Speaker AHere's today's reading from Luke 6, 6:11.
Speaker BReading from the message on another Sabbath, he went to the meeting place and taught.
Speaker BThere was a man there with a crippled right hand.
Speaker BThe religion scholars and Pharisees had their eyes on Jesus to see if he would heal the man, hoping to catch him.
Speaker BHe in a Sabbath violation.
Speaker BHe knew what they were up to and spoke to the man with the crippled hand.
Speaker BGet up and stand here before us.
Speaker BHe did and he did.
Speaker BThen Jesus addressed them.
Speaker ALet me ask you something.
Speaker BWhat kind of action suits the Sabbath best?
Speaker BDoing good or doing evil?
Speaker BHelping people or leaving them helpless?
Speaker BHe looked around, looked, looked at each one in the eye, and he said to the man, hold out your hand.
Speaker BHe held it out.
Speaker BIt was as good as new.
Speaker BThey were beside themselves with anger and started plotting how they might get even with him.
Speaker BWell, my friends, in today's reflection, in today's passage from Luke, Jesus is prioritizing human dignity over religious regulations.
Speaker BHe's really asked some powerful lessons, so let's get into them and our points to ponder.
Speaker BThe first about the politics of healing Jesus.
Speaker BAct of healing wasn't just medical, it was political.
Speaker BBy choosing to heal on the Sabbath, he challenged power structures that use religious rules to maintain control.
Speaker BToday we see similar dynamics when religious institutions prioritize tradition over human needs, particularly in debates about health care access, LGBTQ rights and social action.
Speaker BThe second point is about surveillance and resistance.
Speaker BThe biblical text here notes that religious authorities, quote, had their eyes on Jesus.
Speaker BThat is they were watching for violations.
Speaker BThey were surveilling him.
Speaker BThis surveillance surveillance culture mirrors modern attempts to police and control marginalized communities.
Speaker BJesus's response performing the healing anyway demonstrates holy resistance to oppressor oppressive systems.
Speaker BOne more point to ponder is the false binary of rules versus compassion.
Speaker BJesus's question about doing good or doing evil exposes the false choice between following rules and helping people.
Speaker BThis challenges us to examine where our own religious practices or institutional policies might be causing more harm rather than fostering wholeness.
Speaker BHere's your action step.
Speaker BIdentify one situation in your community where religious rules or traditions are being used to exclude or harm others.
Speaker BTake one concrete step to challenge the situation, whether through speaking up in a church meeting, supporting affected individuals are working to change discriminatory policies.
Speaker BRemember Jesus example?
Speaker BSometimes breaking unjust rules is the most sacred action we can take.
Speaker BWe're going to come back and have a closing prayer here in just a sec, but I do want you to know that we have a great resource for you to help you with your at home Bible study practice.
Speaker BIt is called the ABC 123 Bible Study Method.

Speaker BThat website is voiceofgoddaily.com let's pray.
Speaker BOh God, you are a divine healer and we live in a world where rules often matter more than people.
Speaker BHelp us recognize where we might be complicit in systems that prioritize order over compassion.
Speaker BGive us courage to stand with those who are marginalized by religious traditions.
Speaker BWhen we face opposition for choosing love over law, remind us that we follow one who did the same.
Speaker BGrant us wisdom to know when to speak up, strength to act with bold love and grace to help create communities where all can find healing and wholeness.
Speaker BAmen.
