Speaker:

Welcome everyone to our newest episode.

Speaker:

We're thrilled to have you.

Speaker:

And we're also thrilled to have a woman named Kate Allyson

Speaker:

from Kate Allyson creative.

Speaker:

She's a book writing coach and editor who specializes in working with authors who

Speaker:

are writing a book to grow their business.

Speaker:

So we're really excited to have you.

Speaker:

Thank you for being here, Kate.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

I'm excited to be here.

Speaker:

Well, I'm always interested in finding out what brought you to this industry.

Speaker:

How did you become a coach and an editor for people who want to.

Speaker:

That is such a great question, and it really starts with,

Speaker:

I have always loved books.

Speaker:

So, as a child, there was one Christmas where all I asked for from all my family

Speaker:

and friends, all I wanted was books.

Speaker:

And I got over 50 books, and it was my best Christmas ever.

Speaker:

So thinking about that, I thought, okay, how can I use what I know about books?

Speaker:

Because obviously I've always been an avid reader.

Speaker:

I've always been able to identify what it is that actually makes a book good.

Speaker:

I also want to keep reading a book.

Speaker:

And so what I want you to do is use those skills to help people who are

Speaker:

Running a business, write a book to grow their business so that when

Speaker:

they write a book, it actually gains traction and people want to read it.

Speaker:

And so that they can get the results that they want from the book that

Speaker:

they pour their heart and soul.

Speaker:

And that's fantastic.

Speaker:

So as far as writing a book, why would a business owner want to write a book?

Speaker:

I know there's lots of great reasons.

Speaker:

What is the number one reason people come to you because they want to

Speaker:

write a book to grow their business?

Speaker:

They have something inside them that they need to share with the world.

Speaker:

And a book is a great way to do that.

Speaker:

You can do that via YouTube videos.

Speaker:

You can do that via speeches, but books have been around for so long.

Speaker:

They've been around for thousands of years.

Speaker:

And, you know, we can't say that YouTube will still be here a thousand

Speaker:

years from now, but a thousand years books will still exist.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

What about for people who want to write a book about a subject

Speaker:

like marketing, that changes.

Speaker:

How do you help those people?

Speaker:

That is a great question.

Speaker:

And I think what I do is I start by just telling what are the principles

Speaker:

of marketing that don't change?

Speaker:

Because there are things that we do in marketing that we need to

Speaker:

keep doing regardless of how we're doing it or where we're doing it.

Speaker:

There are so many different ways to market.

Speaker:

You can use advertising, you can network, you can use social media,

Speaker:

you can use YouTube, and yet, even though those things all change, SEO

Speaker:

changes, the fundamentals of, you need to know who your ideal client is.

Speaker:

You need to know who you're talking to.

Speaker:

You need to know what problem you're going to help them solve.

Speaker:

Those are things that don't change regardless of how the technology changes.

Speaker:

So I encourage them to focus on those principles that underlie what they

Speaker:

teach and focus on that as they write.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

Can you tell us some of the, like, industries that you've worked with?

Speaker:

Yes, marketing and sales is one.

Speaker:

I've also worked with a couple financial coaches who were writing

Speaker:

books to help people understand their finances and create a

Speaker:

financial plan that works for them.

Speaker:

I've worked with a divorce coach who helps women get through divorce, and

Speaker:

one of their biggest concerns is money, and so helps them identify Okay, here's

Speaker:

how money you had money coming in.

Speaker:

Here's how you're going to deal with it after divorce So i've

Speaker:

worked with quite a few right now.

Speaker:

I'm working with a grief and loss coach so I work with people in quite

Speaker:

a few different industries and it's really a lot of fun because I feel

Speaker:

like every time I work with someone new I get to learn something new Yeah

Speaker:

that's one of the things we like about working with our clients because they

Speaker:

they do have such diverse backgrounds and even if they're All coaches or

Speaker:

they're all in real estate like they all have such different You niches and

Speaker:

things that they bring to the table.

Speaker:

So it's always so interesting.

Speaker:

So do you feel like a book really builds authority?

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Because when you have a book out there, people can read your book and they know

Speaker:

that you know what you're talking about.

Speaker:

Because sometimes one of the biggest struggles that we face is

Speaker:

how do we showcase our expertise?

Speaker:

If you're listening to this, you are an expert because you wouldn't be

Speaker:

listening to this podcast if you weren't.

Speaker:

And you have expertise to share with the world.

Speaker:

And one of the best ways to get that out there is a book, because that

Speaker:

really proves your expertise, and it can show people that you really

Speaker:

do know what you're talking about.

Speaker:

There's, there's so many people out there who are afraid of, of scammers,

Speaker:

of, well, what if this person isn't who they really say they are?

Speaker:

And a book is a great way to prove, no, hey, I'm one of the real ones.

Speaker:

I really do know what I'm doing.

Speaker:

That's amazing.

Speaker:

And I feel like, Not only does it build authority, but it

Speaker:

builds that know, like, and trust because like you, I love to read.

Speaker:

And I think about some of the books that I've read over the

Speaker:

years, the business books.

Speaker:

And you do really feel like, you know, these people, right?

Speaker:

Like Stephen Covey, you feel like you like them and you

Speaker:

trust them and you respect them.

Speaker:

And if you saw them out, you'd love to have a cup of coffee with them.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So I do think it just builds a fantastic relationship, even though it's kind

Speaker:

of one sided, because the person's reading what you've written, but

Speaker:

they're really getting to know you.

Speaker:

Yes, and that's why it's important when you write a book to include personal

Speaker:

stories of how you got where you were, even if those stories are sometimes hard

Speaker:

to tell, because Those are the stories that your readers can probably relate

Speaker:

to the most are the ones where you struggled and they're going to want to

Speaker:

know, okay, how did you get through that?

Speaker:

And how did you overcome that?

Speaker:

And they'll be able to understand that you went through the same

Speaker:

things that they're going through.

Speaker:

So you really know what it's like to be in their shoes.

Speaker:

And, oh my gosh, I feel like right now, like we talk a lot with our

Speaker:

clients about this too, and their video content, their marketing is

Speaker:

AI is putting out so much content.

Speaker:

But what AI can't do is it can't share your personal stories.

Speaker:

It can't relay that emotion of how you felt when you were struggling

Speaker:

with something and how awesome you felt when you accomplished it.

Speaker:

Or it can't share the stories about your clients and the things

Speaker:

that they were able to accomplish.

Speaker:

So I do feel like stories are, they've always been so powerful, but I feel

Speaker:

like people really need to lean into them more, now more than ever.

Speaker:

Yeah, stories are what make us human.

Speaker:

And yeah, you can ask an AI to tell you a story, but it won't

Speaker:

be as good as the story that you can tell based on your own life.

Speaker:

I promise you.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

So I'm curious, do you encourage your clients to obviously write the

Speaker:

book and you help them publish it?

Speaker:

But do you encourage them to sell it or kind of use it as a giveaway lead magnet?

Speaker:

So I have clients who do both I have some who sell it because it's another

Speaker:

stream of income for them Others want to use it as a giveaway, especially if you

Speaker:

are looking to get on stages It can be a great giveaway from the stage to help

Speaker:

make you memorable Or if you just want people to know who you are, especially

Speaker:

if your book is on the shorter side, it can be a really great lead magnet.

Speaker:

If you're writing a really long book that's going to teach all of

Speaker:

your secrets, then I would recommend selling it, because that's going to be

Speaker:

more valuable than a 20 page booklet on, the first steps that you take.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It can help you with your visibility.

Speaker:

I would guess.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Because when you have a book, your name is out there and having a book can also help

Speaker:

you get, again, if you want to speak on stages, if you want to get in media, both

Speaker:

local and national, you know, talk shows are always looking for authors to host.

Speaker:

So once you are an author and you have that credibility, then

Speaker:

you can get on those stages.

Speaker:

You can get in media and it can really boost your visibility.

Speaker:

In whatever world you want to boost that visibility in and podcasts, I

Speaker:

would think it'd be great for podcasts.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Yes, it really is great for getting on.

Speaker:

There are so many podcasts for authors out there.

Speaker:

In addition to the general business podcast that you can help get yourself

Speaker:

on by saying, Hey, I'm the expert.

Speaker:

I wrote the book.

Speaker:

There are also podcasts for authors and yeah, there are so

Speaker:

many opportunities out there.

Speaker:

So I know a lot of people, the word imposter syndrome

Speaker:

gets thrown around a lot.

Speaker:

So do you think books?

Speaker:

Helping people write a book about their business or some aspect of their business

Speaker:

helps them get over imposter syndrome.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

I think that it's, it's always going to be there.

Speaker:

You know, that little voice in the back of your head that says,

Speaker:

Oh, you're not good enough.

Speaker:

Who are you to do this?

Speaker:

But writing a book really kind of helps show why you are

Speaker:

the person to be doing this.

Speaker:

And one thing that really surprises my clients is they know that writing a

Speaker:

book, they know that their book is going to change the lives of their readers.

Speaker:

They know it's going to change the lives of their clients.

Speaker:

What they don't realize is how much it's going to change themselves and how

Speaker:

much more they'll be able to show up for their clients, for their readers, for

Speaker:

their audience in a way that really helps kick that imposter syndrome to the curb.

Speaker:

Well, I think you would have to feel really accomplished because I

Speaker:

think for most of us, The thought of writing a book is scary.

Speaker:

Not just the imposter syndrome, but just the whole process, figuring out

Speaker:

how to write a book and how to get all this information out of our heads

Speaker:

and onto the pages and not sound like a crazy person in your book.

Speaker:

So yeah, I could imagine that it really does empower them in a lot of ways.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

And in fact, I have one client, one thing that, that scares clients is

Speaker:

they think, okay, I'm an expert at what I do, but I'm not a writer.

Speaker:

And I had one client who came to me and she had dyslexia.

Speaker:

She had actually been told by her 10th grade English teacher

Speaker:

that she should not write.

Speaker:

Having been told that, she knew that she wanted to write a book because,

Speaker:

you know, she knew that what she taught, fitness, and she knew how

Speaker:

powerful what she taught could be.

Speaker:

And she didn't want to let her fear of being a bad writer hold her back.

Speaker:

And that's where people like me, editors and book coaches, we come in and we

Speaker:

say, okay, you tell the stories and we'll clean it up and make sure that

Speaker:

it looks good, that you're not going to embarrass yourself when you publish it.

Speaker:

Because I really do believe that writing a book can be for anyone.

Speaker:

You do not have to have perfect English.

Speaker:

Grammar skills.

Speaker:

You do not have to be a great speller.

Speaker:

That's what editors are for.

Speaker:

We are here for you to help you with those things.

Speaker:

So we really want to see, I, I really love to see when authors

Speaker:

realize that, oh yes, they can write even if they've never thought of

Speaker:

themselves as a writer, it really is possible for them to write a book.

Speaker:

Yeah, my fear with writing is more on the, is it going to be boring or

Speaker:

is it going to be entertaining and interesting and something I'm proud of?

Speaker:

Or is it going to be something I go, Oh no, why did I say that?

Speaker:

And that's a great point.

Speaker:

And that's one thing that I really help coach my authors through is how

Speaker:

do we write a book that you are proud of where you just say, yes, Oh my gosh.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

I'm so proud of this.

Speaker:

I want to share it with the world.

Speaker:

And the wonderful thing about writing a book is that.

Speaker:

Once you start writing, I find that then sometimes people don't want to

Speaker:

stop so they'll finish their book and then they're like, Okay, well

Speaker:

now I need to write my next book.

Speaker:

Because I think that writing a book, it's kind of like potato chips.

Speaker:

You can't write just one.

Speaker:

Once you write one, then you realize, Oh, I have so much more

Speaker:

to say that I didn't put in this book because it didn't quite fit.

Speaker:

But now I have an idea for another book and here's where that's going to go.

Speaker:

So it can really be an exciting process.

Speaker:

And once you realize that you can do it and that it is easier than it

Speaker:

sounds, then you want to do more of it.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

I love the potato chip analogy.

Speaker:

I think I need potato chips now.

Speaker:

So Kate, you have been doing this for six years and I can see like how passionate

Speaker:

you are and how excited you are about it.

Speaker:

And I think it's so interesting that you work with so many different people.

Speaker:

So I can imagine just learning all of these from all of these

Speaker:

different industries must very much enrich your life.

Speaker:

So this has been like an amazing conversation.

Speaker:

Is there any other tip or thought that you would like to share with someone who

Speaker:

is maybe thinking about writing a book?

Speaker:

But they're just not sure.

Speaker:

I really believe that we all have a story to tell.

Speaker:

And that every single one of us can help other people by sharing our story.

Speaker:

And so, if you're thinking about writing a book, there's a reason for it.

Speaker:

There's something that's calling you to do it.

Speaker:

And so I would encourage you to start doing it.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

And how can people reach out to you?

Speaker:

That's a great question.

Speaker:

So I am pretty active on Facebook.

Speaker:

I have a Facebook page and then also through my website is a

Speaker:

great way if they want to schedule a call with me or email me.

Speaker:

That's a great way for them to get in touch with me.

Speaker:

Excellent.

Speaker:

We'll put that in the show notes.

Speaker:

So Kate, this has been so much fun.

Speaker:

And so you're full of so much information and tips and encouragement

Speaker:

for people who want to write a book.

Speaker:

So if anybody out there is thinking about it, you can reach out to Kate.

Speaker:

And like I said, we'll put her details in the show notes.

Speaker:

So thank you so much for joining us today, Kate.
