Welcome to Bible Bites, the podcast where we work to inspire faith one bite at a time.

Speaker 2 00:00:57

I'm your host, Randy Black.

Speaker 2 00:01:00

The story of Rachel reminds us that even in seasons of delay and disappointment or deep longing, God is listening

Speaker 2 00:01:12

Rachel, who had long struggled with infertility and watched her sister bear many children, finally experienced a breakthrough when God remembered her

Speaker 2 00:01:22

This episode is going to teach that our deepest desires, when surrendered to God, can become part of his redemptive story.

Speaker 2 00:01:33

Rachel's journey is not just about the birth of Joseph.

Speaker 2 00:01:37

It's a testimony to the faithfulness of God and a reminder that he cares deeply for the desires hidden in our hearts.

Speaker 2 00:01:47

Let's open up with a word of prayer.

Speaker 2 00:01:51

Heavenly Father, we thank you for being a God who hears, remembers, and responds

Speaker 2 00:01:57

As we study the story of Rachel and your faithfulness in her life, open our hearts to trust you with our own desires

Speaker 2 00:02:06

Teach us patience, strength of faith, and help us believe that your timing is perfect.

Speaker 2 00:02:13

Speak to us through your word today

Speaker 2 00:02:16

It's in the name of your son Jesus that we pray.

Speaker 2 00:02:20

Amen.

Speaker 2 00:02:23

Genesis 30, verse 22 begins with a powerful phrase.

Speaker 2 00:02:27

Then God remembered Rachel.

Speaker 2 00:02:31

This is not to say that God had forgotten her in the way that we forget things, but rather, he chose this moment to act on her behalf

Speaker 2 00:02:41

In the Old Testament, when God remembers someone, it often signifies divine action rooted in covenantal love and mercy.

Speaker 2 00:02:51

Rachel, who had endured years of longing and disappointment while watching her sister Leah bear multiple children, now finds herself at the center of God's redemptive attention

Speaker 2 00:03:01

This reminder shows us that no pain or prayer is ever wasted in the eyes of God.

Speaker 2 00:03:09

He moves at the perfect time.

Speaker 2 00:03:13

The verse continues, and God listened to her and opened her womb.

Speaker 2 00:03:18

Here we see clearly that Rachel's prayer had reached heaven

Speaker 2 00:03:24

Though the scripture here doesn't record the specifics of her petitions, the verse confirms that she had been crying out to God in desperation and in hope.

Speaker 2 00:03:34

Her story echoes the promise found in Psalms 34, verse 17.

Speaker 2 00:03:40

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears and rescues them from all their troubles.

Speaker 2 00:03:46

Rachel's answered prayer is a witness to God's compassion and responsiveness to the cries of all of his children, even when the answer feels delayed

Speaker 2 00:03:58

Verse 23 here says, So she conceived, gave birth to a son, and said, God has taken away my disgrace.

Speaker 2 00:04:07

In Rachel's time, barrenness was often viewed as a mark of shame or of failure, particularly in a culture where a woman's worth was closely tied to motherhood

Speaker 2 00:04:19

Her words, filled with relief and with gratitude, indicate that she saw this child not only as a blessing, but as the restoration of her own dignity.

Speaker 2 00:04:30

Her testimony aligns with God's promise that we see in Isaiah 54, verse 4.

Speaker 2 00:04:35

Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame.

Speaker 2 00:04:38

And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced.

Speaker 2 00:04:43

Rachel's disgrace was lifted, not by chance, but by divine intervention.

Speaker 2 00:04:49

She then names her son Joseph, saying in verse twenty four, May the Lord give me another son

Speaker 2 00:04:56

The name Joseph sounds like the Hebrew for, may he add, expressing Rachel's continued hope in God's provision.

Speaker 2 00:05:04

Her faith did not stop at one answered prayer.

Speaker 2 00:05:07

It extended into the future, believing God could and would do even more

Speaker 2 00:05:13

This is a beautiful example of living faith.

Speaker 2 00:05:17

Not a one-time expression of trust, but a posture of ongoing dependence on the Lord.

Speaker 2 00:05:24

This forward looking faith reflects the spirit that we see in Romans chapter eight verse twenty five.

Speaker 2 00:05:31

But if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it

Speaker 2 00:05:38

Rachel's story reminds us that the fulfillment of a desire does not mean the end of faith.

Speaker 2 00:05:44

It becomes a stepping stone to deeper trust and greater hope.

Speaker 2 00:05:49

Altogether, these verses form a powerful testimony of how God responds to human longing with divine timing.

Speaker 2 00:05:58

Rachel's womb, once closed, is opened by the compassionate hand of God, who sees her, hears her, and acts upon her desire.

Speaker 2 00:06:07

Her disgrace is turned to joy, her prayers to praise, and her longing to legacy.

Speaker 2 00:06:17

We have some key takeaways from our passage of scripture today.

Speaker 2 00:06:21

The first is that God sees and hears our deepest longings.

Speaker 2 00:06:25

Rachel's story is a vivid reminder that our silent prayers and private heartaches are fully known by God.

Speaker 2 00:06:32

While others may overlook or dismiss us, God sees, listens, and responds

Speaker 2 00:06:38

The mention of Rachel by name in the text emphasizes that he engages personally and compassionately with our deepest needs

Speaker 2 00:06:48

We can bring him our most vulnerable desires, knowing that they matter to him

Speaker 2 00:06:56

Her next takeaway is that waiting is not wasted.

Speaker 2 00:07:00

Though Rachel endured years of frustration and shame, her waiting was not in vain

Speaker 2 00:07:05

The time she spent longing was not idle.

Speaker 2 00:07:08

It was a part of the process through which God would ultimately reveal his faithfulness.

Speaker 2 00:07:14

Like seeds growing underground, much of what God is doing in our lives happens beneath the surface.

Speaker 2 00:07:21

His silence does not mean absence.

Speaker 2 00:07:24

Rachel's waiting became a part of Israel's legacy.

Speaker 2 00:07:30

Our third takeaway is that God's timing is perfect.

Speaker 2 00:07:34

Rachel attempted to manipulate her circumstances out of despair, including giving her maid to Jacob.

Speaker 2 00:07:40

But when God acted in his perfect timing, the result was far greater than what she had tried to engineer on her own.

Speaker 2 00:07:47

What seemed delayed was, in fact, right on schedule, according to God's plan

Speaker 2 00:07:54

We must learn to trust the clock of heaven even when earthly time feels unbearably slow.

Speaker 2 00:08:03

Fourth takeaway is that answered prayer can lead to greater purpose.

Speaker 2 00:08:09

Joseph was not the only son Rachel longed for.

Speaker 2 00:08:13

He would become the deliverer in Egypt, saving countless lives during famine.

Speaker 2 00:08:18

This shows that God's answers often extend far beyond our immediate desires

Speaker 2 00:08:24

When God blesses us, it is often with a purpose that affects generations.

Speaker 2 00:08:30

Are we ready to steward our blessings for His glory?

Speaker 2 00:08:35

And our last takeaway is that faith must continue after the answer comes.

Speaker 2 00:08:42

Rachel didn't stop hoping for after Joseph's birth

Speaker 2 00:08:45

Her next words were filled with forward looking faith.

Speaker 2 00:08:49

May the Lord give me another son.

Speaker 2 00:08:53

Her trust in God was not a one time event, but a continual relationship.

Speaker 2 00:08:59

Likewise, our faith should not end with one answered prayer.

Speaker 2 00:09:05

We must continue trusting, asking, and believing that God is not finished with us.

Speaker 2 00:09:15

Rachel's story speaks to the universal experience of longing, whether it's for a child, a purpose, a breakthrough, or a healing.

Speaker 2 00:09:24

Her pain was real, and her disappointment was deep.

Speaker 2 00:09:28

Yet, in all of it, God was near.

Speaker 2 00:09:31

This should encourage us to bring our most vulnerable desires before Him, knowing that He is compassionate and powerful

Speaker 2 00:09:40

Many of us live with unmet desires.

Speaker 2 00:09:42

Like Rachel, we may look around and feel forgotten.

Speaker 2 00:09:46

But the truth of Scripture reminds us that God's memory is perfect and his actions are purposeful

Speaker 2 00:09:52

If you're in a season of waiting, know that God is working even in silence.

Speaker 2 00:10:01

It's also important to reflect on how our answered prayers can be used for God's glory.

Speaker 2 00:10:07

Rachel wanted a child, but God gave her Joseph, a man who would preserve nations

Speaker 2 00:10:13

Are we willing to offer our answered prayers back to God for His use?

Speaker 2 00:10:19

Lastly, we must recognize that our walk with God is a journey, not a destination.

Speaker 2 00:10:25

Rachel continued to hope after Joseph was born.

Speaker 2 00:10:28

That's a model for us, to trust him not just once, but daily, continually surrendering every desire of the heart to him.

Speaker 2 00:10:39

Before we preview our next episode, let's go to the Lord in prayer one more time.

Speaker 2 00:10:45

Lord God, we thank you for the story of Rachel and the reminder that you are always listening to the cries of our hearts.

Speaker 2 00:10:52

Help us to wait patiently, to trust fully, and to walk faithfully through every season.

Speaker 2 00:10:59

Teach us that your timing is perfect, your ways are higher, and your answers are often more beautiful than we can imagine.

Speaker 2 00:11:07

Give us courage to bring our desires to you and the faith to trust you with the outcome.

Speaker 2 00:11:13

Use our answered prayers for your glory, just as you used Joseph

Speaker 2 00:11:19

In the name of your son Jesus, we pray.

Speaker 2 00:11:22

Amen.

Speaker 2 00:11:25

On our next episode, we're going to look back a little bit.

Speaker 2 00:11:28

And we're gonna look at Leah.

Speaker 2 00:11:30

We're gonna look at the rejection that she had in this whole situation and how that that story of rejection is really a true story for us of faith.

Speaker 2 00:11:42

and of resilience.
