was funny.
Speaker:I was thinking about,
Speaker:something that happened
Speaker:earlier on this year, and
Speaker:there's a big part of me
Speaker:that's thinking, holy shit,
Speaker:this year has flown past.
Speaker:And then there's a part
Speaker:of me that's like, holy
Speaker:shit, that was a long
Speaker:time ago, wasn't it?
Speaker:, and then you get to
Speaker:January, February, March,
Speaker:next year, and you're like,
Speaker:we're already in March.
Speaker:Really much.
Speaker:Yeah, it's bizarre.
Speaker:I don't know, everyone
Speaker:has that feeling.
Speaker:And it's probably
Speaker:not just in the
Speaker:construction industry.
Speaker:Hey, um, how have you
Speaker:found this year, Matt?
Speaker:been a very
Speaker:interesting year.
Speaker:I was probably
Speaker:looking back.
Speaker:If I went back through
Speaker:my notes from last year,
Speaker:I was very concerned
Speaker:about this year.
Speaker:So we had a number of
Speaker:projects last year that
Speaker:were meant to go to
Speaker:site and didn't go to
Speaker:site and dropped off.
Speaker:Probably had something very
Speaker:similar again this year.
Speaker:Just, it's very obvious
Speaker:that there's still issues
Speaker:within the industry
Speaker:around pricing and people
Speaker:being scared projects not
Speaker:meeting brief and budget.
Speaker:I think it's maybe we've
Speaker:also got a lot harder and
Speaker:more comfortable with the
Speaker:conversation around that.
Speaker:Those 2 don't meet.
Speaker:So I think there's also,
Speaker:we're getting more leads
Speaker:than we've ever had, but
Speaker:the ones that get through
Speaker:a very well validated.
Speaker:, reckon I agree with that.
Speaker:I understand where
Speaker:the industry is at.
Speaker:So I probably look back at
Speaker:last year's thoughts and
Speaker:thought, Hey, that's what I
Speaker:thought this year would be.
Speaker:I'm going to be very half
Speaker:glass, half full here.
Speaker:And I'm very concerned for
Speaker:next year at some point,
Speaker:but I also, whilst I'm very
Speaker:concerned for next year's
Speaker:in the building industry,
Speaker:I also think there's
Speaker:a lot of opportunity.
Speaker:And I think as our
Speaker:industry, we're just
Speaker:going to have to pivot.
Speaker:There's going to be huge
Speaker:changes to our industry
Speaker:next year as builders
Speaker:with the VBA changing
Speaker:under one banner.
Speaker:There's probably going
Speaker:to be insurance changes.
Speaker:How that looks like.
Speaker:We can probably look at New
Speaker:South Wales and Queensland,
Speaker:but there's going to be
Speaker:big changes for us as
Speaker:builders in a positive way.
Speaker:this year, this year's
Speaker:been challenging.
Speaker:I won't lie.
Speaker:Like we haven't had
Speaker:as many projects
Speaker:start as we wanted to.
Speaker:We had two to three
Speaker:projects all meant to
Speaker:start mid year that
Speaker:just got delayed.
Speaker:Two of them due to our
Speaker:good friends at Cancel.
Speaker:So we did have
Speaker:challenges with that.
Speaker:But I got to start
Speaker:my own house.
Speaker:That's a huge positive.
Speaker:how about yourself?
Speaker:Before I answer that
Speaker:question, if you're
Speaker:listening to this, which
Speaker:I think is going to be
Speaker:towards the end of this
Speaker:calendar year, so you would
Speaker:have finished off for the
Speaker:year and you would have
Speaker:had Christmas and hopefully
Speaker:you're enjoying some time
Speaker:away from work with family
Speaker:and friends and you're
Speaker:a little bit relaxed.
Speaker:If you're still standing
Speaker:now at the end of this
Speaker:year, I think you need to
Speaker:give yourself a massive
Speaker:fucking pat on the back
Speaker:because , Sanctum Homes
Speaker:has turned 10 this year,
Speaker:which is pretty incredible.
Speaker:I've actually
Speaker:forgot to celebrate
Speaker:that, 10 this year.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:And I look back on the
Speaker:last three or four years.
Speaker:So that COVID period, , and
Speaker:I think that COVID was
Speaker:challenging, but if I'm
Speaker:being honest with you
Speaker:all, I actually think
Speaker:this year's probably
Speaker:been the most challenging
Speaker:for me personally.
Speaker:2, 832 construction
Speaker:companies went
Speaker:insolvent during the
Speaker:last financial year.
Speaker:So going on your point
Speaker:of being here is very,
Speaker:a very big thing.
Speaker:if you are listening,
Speaker:and if you did decide to
Speaker:close your doors in your
Speaker:business, right, don't
Speaker:feel bad about that.
Speaker:That's a, I I think that's
Speaker:in some cases a really
Speaker:good choice, I think
Speaker:it's a really challenging
Speaker:industry to be in.
Speaker:And if you decided that
Speaker:it's not the path that
Speaker:you want to take, then
Speaker:fucking power to you.
Speaker:That's awesome.
Speaker:But if you're standing here
Speaker:at the end of the year and
Speaker:you think to yourself, I'd
Speaker:like to have been a little
Speaker:bit more profitable, but if
Speaker:you're still made a little
Speaker:bit of profit, then give
Speaker:yourself a big fucking pat
Speaker:on the back because that
Speaker:is incredible because our
Speaker:industry at this point in
Speaker:time is very challenging.
Speaker:Now given the
Speaker:circumstances, I think
Speaker:we've been Really
Speaker:successful this year.
Speaker:Is it how I'd
Speaker:imagined it to be?
Speaker:Absolutely not, but I've
Speaker:kind of recalibrated my
Speaker:brain of where I wanted to
Speaker:be at the end of the year.
Speaker:And I'm really
Speaker:proud of myself.
Speaker:The middle of the year was
Speaker:really, really challenging
Speaker:for me personally.
Speaker:I had a total of five
Speaker:houses that we handed over.
Speaker:One of them was a
Speaker:two unit development.
Speaker:And that was all in
Speaker:an eight week period.
Speaker:We were actually then
Speaker:staring down the barrel
Speaker:of projects actually
Speaker:not being signed up
Speaker:yet after these ones.
Speaker:And that was due to, we had
Speaker:five projects fall off from
Speaker:Christmas last year through
Speaker:to the middle of the year.
Speaker:It's scary, hey?
Speaker:It's so
Speaker:scary.
Speaker:these projects that we're
Speaker:dealing with, we gave our
Speaker:first round of costing
Speaker:probably late 2022.
Speaker:And that's, it's took,
Speaker:it taken us that long
Speaker:to then go through
Speaker:council, get updated
Speaker:documentation and get
Speaker:revised costings together.
Speaker:Now, during that time,
Speaker:we'd seen whatever
Speaker:percentage of building
Speaker:costs increase and the
Speaker:projects just didn't become
Speaker:viable for the clients.
Speaker:And we totally
Speaker:understood that.
Speaker:That's fine.
Speaker:We get it.
Speaker:But it does, it make
Speaker:it really difficult
Speaker:for us to plan.
Speaker:So that's probably been
Speaker:the biggest challenge
Speaker:for us this year.
Speaker:tough, hey?
Speaker:Like, you're kind of trying
Speaker:to hold these spots, you're
Speaker:trying to shift them,
Speaker:you're trying to be like,
Speaker:mm, I think it's going
Speaker:to start in November,
Speaker:but actually probably
Speaker:more realistically, it's
Speaker:going to be January on,
Speaker:but what if they want
Speaker:to come forward and then
Speaker:all of a sudden, that
Speaker:project's not viable,
Speaker:it's way over budget.
Speaker:It's such a hard thing.
Speaker:And then they want
Speaker:to start then.
Speaker:Bang, let's start now.
Speaker:it's really difficult.
Speaker:So I mean, if there
Speaker:are clients out there
Speaker:listening, it's really
Speaker:challenging at the moment
Speaker:to actually plan where
Speaker:you're, when your project's
Speaker:going to start, think we
Speaker:do a really great job of
Speaker:communicating this to our
Speaker:clients throughout the
Speaker:pre construction phase
Speaker:my biggest philosophy
Speaker:is if you don't plan,
Speaker:you're planning to fail.
Speaker:Even if we know that
Speaker:that time slot or
Speaker:whatever is going to be
Speaker:moving, at least it's
Speaker:on your construction
Speaker:program somewhere.
Speaker:we have still had some
Speaker:projects that we knew
Speaker:were going to get to site.
Speaker:That were really positive
Speaker:and we'd gone through
Speaker:costings and we're just
Speaker:finalizing documentation.
Speaker:And thankfully they dropped
Speaker:for us, which was awesome.
Speaker:but you know what, by
Speaker:the time this podcast is
Speaker:aired, we would have signed
Speaker:another three contracts
Speaker:before the end of the year.
Speaker:And we're also looking
Speaker:at another two to three
Speaker:to sign in the first
Speaker:quarter next year.
Speaker:Yeah, that's good.
Speaker:That's strong.
Speaker:a lot better than where
Speaker:I'm at at the moment.
Speaker:our pipeline is really
Speaker:strong the projects
Speaker:that dropped off and
Speaker:the new projects that
Speaker:have now come through.
Speaker:I feel that clients
Speaker:expectations on costs
Speaker:has been recalibrated
Speaker:to the new normal.
Speaker:So, you know, when we
Speaker:start talking about,
Speaker:very high level.
Speaker:Cost per square meter.
Speaker:I don't want to
Speaker:go into that.
Speaker:It's a whole other bloody
Speaker:topic, but clients are
Speaker:understanding of that.
Speaker:And they, like,
Speaker:they get it.
Speaker:They understand that
Speaker:they're going to be
Speaker:spending more than
Speaker:they were hoping to
Speaker:spend two years ago.
Speaker:But yeah, this year has
Speaker:been very challenging.
Speaker:Probably, Probably
Speaker:one of my hardest
Speaker:years in business,
Speaker:if I'm being honest.
Speaker:Yeah, and the challenge
Speaker:is we kind of saw them
Speaker:coming, but they're
Speaker:still unexpected.
Speaker:So those projects dropping
Speaker:off, it really plays
Speaker:with your mental health.
Speaker:And it's just like
Speaker:this rollercoaster.
Speaker:And I find that when
Speaker:everything happens,
Speaker:it happens at once.
Speaker:So all the shit news
Speaker:happens in a three,
Speaker:four week period.
Speaker:And then all the
Speaker:good news comes five,
Speaker:six weeks later.
Speaker:just up and down,
Speaker:up and down.
Speaker:And you're just like,
Speaker:there's no stat,
Speaker:there's no stability.
Speaker:I feel being a
Speaker:builder at the moment.
Speaker:And I spoke about recently
Speaker:being involved and being
Speaker:involved, but they're
Speaker:two different things and
Speaker:you've got to be really,
Speaker:I think you're going to
Speaker:have to be really, really
Speaker:involved to keep that
Speaker:project on, on budget.
Speaker:And it's something that's
Speaker:actually we're completely
Speaker:flipping about flipping our
Speaker:pre con pricing structure
Speaker:at the moment and how we're
Speaker:going to estimate a job.
Speaker:Um, It's something
Speaker:that I've got in
Speaker:the back of my head.
Speaker:We're sort of playing
Speaker:with it right now, but I
Speaker:think just what everyone's
Speaker:been doing for the last
Speaker:few years is everyone's
Speaker:getting involved in this
Speaker:pre con phase, but then are
Speaker:they doing it or they just
Speaker:are they doing it because
Speaker:everyone else is doing it
Speaker:or they're doing it because
Speaker:they actually know what
Speaker:they're talking about.
Speaker:And now this is a huge
Speaker:oversaturation of everyone
Speaker:doing the same thing and
Speaker:I think sometimes when
Speaker:people talk about their
Speaker:numbers and stuff , they're
Speaker:not educated themselves
Speaker:enough on the numbers or
Speaker:they don't know how to
Speaker:talk about the numbers,
Speaker:then they get lost.
Speaker:But let's remove ourselves
Speaker:in some of the, maybe
Speaker:the negative things.
Speaker:Is there anything like
Speaker:a good skill or habit
Speaker:you developed this year
Speaker:that you're just like
Speaker:running with for next year
Speaker:totally.
Speaker:Um, my cadence with
Speaker:my psychologist is
Speaker:about every four weeks.
Speaker:And it's interesting,
Speaker:one four week session,
Speaker:I'd be high as a kite.
Speaker:The second one,
Speaker:I'd be really low.
Speaker:And the thing that
Speaker:really helped me
Speaker:through, this year.
Speaker:Was her words in my ear
Speaker:saying, Hey, you know what?
Speaker:You've got this, you've
Speaker:been through this before.
Speaker:What's the worst case
Speaker:scenario and how do
Speaker:you feel about that?
Speaker:And know that it's not
Speaker:going to get there and
Speaker:know that you're going to
Speaker:be a lot closer to a more
Speaker:positive outcome than a
Speaker:really negative outcome.
Speaker:there was another moment
Speaker:too my office at my house.
Speaker:It's a little work site
Speaker:office that I've got
Speaker:away from the house.
Speaker:I remember passing
Speaker:my wife on down the
Speaker:driveway and during
Speaker:a pretty intense day.
Speaker:freaky time where we were
Speaker:really, we had projects
Speaker:that were getting handed
Speaker:over and we, waiting to
Speaker:get some contracts signed.
Speaker:And I kind of just made
Speaker:a comment saying, don't
Speaker:want you to stress.
Speaker:And she turned around
Speaker:to me and said, I'm
Speaker:not stressed at all.
Speaker:I know you've got this.
Speaker:You've always made it
Speaker:through this stuff before,
Speaker:and you thrive in these
Speaker:kinds of situations.
Speaker:And it was actually the
Speaker:words that I needed to
Speaker:hear at that particular
Speaker:moment in time that just
Speaker:gave me the confidence
Speaker:to just go right, I do
Speaker:fucking have this and
Speaker:we're gonna make it work.
Speaker:I think you said, Oh,
Speaker:at some point, I think
Speaker:you've spoken about it
Speaker:on this podcast, but.
Speaker:it's a, that never ending
Speaker:game within mental health.
Speaker:Like you hit a new
Speaker:level and you got
Speaker:to keep going again.
Speaker:You got to keep
Speaker:going again.
Speaker:Is that sort of what
Speaker:you've been doing?
Speaker:You just, you've got
Speaker:this huge arsenal of
Speaker:weapons behind you to
Speaker:throw out some issues.
Speaker:have you just realized
Speaker:to use them better and
Speaker:now you just become
Speaker:more aware of them?
Speaker:So therefore you go again.
Speaker:Yeah, I'm gonna answer that
Speaker:question in maybe a little
Speaker:bit of a roundabout way.
Speaker:And I think I've talked
Speaker:about this before.
Speaker:I actually think that the
Speaker:biggest thing that has
Speaker:held me together the most
Speaker:this year is the little
Speaker:training group that I have
Speaker:that come to my home and
Speaker:train anywhere between
Speaker:three to four times a week.
Speaker:And now this works for me.
Speaker:I'm not saying that
Speaker:everyone needs to do
Speaker:this, but this was the
Speaker:one thing in my life
Speaker:that was consistent all
Speaker:year that was really
Speaker:predictable for me.
Speaker:I knew that I'd train and
Speaker:at the end of that training
Speaker:session, I would feel good.
Speaker:Really simple
Speaker:equation for me.
Speaker:Now those little pep
Speaker:ups, three to four
Speaker:times a week allowed me
Speaker:to then face the day.
Speaker:even if I knew I had a
Speaker:shit day ahead of me.
Speaker:So that's one thing.
Speaker:It was the exercise,
Speaker:but it was also the
Speaker:connections that I had
Speaker:with these people as well.
Speaker:So it's all men in
Speaker:this group and we're
Speaker:all middle aged.
Speaker:I can't believe I'm
Speaker:saying I'm middle aged,
Speaker:but I am north of 40 now.
Speaker:Uh, Don't laugh, Matt.
Speaker:You know, we're middle
Speaker:aged men with careers and
Speaker:we're business owners and
Speaker:family and we've got kids
Speaker:and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker:But we get really
Speaker:vulnerable with each other
Speaker:and we're really deep.
Speaker:We connect on a deep
Speaker:emotional level with
Speaker:each other and we
Speaker:support each other.
Speaker:And it might be one week
Speaker:that my mate's sitting
Speaker:there talking about how
Speaker:hard it is that he's now
Speaker:a single dad and he's,
Speaker:, things really are really
Speaker:hard or it might be that
Speaker:I'm really struggling
Speaker:because I really need to
Speaker:get a contract signed,
Speaker:but it's actually talking
Speaker:about it and verbalizing
Speaker:it and then know that
Speaker:I've got these people
Speaker:in my fucking corner
Speaker:to support me through
Speaker:with whatever happens,
Speaker:celebrate the highs or,
Speaker:be there sitting next
Speaker:to me and supporting
Speaker:me when shit is low.
Speaker:this is probably a really
Speaker:good segue onto one thing
Speaker:I want to talk about and
Speaker:it's called relationships.
Speaker:one of the biggest things
Speaker:that I've learned this
Speaker:year I've already known
Speaker:this, that our competitors
Speaker:are not our competitors,
Speaker:they're friends.
Speaker:We have an awesome group of
Speaker:builders that we surround
Speaker:ourselves with and have
Speaker:a great chat with, a
Speaker:little text message group.
Speaker:The one thing that I've
Speaker:learned, and it's probably
Speaker:one thing that I'm going
Speaker:to encourage anyone,
Speaker:whether you're a building
Speaker:designer, an architect, a
Speaker:builder, create yourself
Speaker:a group with people
Speaker:that are like minded.
Speaker:That you can lean on.
Speaker:So hypothetically,
Speaker:architect, surround
Speaker:yourself with a big
Speaker:group of architects and
Speaker:get to know each other
Speaker:very, very well and start
Speaker:to share information.
Speaker:It's probably been
Speaker:one of the biggest
Speaker:things for me this year
Speaker:getting through it.
Speaker:Like, so many times that
Speaker:I've had to call one
Speaker:of those people in that
Speaker:group to get advice.
Speaker:Like, we don't
Speaker:know everything.
Speaker:Um, we're totally
Speaker:okay with that.
Speaker:, the relationships that
Speaker:I've built and built
Speaker:on further are really
Speaker:gonna help me long term.
Speaker:what you think on that
Speaker:group, because I think
Speaker:it's really, really
Speaker:important that, people
Speaker:reach out
Speaker:it's kind of almost the
Speaker:same vibe, isn't it?
Speaker:And, And I know Sven talked
Speaker:about this when we had
Speaker:him on a few podcasts ago.
Speaker:If you haven't listened
Speaker:to it, definitely
Speaker:check it out.
Speaker:It's awesome.
Speaker:Just creating those
Speaker:connections with people.
Speaker:We as human beings
Speaker:need connection.
Speaker:we thrive off
Speaker:other human beings.
Speaker:that group's incredible
Speaker:because we've actually
Speaker:got such a broad range
Speaker:of builders in there.
Speaker:And we're also open with
Speaker:the challenges that we're
Speaker:having and the successes
Speaker:that we're having.
Speaker:And
Speaker:we, I know at the moment
Speaker:we're sort of helping
Speaker:one of the members
Speaker:of that group through
Speaker:a tricky situation.
Speaker:I know you, me, Brad
Speaker:have been chatting with
Speaker:this person individually
Speaker:and, really helping them
Speaker:through a tricky stage.
Speaker:And I know from her mouth.
Speaker:that it's been so
Speaker:incredibly beneficial
Speaker:for her knowing that
Speaker:she's got the support.
Speaker:And do you know what, we
Speaker:might not be solving the
Speaker:problems for her, but the
Speaker:fact that they know that
Speaker:we've got, that, that
Speaker:they've got a the support
Speaker:of other people who have
Speaker:been through certain stuff
Speaker:has been so important.
Speaker:Yeah, it's the ability for
Speaker:them to vent, and something
Speaker:that the other people in
Speaker:the group can understand.
Speaker:Like, I can talk to my wife
Speaker:about all these things,
Speaker:but when I want to talk
Speaker:on a building level, while
Speaker:she understands it, she
Speaker:does her best to, like,
Speaker:really understand it, and
Speaker:she's super switched on.
Speaker:But sometimes it's just
Speaker:issues that I can't talk
Speaker:to anyone else other
Speaker:than a builder, because
Speaker:they just don't get it.
Speaker:And you know what, on
Speaker:that, like your significant
Speaker:other, they get a lot
Speaker:of you all the time.
Speaker:And it's almost unfair to
Speaker:be dumping so much of that
Speaker:stuff on them all the time,
Speaker:because, okay, I know in
Speaker:my situation, my wife he
Speaker:works, we've got two young
Speaker:kids, we've got a dog,
Speaker:we've got a household to
Speaker:take care of together.
Speaker:She doesn't need all the
Speaker:bullshit that I go through
Speaker:in my life every day.
Speaker:She's certainly there for
Speaker:support, but she doesn't
Speaker:need that mental load.
Speaker:She's got her own.
Speaker:, 100%.
Speaker:not that I'm hiding
Speaker:it, I'd rather not put
Speaker:that burden on because
Speaker:I can tell you about it.
Speaker:It's not going to
Speaker:stress you out because
Speaker:you're like, I've
Speaker:been through that.
Speaker:I know what happens here.
Speaker:Where I'm maybe still
Speaker:in that unknown and
Speaker:I don't want to have
Speaker:that unknown on her.
Speaker:think in summary, if I was
Speaker:to kind of look back at
Speaker:this year and think of how
Speaker:I've got through it, it
Speaker:is definitely with support
Speaker:of all my peers, whether
Speaker:that be my wife and family.
Speaker:whether that be our group
Speaker:or whether that be, you
Speaker:know, my training group.
Speaker:Without all of them,
Speaker:all or any of them, I
Speaker:probably wouldn't be
Speaker:sitting here with a
Speaker:glass half full kind of
Speaker:mentality into next year.
Speaker:100%.
Speaker:Like, I know that we're
Speaker:going to be fine next year.
Speaker:I know that we're doing
Speaker:things that are different,
Speaker:that we're putting
Speaker:ourselves out there.
Speaker:We're not quiet
Speaker:about certain things.
Speaker:And that, and naturally,
Speaker:it's like, if you care,
Speaker:it's generally going
Speaker:to pay off for you,
Speaker:no matter what you do.
Speaker:And if you go, if you
Speaker:really take the effort to
Speaker:do more and be better and
Speaker:learn, it naturally comes.
Speaker:I personally believe,
Speaker:and again, this is just
Speaker:my opinion, that there
Speaker:is a whole bunch of
Speaker:latent demand that's just
Speaker:sitting there waiting.
Speaker:And I think, again,
Speaker:my opinion, I know
Speaker:nothing about nothing.
Speaker:I know, I know a lot
Speaker:of things about a lot
Speaker:of things, but I'm not
Speaker:an expert on anything
Speaker:except high performance
Speaker:times, allegedly.
Speaker:I think if we see an
Speaker:interest rate drop
Speaker:next year and we have a
Speaker:little bit of consumer
Speaker:confidence come back
Speaker:into, general living,
Speaker:we're going to see a big
Speaker:uptick in construction,
Speaker:across the board.
Speaker:I think that whilst
Speaker:there's going to be huge
Speaker:changes to the industry
Speaker:from regulation point in
Speaker:Victoria, that's going to
Speaker:be positive, especially if
Speaker:it comes at the same time
Speaker:as an interest rate drop.
Speaker:Because it's going
Speaker:to get rid of the
Speaker:people, which is fine.
Speaker:And it also takes the
Speaker:stress off people's
Speaker:bank accounts.
Speaker:And the hardest ones
Speaker:to define, we're
Speaker:finding to get the
Speaker:site, which is probably
Speaker:the U is that is once
Speaker:between 800, 000 and 1.
Speaker:2.
Speaker:It's a really difficult
Speaker:spot to be in because
Speaker:it's a lot of money.
Speaker:I agree.
Speaker:just on the money thing,
Speaker:know everyone's got
Speaker:their expectations of
Speaker:their ideal project and
Speaker:their ideal clients.
Speaker:I think maybe cast
Speaker:the net a bit further.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:We've been doing it from
Speaker:a geography point of
Speaker:view is casting a net
Speaker:a little bit further.
Speaker:And we're actually looking
Speaker:at projects that may or may
Speaker:not generally be typical to
Speaker:what we would normally do.
Speaker:Now there's a couple
Speaker:of big things for us
Speaker:that we still look for.
Speaker:Got to have great
Speaker:relationships
Speaker:with our clients.
Speaker:That's really
Speaker:important for me.
Speaker:They also need to be
Speaker:priced really well.
Speaker:So if it's a 200, 000
Speaker:job or it's a 4 million
Speaker:project, we still want
Speaker:to price it really well.
Speaker:So we know that my business
Speaker:is going to be profitable.
Speaker:I think, people don't
Speaker:understand that the
Speaker:business and the project
Speaker:needs to be profitable.
Speaker:And I think that's
Speaker:something that gets really
Speaker:it's a really big pet
Speaker:hate of mine because at
Speaker:the end of the day what
Speaker:we're doing is a business.
Speaker:reality is they
Speaker:need to make money.
Speaker:Otherwise you become
Speaker:that statistic.
Speaker:I think it's a very
Speaker:valid point you make.
Speaker:If a builder goes broke,
Speaker:trust me when I say the
Speaker:homeowner does not win.
Speaker:Anything but like there is
Speaker:only a certain percentage
Speaker:that the home warranty
Speaker:insurance covers So you
Speaker:will be out of pocket.
Speaker:You want your builder
Speaker:to be making a profit
Speaker:Playing themselves and the
Speaker:company making a profit.
Speaker:It needs to be a win for
Speaker:the client It needs to be
Speaker:a win for the architect.
Speaker:It needs to be a win
Speaker:for the builder That's
Speaker:how you should be
Speaker:thinking about the
Speaker:success of your project.
Speaker:100%.
Speaker:yeah, 100%.
Speaker:I couldn't, I honestly
Speaker:couldn't agree
Speaker:more.
Speaker:I think people are going to
Speaker:need to be really creative
Speaker:with their marketing next
Speaker:year to make a noise.
Speaker:I think we've seen
Speaker:some reasonably similar
Speaker:marketing campaigns that
Speaker:have been coming out across
Speaker:the industry at the moment.
Speaker:And I think that's fine.
Speaker:I think things go in waves,
Speaker:but I, my opinion, and I've
Speaker:been thinking about this.
Speaker:Is how do we get that
Speaker:edge, that diff, that
Speaker:point of difference.
Speaker:And I challenge everyone
Speaker:listening right now to
Speaker:really think about it
Speaker:while you're sitting down,
Speaker:having that Negroni or
Speaker:beer or, or peeps normal
Speaker:over the Christmas break
Speaker:about how are you going
Speaker:to get your message out
Speaker:to people this year?
Speaker:That is different to
Speaker:the person next to you.
Speaker:And I know you
Speaker:and I, talked about,
Speaker:competition about how
Speaker:we try and market,
Speaker:and that's fun.
Speaker:Cause I love it.
Speaker:I'm really curious to
Speaker:see and excited to see
Speaker:how people position
Speaker:themselves next year.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think marketing, it's a
Speaker:huge point of difference.
Speaker:Maybe I'm biased cause
Speaker:that's what my life does.
Speaker:So I, and I do get a
Speaker:leg up with some ideas
Speaker:and stuff like that.
Speaker:I think again it comes
Speaker:down to being creative
Speaker:and you've got to do
Speaker:something different.
Speaker:You can't just like,
Speaker:there's a lot of the
Speaker:same stuff going on and a
Speaker:lot of copying going on.
Speaker:You've got to really think
Speaker:outside the square on
Speaker:you can get your message
Speaker:across that what we do
Speaker:is different and what
Speaker:we're doing is better.
Speaker:I've already got a whole
Speaker:list of things written
Speaker:down on what we're
Speaker:going to do and approach
Speaker:things in a completely
Speaker:different way.
Speaker:Let's face it with, the
Speaker:copying stuff, right?
Speaker:We've all copied before.
Speaker:We've All
Speaker:taken an idea
Speaker:from someone and
Speaker:all
Speaker:somewhere.
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:somewhere.
Speaker:Nothing's a hundred percent
Speaker:unique, but, um, I'm
Speaker:really excited to see how.
Speaker:Everyone next year
Speaker:positions themselves in
Speaker:the market and gets the
Speaker:message out to tell people
Speaker:how they do things, why
Speaker:they're different, why
Speaker:they should be chosen.
Speaker:Like, I'm excited
Speaker:to see that.
Speaker:I think the copying
Speaker:needs to come from other
Speaker:industries, not within
Speaker:industry we have ourselves.
Speaker:I think that's probably
Speaker:where I refer to copying
Speaker:is that you've got to
Speaker:look at what other people
Speaker:are potentially doing
Speaker:in other industries like
Speaker:Coke or, I know it's
Speaker:just an example because
Speaker:I've got a can of Coke
Speaker:sitting in front of me,
Speaker:but something like that,
Speaker:like what are they doing
Speaker:that you could somehow
Speaker:twist to work for you?
Speaker:That's probably
Speaker:what
Speaker:I mean of, yeah,
Speaker:there was a podcast small
Speaker:business, big marketing.
Speaker:And every single time
Speaker:I listened to one
Speaker:of those episodes.
Speaker:I got something out of it.
Speaker:It was not related
Speaker:to building at all.
Speaker:I'm like, oh,
Speaker:that's a great idea.
Speaker:That's a really great idea.
Speaker:Thinking outside the box.
Speaker:But my take on
Speaker:next year is this.
Speaker:I think it's still going
Speaker:to have its challenges.
Speaker:Like every year
Speaker:has its challenges.
Speaker:What's your biggest
Speaker:challenge going to be
Speaker:next year you think?
Speaker:I think it's going to be
Speaker:a similar to this year and
Speaker:I think cost is going to
Speaker:be a big challenge still.
Speaker:I think cost is still going
Speaker:to be a big challenge.
Speaker:I 100 percent agree.
Speaker:I think it's just getting,
Speaker:I think it's introducing
Speaker:that confidence back around
Speaker:cost and I'd say we're
Speaker:probably both lucky we're
Speaker:a year ahead of maybe
Speaker:everyone and confident with
Speaker:those things where we're
Speaker:very confident to have
Speaker:that conversation straight
Speaker:up around cost and we've
Speaker:got some tools that we
Speaker:know not many other people
Speaker:use and we haven't really
Speaker:shared them with you with
Speaker:anyone but we know that
Speaker:people are going to start
Speaker:to find these tools and
Speaker:utilize them but it's then
Speaker:that's going from there.
Speaker:We are all the sum of
Speaker:all our experiences,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:So we've got through COVID.
Speaker:We've got through the
Speaker:last couple of years,
Speaker:which have been tricky.
Speaker:become more resilient to
Speaker:things as they come at us.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:I think I couldn't have
Speaker:done this year without
Speaker:the experience of going
Speaker:through COVID the couple of
Speaker:years before.
Speaker:I'd actually love to do
Speaker:an episode one day on what
Speaker:if COVID didn't happen.
Speaker:What's it?
Speaker:Yeah, I see.
Speaker:a really interesting point.
Speaker:I never thought about it,
Speaker:but this is sort of goes
Speaker:back to a point I was
Speaker:saying before, if you're
Speaker:listening to this today
Speaker:and you're sitting down
Speaker:and you're still here and
Speaker:you're kind of happy where
Speaker:you're at and you've got
Speaker:work coming up next year,
Speaker:that's really positive.
Speaker:This is a really
Speaker:great thing.
Speaker:Use all your experience
Speaker:in the last four years
Speaker:to know, you know what, I
Speaker:fucking got this and next
Speaker:year, yes, there's going
Speaker:to have its challenges.
Speaker:I'm pretty confident
Speaker:that next year is
Speaker:going to be, is going
Speaker:to have more rainbows,
Speaker:I think the anxiety
Speaker:might start to dwindle
Speaker:off a little bit
Speaker:around that industry.
Speaker:And that's what I'd
Speaker:be very, very happy
Speaker:if it happened.
Speaker:it has a, there's
Speaker:a bit of a stigma
Speaker:around, some of the big
Speaker:players going bankrupt.
Speaker:I think that
Speaker:stabilizes some of
Speaker:those bigger players,
Speaker:It
Speaker:doesn't affect
Speaker:what we do though.
Speaker:different industry though.
Speaker:it's still permeates
Speaker:through though.
Speaker:I mean, the fact
Speaker:that Metricon's now
Speaker:being bought out.
Speaker:I think it's a really
Speaker:great stabilizer
Speaker:for the industry.
Speaker:And I know there's some
Speaker:other volume builders
Speaker:who have also had some
Speaker:investments into them.
Speaker:Now, again, I can't speak
Speaker:too much to it cause I
Speaker:don't know enough about
Speaker:it, but my opinion is when
Speaker:you've got confidence over
Speaker:there, That confidence then
Speaker:spreads into our market.
Speaker:So, so these volume
Speaker:builders that are still
Speaker:here now, they can ride
Speaker:a few more waves before
Speaker:they're going to crash
Speaker:and burn, which I think
Speaker:is a positive thing.
Speaker:And hopefully in the
Speaker:next two to three years,
Speaker:we're going to see things
Speaker:stabilize even more.
Speaker:I don't think we
Speaker:see prices drop off.
Speaker:That's one thing I
Speaker:don't think happens.
Speaker:I think that they stay
Speaker:around where they are
Speaker:and they just continue
Speaker:on the inflation road
Speaker:like previous to COVID.
Speaker:don't disagree with that.
Speaker:I'd like to think that
Speaker:maybe it might get a little
Speaker:bit more competitive, but,
Speaker:um, I don't, I don't
Speaker:see it drastically
Speaker:dropping off.
Speaker:It's not dropping the
Speaker:50 percent and it's
Speaker:gone
Speaker:Nah.
Speaker:Oh, fuck no.
Speaker:Oh, hell no.
Speaker:No, no, no, no,
Speaker:no, not at all.
Speaker:Not at all.
Speaker:But do you have any
Speaker:big challenges that you
Speaker:personally will think
Speaker:you'll face next year?
Speaker:Like it is in like,
Speaker:not just about work.
Speaker:Is there any difficult,
Speaker:like is there things
Speaker:that are gonna be
Speaker:exciting for you
Speaker:Yeah, I mean, like,
Speaker:personally, we've
Speaker:got some really great
Speaker:positive things happening.
Speaker:You know, I've got, my,
Speaker:my youngest Phoenix.
Speaker:He has recently been
Speaker:diagnosed with autism
Speaker:which is a really positive
Speaker:thing for us because now
Speaker:we're armed with some
Speaker:really amazing tools
Speaker:to help him through,
Speaker:Potential challenges.
Speaker:we've got a planning
Speaker:permit up for our barn,
Speaker:which is super exciting.
Speaker:advertising
Speaker:comes off today.
Speaker:Oh, so how do we reject it?
Speaker:No one can listen to
Speaker:this and reject it?
Speaker:It's
Speaker:too late to go on by then?
Speaker:Oh, please don't reject it.
Speaker:Have you had any
Speaker:rejections so far?
Speaker:Do you know?
Speaker:No, no.
Speaker:We've got some
Speaker:really great names.
Speaker:think next year is going
Speaker:to have its challenges
Speaker:like every year, but, um,
Speaker:I'm, I'm pretty excited
Speaker:about 2025 and I'm so
Speaker:excited about what you
Speaker:and I are planning for the
Speaker:mindful builder podcast.
Speaker:Yeah, I think we've
Speaker:got some We're going
Speaker:to be doing some things
Speaker:very differently.
Speaker:We're getting a studio.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:We're gonna be cool.
Speaker:So we're gonna do
Speaker:these in person now.
Speaker:We're gonna head to a
Speaker:lot more video content
Speaker:where Hamish and I have
Speaker:been discussing YouTube
Speaker:and utilizing YouTube.
Speaker:So, what that looks like
Speaker:at the moment, we're gonna
Speaker:catch up post Christmas
Speaker:and have a good chat.
Speaker:One thing I will ask
Speaker:if you do have a very,
Speaker:very interesting project
Speaker:that you would like
Speaker:to be filmed, please
Speaker:reach out and they
Speaker:need to be different.
Speaker:They just can't be, hey,
Speaker:we're wrapping a house
Speaker:and installing a window,
Speaker:like we want them quirky.
Speaker:They need, we want details
Speaker:that are not traditional.
Speaker:So please, if you have
Speaker:something that you think is
Speaker:different to anything else
Speaker:and I'll use, for example,
Speaker:my retrofit rifle project,
Speaker:that's what we're after.
Speaker:That's the type of project
Speaker:we want something that
Speaker:doesn't have to be a
Speaker:Passive House, by the way.
Speaker:it just needs to fit the
Speaker:building better category.
Speaker:And we, we'd love to
Speaker:hear from you and get
Speaker:out and do some filming,
Speaker:some type of videos,
Speaker:and just get you to walk
Speaker:through the project and
Speaker:explain what you're doing.
Speaker:We want to build
Speaker:this community.
Speaker:And we want to provide
Speaker:better building advice,
Speaker:but also keep linking
Speaker:back to that mental
Speaker:health side of things.
Speaker:I know Hamish and I
Speaker:have got some work to do
Speaker:on our why about this.
Speaker:Um, we've got some
Speaker:collaborators we're hoping
Speaker:to bring along, so it's not
Speaker:just going to be listening
Speaker:to us two all the time.
Speaker:some crowd
Speaker:favorites, some crowd
Speaker:favorites.
Speaker:yeah, we can't tell you
Speaker:who they are yet but we're
Speaker:doing some things that
Speaker:we're really going to grow.
Speaker:And I'm super excited.
Speaker:I think if we look back,
Speaker:like we've been told we're
Speaker:in the top 5 percent of
Speaker:podcasts in Australia
Speaker:for what we're doing
Speaker:here, which is awesome.
Speaker:I think that's something
Speaker:that we need to
Speaker:stop and appreciate.
Speaker:I think we've got about
Speaker:10, 000 plus unique
Speaker:listeners, which is
Speaker:really, really cool too.
Speaker:I think we've just ticked
Speaker:over more than 20, 000
Speaker:downloads, which is pretty
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I think that's something
Speaker:that we didn't expect this
Speaker:to be where it is today.
Speaker:And we've had amazing
Speaker:feedback from people.
Speaker:A lot.
Speaker:Just being like, even just
Speaker:being stopped by people on
Speaker:it, on somewhere be like,
Speaker:Oh, I love the podcast or
Speaker:I get a message or a call.
Speaker:I know that means a
Speaker:lot to both of us and
Speaker:it's something that
Speaker:we've both love doing.
Speaker:For me, it's actually a
Speaker:bit of a mental health
Speaker:release where I just get
Speaker:to stop and not worry
Speaker:about work so much, but I
Speaker:do want to do some things
Speaker:differently next year
Speaker:and we do want to bring
Speaker:this to wider audience.
Speaker:. Yeah.
Speaker:We are looking for sponsors
Speaker:if anyone's interested
Speaker:in sponsoring us too.
Speaker:We've already got a
Speaker:few that are going to
Speaker:be jumping on board.
Speaker:But the whole idea is just
Speaker:to blow this up and make
Speaker:this a massive educational
Speaker:source around multiple
Speaker:points of our industry.
Speaker:and if you want to
Speaker:collaborate, we are 100
Speaker:percent keen to have a chat
Speaker:because I think, you know,
Speaker:it's not just me and Maddy
Speaker:trying to push this out.
Speaker:Like we're, we're nothing
Speaker:without the community.
Speaker:So if you've got a
Speaker:cool idea or a business
Speaker:or, uh, whatever.
Speaker:And it's sort of on that
Speaker:same thought process
Speaker:of building better,
Speaker:being better we'd love
Speaker:to hear more about it.
Speaker:we're going to get some
Speaker:pretty cool things.
Speaker:Like, I've already been
Speaker:sort of speaking to some
Speaker:people in the background of
Speaker:some projects we can go to.
Speaker:And these are
Speaker:very different.
Speaker:They're cool.
Speaker:Like they're way above
Speaker:what even I'm going
Speaker:to, I'm going to be
Speaker:potentially out of my
Speaker:depth and understanding
Speaker:some of these projects.
Speaker:So they're definitely
Speaker:things that I've never
Speaker:even seen before.
Speaker:So super happy, whether
Speaker:it's a prefabrication or
Speaker:a different system like
Speaker:mud, bricks or straw,
Speaker:just tell us, let us know.
Speaker:We want to know about
Speaker:these projects because
Speaker:we'd love to get out
Speaker:there and make it part
Speaker:of what we're producing.
Speaker:But Look, there's going
Speaker:to be big changes for
Speaker:both of us next year.
Speaker:Our businesses are going
Speaker:to continue to grow.
Speaker:We're going to continue
Speaker:to push boundaries.
Speaker:We're going to continue
Speaker:to be honest and
Speaker:transparent with what
Speaker:we do and continue
Speaker:to talk about mental
Speaker:health and education.
Speaker:That's probably where
Speaker:we're going to be
Speaker:at home, I think.
Speaker:Good man.
Speaker:Yeah, and uh, for all
Speaker:you people planning a
Speaker:big New Year's, be safe
Speaker:and look after yourself.
Speaker:have a great Christmas,
Speaker:holiday, whatever you do.
Speaker:Got one last question
Speaker:for you though.
Speaker:How do you think you're
Speaker:going to step outside your
Speaker:comfort zone next year?
Speaker:How am I going to
Speaker:step outside of my
Speaker:comfort zone next year?
Speaker:I was about to say I want
Speaker:to do much, a lot more
Speaker:public speaking, which
Speaker:I know you and I've got
Speaker:some stuff in the mix,
Speaker:but I don't, it's not
Speaker:really stepping outside
Speaker:of my comfort zone.
Speaker:I'm actually working
Speaker:on some stuff with a
Speaker:new psychologist at
Speaker:the moment, which is
Speaker:stepping me outside of
Speaker:my comfort zone.
Speaker:I'm really hoping to
Speaker:continue to work on that
Speaker:because it's taken me
Speaker:to some, things that I,
Speaker:I never thought were a
Speaker:problem, but I think it's
Speaker:sort of shaped me who I
Speaker:am now and, Why I show
Speaker:up to some situations
Speaker:in certain ways, which
Speaker:is really interesting.
Speaker:So I think understanding
Speaker:me, stepping outside of my
Speaker:comfort zone a little bit.
Speaker:And I know I'm pretty in,
Speaker:tune with myself, but, um,
Speaker:this is different, which
Speaker:is quite exciting and a
Speaker:bit scary at the same time.
Speaker:What about you?
Speaker:I'm going to be a dad.
Speaker:The, so,
Speaker:, holy dude.
Speaker:Holy
Speaker:we're
Speaker:expecting middle of
Speaker:next year which is
Speaker:really, really cool.
Speaker:we're about 10
Speaker:weeks at the moment.
Speaker:So the time this goes
Speaker:to air, we would've
Speaker:told everyone.
Speaker:We still haven't actually
Speaker:told too many people.
Speaker:We're still waiting
Speaker:to catch up with a
Speaker:lot of people and we
Speaker:know that this will
Speaker:be post-Christmas.
Speaker:So by that time,
Speaker:it'll be a very common
Speaker:knowledge to people.
Speaker:I would've told everyone
Speaker:that I needed to tell.
Speaker:So we're super,
Speaker:super excited that
Speaker:that's gonna happen.
Speaker:So there's a lot for
Speaker:me to learn, a lot
Speaker:for me to juggle.
Speaker:I'm definitely gonna be
Speaker:out of my comfort zone.
Speaker:We have to do a little
Speaker:daddy's corner and
Speaker:I'll be picking your
Speaker:brain for advice.
Speaker:But that's something
Speaker:that we're both super,
Speaker:super excited for.
Speaker:I can't wait.
Speaker:don't want to give
Speaker:advice, right?
Speaker:But I just want to tell
Speaker:them, tell you a really
Speaker:quick story about when we
Speaker:first had our first child.
Speaker:The best thing that Lucy
Speaker:and I did before Darcy
Speaker:was born is that we went
Speaker:and saw my psychologist
Speaker:together and had a session
Speaker:together to talk about,
Speaker:what was going to happen.
Speaker:Now, my psychologist at
Speaker:the time was she knew a lot
Speaker:about postnatal depression,
Speaker:which is really, really
Speaker:valuable, I think for
Speaker:everybody to understand.
Speaker:And then we had a
Speaker:session with her
Speaker:after Darcy was born.
Speaker:And I still remember both
Speaker:of those sessions really
Speaker:vividly and the best bit of
Speaker:information that I got told
Speaker:from Lisa was you're going
Speaker:to go to work and you're
Speaker:going to be really busy.
Speaker:And you're going to come
Speaker:home, and the dishes
Speaker:might not be done, and
Speaker:the washing might not
Speaker:be done, and the house
Speaker:might be a mess, and you
Speaker:might need to cook dinner.
Speaker:And what you also need to
Speaker:understand is that your
Speaker:wife or partner, whoever's
Speaker:the primary caregiver
Speaker:is working 24 seven.
Speaker:So you might've gone
Speaker:down a 10 hour day, 10
Speaker:hour day at work, but
Speaker:that primary caregiver
Speaker:is working 24 seven.
Speaker:So don't expect all
Speaker:those things to be
Speaker:done because you are
Speaker:part of that as a team.
Speaker:Oh, and that's something
Speaker:that I'm totally
Speaker:aware of already.
Speaker:Like I know that we're
Speaker:going to be learning a lot
Speaker:very fast, very quickly.
Speaker:We're lucky that like a lot
Speaker:of our friends and family
Speaker:have already had kids.
Speaker:We've got a lot of
Speaker:people to bounce off.
Speaker:And we understand that
Speaker:what will work for us might
Speaker:not work for other people.
Speaker:What's worth other people
Speaker:might not work for us.
Speaker:Man, I'm so fucking
Speaker:excited for you.
Speaker:so pumped.
Speaker:so,
Speaker:One thing that I've always
Speaker:wanted to do is work my
Speaker:way to four day weeks
Speaker:once I have Children.
Speaker:Um, think that's really,
Speaker:really important to
Speaker:I want to be there.
Speaker:I want to be around.
Speaker:I understand there's gonna
Speaker:be days where I need to
Speaker:work longer and work more
Speaker:and things like that.
Speaker:And that's the nature
Speaker:of having a business.
Speaker:And, I understand that
Speaker:I don't get paternity
Speaker:leave like everyone else,
Speaker:that you get a few days
Speaker:here and there and you've
Speaker:got to make it work,
Speaker:but it's a flexibility,
Speaker:long time is the benefit
Speaker:that we get essentially
Speaker:is running a business.
Speaker:So, I think that's
Speaker:something that I will
Speaker:probably learn to
Speaker:juggle and work around.
Speaker:massive congratulations.
Speaker:I'm so excited
Speaker:about.
Speaker:What is ahead of you?
Speaker:The being a dad and
Speaker:being a parent, is just
Speaker:something that, I feel
Speaker:incredibly grateful that
Speaker:I've had the opportunity
Speaker:to be a dad.
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:And, I'm super
Speaker:excited for 2025.
Speaker:I'm pumped.
Speaker:It's a new opportunity.
Speaker:It's a good reset.
Speaker:It's actually one
Speaker:tip I can give.
Speaker:It's probably a
Speaker:bit too late now.
Speaker:One of the biggest tips
Speaker:I can give to anyone.
Speaker:Tell everyone you're
Speaker:coming back a week later
Speaker:than you actually are.
Speaker:Just give us your
Speaker:first week of the
Speaker:year just to settle
Speaker:in, do some planning.
Speaker:Time to yourself to really
Speaker:think through the year
Speaker:and plan out the year.
Speaker:It's one of the best
Speaker:things that I do that I
Speaker:always come back a week
Speaker:early and don't, well, I
Speaker:just don't answer people's
Speaker:calls and tell everyone
Speaker:I'm back a week later.
Speaker:It's one thing that really
Speaker:helps me get through
Speaker:the year and start, so
Speaker:that's a really good,
Speaker:a really good point.
Speaker:But but thanks
Speaker:this year, Hayne.
Speaker:I've really enjoyed
Speaker:what we've done.
Speaker:, but have a, great break.
Speaker:You too, buddy.
Speaker:We'll chat soon.
Speaker:See you mate.
Speaker:Bye.
