It's time to head to the berg.
Speaker ALet's get started.
Speaker AWelcome to the Ata Nation podcast.
Speaker AInstructors, students, parents, family of Ata Nation.
Speaker AWelcome back to the Ata Nation podcast.
Speaker AThis is episode 173 and I am your host, Senior Master Zach Hayden.
Speaker AWhile you are listening to this, we're in Pittsburgh.
Speaker AThis usually drops.
Speaker AOur episodes drop on Fridays on YouTube and all your favorite podcast players.
Speaker AAnd this is Fall Nationals week.
Speaker ASo you will see me in Pittsburgh.
Speaker AI'll be there.
Speaker AI'm actually leaving in the morning after I record this.
Speaker AWe are heading out.
Speaker AI want to.
Speaker AWe drive over there.
Speaker AI'm going to go to Master's training.
Speaker AI haven't been able to go the last couple of years that it's been in Pittsburgh.
Speaker AAnd so I want to hit the Master's training this year with Grandmaster MK and the Master's Council and the training department.
Speaker AThen on Thursday.
Speaker AExcuse me, On Friday.
Speaker ANo, Thursday.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AGetting all my days confused.
Speaker AI got a bunch of training.
Speaker AIf you don't, you know, make plans to attend these training events, you are missing out.
Speaker AI'm.
Speaker AI'm super excited you'll be able to see me.
Speaker AI'm doing two of the business ones and then I will be at the Max Team how to Build a Team seminar.
Speaker AAnd then I will also be cleaning up my black belt forms.
Speaker AI want to do that one as well.
Speaker AAnd you'll probably see me doing a little bit of recording as well.
Speaker AI've already booked to talk to the awesome people who've been at the Songam Academic.
Speaker AOh, it's got a cool name and I've forgotten it off the top of my head in Alaska.
Speaker AI don't know, go back and listen to the episode we did about the, the training in Whale Pass, Alaska.
Speaker ABut these guys have been out in Alaska doing all kinds of martial arts training and other cool things.
Speaker AAnd they're all kind of coming to Fall Nationals to get together and to do their.
Speaker ATheir almost the end of their training there.
Speaker AAnd then they're going to all go home for a week and then finish up their projects and stuff.
Speaker ASo I'm excited to get to talk to a bunch of them.
Speaker AGot that booked for Thursday afternoon.
Speaker AI hope to be talking to a couple other, doing some.
Speaker AA few other interviews while we're out there in Pittsburgh as well.
Speaker ASo I like to make a, make an adventure of it to try to get some people.
Speaker AYou have somebody you think I should talk to, you let me know.
Speaker AI like to like to hit people up in person.
Speaker AAnd I think we have a Nice little place to, to do that at.
Speaker ASo that's the goal.
Speaker AThis episode is going to be quick.
Speaker AHopefully you're listening to it while you're either in Pittsburgh or maybe you're traveling home from Pittsburgh.
Speaker AOr if you didn't make it to Pittsburgh, you can use this as kind of a. Oh man, I feel so bad that I wasn't there.
Speaker AI'm joking.
Speaker ABut make plans to attend the Hu Lee Classic in Little Rock, Arkansas or head to.
Speaker AAnd also make sure you play.
Speaker AMake plans to hit spring Nationals in St. Louis.
Speaker AWe're gonna have a short episode today, but we do have an awesome athlete of the week we need to get to.
Speaker ALet's do that now.
Speaker AHey, TA Nation.
Speaker AWe're excited to have another awesome athlete of the week with us.
Speaker ACan you introduce yourself, ma'?
Speaker BAm?
Speaker BHi, I'm gianna Combs.
Speaker AWell, Ms. Combs, where are you?
Speaker AWhere are you from?
Speaker BI'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Speaker APittsburgh.
Speaker AWell, there's a big event coming out there pretty soon.
Speaker BYeah, Paul Nationals.
Speaker BVery excited.
Speaker AYou probably don't have to travel very far.
Speaker BNo, sir.
Speaker AThat's nice.
Speaker AWho, who do you train with?
Speaker BI train with the crew.
Speaker BKaminsky's excellent over in Ozem Park.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AAnd how'd you get started in martial arts?
Speaker BSo it was actually my brother, when I was four years old, he wanted to start it and I was like attached to the hip with all my family, so I decided to go along with them and I really ended up liking it.
Speaker ASo you seem quite a bit older than four now.
Speaker ASo it's been a few years.
Speaker AWhat rank are you?
Speaker BI'm a third degree black belt, sir.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker ANow here's the question.
Speaker ADoes your brother still do it?
Speaker BNo, he did not like it at the beginning at all.
Speaker BSo he quit.
Speaker AIsn't that funny how that works sometimes?
Speaker ALike my brother and I started at the same time.
Speaker AHe's a red black belt, I'm a seventh degree.
Speaker AYou know, just goes that way.
Speaker ASo what is what for you and let's, let's go competition.
Speaker AWhat's your favorite aspect of competition?
Speaker BI would like the actual competition itself.
Speaker BI love being competitive with all my friends and like ringmates and getting in there and just being able to just.
Speaker AWin in some bling, right?
Speaker BYes, sir.
Speaker BBe able to show off everybody skills and it's just such a fun time for me.
Speaker AIt is, it is a blast.
Speaker ACompetition is just a great way to.
Speaker AI, I like what you said about, you know, friends hanging out.
Speaker AYou know, you get to be competitive but you also get all these people you get to hang out with when you compete.
Speaker AWhat's your.
Speaker AWhat's your favorite event to compete in?
Speaker BDefinitely combat and weapons.
Speaker BI love the speed and competitiveness in combat, but really going down on like technique and weapons is so much fun for me.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AOkay, what's your.
Speaker AWhat's your weapon of choice right now?
Speaker BThe long range.
Speaker ALong range.
Speaker AYou know what, we've seen a lot of.
Speaker AA lot of long range seems to be coming up in now in the third degree division.
Speaker BIt's definitely getting more popular.
Speaker BYes, sir, it is.
Speaker AI agree.
Speaker AI.
Speaker AIt's great to see.
Speaker AI really enjoy one.
Speaker AIt's just nice to have another weapon in there and not see like I'm.
Speaker AI don't need to see any regular BO staff anymore.
Speaker AI'm sorry, guys.
Speaker AI just am tired of seeing you.
Speaker ANo, I'm joking.
Speaker AIf.
Speaker ALet's say, I mean, we all love competition.
Speaker AWe love, you know, all the different aspects, but if there was an event that was like, maybe not your top event, not your favorite event, what would that be?
Speaker BI would say forms.
Speaker BIt's just something I don't get to spend a lot of time on, but I do still really enjoy it.
Speaker BIt's just something that kind of gets put off to the side with all my other training.
Speaker AYou like the.
Speaker AYeah, the other stuff is a little more fun to train with.
Speaker AAnd that third degree form has that horrible slow sidekick at the beginning, which is.
Speaker AMight be more motivated to train it if you didn't have that.
Speaker AThat's my opinion.
Speaker ASo what about, you know, we're, what, not quite halfway through the season?
Speaker AWe've got all nationals coming up, some other things.
Speaker AWhat kind of goals do you have for this season in your.
Speaker AIn your training and your competition?
Speaker BSo for competition, definitely getting back to Worlds and getting back up on that podium.
Speaker BLast year I was really close and I just want to finish it and get another world title.
Speaker BBut also making Team USA again is definitely another goal for me.
Speaker BGoing back to the camp and trying out there.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker ASo let's go.
Speaker AYou.
Speaker AYou've got a world title.
Speaker AYou've done a red letters already before.
Speaker BYes, sir.
Speaker BI have three world titles.
Speaker AWhoa.
Speaker AWhat are those then?
Speaker BSo I have combat weapons and then also Team Combat.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AAnd then obviously Team USA stuff.
Speaker ASo are you doing.
Speaker AAre you on Team USA currently?
Speaker BSo I start with Team USA in the 2026 season.
Speaker AGotcha.
Speaker AOkay, awesome.
Speaker ASo you.
Speaker AYou went to Athlete Development this year, got on the team at Athlete Development.
Speaker AIs that correct?
Speaker ASo start on the team in 26.
Speaker ACool.
Speaker AWas this year.
Speaker AYour.
Speaker AHave you been to athlete development camp in the past?
Speaker BThis was my first year.
Speaker AYour first year?
Speaker AYou come from the comancy school and this was your first year going, yes, sir.
Speaker BLast year I was on vacation.
Speaker BSo, okay, I start up that this year.
Speaker AWhat did.
Speaker AWhat did you think of it?
Speaker BI thought it was awesome to be able to just hang out with friends.
Speaker BAnd then also I loved getting all the different perspectives from the coaches.
Speaker BIt's so cool to see how, like, we all prepare for the same thing in different ways.
Speaker ASo that was definitely lots of amazing talent there.
Speaker AIf you had somebody, you know, that's listening and they're like, hey, I've been thinking maybe about this combat or maybe about this athlete development camp in the past.
Speaker AMaybe I should go.
Speaker AMaybe I shouldn't go.
Speaker AWhat would you tell them?
Speaker BI would definitely say to go.
Speaker BIt's a lot of tough training, but if you're really dedicated to it and you want to improve, it's definitely the move for training.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AAnd I mean, you're going to walk away with so many memories.
Speaker AYou know, you're going to have a couple of those memories that, like, in the middle of doing it, you're like, this is horrible.
Speaker AI never want to do this again.
Speaker ABut like, a week later you're like, that was awesome.
Speaker AI'm so glad I did that.
Speaker BYes, sir.
Speaker AYeah, there was probably any of the workouts with.
Speaker AProbably any of the workouts with Master Isaacs.
Speaker BThose were tough.
Speaker AYeah, he likes to.
Speaker AHe likes to, you know, make people run and do some stuff that, you know, they.
Speaker AThey don't love to do.
Speaker ASo aiming for some titles, getting to compete with Team usa, That's super exciting.
Speaker AWhat do you.
Speaker AWhat do you.
Speaker AI can't remember if this is going to come out before Fall Nationals.
Speaker ANot.
Speaker ALet's pretend it is coming out before Fall Nationals.
Speaker AWhat's your hope for Fall Nationals?
Speaker AWhat are you trying to get done there?
Speaker BDefinitely get some more points on the board for all of my events.
Speaker BI'm super excited in Pete, individually and in teams, but, you know, just make some more memories and really get to enjoy competing at such a high level because you got everybody flying all over the country to come see Pittsburgh, for sure.
Speaker AWe love going out to Pittsburgh.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AI think they should keep Nationals there forever, but I don't think they're going to.
Speaker AWell, yeah, you do, too.
Speaker AIt's really easy to get some.
Speaker ASome point.
Speaker AYou know, it's a little cheaper to get Points that way if you can just drive to your backyard.
Speaker ASo, hey, for you, what does it mean to be an athlete that goes beyond the belt?
Speaker BFor me, going beyond the belt means taking all that, like, respect and discipline that you've learned from your peers and mentors and putting it into, like, your everyday aspects of life.
Speaker BWhether that's like spreading it into, like, your community or just onto yourself, reflecting it.
Speaker BBecause you always want to put 100 effort into everything you do and really strive for that personal growth that we should all, like, look forward to.
Speaker AI love that personal growth.
Speaker AI mean, you know, being all in on, on yourself and being able to, to improve yourself.
Speaker AThat's fantastic.
Speaker AWell, ma', am, first of all, congratulations on being one of these athletes of the week that the brand ambassadors are going and picking out.
Speaker ASuper cool.
Speaker AAnd thank you so much for your time today.
Speaker BThank you too, sir.
Speaker BI hope you have a good day.
Speaker AWe'll see you in Pittsburgh.
Speaker BSee you soon.
Speaker AIt was great to talk to another awesome athlete in ATA nation.
Speaker AAnd man, at Fall Nationals, we just see the caliber of these athletes from all, all over.
Speaker AIt is so cool to see.
Speaker AMake sure you guys are checking out the different events that are going across all of ATA Nation.
Speaker AAnd of course, look at the training opportunities.
Speaker AWe've got the virtual legacy trainings that you can do.
Speaker AThe Camp Jong Su that is coming up in Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as the Huli Classic coming up in Little rock.
Speaker AAnd then 2026, man, it'll be here before you know it.
Speaker ALots of amazing training opportunities.
Speaker ASpring nationals will be here before you know it.
Speaker ASo make sure you look at getting your hotel room booked for that.
Speaker AThat information is out online right now as well.

Speaker AWe do.
Speaker AYou know, ATA needs a silver play button from YouTube, but we need 100,000 subscribers and we don't have that yet, which is ridiculous.
Speaker AGuys.
Speaker AWe have so many ATA members across the country.
Speaker AHit that subscribe button.
Speaker AGet your friends to hit that subscribe button.
Speaker AHelp me help the ATA get a silver play button.
Speaker AWouldn't that look good in the museum at headquarters?
Speaker AI think it would.
Speaker AJust saying.
Speaker AAnd shows how awesome ATA Nation is.
Speaker AThat's all of you.
Speaker AMake sure you get out there and go beyond the bell.
