Speaker AHere's Today's reading from First John 4:1:6 Reading from the Message don't believe everything you hear my dear friends.
Speaker ADon't believe everything you hear.
Speaker ACarefully weigh and examine what people tell you.
Speaker ANot everyone who talks about God comes from God.
Speaker AThere are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.
Speaker AHere's how you test for the genuine spirit of God.
Speaker AEveryone who confesses openly his faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came as an actual flesh and blood person, comes from God and belongs to God.
Speaker AAnd everyone who refuses to confess faith in Jesus has nothing in common with God.
Speaker AThis is the spirit of Antichrist that you heard was coming.
Speaker AWell, here it is sooner than we thought.
Speaker AMy dear children, you come from God and belong to God.
Speaker AYou have already won a big victory over those false teachers, for the Spirit in you is far stronger than anything in the world.
Speaker AThese people belong to the Christ denying world.
Speaker AThey talk the world's language and the world eats it up.
Speaker ABut we come from God and belong to God.
Speaker AAnyone who knows God understands us and listens.
Speaker AA person who has nothing to do with God will of course not listen to us.
Speaker AThis is another test for telling the spirit of truth from the spirit of deception.
Speaker AWell, in today's reflection here, friends, we're exploring this text that speaks powerfully to a struggle, indeed our current struggle, with truth, misinformation and authentic spirituality.
Speaker ALet's get into some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first thing we're going to talk about is going beyond binary thinking.
Speaker AThis passage might seem to promote strict us versus Them divisions.
Speaker AProgressive theology invites us to dig a little deeper.
Speaker AThe call to open quote carefully weigh and examine close quote suggests thoughtful discernment rather than a knee jerk react rejection of different perspectives.
Speaker AIn our polarized world, this carefully weighing becomes even more crucial.
Speaker AThe second point is about embodied truth.
Speaker AThe emphasis on Jesus coming as an actual flesh and blood person.
Speaker AClose quote post points to an important principle.
Speaker AAuthentic spirituality must be grounded in material reality.
Speaker AAny theology that ignores physical suffering, environmental destruction or bodily needs fails this test.
Speaker ATrue faith must engage with real world struggles for justice and liberation.
Speaker AThird point is about community discernment.
Speaker AThe text here speaks of a collective wisdom.
Speaker AWe come from God and anyone who knows God understands us.
Speaker AThis suggests that discernment isn't just individual, but communal.
Speaker AIn an age of algorithmic bubbles and isolated viewpoints, we need diverse communities of discernment to help us recognize truth.
Speaker AHere's your action step this week.
Speaker APractice collective discernment.
Speaker AThat is choose some pressing issue, maybe it's a social justice concern or environmental crisis or racism or equality of some sort.
Speaker AAnd intentionally seek perspectives from two or three different communities, particularly those who are impacted by the issue.
Speaker ANotice how different viewpoints enhance the understanding.
Speaker AShare your learnings.
Speaker AMaybe you with your own community or build some collective wisdom about it.
Speaker AWe're going to pray here in just a minute, but I want you to know that we are here to serve you in so many ways, including giving you your own at home Bible Study Guide.

Speaker AHelp us develop keen discernment.
Speaker AGround us in communities of wisdom.
Speaker AConnect us to the real needs of flesh and blood people.
Speaker AFree us from the temptation of easy answers.
Speaker AMay we be people who carefully weigh and examine, who listen deeply to different perspectives, who who seek truth that liberates all.
Speaker AIn openness and wisdom we pray.
