Speaker C

I didn't know that.

Speaker A

Blue box, blue box.

Speaker A

There you go.

Speaker A

You have a favorite movie.

Speaker A

Danny.

Speaker B

Rudy.

Speaker A

Really?

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker B

Born and raised Notre Dame fan.

Speaker B

And that's.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker A

The Fighting Irish.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much barbecue do you and your family eat on a regular basis?

Speaker B

11.

Speaker B

So I mean, we're just always, always.

Speaker B

I mean, like I said, we have one of everything that we have at the shop, so I'm always constantly cooking on it just to perfect it and learn how to use it.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker B

Things.

Speaker A

What does a.

Speaker A

What is a fantasy day for Danny Wentworth look like?

Speaker B

Oh, maybe just a good day off.

Speaker A

With the phone, I would say.

Speaker B

Sitting at home, floating in the pool and watching our clover.

Speaker B

Just keep telling me that we have sale after sale, you know, or that.

Speaker B

Or just, I don't know, having a Leanne or again, another somebody like that at our shop.

Speaker B

Our little shop, you know, that's 900 square feet.

Speaker B

And just, you know, knowing that having them know that we exist.

Speaker A

You know that they started Amazon in Jeff Bezos garage.

Speaker A

Right.

Speaker A

So.

Speaker A

And that was less than 900 square feet.

Speaker B

Yeah.

Speaker B

I mean, look at Steve or.

Speaker B

Geez, the Apple guy.

Speaker A

Oh, Jobs.

Speaker B

Steve Jobs.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker B

Thank you.

Speaker B

They started in this garage.

Speaker B

I want to say he was there.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

Do you remember the first thing you ever barbecued, grilled, or smoked?

Speaker B

It was burgers with my dad.

Speaker B

And my mom, to this day will tell you that my dad still could not cook hamburgers because it always came out as hockey pucks.

Speaker B

So she's like, please don't teach him how to cook on the grill.

Speaker B

He was more of a well done kind of guy.

Speaker A

I get it.

Speaker A

I get it.

Speaker A

My dad was the same way.

Speaker A

Shoe leather or better was kind of his.

Speaker B

His deal there.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Speaker A

His motto, dad, it's already dead.

Speaker B

You don't have to kill it the second time, buddy.

Speaker A

That's good.

Speaker A

That's good.

Speaker A

Okay, if you could make this your last question.

Speaker A

If you could make any changes to the world of barbecue.

Speaker A

It was kind of like your supreme ruler thing, but this is more of a big picture deal.

Speaker A

If you can make any changes, what would you suggest?

Speaker B

Okay, so coming from a backyard guy and dealing with some of these pro teams setting up the barbecue showdown, just check your ego at the door, please.

Speaker B

You know, it's just.

Speaker B

I.

Speaker B

It's just amazing that these.

Speaker B

The entitlement maybe, you know, per se, on some of these people that just think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Speaker A

I get it.

Speaker B

And just.

Speaker B

Just enjoy.

Speaker B

I don't know.

Speaker B

Enjoy it.

Speaker B

I mean, I understand you're competing and it's for money and all that good stuff, but to me, it's just.

Speaker B

It's like they take the fun out of it and.

Speaker B

And just, you know, we're trying to do a fun cook event, and I. I have to argue with people about.

Speaker B

We're trying to give you meat for free.

Speaker B

We're trying to give you all the fuel for free, and you still have a problem with everything.

Speaker B

So, you know.

Speaker A

Yep, I get it.

Speaker C

Well, I'm not invited.

Speaker C

You're not.

Speaker B

Exactly.

Speaker B

And I told him that.

Speaker B

I'm like, this is not the cook for you, so.

Speaker A

So I'll pay for your mate.

Speaker B

Exactly.

Speaker A

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker B

You're one year to get everything for free.

Speaker B

Next year you're bringing your own stuff anyway, so.

Speaker A

So I lied to you.

Speaker A

There's two more questions here.

Speaker A

Would you describe yourself as corn fed or grass fed?

Speaker B

Corn fed.

Speaker A

I like that.

Speaker A

And boxers or briefs?

Speaker B

Boxers.

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker A

I think he passed Leanne.

Speaker C

I really do find colors.

Speaker A

Danny Wentworth from Bull and Boar barbecue shop in Daytona Beach.

Speaker A

Good luck in the next couple weeks with everything.

Speaker A

And good luck in the fall with the big races coming to town.

Speaker A

Good luck with Ms. Leanne there when she's over there haranguing you.

Speaker C

So, yeah, so it's coming up April 20th, is it?

Speaker C

27th through the 29th.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker B

Yeah, it's next.

Speaker B

Yes.

Speaker C

I get to celebrate my birthday there.

Speaker B

Oh, awesome.

Speaker B

Oh, boy.

Speaker B

All right.

Speaker C

Oh, boy, oh, boy.

Speaker B

Charlie, know that you're just.

Speaker A

Are they gonna put you on a pace car?

Speaker C

I'm gonna jump out of a cake that was cooked on a smoker.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker B

All right.

Speaker A

Danny Wentworth, thank you, buddy.

Speaker A

I appreciate it.

Speaker A

We will send you the links to this.

Speaker A

Well, that's going to wrap it up for Danny's trial by fire, so to speak, here on Barbecue Nation after hours.

Speaker A

We will be back next week with another show.

Speaker A

I'm not quite sure who it is because we're kind of in flux between some guests saying yes, no, and then, you know, get out of my face.

Speaker A

Deal.

Speaker A

But anyway, we will be back again.

Speaker A

Thank you, Danny.

Speaker A

Thank you, Leanne.

Speaker A

Thank you, everybody, for listening.

Speaker A

Take care.

Speaker A

Remember our motto, turn it, don't burn it.

Speaker A

Be good.
