[00:00:00] Kat: Welcome to the fit father project member chat podcast. I'm excited today to introduce to you two members who just went on our most recent fit father project retreat. They are here to talk to you all about it. So that you can know what that experience is like, and hopefully join us on our next one. My name is Kat.
[00:00:33] For those of you who don't know me, I am an accountability coach here at the fit father project. So I get to walk the journeys with the members. And today we have Jeff, who's going to introduce you
[00:00:44] Jeff: right now. Hey everyone. I'm fit father, Jeff Rothman, and I hail from Chicago, Illinois, downtown the West loop.
[00:00:52] And I started. I'd say probably May or June of this year in the Fit Father program, the FF30X program. [00:01:00] Oh, a little bit more. Okay. So I have two, two amazing kids, 10 and 11 year old that I, um, that I love. They're little mini me's and, um, they'll be probably, probably part of the story and what I talk about a little bit today as far as motivation and why doing the, you know, this program and the retreat.
[00:01:18] Kat: Awesome. And
[00:01:19] Jason: Jason. Yeah, my name is Jason Z. Gadlow. I live a little bit south of Cleveland, Ohio, in a town called Brunswick, um, 45 years old. I have a daughter named Kaylee, who's 13, and a wife named Chelsea. And, uh, yeah, just excited to be a part of this, this conversation. It's good to see you guys.
[00:01:40] Kat: Okay. So you see the ad for the fit father project retreat.
[00:01:44] And then what happens after that? What goes through your mind and what gave you the confidence to sign up? We'll start with Jeff. Cause he said he was ready to jump in. Oh
[00:01:53] Jeff: man. Like Jason, I got like, this is, this is so like, um, This is probably telling too much about my personality, but I [00:02:00] saw the, I saw the ad and signed up for fit father all the same at the same time.
[00:02:05] You know, I, I, I like scrutinize this program so much. I like, I'm so OCD. I went and downloaded all the pictures to see if they were like modified in any way. Cause I was like, there is no way these cyber genetics. people that you see in these Delta ads. There's no way this is real. This guy's like 50 or 60 and like stacked.
[00:02:24] They know that he's on roids or something. This isn't real or they're photoshopping it. So I went and downloaded it, the pictures. I'm like, Oh my God, these weren't modified. These are real pictures. Well, I need to check this out. Sign me up. You know, I did the program, got on there and saw Ben advertising this retreat.
[00:02:38] And I'm like, Sedona. Yes. Yes. I, I could do Sedona, but then I was thinking, okay, if I go to this, this means I'm going to actually do everything, which I struggled with. I, I could, you know, do exercise maybe two weeks at a time. And then I, I'd see a squirrel and forget about it. And there, there goes a year's resolution or whatever.[00:03:00]
[00:03:00] But I thought, okay, I'm putting money into this. And I've got all these guys that are going to be counting on me. It's guys, like these, they're going to be my future brothers. I'm not going to let them down. So honestly, I did it all at once. I signed up for the program and that retreat knowing that that would make me do everything.
[00:03:16] So it worked
[00:03:18] Kat: out really well, by the way. It's a totally different perspective, right? Because most of this time you would assume someone's been with the program and like loves us. And so they're coming. But for you, you get to give the perspective today of. No, signed up right in. This is the real deal. I'm committing to myself and I'm going to be there.
[00:03:38] That's fantastic. All right. Jason, what was your experience with signing up?
[00:03:42] Jason: Yeah, yeah, no. Um, similarly to Jeff, I, I signed up, came across the program, you know, had been challenged, you know, been challenged with some things in my life and looking for some direction and some kind of structure. And so, uh, decided to, to join the program.[00:04:00]
[00:04:00] Uh, didn't, uh, didn't, uh, dig into it as much as, as Jeff
[00:04:05] Jeff: did, but I'll scrutinize it. You're not Rain Man? But
[00:04:09] Jason: I'm kind of a more just like jump in and then figure out. So I was a little different in that sense. But, uh, I joined, I think like it was August, September ish. And so it was a lot of ads coming out about Sedona.
[00:04:25] And I'm just kind of like, you know what? Screw it. I'm gonna join. And then I'm also gonna join the retreat as well. Not an active Facebooker, didn't know anyone, like zero, um, but felt that it was extremely important. You know, it's, it's the old, you know, you hear people say being comfortable being uncomfortable.
[00:04:46] And I thought, you know, the way that I'm going to challenge myself. Is, is just jump in with a whole bunch of like minded dudes that I already know are, are proven just from what I've seen, and I thought the ad campaigns were done very [00:05:00] well and thought, you know what, I'm, I'm just going to go knock this retreat out and, and use it as like a, a stepping stone or a starting point, uh, to be around a whole bunch of like minded bought in dudes and learn from them.
[00:05:12] You're right.
[00:05:13] Jeff: That video. Okay. So that video, that is what did it. I forgot about that. I, I told, you know, on the retreat, I was trying to describe the person I saw, but the video said everything. I saw one guy like the before and after, and you know, like I remember Jason and I were around the same age. And I'm like, this dude is probably 15 years older than us.
[00:05:31] And he like knocked this out. Like it was, it was very inspirational. I felt like, Hey, I can actually do this. There's like an apples to apples comparison to my situation.
[00:05:40] Kat: Yeah. Absolutely. Okay. You guys jump in. You don't know anyone, and one of the things that happens is once you sign up for the retreat, we put you in a special group so that you can meet some people coming, and you're meeting them online.
[00:05:55] You're not meeting them in person. Now Jason jumped in and got to start [00:06:00] talking to people, everyone sharing, but Jeff, what happened there with you? What did we have? I
[00:06:06] Jeff: mean, like, that was so, oh my gosh, that was so embarrassing. So we have our first meet, we have our first meeting right before that Facebook group and I'm all gung ho and yeah, I get to see these people live on the, you know, on Zoom.
[00:06:17] These are who, you know, gonna be my brothers, gonna get to know them. And then, um, so long story short, I just, I missed the email. I for, I don't, I don't know how, I just, I just missed the email that shows the sign up for that group. So I'm going along, you know, going to work, personal life, everything's going.
[00:06:35] I'm looking forward to it. I'm like. This is really odd. We had such a good meeting and hit it off. I wonder why there's, you know, there's no more buzz. I thought we were going to get to know each other better. And, and Kat's like so funny. She's just saying, Oh, do your bio. And I'm like, Oh, the bio. Oh, okay.
[00:06:49] I'll do that. You know, like, and fast forward, like two, two days before we're supposed to go, I'm like, okay, I'm getting worried. I haven't heard anything. You [00:07:00] know, we, the email was like, okay, you make sure you're ready. I'm like, How are, how's everybody, how does everybody know what to do? And that's when I finally find the, um, I finally find the mention in the email that talks about that, yeah, here's the Facebook group.
[00:07:13] And so I just. A mad rush to go in there and it's something I wanted so badly because I'm a Facebook like I'm a social media like I just I love all that stuff. I love meeting everybody. You're like, how's your mom and grandma? What size shoe do you wear? Whatever. And so, so I hopped in there and had to catch up on two months of like awesome conversation where people are like, yeah, I'm so excited about all the things that were missing.
[00:07:36] Like, all I had to do was like, check my inbox and email. So anyways, I like. So I stopped that group, like the 24 hours before we left. And I'm not as bad as Jim Dickrell. Jim, Jim's one of the guys that went on the trip. He totally printed out like a dossier with everybody's bio and everything on them. Like, you know, he, he knew what they had for lunch the day before they left.
[00:07:56] And that's kind of my style, but you know, like that's [00:08:00] kind of what I was doing. It's like, I was studying for like sales, like a prospecting people. And so it's like, okay, what does this person do? And like, Jason, I didn't know anybody, but I guess. In hindsight, Jason, didn't you, you weren't you the ones that saying like, Hey, I thought you knew everybody beforehand.
[00:08:15] Jason: Yeah, right. Right. I know there were two, uh, prior to the actual trip itself to calls, right. Zoom calls. I missed the first one. I couldn't make it on. I was able to join the second one, but just audio I was driving. Um, so I, again, it, for me, uh, Jim's little printout was actually extremely helpful. When we were driving in the van, you know, to kind of look through and learn everyone, the, uh, the bios were great.
[00:08:43] I mean, I thought they, they were just nicely done and they actually helped us all get a better understanding of who would we be spending the next, you know. Oh yeah, and
[00:08:52] Jeff: Kat, and Kat, and speaking of that, Kat, I'm such a nerd, like, Jason, I, so, we get this thing from Jim, we happen to all three be in the same, same [00:09:00] van, and I'm sitting there reading, like, my, my, uh, speaking of live streaming, my, my actually hated this, and this was, like, one of my favorite things, is, like, I want to know about the situation before I get there, where, you know, some people are just, like, just show up and, so I made everybody in the van study, like, I gave a quiz, and, Like, I was reading, okay, so and so Chris Thatcher is from blah, blah, blah.
[00:09:19] Yeah, yeah. He has a goat farm, and he's also an ER nurse, and he's also like, you know, running for office. I'm just kidding. He's not running for office. But like, there's all these random facts in the bios. I was quizzing everybody, and I'm like, You know, either get this right or you don't get lunch. So we were, we took it pretty seriously because I was like, it was almost like we were playing like some Monopoly or some board game on, on the way to, on the way to camp, summer camp.
[00:09:43] Yeah. You know, it was cool.
[00:09:44] Kat: I mean, there isn't very many times I feel like in life as an adult where you are going to show up to a place where you don't know anyone. Right? You're just walking in and you're going to trust these people. So like when you sign up for the retreat, yes, we make sure there's [00:10:00] zoom calls so that you can meet people.
[00:10:01] You get added to a group. You can talk ahead of time. We have bios created so that you can learn about the other people are going to be there, but you still don't know who's going to be there. Right. And that's, that's uncomfortable. Like you said, you have to be comfortable with that uncomfortable piece, but you know, we're all like minded.
[00:10:18] We're all ready to go in. You're about to meet new friends and new family who have the same goals and vision that you do. And you guys jumped in and you did it. So you show up in Arizona. You get in a van where Dr. Anthony is there ready to meet you right away. You get this one on one time and then you show up at the retreat center.
[00:10:39] So what was your feelings like when you show up and you arrive?
[00:10:44] Jason: Yeah. So, I mean, just, uh, inquisitive. Um, you know, happy to, to make some connections just even in the, in the van. I mean, you know, Jeff and I, we connected in the airport, um, you know, [00:11:00] had an interesting experience. We're on the same flight. Uh, I connected in Chicago and then, you know, flew to Arizona.
[00:11:07] Jeff and I, we kind of like make eye contact as he's walking down the aisle and I'm sitting and it was just a friendly, like, Hey, what's up? Uh, and not even knowing like that was the guy. It
[00:11:19] Jeff: was it was just kind of funny because then we start a real moment like I walked down the aisle And you know, like i'm from the south So we're used to making like these like hey I know you but not really cut type faces and you just assume the person's from the south even though you've never seen them before but so I like I hadn't communicated with Jason or anyone yet.
[00:11:37] Yeah, I didn't have my, my phone with me on, you know, Facebook messenger. So I'm walking in there as this guy, he gives me like a little bit of a grin, but like it had to be cool enough so that you, you know, I'm not like, no, I'm not a weird, I'm not trying to like, whatever. Like I just, it's like a, like one of those cool nods like this, like, and so I go back to my seat.
[00:11:58] I'm like, gosh, I wonder if that was someone [00:12:00] from the trip. Maybe it was just. Or maybe I know them from Chicago. Anyways, so I'm sitting down and getting ready, you know, we're getting ready to close the door and I pull up Facebook messenger and I saw Jason's message that said, Hey, I think I'm on the same flight as you.
[00:12:12] So I'm like, turn it, I'm getting up, turning around, looking around. And, you know, I did walk up, touch him. I said, Hey, are you the guy that, and I had to literally conversation. We say, Hey, are you the guy that gave me like a cool, like, I kind of know you, but not really nod and you had on this jacket and you kind of look like a salesperson.
[00:12:30] I'm just kidding. I didn't say that. He actually is in sales, but you look like this type of person. And it was just, it was, it was fun. And so we were able to, we literally made a mad dash. We probably got in like 12 text messages in the next five minutes before the doors closed. It was fun.
[00:12:44] Jason: We sure did.
[00:12:45] Yeah, it was cool. But yeah, you arrived at, to the compound and it's just, you know, everyone's full of excitement. It's cool to actually observe so many brothers who know each other like [00:13:00] on Facebook only, but then like get to enjoy each other's company in person. And I, just as an observer, because I really was relatively newer to the group, uh, just watching, uh, some of the interactions from afar, it was, was just neat to see knowing that.
[00:13:16] By the time I leave here, I'm going to be just as intertwined with these guys and was really excited
[00:13:23] Jeff: to be a part of it. Absolutely. And being able to, the people that, um, where we stayed there on the, on the, the, what would you call it? It's like a retreat center, not a ranch or resort. What would
[00:13:35] Kat: you call it?
[00:13:37] The retreat
[00:13:39] Jeff: center area. Having the people that, that own the entire property. Take us on a tour up front when we first got there was, was, it was so cool. And then just the, the whole, the, the sacred, it was such a sacred area. Like you, you, you got this feeling of rich, true retreat, like a [00:14:00] wellness, Zen. Um, um, like that moment, um, from the second you get there and get off the bus.
[00:14:07] And, um, it, it, I, I love the whole experience because I'd never been to Sedona and to the Red Rocks and just everything. I, I've never even, I've never really seen cactus in person. So I was like a kid in a candy store getting there to get on this reservation with someone who's actually part of the tribe in that local area that runs this.
[00:14:25] I mean, I was like, It was almost too good to be true. Like, like, wait, is he an actor? Like, did you all pay him to do that? Cause this is just too, like, you know, we don't
[00:14:34] Kat: charge enough for the retreat to hire actors. So I promise that everyone was real and stories are true, but I think that's so important.
[00:14:46] We wanted to make sure that's like the goal, right. That you show up at this retreat and all of it is a safe space. Right. From the moment you arrive on property, you know, everyone you interact with, the chefs that are cooking in there, the owners of the property, [00:15:00] all of it's a safe place. Everyone wants you to just experience this life changing event.
[00:15:06] Everyone does. That's there. So you captured that person perfectly in explaining that feeling. I love it.
[00:15:12] Jeff: Yeah. And, and, and where we, even where we stayed, like it was, it was just a nice. Like, you know, like Jason said, I'm not used to just, I'm used to planning everything and having control of everything, like in my own family and just whatever, and, um, you get there and not knowing what you're going to do, but getting pleasantly, super pleasantly surprised that you all are taking care of us.
[00:15:32] When I saw the amenities and where we were going to stay, I'm like, Oh gosh, this is really nice. I mean, like you, uh, sink in my room, you know, this, just the way things were set, um, situated to where we were so close to each other, yet we had our own spaces. And then the quality of the place, like, I was pleasantly surprised because, you know, I think, like, some of my fears go back to, you know, church camp when I was seven or even Boy Scout camp where you have an outhouse and there's, like, a tarantula that's going to bite your butt in the toilet or whatever.
[00:15:59] I mean, [00:16:00] there's like, it's like, I, there's two fears from, like, 40 years ago or, oops, I meant five years ago, I mean,
[00:16:05] Kat: ten years ago. Yeah. Well, however many. You're not very old. Right? So, like, just a short amount of time ago.
[00:16:10] Jeff: Yeah. Exactly. I meant, like, I meant, like, ten or fifteen years ago. So there's, I mean.
[00:16:14] Yeah. Exactly. It, I was so pleasantly surprised with all the amenities that we were there. We weren't babied, but we also weren't like, okay, I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I'm going to have to start a fire with the flint that you just gave me that I had to go on a treasure hunt to find. I mean, it wasn't crazy like that.
[00:16:31] It was, it was amazing. You, you met us, you met us where we were, put it that way.
[00:16:36] Kat: Yeah, absolutely. And so as far as events go, we don't want to really spill the beans of like all of the different activities that someone will experience. Oh man. What? Yeah. Do you kind of want to like talk about, you show up, you don't know what's going to happen, right?
[00:16:50] You are out of your comfort zone. And what was that like, like kind of just going with the flow, right? Of how things are going to happen.
[00:16:58] Jeff: Well, I'd say for, I'd say for me, [00:17:00] like, um, I'm a, I'm, um, I'm a little bit, you know, have issues with anxiety, um, just candidly speaking. So I was like, I was kind of freaked out a little bit, but it almost became a novelty.
[00:17:13] And that's how I kind of like. If I can treat something as a novelty, then I just give up, give up all control and whatever. It's almost like, you know, Christmas gift. It's like, and that's so when I started looking at it from that standpoint, it became a major gift to me. I mean, like in the airport, I was like, okay, it doesn't matter that I don't know what I'm doing.
[00:17:32] And, you know, I'll just kind of, we'll see how it goes. And at each point when we got to the airport and everybody was together and, you know, you came up, you and Ben came up immediately to say hi to Jason and me, it was like, okay, it doesn't matter that things aren't planned. Everything is going just how I would love for it to happen.
[00:17:50] And when we got there, like everything was taken care of. And so even though it wasn't planned, that really brought my, you know, anxiety level down a lot. And it's like, after. [00:18:00] The first three or four things, how they just happened, like clockwork, I was able to completely let down my guard and just be there and not worry about anything and I, you know, there's so much about this weekend from the food, like everything was so intentional and had a major effect on me and let me know that life and things can be different and things can happen in a different way for the good.
[00:18:23] And now that I know that things can be a certain way and I can, um, cool. You know, give up control or, you know, in certain areas. And, um, it's just like, it was, there were a lot of new discoveries for me. So, uh, you know, without spilling the beans of specific events, it was, it was awesome. It was a great experience from that standpoint.
[00:18:43] Kat: Love it. Jason, talk to us about the food. Yeah. Tell us about it. Talk to us about the food. Because Jeff mentioned how good the food was. Can you talk
[00:18:50] Jeff: to us about the food? I'm sorry I outed it. No. Out
[00:18:53] Kat: it. Please. Let's talk about
[00:18:54] Jeff: it.
[00:18:56] Jason: The food was certainly a highlight. I mean, the [00:19:00] chefs just put so much hard work in.
[00:19:02] Time and in detail into, into every dish. They do a wonderful job, a thorough job of explaining how the dish was prepared and how certain, you know, uh, flavor profiles pair with others. And I mean, every day was. Was just a, you know, you're kind of like scratching your head or what's, what's, what's on the menu today, you know, just curious, but never disappointed.
[00:19:27] I mean, it was, it was absolutely delicious.
[00:19:29] Jeff: Jason, had you ever heard the word to ancient grains before then?
[00:19:36] Jason: Great. Yeah, this, this was. This was a high level meal, you know, I mean, just in terms of the quality and even just the explanation of everything that was served. So, uh, from the food standpoint, I would say, you know, if you're considering. Participating in the, in the retreat, like you will not be disappointed.
[00:19:56] That's the food
[00:19:57] Jeff: part was, I can't, everything was so [00:20:00] counter to it was so counterintuitive to what I expected. So I 30 X. So like each meal is 500 calories max. And I see. The amount of food up there. I mean, there's a perfect place plate and there's like this Organic locally raised perfect buffet of things.
[00:20:18] I'm like thinking does dr A know about this because i'm pretty sure this is gonna blow Away the past 30 60 90 days of all this hard work. I've been doing to lose all this weight And so I think I was a little paranoid about You know, like losing some of the gains that wait, that sounds weird. Losing some gains, gaining some of the loss.
[00:20:38] I can't even think right now, but like losing some of the gains I've made losing. And so, um, but you know, Ben, Ben Sterling, um, so the, what I found out really quickly is Ben has a, um, uh, reputation for eating a lot. Have healthy things but eating a lot like he has a big appetite even though he's a he's a fit You know, whatever lean guy.
[00:20:59] He has an [00:21:00] appetite. So i'm like, okay if ben can do it, what would ben eat? What what could ben do? And so I went in there and honestly cat Jason's jason knows because he's like dude save some for the rest of us, but like I filled up I mean and i'm not a big vegetable guy But the way they cooked it and what they put in it and all these like they had all these like ninja level tricks with combining things I'd never even heard of didn't know what the names were, but the taste and the flavoring of that made it so that I wanted to eat more.
[00:21:27] And so honestly, I don't even know what the calories were. I probably ate something ridiculous. But, um, long story short, and without too much TMI. I've got digestive issues. Like in general, I've got, you know, the inflammatory bowel disease. And so there's just certain things that I do not eat. I don't even talk about them.
[00:21:46] And they had a lot of those there. And, you know, I got to talking to the chefs about them and they explain. You know, I told them, you know, my concerns with dietary issues. Oh my God, Cat, that reminds me too. So I, yes, I was the one that when we get to, you get [00:22:00] to the first meal and they're like, normally we would have cooked this.
[00:22:03] Who's the, we've got this little, you know, this little special meal over here for the person with their, you know, you know, like I'm thinking, oh yeah, the person with their little baby stomach or their, their, their little. Inflamed intestines. Now, it was so funny. Like it was I'm that I was the exception that the reason you don't get, you know, steak tonight is because of this person with a no, it was funny because like in a group of guys, like you don't want to be that one person that has the drama.
[00:22:29] Right? And so I was like, paranoid when they came out with that. But everybody was fun. They, they, they teased me about it. Heck, I teased me about it, but it ended up being working out really well because that led into conversation with them that got me trying things that I normally wouldn't be able to do at home.
[00:22:45] And, you know, you know, spoiler alert, I was able to eat so many vegetables and types of cruciferous vegetables that I couldn't normally eat. And it was a combination of quality and the food that surrounds it. And, you know, [00:23:00] the. I don't want to spoil it, but I ate all of it and my health, my intestinal health within 24 to 48 hours, I saw a major difference.
[00:23:12] So what I would have eaten and done at home would have been an absolute freaking train wreck. But because of, you know, their knowledge of how, you know, How to combine things and how I could kind of hack my way and even I was able to eat a lot more and it made me a lot healthier. I gained like minimal weight when I was sad and dead at the end of the week.
[00:23:30] Sorry. I was just, I was, I was broke. It was like, it felt like the food felt like a magic trick, like the whole experience. I'm like, this is like. It was also counterintuitive and, um, amazing. It's a great point. Sorry. No, no. It's a great point. I
[00:23:43] Kat: was like so excited about the food. Because, like, I think a lot of people that have allergies or food sensitivities, like, they're very nervous to go to something like this.
[00:23:52] Oh
[00:23:53] Jeff: my god. Decades of anxiety, knowing where all the bathrooms are. Like I was, yeah, it was, that was crazy. [00:24:00]
[00:24:00] Jason: They were extremely accommodating. Period. We make sure,
[00:24:03] Kat: right? We ask. They just did a great job. We ask ahead of time, like, please tell us what your food sensitivities are. And we want to make sure everyone is taken care of.
[00:24:10] Because that's part of your experience. And again, it's that safe space feeling. You are coming into a place where we want you to
[00:24:16] Jeff: grow. It was so good. Yeah, it was. Yes. I really appreciate that. Hey, it's Dr. Ray. I want to quickly pause this episode to thank you for listening to this Fit Father podcast. I am just blown away at how amazing this podcast has become.
[00:24:31] I had no idea when I started FFP around 10 years ago that it would grow into such an impactful mission, and I wanna let you know that I'm so grateful to be connected to you in this lifetime. And on behalf of me and my entire team, we are so grateful to be in your life, helping you get and stay healthier for your family.
[00:24:47] That's what I want to share. Just some gratitude from my heart to yours. Let's get back to today's episode.
[00:24:53] Kat: All right. So then you get to have all of these different events where you're trying out new and different health and wellness [00:25:00] adventures, right? Like you're getting to try everything out, Jason, what was your, what was your favorite of all of the new events that you tried?
[00:25:07] Jason: Wow. Um, yeah. There, there were so many great ones, things that I typically would not have done on my own. So like the exposure, first of all, like in that, and I think that not to go off on a tangent, but if there's one thing that I want to highlight about this call and just the entire trip itself was like the holistic approach, um, you know, in my mind and without having that itinerary, I thought we were going and doing all these workouts and, you know, and, and it was like.
[00:25:37] There was working out, but there was also so many other things because if we're truly getting into health and wellness like there's much more to it right than just lifting weights you know the nutrition what we just talked about was there but you know, there's all this like mental work and you know, again, I don't want to say too much to spoil the [00:26:00] trip, but, you know, I would say my favorite part, uh, to answer your question though, cat was the, the cold plunge and, you know, I had done cryotherapy, um, many times prior to the cold plunge, I had, you know, showered, uh, cold showered, you know, for a few minutes.
[00:26:19] In fact, I, I still do that, but there was something different about being in the water. Um, at that temperature and at, for that time, and I'll tell you, you know, I'm a coffee guy in the morning, but that was like, that was the coffee, um, to, to, to be in the water and to just learn a little bit more about what that's doing to your body and why it, it, it's so, you know, captivating and, and just, uh, the science behind it.
[00:26:54] It was just really, really intriguing. And again, just kind of speaks to what I was saying earlier. Like [00:27:00] there's so much to health and wellness. And, um, I I've learned so much just from. Uh, the other activities that we participate,
[00:27:08] Jeff: it was really like, it was really bonding almost like a brat party experience doing the cold plunge for me because it was like, if you think about instead of going drink, drink, drink, we were like, you got this, stay in the water, you got this, talk about me, talk about whatever you know, what do you know, Jim, tell me about, tell me, okay, Dr.
[00:27:24] A, tell me about peptides, what do you think, okay, three minutes, you got this, tell me about this, and it took your mind off literally that shock and pain and being able to like, I tell you, if I had to sit there, my butt would have gotten up. If I had to sit there by myself and try to like mentally just tough it out, there was no way everybody's different, but like I would have bombed.
[00:27:45] But then Jim, like, and Jason, like you all talk nonstop to me and literally, well, you all can probably tell from the podcast. Um, I like talking and talking, you know, it makes me less nervous. And so I like that three, I stayed in there like three and a half minutes or [00:28:00] so, or more and didn't even, you know.
[00:28:02] It didn't even faze me because you all were cheering me on and like even by that point you all already knew our personality enough to be able to help me get through that. Every person was different and got support differently so it really was like that brotherhood frat moment where you've got this Jeff and we know you and you can do this.
[00:28:22] So that was like
[00:28:24] Jason: And it's a tough challenge. I mean, it's not easy. And so everyone was there to encourage everyone. No one was there. Like, I mean, and that, that's, you know, Kat, you said it earlier, just being a safe space. I mean, for anyone questioning, like, Oh, I'm not ready or. You know, I'm, I'm apprehensive and self conscious about this or that.
[00:28:43] Like not everyone there was, you know, of the utmost fitness and, you know, everyone's at different stages and everyone was there to support and someone's strength with someone's weakness and, you know, vice versa. And, and so I just think that again, to [00:29:00] speak to the larger group, you know, if you're considering this, you know, don't let any of those things deter you because.
[00:29:07] Um, you know, you've got a great support system and all those guys and even the strongest guy may struggle wherever and everyone was always there to pick everyone up. And that was a big takeaway for me.
[00:29:21] Jeff: That's a, that's a great point. Yeah. Yeah. Being there for each other. You know, we kind of came from different countries, different backgrounds, different races, different, different, everything.
[00:29:31] And especially personality types where, uh, you know, like. pretty extroverted people, but we probably, it was 50, 50 introverted and extroverted and everyone was very conscious of that for the other people. Um, you know, almost like surprisingly so. So when Jim went down, well, I guess I don't want to give it away, but there's a special kind of a sacred place there.
[00:29:55] And, um, when one of the other people that were with us went down there to meditate, you know. [00:30:00] The person's a little bit more of an introvert. I came down there and it's almost like the difference between having a cat and a dog. This person would have appreciated having a cat, like kind of sneak up and not bother you.
[00:30:11] Whereas, you know, Jeff, the dog, and that person was really scared. And so. They like, I was able, you know, everybody was conscious enough about every other, to not do that and vice versa. Someone like, when someone would just leave somebody alone in a tough moment, like what I had, they didn't leave me alone.
[00:30:31] They needed, they, they knew they need, I needed a dog, you know, like, like to kind of, um, make sure I wasn't, you know, I didn't want to be by myself. Like I got, I get my energy from other people. That everyone was so aware of that and and conscious of that. It was just that that was to not know anybody And maybe it was the bio game I'm gonna attribute it to me making everybody like wreck, you know Memorize everybody's bios and their personalities like I'm gonna just gonna take partial credit for that.[00:31:00]
[00:31:00] No, seriously, I think it was The, the type of people that went on the trip as well, um, made a big difference to where that wasn't an issue, you know, having different personality types. But there were,
[00:31:10] Jason: there were blue collar guys, there were white collar guys, there were professionals. There were
[00:31:13] Jeff: butterfly collar guys.
[00:31:14] I mean, I'm just kidding. Laborers. There were laborers. We had the whole caste system there. I'm
[00:31:21] Jason: just kidding. But it was just, uh, it was a true, uh, diverse group and, you know, everyone there just wanting to get better. And that was what was so cool is that everyone was there bought in wanting to get better, improve in some way.
[00:31:39] And, and willing to be vulnerable enough to like share their experiences with the other guys to pull from them. I mean, Kat and Ben and Craig and Dr. A like, Oh, great. All the speakers. Great. But like you, you learn so much from your peers. Right. And so it was like. All the little [00:32:00] sessions, um, outside of whatever, like lots of great conversations and bonding going on, um, in those
[00:32:07] Jeff: little groups.
[00:32:08] Yeah. That familiarity you get with people just, you know, the, the trust you put in them. So, I mean, when several people told me that they were part of the original Jim Jones and, um, Hillbop Comet team, I didn't even flinch, you know, it was great. Okay. You all did. I just dated myself. So Jim Jones was cyanide.
[00:32:26] Remember like the cold and like the hail comet people that were web developers with the Nike shoes. Okay. See you all. They had to put it with this humor the whole time. Cat and
[00:32:38] Jason: Jason, that might be on a different podcast. Cat. I'm not familiar with
[00:32:42] Jeff: this one. Okay. You guys, just to clarify, there weren't any, we didn't have cults.
[00:32:46] No, there's no cults. Totally see if y'all were paying attention
[00:32:50] Kat: on the podcast. To your guys point, that is a piece of, that's so special, is that you would never interact. There are so many different groups that are put together into [00:33:00] this retreat that are all in one spot where you probably wouldn't have interacted with three quarters of them in your normal day life.
[00:33:05] Yeah, true. Like you don't have the same interest outside of your health, you know, or you're just. Um, actually physically live far apart from each other in different countries. And then you're all put together, all of that set aside the entire time. There wasn't any political talk. You're not talking about really work as far.
[00:33:25] You're sharing like, this is what I do, but you're not like digging into, Oh, work stresses or anything. It's so focused and getting to connect with someone on a deeper level and create a bond that is not as superficial as what we typically. Like, what the normal world has us making, right? You
[00:33:42] Jeff: were able to We got so close so quick.
[00:33:44] It was just like It just, I'm used to that, but like, different personality types and familiarity, like, I mean, one of the, one of the most, um, introvert people on the trip, you know, like, I got the nickname Jeffy from them after [00:34:00] that, which is like, wait, what? That's like a, I mean, like, it's, it was just, it was an amazing experience, these guys, like, and we've been communicating.
[00:34:07] You know, via text message and the Facebook group kind of nonstop and, and like, I think what's big about that is I've been trying to, like, I, I have like apex struggle issues. Like I've got, like, it's just, that's one thing that I got out of the trip was being able to get that encouragement from Dr. A and Ben, like, you know, it's so weird seeing Dr.
[00:34:27] A and Ben in the group, like do a million videos and then seeing them in person and they're giving you like, Right there, right above you, like, form help. I'm like, wait, this is, that really helped me a lot because I just figured I was doing everything wrong, and I was going to hurt myself, and so I just didn't do it.
[00:34:45] And so, what I got out of it was that encouragement, that supervision, saying, hey, you are doing it right, just hop in there, do it, you're doing it. Going, you know, going for it. And so, you know, Apex, I'm, I'm, I've got a lot more [00:35:00] confidence, you know, kind of going into that. It's like, I nailed the FF30X, the eating part of it.
[00:35:06] And I had to kind of like focus on that because like the other piece was like, I'm like, Oh my God, you know, like I'll save it for any day. So that retreat ended up kind of kicking off Apex for me. Um. As well, like that next part of the, to the part of the journey.
[00:35:22] Kat: And you're able to create that accountability group of people who care about you and want you to have success.
[00:35:27] And like you said, you get to keep talking. The retreat happened and you know, three, four days and then it continues. You get to continue. And
[00:35:35] Jeff: I get, I get those reminders from the text message. It's like, Jeff, did you do your apex or how's that going? Or Jason, how, Hey, did you make the, did you prepare that chicken?
[00:35:45] You know, that chicken in advance on the Sunday, like you and I were both dreading. Did you figure out how to do that? Did you like it? It's pretty funny.
[00:35:51] Kat: Yeah. How, let's go Jason. How do you feel like once you came home, you were able to implement all of these different things that you [00:36:00] had learned on the
[00:36:00] Jason: retreat?
[00:36:01] Yeah. So I got home and I mean, I was just on like this emotional high, you know, I needed like just a little time to really kind of decompress and take it all in. And, you know, I mean, there was a lot that happened in a short period of time, a lot of emotion, a lot of. You know, camaraderie, a lot of, lots of different things.
[00:36:25] And so, you know, I, I, I try not to overwhelm myself. I tried to just adopt a couple of little things that I learned and tried to implement quickly because I didn't want to, while it was fresh, I still wanted to. You know, I want to keep the rhythm kind of thing. Um, so, so the breath work for me, the, the four, seven, eight, um, you know, like still something that I continue to do and make an effort to do.
[00:36:51] And, um, you know, that was definitely one thing when I got home, but, uh, just a lot more self reflection and thinking [00:37:00] about that weekend. And, and still, I mean, you know, trying to be better with just communicating, uh, with some of the guys that, that I was. Blessed to meet and, um, just, just continue to try to be better every day.
[00:37:13] I think like, again, if like this podcast, obviously being focused on people who potentially are thinking about, uh, participating in the trip, I would just say, you know, you have to go in with an open mind. And you have to, while you're there, be present, because the time goes quickly, and, you know, there's just so much goodness to take away from that, that you just want to come in and suck up as much of it as you can, because you blink your eye and you're like, shit, I wish I would've did this, and I wish I would've done that.
[00:37:47] So. You know, maybe spent more time with so and so. And so like being extremely intentional, I think is, it is very, very important and critical to the overall experience and having that [00:38:00] open mind and being okay with being uncomfortable because, you know, everyone's, everyone's there just as vulnerable and, and, you know, nervous or whatever is, is you are.
[00:38:10] And, um. It's all designed in a way to be extremely supportive.
[00:38:14] Jeff: I appreciate that. Speaking of kind of like things you didn't know you need, I didn't bring a book or anything to write with or whatever. So getting our little like, oh shoot, I can't. No, you can
[00:38:25] Kat: talk about it. Okay. You show up.
[00:38:27] Jeff: Okay. So we got, we got it.
[00:38:28] So we, cause I'm sure it might change next time, but we got a little goodie bag when we first got there, which, you know, I'm one of those people that loves goodie bags. And so, um, despite all the really good, like the little. The almond squeeze pack things that I ended up using. Oh, those were so good. But the, that, the journal, the FFP journal, um, that ended up playing a big part of my experience unexpectedly.
[00:38:49] You know, when I, when we had some required time alone, being able to have that with me, just take that with me in my bag. And then, um, I think that was [00:39:00] just things like it's, it's wild. All the reflection, all the breath work that we've been doing, um, like, like Jason said, the four, seven, eight, like I've been doing that.
[00:39:10] I'm not kidding. Probably 20 to 30 times a day just to kind of, you know, you know, make my, you know, parrot was a parasympathetic nervous system, calm, calm.
[00:39:22] Kat: If someone's listening and they haven't done Ryan McBurney's breath work, that's in our program. Can you explain to them what the 478 is?
[00:39:31] Jeff: I'm going to butcher the background story that was told me, but, but basically, you know, there was.
[00:39:39] Which, which, uh, was it the Navy SEALs? It was either Navy SEALs or some special forces. They had a, um, they were a lot more successful and had a lot less trauma, PTSD after the, you know, their stents, um, overseas. And so they were looking, okay, okay. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines across all these, what, what do they [00:40:00] do differently?
[00:40:01] And long story short, it came down to the, the breath work that they were doing specifically this 478 where you breathe in for four seconds, you hold it for seven seconds and then breathe out for eight seconds is for some reason that sequence of events, because you have box breaths. People have probably already heard about that before, but being able to do that, help them to, um.
[00:40:24] Majorly calm down their nervous system more successfully than you know other types of breath work And I don't know that like I haven't read a book behind that like I could tell you about James Nestor's breathe all day, but this one I don't know the science behind it, but I know it does work. I Before that I tried, you know, different types of meditation or even, you know, like some people can run and, you know, running makes them not anxious or whatever afterwards.
[00:40:50] Sorry, I was not genetically born that way, but this works. So, um, being able to, I'd say that was. That's, that's a top five [00:41:00] takeaway for me because that's something I'm doing nonstop each day. The four, seven, eight breath.
[00:41:05] Kat: I love that. And it's so great because you get to meet these people, right? You got to do the breath work in person with Ryan McInerney and learn these techniques.
[00:41:13] You were talking about cold plunge. We had Matt there from desert plunge who was just on episode 106 of our podcast. And you got to see, yeah, go check out the plunge. They ship, uh, all across the U S we adore them. And he was able to share his healing story with you. And then you were able to go in as a group and experience it.
[00:41:33] And so like, like you're saying, getting to experience it and then take it back home. And say, okay, how do I go? Yeah,
[00:41:39] Jeff: that was crazy. And, and thanks to UCAP being able to like, he was my, he was my, um, my, um, dorm buddy or whatever you want to call it. Dorm room buddy, being able to get to see the person behind that product.
[00:41:52] And like, You would never get to know these things about people, how much they've overcome, and how, like, they've been there, done [00:42:00] that, and came out, on the other side, successful, and, and, and made something out of, you know, cards that were handled, handed to them long, you know, a long time ago that they didn't get to pick, and making, making things out of that, like, um, Akshay and just some of the other people that spoke, and, All the speakers were, it was crazy.
[00:42:20] It was like, we had our own little version of Ted talk live. I mean, I mean, you know, either went viral, like who, I mean, like when I opened up his book and it was like, who signed the front of it, like the Dalai Lama signed his forward to his book. I'm
[00:42:36] Kat: like, who are you talking about for people
[00:42:39] Jeff: who does that actually?
[00:42:42] Like, I mean, like someone who's like. How do I even meet someone that's going to like, go do, you know, trap the North Pole, successfully break a Guinness Book of World's record. They've already lost fingers and toes prepping for it. I'm like, what in the world? Like, how do [00:43:00] you meet these people? But I'd say that the theme for me was birds of a feather with, with you and Dr.
[00:43:05] A and a lot of people, um, you know, that, that whole crew that, you know, went to, you kind of went to, uh, uh, medical school or whatever with. You all like. It's crazy that who you all surrounded yourself with and the quality of people that came to speak and for those of you on the podcast, like I like to, you know, satires fun, but for real, he has a New York Times bestselling book that in the Ford was signed by the Dalai Lama, like among all these other major New York Times bestsellers.
[00:43:34] And he came and spoke to us like. Oh, hey, you know, Billy Joe Bob, I'm going to come to your cookout. Let's eat potato salad in the South type thing. He shows up and just, he's there and he tells a story. I'm thinking. It was so relatable. A lot of the stuff that he struggled with and the way he thinks about things and kind of, you know, moving forward instead of getting stuck in the [00:44:00] rearview mirror looking backwards.
[00:44:01] How am I going to fix all this stuff in the past? He's looking at Who? What kind of person do I want to come or become in the future? And what do they do to get that way? Let me focus on that. And I might not be that person right now, but I'm going to call, I'm going to treat myself and I'm going to talk to myself like I am that type of person.
[00:44:20] And then like Megan, Megan Rapinoe, you know, women's soccer, Olympic soccer, soccer team. I first heard that concept for her. I believe so strongly in that because if you don't, if you look backwards, you get trapped in thinking of who you were in the past. Yeah. Um, you know, kind of drag you backwards or keep you there just looking forward.
[00:44:37] Like he talked about, like, there were so many different things that resonated with me that he talked about it. I just, like, I can't believe he was actually there in person.
[00:44:46] Kat: It's great to say that you're learning right now, someone listening who's like, Oh, maybe I'm not at exactly where I want my health or wellness to be.
[00:44:55] And it's like, like you're saying, look forward, like, where do you want to be? And surround yourself with those [00:45:00] people. And this is one way that you can create that community, right? Of how you can surround yourself with those people.
[00:45:07] Jason: Well, and I feel like you, you become a product of your environment, right?
[00:45:11] Like good or bad. So, um, you know, another takeaway just from the group is, you know, you, again, and even the Facebook community, I mean, there's so much support there. Um, if depending on where you're at in your process, it's just, you know, there's so many good people willing to help stay, stay grounded and stay focused and stay around those people because good things happen when you're around sharpens
[00:45:35] Jeff: iron birds of a feather and any of the cliches you on the podcast can think of,
[00:45:41] Kat: but it's all podcasts.
[00:45:43] Keep them coming. Keep them going.
[00:45:47] Jeff: So the funny part about that. So his name is actually, he actually turned into a verb. So whenever we were having a hard time doing something that we can't go out of our comfort zone, like cold plunge, we were like, okay, [00:46:00] just actually that shit. Oh, shizzle. We're on podcast.
[00:46:02] I'll say that
[00:46:03] Kat: shizzle.
[00:46:08] Jeff: The verb, it was just, it was pretty inspirational.
[00:46:12] Jason: I jumped out of the cold plunge and I said, I just out shaved it. That's
[00:46:14] Kat: right. That's right. It's such a good mix too, because you know, you have these opportunities like the cold plunge, you're going on hikes and you're pushing yourself, but then you also have the place to rest and recover.
[00:46:25] So it's like, okay, I can push myself. And push my nervous system and push my, I'll give all my physical strength to this. And then I know that there is going to be another activity that's going to restore me and bring me back
[00:46:37] Jeff: so that I can come back. Absolutely. That's a really good point. The back and see, that's some of the ninja stuff you all did.
[00:46:44] So the part that I liked about the unplanned, but planned is. Like masking all those details from us. So we didn't worry or try to do anything about it. I love tell you all the night before you would give us this. I'm a big UI, UX fan. So [00:47:00] design's a big deal for me. So just this really nice, almost like a four by six.
[00:47:05] of the agenda for the next day that's really clear, clean, like, I'm going to nerd out, but like white space, white space is great with these timelines of things that are going to happen. And I didn't think about it till now, but you're right. The sequence of how you did them as opposed to just, okay, this morning, we're just going to.
[00:47:22] Go kill it. We're going to do a certain, um, well, I can't give it away, but we're going to do a certain event that's really like high energy heavy, and then we're going to do another one and then we're going to hike Mount Everest, you know, like you all spaced it out really well. And I kind of didn't really think about that till now.
[00:47:39] Jason: But a lot of good thought and psychology put into just how it was all laid out. And like, after you do it, and then reflect back on it, you're like, You all should have,
[00:47:48] Jeff: if only you all were doctors and had all that stuff figured out.
[00:47:55] Kat: We have a good team. We put our heart and soul into it. So it's nice to hear it right now. Say it again. [00:48:00] Tell us again. It was, it was so great, right?
[00:48:03] Jeff: I mean, all that stuff didn't, didn't just happen organically, like, it was just, I thought it was all just provident, divine providence. You know, like, it's Something like that.
[00:48:13] Jason: Something like that. And I do, I do have to say, and I don't think this is like a spoil, but I, I was like, and I'm just a sucker for personalized stuff. That water bottle with my name on it is like
[00:48:28] This is
[00:48:28] Kat: actually awesome. We tell people you can order our water bottles on the website, which is great. And they're black and they're beautiful. And the woman who makes them for us, it's a small business. So please purchase them. It's a wonderful support.
[00:48:40] Jeff: And they were more than 21 ounces, which like they broke, you broke through the 21 ounce
[00:48:45] Kat: ceiling.
[00:48:46] So if you go to the retreat, you get the special edition color that can only be received at the retreat. Great. So the fit mother one.
[00:48:54] Jason: With your name on it. Hold on. Keep
[00:48:56] Kat: talking. Okay. Oh, and Jeff's going to grab his and the fit father one is blue. So [00:49:00] it's like your little badge. Like that you earned your blue water bottle, which is wonderful.
[00:49:06] Yeah.
[00:49:07] Jason: My wife said, Oh, bottle with your name on it. I mean, you have everything embroidered and your name put on. So this is perfect for you. And I was like, you're
[00:49:15] Jeff: absolutely right. Oh my God. It's in the, it's in the dishwasher. Are you kidding me? What kind of timing is that? That's Great. Imaginary. Awesome.
[00:49:24] Kat: Yes. People are listening for those of you listening. They can definitely just imagine there's a ball doozy blue water bottle that he had here.
[00:49:32] Jeff: Just great.
[00:49:34] Kat: Let's wrap this up with your last kind of closing thoughts that you would like to tell someone who is thinking about the retreat or even thinking about the program and jumping in and they are listening right now.
[00:49:45] And I will start with Jason. I know I put you on the
[00:49:50] Jason: spot. No, all good. No, I mean, again, I think alluding back to a lot of the things I've said in the podcast thus far, I [00:50:00] think, you know, not to sound like a broken record, but I think coming in with an open mind, I think You know, pushing yourself and challenging yourself to be better, uh, being okay with being uncomfortable because everyone there is feeling, thinking a lot of the same things that you are, but the real true growth comes during those times.
[00:50:22] And so if you don't know someone, not a big deal, I knew literally no one. And left with 11, 12, like really, really good friends, brothers that I could call. And I know that at any given time and get advice, get help, get support, um, you know, challenge yourself, push yourself, you know, I just think there's so much more.
[00:50:46] To fit father, um, then just like working out, right. And, uh, a perfect plate. Like they're the holistic approach and the way this was done. I, I think a lot of people [00:51:00] would agree that we're on the, the, the retreat with us. Like it was way different than what anyone expected. I think some of the guys that love to work out, we're like, yo, where's the weight?
[00:51:08] Like I want to work out. And, you know, we, we did a little of that and that was awesome, but like, there's just so much more to overall wellness that you may not be in touch with. And this is just something, the experience alone, uh, opened my mind and spirit and, um, in ways that I, I just didn't think, you know, we're going to happen on the trip.
[00:51:30] So extremely grateful, uh, for the opportunity, blessed to be a part of the group and connect with these guys and. I would just encourage anyone, you know, if you're kind of in that space where you, you're unsure, um, take it from Jeff and I, um, you know, we're living proof that you can go and not know anyone and have a great time and build meaningful relationships and, um, and suck up as much as you possibly can out of it while you're there really [00:52:00] being intentional and, um, you know, some of the events, whether you've.
[00:52:05] Feel uncomfortable or not do them and because you'll,
[00:52:08] Jeff: you'll look back and you, I think for me, like I, I'll just, I'll just tell them there's no way you will listening that you all could have stopped the program or this event any more than me. Like if you're, if you, if you spend more than 50, if you want to spend more than 50 hours.
[00:52:23] Go for it. I did that work for you. So I'll just cut to the chase. FF 30 X. Everything's research based. I can give you the pub med article for all these things. Dr. A cat, Ben, everyone legit school background. I already did that work for you. Do it. Like Jason said, dive in head first. If you're, if you, if you're a toad dipper.
[00:52:42] Screw it. Dive in and do that. You'll be thankful afterwards. It's like, you know, I wish I wouldn't, my mom would have made me play piano when I was in third grade and then I would know how to do this. Now it's same regret. Do it. Just play, learn how to play piano. Do it. Like dive in and do that. Get it done.
[00:52:56] Be okay with it being clunky. I focused on the diet piece first [00:53:00] up front. That's all I did before hopping into Apex. Thank goodness I did it that way because I nailed that diet and I hit my goal and then that gives me success to build on to hop into the apex piece. Um, as you did, like some people can do all these things at once.
[00:53:14] Chris, Jim, like they're all monsters. They can do OSF, like they just, some people aren't and that's me and that's okay. So be okay with being clunky. And then like, you don't have to do. I'd say it's better to do one thing at a time than to get overwhelmed, and the program allows you to do that. And then you've got all the accountability emails coming, and the people in the group.
[00:53:37] For those of you that haven't done it, there's literally hundreds of posts per day. So, you've got all the accountability, so don't, you know, dive in the retreat and the program. There we go. That's all I have to say about that.
[00:53:48] Kat: There it is. This was great. Thank you so much for the two of you for being here.
