Speaker:

we're gonna look at how to pitch your website as a website

Speaker:

designer or a developer.

Speaker:

Two people

Speaker:

who are actually gonna buy from you

Speaker:

Do you ever do that thing where you go and look at another website designers, or

Speaker:

particularly developer's website, and you go there and you can't actually find out

Speaker:

anything about the designer or developer.

Speaker:

You can't find out what they look like.

Speaker:

You can't really find out much

Speaker:

about them.

Speaker:

You don't even know their prices.

Speaker:

The only thing

Speaker:

that you can kind of see are these images of code on a screen or some developers

Speaker:

will do this code that

Speaker:

can interact with and it might seem really clever,

Speaker:

but it's just weird.

Speaker:

.So hi, and welcome to Websites Made

Speaker:

Simple.

Speaker:

I am Holly Christie.

Speaker:

I'm a website designer.

Speaker:

I'm a mentor to website designers,

Speaker:

and I have this podcast to help

Speaker:

have an

Speaker:

amazing web design

Speaker:

career without making all the mistakes I did along the way.

Speaker:

So,

Speaker:

Ready?

Speaker:

Let's get started.

Speaker:

So, yeah, have a hard time representing ourselves online, don't we?

Speaker:

we?

Speaker:

And a lot of that can be because

Speaker:

website designers can often want to be all things to all people.

Speaker:

It

Speaker:

is a really saturated industry.

Speaker:

In

Speaker:

I've been looking

Speaker:

some of the figures in the UK of, you know,

Speaker:

How many web designers there are,

Speaker:

how many website designers there are in certain price

Speaker:

brackets and what they're earning

Speaker:

and stuff

Speaker:

like that.

Speaker:

And if you are

Speaker:

finding that,

Speaker:

it is tough to

Speaker:

stand out and cut through that noise and have people choose you is because

Speaker:

it is.

Speaker:

But I am here

Speaker:

to help you, give you some

Speaker:

hints, some tips, some tricks

Speaker:

really get in front of your audience.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

the first thing that

Speaker:

are going to talk about is

Speaker:

anonymity.

Speaker:

Because so many website designers and developers make the mistake

Speaker:

of thinking

Speaker:

that what they are offering

Speaker:

to the client

Speaker:

is all about

Speaker:

the end result.

Speaker:

And of

Speaker:

we want our clients to love the websites we build.

Speaker:

We want them to have a really good experience working with us,

Speaker:

and we want them to really, you know, be championing us along

Speaker:

the way and be like,

Speaker:

oh yeah.

Speaker:

Business friends, you need a new website.

Speaker:

I have the designer for you.

Speaker:

Now, trust me,

Speaker:

if

Speaker:

they land on your website and they can't find a picture of you, they

Speaker:

don't really know much about you.

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

They can just see this really

Speaker:

anonymous website that uses stock photography of

Speaker:

what websites

Speaker:

look like on a

Speaker:

phone and

Speaker:

tablet and a desktop, but there's nothing about you in there.

Speaker:

They're not gonna buy it, I promise you.

Speaker:

They're not gonna buy from that.

Speaker:

The ones that they are gonna buy from are gonna be the website

Speaker:

designers who have photos of them.

Speaker:

who talk directly to them and who allow their clients into

Speaker:

their lives a little bit.

Speaker:

And that's not to say, oh, you've gotta write about your.

Speaker:

your family situation or where you went on holiday, or anything like that.

Speaker:

It's not, you know,

Speaker:

I'm all about business

Speaker:

things on business

Speaker:

sites, You need to

Speaker:

have your values on there.

Speaker:

What

Speaker:

kind of drives

Speaker:

you?

Speaker:

you know, what really drives me with this podcast and with working and creating

Speaker:

resources and everything for you is that

Speaker:

I think the web design's

Speaker:

a really great career.

Speaker:

You get

Speaker:

be creative.

Speaker:

You

Speaker:

get to work

Speaker:

for yourself.

Speaker:

You get to meet loads of other people in the

Speaker:

industry.

Speaker:

There's always something fresh and new, and

Speaker:

you

Speaker:

to be really good at what you do as well.

Speaker:

there's

Speaker:

really great stuff about it, but

Speaker:

So many website

Speaker:

designers burn out

Speaker:

and trust me, I've been one of

Speaker:

the burnt out ones.

Speaker:

So many of us burn

Speaker:

out because they dunno how to run the business.

Speaker:

they've just pieced it all together as they've gone along

Speaker:

and they feel like they're, you know, at the end of this really

Speaker:

rapidly fraying route.

Speaker:

And we all hit that point in our businesses.

Speaker:

My purpose of

Speaker:

this for you guys.

Speaker:

is so that you don't reach that burnout.

Speaker:

So you carry on loving the career

Speaker:

in the industry the way that I do,

Speaker:

do, and so that you are properly resourced so that when a

Speaker:

client comes and says to you,

Speaker:

oh, you haven't done this properly, and say, actually I have, I've stuck

Speaker:

to my contract.

Speaker:

This is what's in the contract.

Speaker:

If you

Speaker:

don't have contracts, I have a, uh, website designers contract pack on

Speaker:

the websites made simple co uk and you can go and grab them from there.

Speaker:

having, being able

Speaker:

to help you guys to have an amazing career is really what

Speaker:

drives me.

Speaker:

And I make that really

Speaker:

clear throughout my whole website

Speaker:

and it works

Speaker:

because, you know, I have people buying my contracts.

Speaker:

I have people buying my courses, I have people in mentoring sessions.

Speaker:

I have people working one-to-one with me

Speaker:

People want that, they want that support.

Speaker:

And in the same way that when people are coming to look at your website, they're

Speaker:

doing so because they want a website and they want it with a web designer who

Speaker:

can build a good relationship with

Speaker:

a web

Speaker:

designer who can support them in achieving this online goal for them.

Speaker:

they aren't going

Speaker:

to really be able to get that if they can't see who that designer is.

Speaker:

have a look at your website and think about people buy from people.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

if

Speaker:

is not enough of you on your website, then go and fix that

Speaker:

and put more of you on your site.

Speaker:

and an ity just doesn't connect with your audience, you know, a load of code.

Speaker:

I've

Speaker:

seen some coders websites and it

Speaker:

kind of looks

Speaker:

what they do.

Speaker:

You

Speaker:

go onto the website and they have it all like

Speaker:

you know, the black box and the code writing as you are

Speaker:

looking

Speaker:

at it And yeah, I can look

Speaker:

at that and I can appreciate that.

Speaker:

And yeah, they, yeah, that looks fun.

Speaker:

But someone

Speaker:

who is looking to get their website built or designed,

Speaker:

they're not gonna find that fun.

Speaker:

They're gonna find that really intimidating because the years

Speaker:

and years that I have been.

Speaker:

building and

Speaker:

working in website design.

Speaker:

The one thing that has connected a lot of the people that I have built websites

Speaker:

for, I would say probably 90% of the people that I've built websites for,

Speaker:

is.

Speaker:

They're actually quite afraid

Speaker:

of the tech.

Speaker:

websites can make people feel quite stupid and they're not stupid at all.

Speaker:

It's

Speaker:

just they're not meant to

Speaker:

know this tech for years, people didn't really have websites or

Speaker:

didn't need to worry about it or think about it, or the

Speaker:

website may have been handled by

Speaker:

company that they were working

Speaker:

for at the times.

Speaker:

Yeah, this is all new software and it's all new stuff and

Speaker:

people aren't gonna know it.

Speaker:

And if they're just hit by a wall of code or a wall of

Speaker:

images or something like that,

Speaker:

it's

Speaker:

gonna make them feel like, oh, I'm gonna be looked after here, or This is

Speaker:

someone who's gonna understand where I'm

Speaker:

from or whatever else it is.

Speaker:

And trust me, people do feel like this.

Speaker:

Like I have my Simply Sites is you probably know, they are my starter

Speaker:

websites for people who are only looking for something very small

Speaker:

or they're on the start of their journey I'm known for my handholding,

Speaker:

and

Speaker:

so I would've handheld them through the process.

Speaker:

They get their website manual at the end

Speaker:

of the experience as well.

Speaker:

Everything is all good and I always say to them,

Speaker:

you wanna add another page, if you want to do something, just jump

Speaker:

on a call with me and you know, I will happily walk you through it.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

sometimes my lovely virtual assistant, Sharon,

Speaker:

she will go on

Speaker:

the call with the people.

Speaker:

I can't tell you how many times people say.

Speaker:

Oh, I'm so

Speaker:

pleased it's you, Sharon, and I just feel intimidated like,

Speaker:

asking the web designer to

Speaker:

actually be the one to do this . and these are people who

Speaker:

I've worked with for years and

Speaker:

I'm always saying

Speaker:

to them, I mean, they come to me.

Speaker:

So just because.

Speaker:

someone may have, you know, engaged at one point, people still feel intimidated.

Speaker:

Often when it comes to websites and website tech.

Speaker:

And so your job within getting new clients is to make them feel really comfortable.

Speaker:

And the way that we make people feel comfortable, the way we make

Speaker:

them feel aspirational

Speaker:

as well, is

Speaker:

by showing them who we are, what we can do, what our

Speaker:

values are, but really

Speaker:

coming across in that user friendly way as well.

Speaker:

as I'm saying this, I'm racking my brains now and say, well, if

Speaker:

you are the type of web designer who does this or that, but no.

Speaker:

If

Speaker:

you are trying to connect directly with people who want websites built for them,

Speaker:

then there aren't any exceptions to

Speaker:

this.

Speaker:

Be brave.

Speaker:

Put yourself out there.

Speaker:

there

Speaker:

And do not anonymize yourself on your website because

Speaker:

if anything, I mean, even

Speaker:

coders have to have websites which have a good website user journey.

Speaker:

people need pricing on websites.

Speaker:

I've got a whole podcast episode on this about pricing.

Speaker:

People need to see how much he costs, and I know that

Speaker:

People can often

Speaker:

and I actually think it's quite an old fashioned thing now,

Speaker:

but people

Speaker:

can often think, oh, well, what if my competitors see what I'm

Speaker:

charging and then they go and undercut me or something like that.

Speaker:

it just doesn't really

Speaker:

happen like that, especially because it is a saturated industry.

Speaker:

People will know

Speaker:

generally

Speaker:

how much they want to spend on a website build,

Speaker:

people will pay to work with the people they want to work with.

Speaker:

even if it means paying.

Speaker:

more.

Speaker:

And the reason

Speaker:

that they will pay more to work with that person is because they have gotta know

Speaker:

them and whether they've gotta know them through their website, whether they've

Speaker:

gotta know them through social channels

Speaker:

they followed them for a while.

Speaker:

Whatever

Speaker:

it is.

Speaker:

It's them

Speaker:

that they are trying to buy from.

Speaker:

It's like, if you see through my testimonials and things

Speaker:

like that with people who.

Speaker:

Have

Speaker:

website bills, they say I

Speaker:

a new website and Holly was the only person I wanted to work with.

Speaker:

I mean, you'll see with my websites, I'm really accessible to people

Speaker:

and it's very consistent with my social media feeds as well.

Speaker:

As much as your website needs to be your, like

Speaker:

shiniest, best version of you.

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

It doesn't

Speaker:

have to be stayed, it doesn't have to be, here is a corporate

Speaker:

photo of me, or, you know, here is me in a suit jacket or whatever.

Speaker:

I mean, you can say on my website, I'm not wearing suits in any of them.

Speaker:

I spend most of my time in jeans and shirts and stuff like that.

Speaker:

to

Speaker:

to.

Speaker:

build trust.

Speaker:

It has to be well lit. It can't be images of you that have just been

Speaker:

cropped out of photos from your friend's wedding or on the holiday or

Speaker:

family picture or something like that.

Speaker:

You really do need to invest in your own website presence to get

Speaker:

people to invest in theirs with you.

Speaker:

if

Speaker:

if

Speaker:

you have your website currently anonymous, I would like to

Speaker:

challenge you to changing that.

Speaker:

I would like to challenge you

Speaker:

to looking at

Speaker:

how you

Speaker:

get some photos

Speaker:

of you that you'd be happy to have on the website.

Speaker:

and if it is.

Speaker:

Kind of anonymized by the website copy as well.

Speaker:

where it's

Speaker:

we build custom build websites for these people, da, da da, source of thing.

Speaker:

Really go through your website, have a look at it, see how

Speaker:

you can update the copy.

Speaker:

set it so that you are identifying

Speaker:

your client's needs without sounding like a robot.

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

have a course called Understanding Your User's Journey, and

Speaker:

it's all about UX design.

Speaker:

And it's a webinar which talks you through all the best practices

Speaker:

of UX design,

Speaker:

but

Speaker:

it also has a workbook with it, and it says, you know, what's

Speaker:

your client's pain point?

Speaker:

What's your story about how you sort that pain point?

Speaker:

And there's lots and lots of opportunities within these workbooks to really

Speaker:

nail your website design for clients.

Speaker:

It does work.

Speaker:

It's all of the practice I have done on my own websites, on my

Speaker:

client's websites, as you know.

Speaker:

know, I've won awards for the websites

Speaker:

I build.

Speaker:

So if you are struggling with this, then

Speaker:

please do go over to websites made simple.co uk.

Speaker:

Go and download the course.

Speaker:

It'll be one of the best investments that you have made.

Speaker:

So until then.

Speaker:

If

Speaker:

you do update your website, if

Speaker:

do think, oh, I'm gonna take it yeah, I'm gonna do what Hall says, do drop me

Speaker:

a line, come to Hello at websites, made simple co uk share your wins with me.

Speaker:

I would love to hear from you and until

Speaker:

then,

Speaker:

happy website.
