It's time for Barbecue Nation with jt so fire up your grill, light the charcoal, and get your smoker cooking.
Speaker ANow from the Turnip Don't Burn it studios in Portland.
Speaker AHere's jt.
Speaker BThis is an encore.
Speaker CHey, everybody.
Speaker CWelcome to Barbecue Nation.
Speaker CI'm JT along with hall of Famer Leanne Whippen.
Speaker CThat's her.
Speaker CMs. Whippen is with us today again, and we're coming to you from the Turn It, Don't Burn it studios here in Portland.
Speaker CDave and Chris are floating around here somewhere, and we'd like to thank the folks at Painted Hills Natural Beef.
Speaker CBeef the way nature intended.
Speaker CWell, it's almost that time of the year.
Speaker DThe.
Speaker CJack, those two words.
Speaker CThose two words are like your taxes.
Speaker CThey just resonate with people, you know, and.
Speaker DBut not in a bad way.
Speaker CNot in a bad way at all.
Speaker CNot in a bad way.
Speaker CIt's been two years.
Speaker CAlmost two years to the day.
Speaker CI looked it up before we came on the air.
Speaker CWe got Jed Laurent back with us from.
Speaker CFrom Jack Daniels, and we're going to talk a little bit about Jack itself and Jed's very difficult job there at.
Speaker CAt the distillery.
Speaker DOh.
Speaker CI mean, I tried to talk you out of a job.
Speaker CI.
Speaker CThe last time you were on the show.
Speaker CI remember.
Speaker BYou know what?
Speaker BI pulled up the.
Speaker BThe podcast that we did two years ago, and I was listening, and you were.
Speaker BYou were hustling pretty hard.
Speaker CYeah, I was.
Speaker CI, you know, I gotta admit, it.
Speaker DIt.
Speaker CBut it's a damn good job if you get it.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker BIf you can get it.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CI don't think I was quite qualified, but I did volunteer, Leanne, if you don't know, I volunteered to be the librarian.
Speaker CYes.
Speaker CJack Daniels.
Speaker BOh, yeah.
Speaker CBecause their library doesn't contain very many books, but a lot of bottles of Jack.
Speaker CSo.
Speaker DSounds like a good job.
Speaker CI was gonna work for free, you know, type thing.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CAnyway, since we.
Speaker CAnd I. I emailed you about this, Jed, since we last talked.
Speaker CYou said your title hasn't changed, but because you're an ambassador for the brand and all that.
Speaker CBut you also have more responsibilities, so why don't you walk our audience through exactly what your terrible schedule day to day is, and then kind of what they've so graciously piled on your shoulders since the last time.
Speaker BSo just a recap from last time when we talked.
Speaker BMy.
Speaker BMy job is senior brand ambassador for the distillery.
Speaker BAnd.
Speaker BAnd like you were just talking to.
Speaker BI'm a sensory tester.
Speaker BI'm a master taster on the property so, yeah, the job's hard.
Speaker BI. I've taken on some responsibilities of historian for on site.
Speaker BSo when we have tour guides or staff that needs a little more information, I'll gather it, I'll get with archive.
Speaker BWe'll look through video.
Speaker BSo that's a new addition.
Speaker BWe've started some new tour options on the property.
Speaker BAnd so I've helped compile information and help our team, where there's a couple people who work together to get those tours going.
Speaker BBecause we have a lot of repeat offenders.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BAnd they just want to see something new.
Speaker BSo building new tour tour options.
Speaker COh, cool.
Speaker CAnd what can people expect to see if they come on the tour?
Speaker BSo our normal tour is a walk through the entire distillery.
Speaker BNone of it's a mockup.
Speaker BSo while you're walking around the property, it's the same property that Jack bought.
Speaker BWe're going to walk into the distillery where we've made your whiskey.
Speaker BI mean, this.
Speaker BIt made the whiskey for Frank Sinatra, the man, the singer.
Speaker BUm, we're going to go through bottling.
Speaker BYou're going to see the whole thing.
Speaker BWe're an open book.
Speaker BAnd so we always tell people, if you have a question, just ask.
Speaker BAnd if we don't know the answer, we have somebody who has that answer.
Speaker BSo we'll.
Speaker BWe'll talk to you about anything.
Speaker COkay, I've got a question then.
Speaker CYeah, we had trying to think if it was Adrian Miller's book.
Speaker CI don't think so.
Speaker CI think it was Joe's book.
Speaker CIt was on the history of black barbecue.
Speaker CAnd they mentioned in the book that there was a black man that worked there and actually helped teach Jack Daniels how to.
Speaker CHow to make it, how to distill whiskey and.
Speaker DSure.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CAnd then he stayed on as an employee for quite a while now.
Speaker COh, is that true?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BHe wasn't just an employee.
Speaker BSo the story starts with Jack moving on to Mr. Dan Call's property.
Speaker BHe was in his preteen, early teen years, say, like 12, 13 years old.
Speaker BHe met Mr. Nathan nearest green.
Speaker BHe's the black gentleman you were talking about.
Speaker BAnd he learned how to make whiskey from Mr. Green.
Speaker BMr. Green was his mentor.
Speaker BAnd so he learns how to make whiskey.
Speaker BDuring that time period.
Speaker BHe was an enslaved man over on the Call property.
Speaker BRemember this is all during the Civil War, right after emancipation.
Speaker BHe wasn't just an employee.
Speaker BJack hired him on as the very first master distiller we ever had.
Speaker BIt's an absolutely beautiful story.
Speaker BIt was more like an uncle nephew or a father son kind of Situation.
Speaker BThat's how close they were.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BThe property we're on.
Speaker BMr. Green didn't come up here to run whiskey with Jack, but his son, George Green, came up here, ran whiskey with Jack, and they were best friends.
Speaker BAnd we have never distilled a drop of whiskey in 157 years with that.
Speaker BAgreed.
Speaker BWorking with this.
Speaker CSo that's what I thought.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker CThe family still Legacy.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CAnd Mr. Green also was into barbecue.
Speaker CThat's how I tied in the story there.
Speaker BWell, who is it?
Speaker DYeah, well, I think everybody's in, Right?
Speaker BThat's a.
Speaker BThat's a great point.
Speaker BIs that in that black barbecue book thing?
Speaker CI believe so.
Speaker CI. I'll get you the name.
Speaker CI'll email you the name.
Speaker BAbsolutely.
Speaker BI would love to know that history.
Speaker EYeah.
Speaker CBut I just found that fascinating that not only did Mr. Green teach Jack how to.
Speaker CHow to distill and how to make whiskey properly, but he was also kind of a pit master, too.
Speaker CSo that was.
Speaker BThat would be awesome information, especially at this time of year when the Jack's coming in town.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BYou can add that to the conversation saying, look, whiskey and barbecues always been together.
Speaker CYeah, well, it has, it has.
Speaker CAnd you guys make some great barbecue sauce.
Speaker CYou know, I've tried.
Speaker BNo, it's really good barbecue sauce.
Speaker BHave you tried our dry rubs?
Speaker CNo, I have not.
Speaker BYou'll be able to get some when you get down here.
Speaker CThere you go.
Speaker CThere you go.
Speaker CSo how long have you worked for the Jack Daniels Company?
Speaker BSo I'm coming up on nine years now.
Speaker BSo the last time we talked, I was just over seven years.
Speaker BNow I'm.
Speaker BOr six years.
Speaker BJust over six years.
Speaker BNow I'm just over eight years and I'm still a rookie.
Speaker BI know it sounds crazy, people like, if your listeners know about the distillery and they've been down here, there's a chance they came across two gentlemen, Goose and Randall.
Speaker BThey both retired last December.
Speaker BAt 46 years working here.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BNobody gives up on whiskey.
Speaker CNo.
Speaker CWell, why should they?
Speaker BIt's the happiest place on earth.
Speaker BSomebody else uses that term, but.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CBut I think these days, yours is probably happier, you know, the Jack is probably much, much, much happier than that.
Speaker BOh, my goodness.
Speaker BOh, it smells wonderful, too.
Speaker BI think we talked about the last time I was on with you.
Speaker BThe smell of the smell coming from the square and the whiskey in the air.
Speaker BIt's.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker COh, yeah.
Speaker CI'm excited.
Speaker CI really am excited.
Speaker DWhen was the last time you were there, Jeff?
Speaker CI haven't never been to the Jack, you haven't.
Speaker CNo.
Speaker DOh, my gosh.
Speaker DYou're in for a treat.
Speaker CI'm a rookie.
Speaker CI'm a rookie.
Speaker BSo, Liang, how long have y' all known each other and why has he not come down?
Speaker DYou know?
Speaker DWell, I've been on the show almost two years.
Speaker DAlmost two years.
Speaker DBut we knew each other before that just from, you know, his show acquaintance.
Speaker DWe really never met until we were at the national barbecue convention in person.
Speaker DSo, yeah, the.
Speaker DJack just.
Speaker DI just assumed.
Speaker COh, no.
Speaker DWow.
Speaker BNo.
Speaker CI keep telling you, I'm a Yankee and we don't get out much, so.
Speaker DYou know, definitely in for a treat.
Speaker CYeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker CNot only now that I've met Leanne in person, and she's going to be spending a little over a week with me up here.
Speaker CThat's.
Speaker CWe're.
Speaker CWe're old, old pals now.
Speaker CBut to go back and meet Jed and see the.
Speaker CSee the competition and see the town of Lynchburg.
Speaker CNow, if you ask me about Kentucky, I've been to Kentucky hundreds of times, literally.
Speaker BWell, there's no need to say anything about Kentucky.
Speaker CIs there a real rival rivalry back.
Speaker BThere between Kentucky neighbors of the North?
Speaker DYeah, to the north, Yeah.
Speaker CI like that.
Speaker CWell, you know, you can't go to Kentucky, especially like Louisville or someplace like that, and, you know, they don't talk about the quality of their bourbon and, you know, smooth Kentucky sipping whiskey and all that stuff, you know.
Speaker CExcept what still fascinates me north of Louisville, there's Oldham county, which I spent a lot of time in, is a dry county, much like Lynchburg.
Speaker CIs Lynchburg so dry?
Speaker DLynchburg, absolutely.
Speaker CSo if you walk down the street, if you brought your own drink with you in Lynchburg, will you get in trouble?
Speaker BDo you want to meet the sheriff?
Speaker CNo, not really.
Speaker CNot really?
Speaker CNo.
Speaker CI'll take your word for it that he's a good guy.
Speaker BNo.
Speaker BSo we're a dry county in the sense that you can drink at home.
Speaker BWe have no bars, taverns, pubs, no liquor by the drink.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo open container walking around is kind of a.
Speaker BNo, no.
Speaker CGot it.
Speaker BWe tend to have a lot of parties.
Speaker BI mean, while you're down here, you'll.
Speaker BYou'll probably find somebody's house that you can hang out at.
Speaker CProbably.
Speaker CI would.
Speaker CI would think that that would probably be the case, you know, almost guarantee it.
Speaker CYeah, I would think so.
Speaker CSo, Leanne, how many times have you been to the Jack?
Speaker DGosh, I haven't counted, quite frankly.
Speaker DI'm not competing this year.
Speaker DI'm judging this year.
Speaker DBut the last time I competed at the maybe seven, eight years ago.
Speaker DIt's been a while, but I've been judging almost every year since then.
Speaker CYou know, we could have met earlier because they had asked me to judge the Jack a few years back and then I couldn't because they asked me like a week before and I couldn't clear my schedule.
Speaker CSomebody had poked out.
Speaker CIt was kind of a celebrity deal or whatever, but it doesn't matter.
Speaker CBut they said, can you be here like Thursday?
Speaker CAnd it was like Monday, like, no, I can't.
Speaker CI didn't know.
Speaker CIf they asked me now, though, I'd probably, probably make it happen.
Speaker CYou know what I mean?
Speaker CAnyway, we're going to take a break.
Speaker CWe're going to be back with Jed and Leanne and myself here on Barbecue Nation after this.
Speaker CDon't go away.
Speaker FNeed a vehicle.
Speaker FDoes it feel hopeless?
Speaker FDid other dealerships already say no because of credit or negative equity?
Speaker FWestin Kia wants to say yes during the Kia Savings event.
Speaker FCome see Weston Kia, Oregon's all time leader in Kia sales.
Speaker FJanuary 1994 to December 25.
Speaker FWeston Kia sold more new kids than any other kid dealer or Kia core.
Speaker EHey, everybody, it's Jeff here.
Speaker EI want to tell you about something really cool.
Speaker EHeritage steel cookware.
Speaker EI just got mine.
Speaker CI do a lot of cooking and.
Speaker EIt'S got five ply construction, stay cool handles.
Speaker EIt's titanium strengthened.
Speaker EIt's got all the great stuff.
Speaker EJust go to HeritageSteel us and find out more.
Speaker CYou'll love it.
Speaker EI guarantee it.
Speaker BThis is an encore.
Speaker CWelcome back to Barbecue Nation on JT with Ms. Whippen here, hall of famer.
Speaker CI will tell you something, Leanne.
Speaker CI was.
Speaker CI just ran out of time.
Speaker CI was trying to get a director's chair back made for you before you came up here.
Speaker CIn a few days, it said Ms. Whippen on the back.
Speaker DOh, that would have been cute.
Speaker CThat might be your.
Speaker CThat might be your Christmas present.
Speaker DYou know, I would like something a little more comfortable than a director's chair.
Speaker DSo you can.
Speaker CI'll put a pillow on it.
Speaker BThat's exactly what I'll do.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker DOkay.
Speaker CI'll put a pillow in and a Snuggie blanket because he'll be cold up here.
Speaker DI will, I will.
Speaker CSo let's talk about the competition, Jed.
Speaker CNow, you know you have to be invited.
Speaker CYou have to have competed.
Speaker CI mean, there's all kinds of prerequisites.
Speaker CWhat happens like next week at the end of this coming week and Then you've got about 10 days till the.
Speaker CMaybe two weeks till the Jack starts.
Speaker CWhat's going on there at the.
Speaker CAt the distillery in the town of Lynchburg.
Speaker BSo, yeah, starting.
Speaker BStarting next week, we're going to be coordinating everything from.
Speaker BWe've already got food trucks lined up.
Speaker BWe've got kind of, like a petting zoo stuff.
Speaker BWe have, like, a craft fair downtown.
Speaker BWhen you get down here, you'll see, like, people might be selling some stuff on the square, like a craft fair.
Speaker BAnd you drop down in the Wiseman park, which is right behind Ms. Mary Bobo's, and they should have some food trucks out and some.
Speaker BSome different, like, drinks.
Speaker BBut next week, we'll be coordinating.
Speaker BFinalizing all of that.
Speaker BWe should be getting our giant tent in where we actually do the judging portion of it, making sure that simply we have everything from the tent to toilets.
Speaker BEverything needs to be coordinated from the most important thing to, you know, just making sure everybody has facilities that they can get to.
Speaker BBut we're gonna have musicians playing music.
Speaker BWe're gonna have all kinds of stuff for the actual events.
Speaker BSo next week, we'll pretty much be coordinating all those things.
Speaker CSo now I know Leanne, when she's at a judging table with the other judges, they get to have samples.
Speaker CBut do you get to sneak around and have a little taste of the barbecue?
Speaker BNo, the.
Speaker BThe most they'll let me do is judge the desserts.
Speaker CHello.
Speaker DThe desserts are epic there.
Speaker DI mean, they are so large, sometimes it takes two.
Speaker DTwo people to carry them in.
Speaker DBut seriously, they are.
Speaker DAt the World Food Championships, they do, like, unbelievably cheffy type food.
Speaker DBut for these barbecuers to put out the desserts that you see there, they're culinary.
Speaker DI mean, just beautiful.
Speaker BOh, they're beautiful.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DAnd they taste as good as they look.
Speaker DIt's.
Speaker BI would agree, but no, I don't.
Speaker BI don't get a chance to walk around to the table and sneak a bite.
Speaker BMaybe after the judging, if the tray's coming past, we might grab something.
Speaker CHand action there.
Speaker BYeah, just a quick snatch.
Speaker BBut we've got a lot of stuff going on.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BWe've got the.
Speaker BAnd I'm looking at my list right now.
Speaker BWe have a cocktail competition now.
Speaker BOh, yeah, right.
Speaker BSo for the barbecuers or chefs that want to have, like, a little bit of fun, make their own cocktail, we have a competition for that, and we have kind of like a.
Speaker BHave you seen the.
Speaker BI think it's Iron Chef, where they have the box.
Speaker BThey open the box right they can make whatever it is inside the box.
Speaker BSo we've had that for a few years, but it's.
Speaker BIt's a fun.
Speaker BIt's.
Speaker BBut once you're in the.
Speaker BAnd Leanne, you can speak this.
Speaker BOnce you're in there judging, you're.
Speaker BYou're in there, right?
Speaker DYou're in there.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DI mean, you could take a break to go to the restroom, but you're in there.
Speaker DAnd I must say, you guys have stepped it up as far as the size of the tent, because it was never that big.
Speaker DAnd even when the awards came, it was like, people were, like, all smushed together.
Speaker DAnd now it's a huge tent, and.
Speaker BIt'S an epic tent.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DBut people actually go on the outside of the tent and watch the judges judge, which to me is just.
Speaker DIt's torture.
Speaker DThey're watching us judge and eat this food.
Speaker DI don't know what they expect to gain from that, but, yeah, there's an actual, like, audience around the perimeter of the tent while we're judging.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BBecause they can't get in.
Speaker BSo judging tent is for the judges.
Speaker CRight.
Speaker BSo you can stand around the outside, but you can't get into the tent and mingle with the judges.
Speaker CDo they hold up little signs that say, we'll judge for food, something like that?
Speaker CNo, I might do that to you, Leanne, because I won't be able to get in the tent.
Speaker CSo I might just hold up a little science.
Speaker CSay, I know.
Speaker CLeanne, you have to do.
Speaker DAside from this whole barbecue thing is Ms. Mary Bobos is known for her fried chicken, and she does, like, certain seatings, and you have to have reservations.
Speaker DAnd I forgot to tell you about that.
Speaker DIt's probably already booked, but that is one thing you need to do when you're there is.
Speaker DGo ahead.
Speaker BHow is that Miss Mary Bobo's today?
Speaker BThe fried chicken is absolutely amazing.
Speaker DYeah, that's, like, a thing.
Speaker CAll right, I'm leaving right now.
Speaker CYou guys finish the show.
Speaker CI'm going.
Speaker CMight take me a couple days to get there, but I'll.
Speaker CI'll make it there.
Speaker BSo there.
Speaker BThere are.
Speaker BJt, real quick.
Speaker BThere's a.
Speaker BThere's a special rule, and I'm sure it's everywhere for the KCBS judges, but there's no alcohol allowed in a tent for judges, so they're right next to Daniels, and they cannot drink at all.
Speaker DJust water.
Speaker DThat's all we're allowed.
Speaker CHow do you make it, Leanne?
Speaker CHow do you survive?
Speaker DFine.
Speaker DI do fine.
Speaker BShe makes up for it in the evening after the judging's over.
Speaker DWell, I don't know.
Speaker DYou said there was a cocktail contest, so.
Speaker CIs that.
Speaker CAre all the.
Speaker CAll the entries in the cocktail contest?
Speaker CAre all they.
Speaker CAre they all made with Jack?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOld number seven.
Speaker BActually, it's got to be very specific to old number seven.
Speaker BThey can do anything they want.
Speaker BLike, I think it was last year or the year before, we had some folks smoke, like an old Fashioned, which is cool.
Speaker BBarbecue smoking.
Speaker BThey played on that.
Speaker BBut yeah, yeah.
Speaker BThey have to use all of a sudden.
Speaker CWow, they need a judge for that.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DDo they need a judge for that?
Speaker DRight.
Speaker BSay things like, I'll judge anything, just let me judge.
Speaker DThat's what you say.
Speaker DI just wonder, just on the Jack side of things, what is your most recent product that you've launched?
Speaker DIs it that.
Speaker DHoney, I know that's been out a long time, but is that the last or what?
Speaker DYou launch one every year.
Speaker DI mean, how does it work?
Speaker DAnd you have gentleman's Jack, too.
Speaker DGentleman's Jack is from.
Speaker BYeah, this is hard to believe.
Speaker BWe have, and we call them expressions, but we have 15, I think 15 is the count.
Speaker B15 expressions of our whiskey.
Speaker BSo gentleman Jack, old number seven, honey fire apple, single barrel, select barrel proof rye, barrel proof rye, bonded triple mash, bonded rye, Sinatra.
Speaker BWe have a few.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BBut what's amazing about our products, every bottle we have, it is Jack Daniels.
Speaker BOld number seven, Jack Daniels, Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniels, honey.
Speaker BIt's always the Jack Daniels brand and it's expression of that whiskey.
Speaker BAnd so we, we, we make whiskey, we make a bunch of expressions, but we make just a couple of grain bills.
Speaker COkay.
Speaker DAll right.
Speaker CWe're going to take another break, and we're going to be back with Jed and Leanne and talk more about the Jack and the fun we're going to have there in about two weeks, right after this.
Speaker CYou're listening to Barbecue Nation.
Speaker CAt least I hope you are.
Speaker EHey, everybody, it's JT And I have eaten, if you've ever looked at me, you know that.
Speaker EBut I have eaten seafood all over the world, and I can tell you there's no place better than here in Oregon and our Dungeness crab.
Speaker EIf you want to learn more about Oregon Dungeness crab, just go to OregonDungeness.org and.
Speaker EAnd find out how to cook it, how to catch it, where to buy it, and the sustainability of what they're doing there in the Oregon Crab Commission.
Speaker CCheck it out.
Speaker BThis is an encore.
Speaker CWelcome back to Barbecue Nation.
Speaker CI'm JT along with hall of Famer Ms. Leanne Whippin.
Speaker CSpeaking of Ms. Whippin, here's something for you, Jed.
Speaker CHave you ever tried her pig powder?
Speaker BPick powder?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BI mean, is that.
Speaker CThe name of.
Speaker BIt is pig powder?
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker DIt's tram tabs.
Speaker DIt's after my dad.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BWhat's the name of it?
Speaker DIt's trim tabs Pig powder.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BI'm writing it down.
Speaker DIt's.
Speaker DIt won best trap on the planet.
Speaker DAnd a lot of competitors use that.
Speaker DAnd.
Speaker DAnd you know what?
Speaker CProof.
Speaker DThis is a funny story.
Speaker DNot funny, but very interesting.
Speaker DI noticed that in the past few days, my sales of pig powder have dipped a little bit, and I can't figure this out.
Speaker DWell, hello.
Speaker DEveryone's going to the Royal.
Speaker DThey already have their pig powder.
Speaker BThey already have.
Speaker DThey're on the road to the Royal.
Speaker DAnd I really do think so many competitors use it, and there's a little bit of a slump because they don't need it at this time.
Speaker DThey either already have it or they were too late to the.
Speaker DYou know, whatever.
Speaker DBut I do attribute it to that.
Speaker BWhere can I buy it?
Speaker DYou can get it@pigpowder.com.
Speaker Di personally fill and ship out the orders.
Speaker BHey, JT, do you like the way I had her plug that?
Speaker CI. I love it.
Speaker CI'm just sitting back.
Speaker CI'm just sitting back.
Speaker CIt's all good.
Speaker CIt's all good.
Speaker CSee, you can sell pig powder, but I can't judge desserts, you know?
Speaker BSo I think, jt, the last time I was on your show, yeah, I was a novice, you know, smoker at best.
Speaker BBut since I've talked to y', all, I've done, I think, two full briskets.
Speaker BMy daughter, my oldest daughter, got married, and she wanted me to do pulled pork for the wedding.
Speaker BThere were sandwiches and such, and I did what would be close to £50.
Speaker BYeah, right?
Speaker B50.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DI don't know.
Speaker BWe did, like, eight to ten butts.
Speaker BI have no idea.
Speaker BAnd so I smoked all of them.
Speaker BI gotta tell you, everybody was happy.
Speaker BI didn't kill anybody with my smoke.
Speaker DVery good.
Speaker BBut I did not have pick powder because I did not know.
Speaker DGood.
Speaker CIt is.
Speaker CIt is, it is.
Speaker DI'll bring you some when I come.
Speaker BOh, nice.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BIf you want to do it.
Speaker DOkay.
Speaker COh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker CYou can't see it because of my green screen, but I've got a few boxes of it right behind me.
Speaker CThere's.
Speaker BOh, my goodness.
Speaker CAnd Leanne and I are going to pay for our television expenses by standing on the corner selling pig powder.
Speaker DDo you know I have a whole pallet landing this Thursday and I unload the pallet myself and bring it up to my second floor apartment and it takes me four hours up and down the steps and I keep it in my apartment.
Speaker BCome on, Leanne, can you flex for us?
Speaker DI can, yeah.
Speaker CShe, she may be little, but she's mighty.
Speaker CI'm going to tell you.
Speaker BThat sounds like it.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker DBig workout.
Speaker COh, okay.
Speaker CAnd I also need to plug our, our good friends at Painter Hills Natural Beef.
Speaker CDon't forget, you can go to naturalbeef.com and if you type in the code BBQ Nation, you get 15% off.
Speaker CAnd Leanne is actually going to go to cowboy country with us here in about a week, a little over a week, and see where Painted Hills comes from.
Speaker CSo there you go.
Speaker CBut just use the code BBQ Nation.
Speaker CI don't know why my nose is itching today.
Speaker CI'm like Bewitched or something.
Speaker CAnyway, there it is.
Speaker CThose are the two plugs for the show.
Speaker CHow big of an effect does the Jack have on Lynchburg?
Speaker CI mean, you always see things, Jed.
Speaker CYou know, seafare comes into Seattle and it's got a $385 million impact on the economy.
Speaker CBut that thing is a week long Rose Parade and in Portland, you know, those types of things.
Speaker CBut when you get into a really small town like Lynchburg in comparison to the bigger cities and you have an event like this, it's got to have a really positive financial impact on the community.
Speaker BSure.
Speaker BI would say, like this is the 34th jack we've done.
Speaker BAnd what's, what's amazing is in kind of like Leanne was talking about her pick powder, it kind of ebbs and flows.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BSo in the early part of our year, January and February, we don't see a lot of people come in.
Speaker BYou know, it's cold, it's winter time, school's still in.
Speaker BSo travel as far as tourism is down, but around this time of year, school's back in.
Speaker BBut people are having like fall breaks and this is perfect.
Speaker BYou know, we're bringing more and more and more things to the Jack because we want your listeners to come and visit.
Speaker BIt doesn't, I mean, if you're close to come and see this, why not?
Speaker BIf you're in Nashville, Huntsville, if you're in Atlanta, Georgia, you're only three hours away from us.
Speaker BYou know, I mean, come to the Jack, you'll have a great tour, you'll have a great experience.
Speaker BIt's Family friendly.
Speaker BAnd we want more and more people to come.
Speaker BI think our max we've ever had, and I think I said this a couple years ago, the highest count I think was 30,000 over the weekend.
Speaker BAnd it's a multi day event over the weekend.
Speaker BNow we have an Indian motorcycle rally just before it.
Speaker BSo last year I think we had over 300 bikes.
Speaker BIndian motorcycles come in for the rally.
Speaker BSo we want the influx of people to experience a little town.
Speaker CWhose idea was it originally to do the Jack?
Speaker CThe competition?
Speaker BOh, God.
Speaker BYou would ask me a question that is going to slip my mind.
Speaker BOh, my goodness.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BI have to just be honest with you.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker CLeanne, do you know?
Speaker DNo, I don't.
Speaker DI'm kind of curious, though.
Speaker DI know.
Speaker DI think my dad was at the first Jack judging.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DI mean, it's.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker D35 years.
Speaker DI don't know.
Speaker DOkay.
Speaker CWell, I certainly don't or I wouldn't have asked the question.
Speaker DBut you know who would know is Artie Davis.
Speaker DHe would probably know.
Speaker CArtie Davis knows everything about everything.
Speaker CAnd that's.
Speaker CI'm being.
Speaker CI'm not being mean.
Speaker CI'm just saying already, anything to do with barbecue, he'll be there.
Speaker DHe hands out the.
Speaker DThe little walnuts, the good luck walnuts to each of the teams.
Speaker BYes, I got one of those.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DHe goes around with dirty Dick and the two of them go and hand it down.
Speaker BThat's right.
Speaker DAnd they hand out the little walnuts.
Speaker CThe dirty.
Speaker CDirty Dick handing out nuts.
Speaker BOh, yes.
Speaker DDirty Dick in the legless wonders.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker BSo what is.
Speaker BWhat is he hauling those nuts around in?
Speaker DI don't know, but it's a little bag, isn't it?
Speaker DA little sack?
Speaker BYeah, yeah.
Speaker DIt's like a burlap sack.
Speaker ERight.
Speaker BI think.
Speaker BI think you're correct.
Speaker BI think you're correct.
Speaker BJ.T.
Speaker Bjust.
Speaker BI lost it.
Speaker CI'll be back in a minute.
Speaker BJust.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker DHe hands out the nuts from the burlap sack.
Speaker BYeah, there you go.
Speaker CDo they have ribbons on them or are they.
Speaker DNo, they are a whole walnut in the shell and they have the little Jack Daniels logo thing on it.
Speaker BAnd it's good luck, right?
Speaker DIt is.
Speaker DIt's good luck.
Speaker DYes, you do.
Speaker DThat's why it's passed out.
Speaker DAnd it's.
Speaker DIt's a big deal.
Speaker BSo I sent a request for the information on the question you asked and hopefully I get a response here quickly.
Speaker CWell, we've got the after hours too, so if we If.
Speaker CIf it goes into that, then that'll be fine.
Speaker CI. I didn't know about Artie's nuts, so.
Speaker DSo the interesting thing about the jack is it is a world invitational, but even though they call it invitational, there is a lottery.
Speaker DSo you get three KCBS sanctioned state champions from New Jersey say they go into a lottery.
Speaker DOnly one state champion can get.
Speaker DCan.
Speaker DCan get pulled.
Speaker DSo you could still be a state champion and not qualify to be in the jack.
Speaker DSo it's really kind of a lottery and an invitational because some of the are automatic jacks, which mean you automatically get in the jack if you win.
Speaker DGrand champion.
Speaker BRight.
Speaker DAnd then they.
Speaker DThey also.
Speaker DThe.
Speaker DThe big deal about this is you've got all the international teams.
Speaker BThat's.
Speaker DSo you're getting really.
Speaker DIt's true.
Speaker BWorld.
Speaker DSo you're getting people from all teams from all over the world that come in on this thing.
Speaker BSo we have 66 domestic teams and 15 international teams going to be here in about two weeks.
Speaker CWow.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker DFifteen.
Speaker DSo that.
Speaker DThat's.
Speaker BThat's.
Speaker DThat's 25%.
Speaker DThe 66.
Speaker DBecause I'm a math person.
Speaker DWell, approximately, yeah.
Speaker DThat are going to be international.
Speaker DAnd so they have to figure out, you know, if they're going to get their equipment from here.
Speaker DAnd.
Speaker DAnd maybe they've never cooked on it.
Speaker DSo, I mean, it's really interesting.
Speaker DAnd you can always tell the international dessert, because some countries like marzipan or whatever, and so you'll know that it isn't a domestic.
Speaker DIt came from an international team.
Speaker DYou can almost always tell when you're tasting the desserts, because it's not Americana desserts.
Speaker DThat's what's so fun about this.
Speaker CJed, let me jump in here for a second.
Speaker CSpeaking of desserts, when we went to the NBBQA convention last year, I showed you that picture behind me is from there, but they also had the high school kids competing there.
Speaker CAnd one of the things they were doing was making desserts.
Speaker CAnd Leanne and I were eating and arguing our way through the desserts.
Speaker CWhich one was better?
Speaker CBecause I like this little kind of.
Speaker CI don't even know what.
Speaker DSimple.
Speaker DI can't remember what it was.
Speaker CYeah, it was a little.
Speaker CBut it had some strawberries and whipped cream on it, and it was quite sweet.
Speaker CAnd she wanted something else.
Speaker CSo I just kept going back to that one, that one setup.
Speaker CAnd the girls kept giving me more and more strawberry treats.
Speaker CBut if they're anything like that or a couple of levels above that, they're.
Speaker CLook at her.
Speaker CLook at her.
Speaker DI can't even put it into words.
Speaker COkay, okay.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BI got an answer.
Speaker CYou did?
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker DI mean, it was Jack Daniel.
Speaker BOur people are amazingly efficient here.
Speaker BMs. Debbie Christian just hit me back up.
Speaker BYou know how I was saying that we're always trying to make the event bigger and more inclusive as far as family and people coming.
Speaker BThat was the whole premise behind starting it.
Speaker BIt was promotion and community awareness, getting people down here to Jack Daniels and to promote barbecue and to promote the distillery.
Speaker BSo the whole reason for the Jack was to promote those two things was barbecue and community.
Speaker CSo cool.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo I would like to think that we were trying to put our foot into the barbecue game, but it was just to get some good cooks down here to cook for us.
Speaker CThere's nothing wrong with that, Jed.
Speaker CI'm telling you.
Speaker CI'm telling you.
Speaker CWe're going to take a break.
Speaker CWe're going to come back with Jed Lorette and wrap up the show talking about Jack Daniels and the Jack coming up.
Speaker CAnd we will all return just momentarily.
Speaker FNeed a vehicle.
Speaker FDoes it feel hopeless?
Speaker FDid other dealerships already say no because of credit or negative equity?
Speaker FWeston Kia wants to say you yes during the Kia Fall savings event.
Speaker FCome see Weston Kia.
Speaker FOregon's all time leader in Kia sales.
Speaker FJanuary 1994 to December 2025.
Speaker FWeston Kia sold more new Kia than any other Kia dealer or amper.
Speaker FKia Corp.
Speaker EHey, everybody, J.T.
Speaker CHere.
Speaker EI want to tell you about the Hammerstahl knives.
Speaker EHammerstahl combines German steel with beautiful and functioning designs.
Speaker EThey're part of the Heritage Steel Group which also does their pots and pans.
Speaker ESo go heritagesteel us.
Speaker ECheck out the Hammer Stall knives.
Speaker EIf you're really into cooking, I think you're really gonna like them.
Speaker BThis is an encore.
Speaker CWelcome back to Barbecue Nation.
Speaker CWe're very fortunate to have Jed Laurette with us today.
Speaker CJed is from the Jack Daniels Distillery.
Speaker CHe's a branded bastard.
Speaker CHe's a taster.
Speaker CHe's semi serious pork butt cooker.
Speaker CHe's all kinds of things, but he's doing that.
Speaker CAnd I'll get to meet him here in a couple of weeks.
Speaker CThat's kind of fun like that.
Speaker CJed also was served in the Navy and for what, 15 years, something like that.
Speaker BFive years active duty.
Speaker BAnd then I worked for the government for another ten and a half years.
Speaker CAnd then you.
Speaker DThank you for your service.
Speaker BYeah, thank you.
Speaker CAnd then you came to your senses and went home and got a job there?
Speaker BYes, yes, absolutely.
Speaker CWell, that's good.
Speaker CNow I'm only kidding about coming.
Speaker CYeah, it's.
Speaker CIt's all good.
Speaker CDo.
Speaker CI don't know what the corporate structure is.
Speaker CJed on for Jack Daniels there and.
Speaker CBut do the head guys, the guys that we normally think of in suits and ties, do they come down to the competition?
Speaker CDo they hang out?
Speaker CDo they walk around?
Speaker BYou'll see some people, like our Heron company is brown foreman.
Speaker BThey're out of Louisville, Kentucky.
Speaker BAnd you'll see some folks come down from Louisville for the event.
Speaker BOur master distiller, our assistant distiller, folks who work here in Lynchburg, they'll be at the event that night.
Speaker BBut yeah, you'll see out of towners that are corporately part of Jack Daniels show for the event.
Speaker DIs your master distiller a woman?
Speaker BChris Fletcher is our master distiller, but Lexi Phillips is our assistant distiller.
Speaker BShe's the very first female assistant distiller we've ever had.
Speaker DThat's what I thought.
Speaker DI remember hearing that.
Speaker BShe's unbelievable.
Speaker BShe's fourth generation working.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BHer family has a huge legacy at the distillery.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker CSo when you guys have a company party, it's more like a family Christmas get together, isn't it?
Speaker CBecause you've had these families that work so many generations for Jack Daniels, like the Greens, Christie's family and all that.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo, I mean, we have actually a family family picnic once a year here at the distillery.
Speaker BSo on Saturday, we've got a building on the south side of town where we'll bring bounce houses and all kinds of stuff.
Speaker BAnd it really is kind of like a family reunion.
Speaker BEverybody knows everybody, they went to school together, they work together their whole lives.
Speaker BSo, yeah, it's kind of like a family reunion.
Speaker CWow.
Speaker CYeah, that's cool.
Speaker DThat.
Speaker CThat is very cool.
Speaker CI think there should be more of that, if possible, around.
Speaker CSo are you gonna make it down to Byron's party?
Speaker CDo I need to get you on the list there or what?
Speaker BSo you're saying Byron Chisholm?
Speaker CByron Chisholm from Bad Byron's Butt Rub?
Speaker BOh, yeah.
Speaker BWell, if I get an invite.
Speaker BI don't know if I've gotten an invite, to be honest with you.
Speaker DYeah, that sounds.
Speaker BSo if we can make some things happen, that.
Speaker BThat would be.
Speaker CI can.
Speaker CI think we can handle that.
Speaker BI think JT just wants me to.
Speaker BIt's like, all right, Jed, just leave the whiskey.
Speaker BYou can leave now.
Speaker CI'll get you in on the food list.
Speaker CI mean, you know.
Speaker CYeah, it can be.
Speaker CIt can be that way.
Speaker CWell, we're worried.
Speaker CWe Are really looking forward to it.
Speaker CIs there anything you can.
Speaker CI know Leanne has judged the Jack several times, but is there anything that you can say?
Speaker CNow, Leanne, we know you've been here before, but you really need to pay attention to this.
Speaker CAnd I don't mean her judging.
Speaker CI mean anything ancillary outside the judge's.
Speaker BTent as far as what she needs to be aware of.
Speaker CYeah, I mean, you know, how much is bail bonds in Lynchburg?
Speaker CSo.
Speaker BOh, my God.
Speaker BNo, no, you really don't want to meet the sheriff.
Speaker BAlthough I gotta tell you, he's a good guy.
Speaker BHe really is a good guy.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BLook, when you just talking to your guests, when you show up here at Jack, you're going to want to make a trip down to the square, walk through the.
Speaker BThe actual competitors tents area, and then maybe take a tour.
Speaker BGo to Bobo's, get a bite to eat, and be here for the judging and the actual award ceremony for the evening.
Speaker BIf you've been to a small town county fair, it's kind of that same vibe.
Speaker BI'm really hoping we have funnel cake.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BI don't know if we're going to.
Speaker DI'd like to put in a special request.
Speaker DYou guys do the big party on the hill Friday night.
Speaker DAnd last year I was ranting, raving about your fried chicken up there, and I don't think you had fried chicken on that.
Speaker BI'm trying to look and see.
Speaker DSo I hope it's there this year, but I think.
Speaker DYeah, I don't think you had it last year.
Speaker DYou usually have it every year.
Speaker BI think the worst thing that we can do and watch me put my foot in my mouth is have barbecue before the barbecue event.
Speaker BLike serve barbecuers barbecue before they have.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker BSo I don't.
Speaker BI've got a whole list of featured vendors, and I don't have one person doing funnel cake.
Speaker COh, the horror.
Speaker BYeah, don't cry.
Speaker BI think it's going to be all right.
Speaker BI'm a little upset by it, though.
Speaker BLook, jt, I'm a big boy.
Speaker CYou're not talking to shrinking violet here.
Speaker CCome on.
Speaker BMy funnel cake.
Speaker BYeah, it's gonna be.
Speaker BIt's gonna be a blast.
Speaker BIt's always fun.
Speaker BIt really is.
Speaker BAnd we're hoping, we're praying that the rain holds off, or if it's gonna rain, let it rain a couple days ahead of time just to knock the dust down and pull it off a little.
Speaker BBut no, it's.
Speaker BIt's always good.
Speaker BBut for your.
Speaker BFor your listeners, come and See us.
Speaker BWe have amazing offerings here at the distillery.
Speaker BTo go and look around.
Speaker BAnd it's free just to walk through the visitor center.
Speaker BWe got all kinds of stuff for you to look at there.
Speaker DYou know what they do there is, you know this, Jed, but you don't, Jeff, is that they will actually engrave your bottles that you buy and they'll put whatever you want on the bottle for you.
Speaker DSo you can have your own signature.
Speaker BBottle to take as long as it's appropriate.
Speaker BJt.
Speaker CYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker CWell, I think.
Speaker CWatch.
Speaker CWatch this, Jed.
Speaker CI think that little one on my shelf behind me has got some engraving on it.
Speaker CLeanne, didn't you get one of those?
Speaker DNo.
Speaker DWell, no, seriously, though, you can, because I remember having wood chicks put on my bottle and just as a memorabilia piece.
Speaker BOh, it's a great little piece.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CWe could do Barbecue Nation on it, something like that.
Speaker DYeah, you can.
Speaker BOh, absolutely.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker DBut it's kind of in a little house there, and I only heard about it the one time, but for those who are going down there, if you want something like that, you can do that.
Speaker BSo, Leanne, to your question earlier about our latest release, we have a.
Speaker BA fully matured whiskey that we finished in Anejo Tequila Barrel.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker BSo we.
Speaker BWe do have that.
Speaker BIt's our latest distillery offering.
Speaker BWe do have our new bonded rye whiskey that just came out.
Speaker BIt's a brand new offering.
Speaker BWe're not trying to get something out new every year, but we do have some new whiskey.
Speaker BHopefully it'll still be available when y' all come down for the visit in a couple weeks, so.
Speaker DRight.
Speaker DYeah.
Speaker BHard to find rare whiskey.
Speaker CVery good, Jed.
Speaker CLorette from Jack Daniels, and he's got a short title but a long job description and which a lot of people would fight over.
Speaker CJed, thanks.
Speaker CAnd I know you're going to stick around for a couple weeks.
Speaker CYeah.
Speaker CAnd it's going to be fun.
Speaker CThat's going to wrap it up for the regular show.
Speaker CDon't forget, we've got after hours coming up if you're doing the pod version.
Speaker CAnd so we want to thank Jed again and the folks at Jack Daniels and thank Ms. Whippen there, for which I'm going to see in about four days, I think five days.
Speaker CAnd for everybody listening, thank you for being with us.
Speaker CUntil next time, I'm jt.
Speaker CYou're listening to Barbecue Nation, and remember our motto, turn it, don't burn it.
