Speaker:Sound of Accra podcast, where we unpack economic topics and affairs
Speaker:across the African continent. I'm your host, Adrian

Speaker:blockchain technology and cryptocurrency in a lot more
Speaker:detail. Special thanks to our sponsors, Binance Africa.

Speaker:In today's episode, we will explore the need for education and
Speaker:awareness initiatives of cryptocurrency and blockchain
Speaker:in Africa. References used for today's episode will all be found
Speaker:in the podcast player description section below. Let's get straight into
Speaker:it. Cryptocurrency and blockchain education initiatives are
Speaker:becoming increasingly important in Africa. Now this is due
Speaker:to the growing interest and potential applications of these
Speaker:technologies across the continent. Now here are some
Speaker:key reasons why education and awareness initiatives are
Speaker:certainly needed. Now this is for several reasons. Okay? Now
Speaker:one is economic empowerment. Now if we look at blockchain
Speaker:technology and cryptocurrencies, now these can provide
Speaker:financial services to the unbanked population, which is
Speaker:a big deal in many African countries, which I've mentioned
Speaker:already in this special Fintech Friday series with Binance
Speaker:Africa. By educating people about these technologies,
Speaker:they can gain access to new financial opportunities and
Speaker:improve their economic status. What's also important here is
Speaker:innovation and development. Now if you look at the blockchain, this
Speaker:can drive innovation in various sectors such as
Speaker:supply chain management, healthcare, governance, and so
Speaker:on and so forth. Now these awareness initiatives
Speaker:can support developers as well as entrepreneurs and help
Speaker:such people to leverage the blockchain solutions tailored to
Speaker:various specific African challenges that we face in the continent. Another one
Speaker:that we need to pay attention to is security and transparency.
Speaker:Now with the blockchain, the benefit of the blockchain is its, of course,
Speaker:its robust security features. And this helps to clamp down
Speaker:on fraud and corruption. And you know in Africa we do get a lot of
Speaker:that. And this is such an issue that continues to prevail over
Speaker:and over over time. Now if we educate
Speaker:people about such benefits of the blockchain, this could
Speaker:help to bring about a more transparent and
Speaker:trustworthy system that we can use in
Speaker:the world, especially in Africa. Let's also not forget about job creation.
Speaker:Now as the blockchain industry naturally grows, and I mean the tech
Speaker:industry in Africa has been booming. The web 2 industry in
Speaker:Africa has been booming. Now just imagine where it's gonna go with
Speaker:web 3. If you have been listening to the Sound of Crowd podcast,
Speaker:you may have noticed I've spoken to people such as Eric from
Speaker:iGeeks. And you've also noticed that I've spoken to
Speaker:people such as Jeff from TalentPool. And these are
Speaker:people who are basing their businesses based on the web
Speaker:free, and they're creating lots of job opportunities on the back of it. Now
Speaker:if the blockchain industry continues to grow, the demand for such
Speaker:skilled professionals are also going to be needed. I will leave
Speaker:a link to IA Gigs. I will leave a link to IA
Speaker:and also leave a link to talent pool in the description below.
Speaker:Now education programs can equip
Speaker:individuals who don't have the skills to be able to have the necessary
Speaker:skills to be able to pursue careers in web 3 in the
Speaker:blockchain in this emerging field.
Speaker:Reasons that we need to provide education and awareness
Speaker:initiatives regarding cryptocurrency and the blockchain. You can
Speaker:see here that African countries still have a limited
Speaker:understanding of cryptocurrency and blockchain and its full potential.
Speaker:And naturally, as interest grows in this area, education
Speaker:will be crucial and will be responsible and will help
Speaker:to create more adoption in this area. Once
Speaker:we teach best practice for securely storing and managing
Speaker:cryptocurrencies, and we raise awareness of potential risks of cryptocurrencies,
Speaker:as well as how to mitigate risks, and as well as explaining them
Speaker:how to explaining to people how to navigate cryptocurrency and
Speaker:blockchain, whilst remaining compliant to the legal and compliance
Speaker:landscapes, we will be in a better Africa
Speaker:before you know. Now having addressed the need for
Speaker:such education initiatives and the awareness
Speaker:for cryptocurrency and blockchain in Africa,
Speaker:There's clearly some challenges and opportunities
Speaker:that still need to be addressed. Now while progress is
Speaker:still being made there are challenges that still remain.
Speaker:Now as much as we all need education on the continent regarding
Speaker:blockchain and cryptocurrency, it's clear that there's a
Speaker:limited amount of expertise. There's a limited amount of education that can go
Speaker:around to all of these people in Africa. There's a limited amount of
Speaker:educators. So that means the ratio to which the education
Speaker:can be given. It's,
Speaker:it's gonna be a challenge because there's limited blockchain expertise
Speaker:amongst educators. So as a result, there's gonna
Speaker:be a lack of widespread access to training resources. And as a
Speaker:result, there'll be a need for more localized, more culturally
Speaker:relevant educational content. There may even be more of a need for
Speaker:digitally access content Because this is the only way we
Speaker:can reach as many people with the limited resources and
Speaker:limited educators that we have in the continent. However,
Speaker:there are also significant opportunities that we can look at here.
Speaker:Now, there are growing interest from students and professionals. And there's
Speaker:also potential for online learning to reach the wider audiences, which is
Speaker:great. So as I mentioned, I think online learning is gonna be so
Speaker:important because there's a limited amount of expertise, there's a limit amount
Speaker:limited amount of educators on the continent. If you've been listening to the sound
Speaker:of a podcast, you've heard me speak to any handful amount
Speaker:of crypto experts. I mean, you look at Carlita Cash, You look
Speaker:at, Eric from Aya, and there's some others that
Speaker:I probably have interviewed. But there's a limited amount of expertise.
Speaker:Now what we need here to move forward is increasing support from
Speaker:blockchain companies and organizations. I mean,
Speaker:in a number of episodes ago, earlier on this year, I talked about the
Speaker:Stellar Development Foundation who visited Accra for the first
Speaker:time. I think this was around the February mark.
Speaker:Alright? And this is great to see, you know, other blockchain
Speaker:organisations getting involved in the African continent to
Speaker:provide crypto and blockchain education.
Speaker:Binance have also been throwing events in countries like
Speaker:Ghana and South Africa. And they are doing their parts
Speaker:to educate the audience in terms of cryptocurrency. Alright?
Speaker:And block and the blockchain, of course. Now if we expand
Speaker:education awareness initiatives, now we will be able to
Speaker:position Africa to be able to leverage blockchain technology
Speaker:even more in order to advance the economic
Speaker:development and innovation of the continent. So what we need is
Speaker:a collaboration between academic institutions and
Speaker:industry partners, as well as the government. And I think these 3 working
Speaker:in cohesion will be the key to success for
Speaker:education, go far, in terms of cryptocurrency and
Speaker:blockchain on the continent. So we need more organizations
Speaker:like Binance, which are already playing their part, who are going
Speaker:to work with governments, and also collaborate with academic institutions
Speaker:in order to advance blockchain and cryptocurrency
Speaker:knowledge on the African continent. Now I think this is a great
Speaker:segue to talk about current education initiatives on the
Speaker:African continent. Now Binance has Binance
Speaker:Academy, and they have conducted educational meetups and
Speaker:university tours in various African countries to spread
Speaker:awareness about the blockchain technology. There's
Speaker:also universities such as University of Cape Town, the University of
Speaker:Nairobi. They're incorporating blockchain into their curriculum.
Speaker:You also have Ashesi University in Ghana. They're
Speaker:also incorporating the blockchain and cryptocurrency into their educational
Speaker:curriculum. We have ABI, which is the Africa Blockchain
Speaker:Institute. They offer courses. They offer research,
Speaker:and they also offer deployment solutions to promote blockchain
Speaker:across Africa. We can also talk about, which is the
Speaker:largest company in the digital asset industry. They've
Speaker:partnered with universities in Ivory Coast to help
Speaker:organize educational workshops regarding blockchain and cryptocurrency,
Speaker:which I think is fantastic. That's PLP. Now this initiative
Speaker:aims to train 1,000,000 software developers in Africa by
Speaker:2027, including blockchain technology
Speaker:as part of its curriculum. This is fantastic. So
Speaker:I'll leave information about all of these initiatives in the description below.
Speaker:So make sure you guys take a further look into what all of these ones
Speaker:offer, especially Binance Academy is definitely a
Speaker:popular one that you can check out. Thanks again for listening to today's episode.
