Speaker BWelcome to Just Breathe.
Speaker CI am so happy you are here and Happy new year.
Speaker CHappy 2024.
Speaker CI hope that your holidays were both restful and magical, which is something I.
Speaker BAlways hope for for myself.
Speaker CI love the holidays.
Speaker BI love having my family home, my.
Speaker CKids home, and we were laughing actually a few weeks ago when they first all came home, how they're learning as.
Speaker BThey move out of the house and.
Speaker CThey meet new people and make new friends, how differently everyone celebrates the holiday season and we're kind of giggling about how we very much still treat it in a lot of ways like they are all under five.
Speaker CSo when I say magical, I really do mean magical.
Speaker CAnd it is kind of fun to.
Speaker BRevert to just feeling like a little.
Speaker CKid and just really enjoying this time of year and this being together in.
Speaker BThe very truest sense.
Speaker BI also hope that if you came.
Speaker CAcross any non affirming people at gatherings, whether it was with family or at work or with friends, that you were.
Speaker BAble to use some of the strategies.
Speaker CFrom the last episode and calmly stand in your truth.
Speaker CI want you to know that I still use the all of these strategies and I was actually so excited to.
Speaker BShare with you all that I had an opportunity to speak my truth, to.
Speaker CUse some of these strategies just a few weeks ago.
Speaker CAnd it was for the very first time in a serious discussion with this particular person that I was able to stay calm, that I was able to stay just really connected to myself and to speak so factually and simply and clearly.
Speaker CAnd even though the conversation in and.
Speaker BOf itself yielded what it yielded was.
Speaker CClarity and confirmation, but it was clarity and confirmation of a fixed mindset that I had hoped would shift over time and just hasn't.
Speaker BBut the fact that I was able to speak my truth and hold my.
Speaker CBoundaries was such a huge win, so I was really, really excited to share that with you, and it was part.
Speaker BOf what really helped me decide what.
Speaker CTo start 2024 with for this podcast, the first episode of the year.
Speaker BI'm really, really excited about not only this episode and what we're talking about.
Speaker CToday, but about what I'm bringing to you this year.
Speaker BIn this podcast, I've made some changes.
Speaker CAs far as what I'm going to produce for you as far as information and growth series, as well as interviews.
Speaker BWith experts on much more targeted subjects.
Speaker CSo really, really looking forward to that.
Speaker CI'm also reaching out for sponsorship partners within organizations that align with the mission.
Speaker BAnd vision of Just Breathe.
Speaker CSo if you know of anyone or.
Speaker BAny organizations that may be a good fit, please let me know or send them my way.
Speaker CSo, considering all of the chaos in the world, discussing allyship felt like a really, really great way to kick off 2024.
Speaker CAnd while what we talk about today will be specific to LGBTQ allyship, consider the other areas of your life in which you can use these tips and strategies.
Speaker CAs our world becomes more accepting of broader and more diverse identities in a lot of ways, in other ways, not so much.
Speaker BIt is crucial, however, for individuals to understand how they can better support the LGBTQ community.
Speaker CBeing an ally is a vital role.
Speaker BThat contributes to creating an inclusive and.
Speaker CSupportive environment for everyone.
Speaker BSo today I want to explore the.
Speaker CSignificance of being an LGBTQ ally, the challenges faced by the community, and very actionable steps you can take to show your solidarity and your advocacy.
Speaker BSo what does it mean to be an LGBTQ ally?
Speaker BWell, it means actively supporting and advocating.
Speaker CFor the rights, the wellbeing and the equality of LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker CAnd I would actually also add to that list.
Speaker CI didn't as I was writing this, but I also want to add equity.
Speaker BIt involves understanding the unique challenges faced.
Speaker CBy the community, educating oneself about LGBTQ issues, and taking action to create a.
Speaker BSafe and inclusive environment.
Speaker BLGBTQ allies play a crucial role in supporting the community.
Speaker BBy standing in solidarity, allies help to.
Speaker CChallenge discrimination in a way that LGBTQ people can't.
Speaker CLGBTQ allies promote acceptance and they help to amplify voices of LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker BAllies provide a supportive network and contribute to the community's overall well being.
Speaker CThe LGBTQ community continues to face numerous challenges, as we all know, and some of these include discrimination, prejudice, inequality.
Speaker CDespite progress in recent years, there are still very significant barriers to overcome discrimination and employment, housing, healthcare and education still.
Speaker BPersist and this affects the daily lives of LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker BAnd their families.
Speaker BTransgender and non binary individuals in particular.
Speaker CFace high rates of violence and discrimination.
Speaker BSo what can we do?
Speaker BWhat can we do as allies?
Speaker CWell, first we can expand our knowledge.
Speaker BAnd be open to knowledge.
Speaker BTo be an effective LGBTQ ally, it.
Speaker CIs essential to educate yourself about the experiences, the history and the struggles of the community.
Speaker CTake some time to explore LGBTQ literature.
Speaker BOr films or documentaries, whatever appeals to.
Speaker CYou and what seems like an interesting way for you to learn and seek.
Speaker BOut resources that provide insights into the.
Speaker CCommunity'S diverse identities and lived experiences.
Speaker CThe resource page on my website is actually a really great place to start because I have.
Speaker CI have lots of options when it.
Speaker BComes to articles, websites, podcasts, documentaries, movies, all of the things.
Speaker CSo start there and then move on from there.
Speaker CYou can also engage in conversations with LGBTQ individuals, you can attend workshops and you can participate in allyship training programs.
Speaker BAll of these, all of these will deepen your understanding.
Speaker CNext, we can challenge our biases.
Speaker CRecognize that everyone has biases and being aware of them is the first step.
Speaker BTowards challenging and overcoming them.
Speaker BReflect on your own beliefs and assumptions.
Speaker CAbout gender and sexuality.
Speaker CQuestion societal norms and stereotypes and actively.
Speaker BWork to dismantle harmful attitudes or prejudices.
Speaker CWithin yourself and then within those around you.
Speaker CI know this can be uncomfortable, but remember, it is something we all need to do.
Speaker CThis isn't a matter of pointing fingers or judging.
Speaker BWe all have biases that we need to unlearn.
Speaker BThird, we can use inclusive language.
Speaker BLanguage plays a crucial role in creating an inclusive environment.
Speaker CUse gender neutral language whenever possible and.
Speaker BRespect individuals chosen pronouns.
Speaker BAvoid making assumptions about someone's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Speaker CIf you are unsure, it is appropriate to ask respectfully ensuring that you do not put the burden of education solely.
Speaker BOn the LGBTQ individual.
Speaker BWith that said, my ally toolkit gives.
Speaker CYou access to the language of LGBTQIA ebook, which is 50 plus pages of education on sexual orientation and gender identity, on gender neutral language, on pronouns, on all of these things that you are potentially unsure about.
Speaker CSo take advantage of this resource that I have for you, that I've put together for you.
Speaker CIt is a really, really great way.
Speaker BTo understand words and topics that may not be native to your way of speaking or understanding.
Speaker BFourth, we can create safe spaces.
Speaker BOne of the most significant contributions an ally can make is to actively create.
Speaker CSafe spaces for LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker BThis involves challenging discriminatory behavior or language.
Speaker CWhen you witness it and promoting an.
Speaker BAtmosphere of respect and acceptance.
Speaker BActively listen to LGBTQ individuals experiences and concerns and be an empathetic and supportive presence in their lives.
Speaker BThis one is particularly important for our kids.
Speaker BKnowing their home is a safe space to authentically explore and express who they.
Speaker CAre can quite literally save their lives.
Speaker CFifth, we can advocate for LGBTQ rights.
Speaker BAdvocacy is a powerful tool for change.
Speaker BUse your voice and platform to advocate for LGBTQ rights and equality.
Speaker BSupport organizations and initiatives that work toward.
Speaker CAdvancing LGBTQ rights and participate in marches, rallies, and events that raise awareness and promote inclusivity.
Speaker CContact your local representatives and urge them to support legislation that protects the rights of LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker BThis one will become even more important as we approach elections within the United.
Speaker CStates later this year.
Speaker BThe next way that we can offer.
Speaker CAllyship is through financial support, which is.
Speaker BCrucial for marginalized LGBTQ individuals who face economic disparities.
Speaker CIf you can contribute to fundraisers, to.
Speaker BCrowdfunding campaigns, and to organizations that assist LGBTQ individuals experiencing homeless, homelessness, healthcare issues.
Speaker COr other financial hardships, remember to prioritize.
Speaker BThe needs of the most marginalized members of the community, such as transgender individuals.
Speaker CPeople of color, and those living in rural areas.
Speaker BNumber seven on the list is listening and learning.
Speaker BA powerful way to be an LGBTQ.
Speaker CAlly is to amplify voices.
Speaker BAmplifying LGBTQ voices requires actively listening to.
Speaker CAnd learning from these individuals within the community.
Speaker BMake an effort to seek out and.
Speaker CSupport LGBTQ artists, authors, activists, and community leaders.
Speaker CAttend LGBTQ events and conferences and workshops to gain insights and perspectives from diverse voices.
Speaker BUse your platform to share their stories and experiences.
Speaker BBe creative as you think of ways.
Speaker CYou may implement this one.
Speaker CPodcasts, local publications, collaborative books, and stories shared on online sources such as Medium are all great options.
Speaker BNumber eight is intersectionality and solidarity.
Speaker BRecognize the intersectionality of identities within the LGBTQ community and the importance of solidarity.
Speaker BStand in solidarity with LGBTQ individuals who face multiple forms of marginalization, including racism.
Speaker CAbleism, or socioeconomic disparities.
Speaker BAdvocate for inclusive policies and practices that address the unique challenges faced by individuals at these intersections.
Speaker BLearn as much as you can about intersectionality.
Speaker BRemember that being an ally means advocating.
Speaker CFor the rights of all LGBTQ individuals.
Speaker BRegardless of their background.
Speaker CFinally, promote LGBTQ representation, visibility and representation matter Support media, entertainment, and publishing industries.
Speaker BThat prioritize LGBTQ representation.
Speaker CEncourage diverse and authentic portrayals of LGBTQ individuals in TV shows, movies, books, and.
Speaker BOther forms of media.
Speaker BCelebrate and uplift queer stories, experiences, and.
Speaker CAchievements, ensuring that LGBTQ individuals feel seen and valued.
Speaker BThe value of our kids being able.
Speaker CTo see themselves represented cannot be overstated.
Speaker BBeing an LGBTQ ally is an ongoing.
Speaker CJourney of education, empathy, and action.
Speaker CIt requires a commitment to understanding the challenges faced by the community, advocating for.
Speaker BTheir rights, and creating inclusive spaces.
Speaker BBy standing in solidarity with LGBTQ individuals, you contribute to a more accepting and equitable society.
Speaker BRemember, allyship is not just a label.
Speaker CBut a lifelong commitment to supporting and.
Speaker BUplifting the LGBTQ community.
Speaker BAs we begin 2024, let's recommit ourselves to being allies in the truest sense.
Speaker BLet's ensure that our actions go beyond performative gestures and lead to meaningful change.
Speaker BTogether.
