This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I’m coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast. Welcome back, everyone. Today’s episode is Showing Up Matters: The Power Of Supporting Students Beyond The Classroom. But before we get into it, let’s talk about three things I’m thankful for. The first thing I’m thankful for is my vehicle. Having a reliable vehicle makes it possible to get where I need to go, especially when driving late at night or heading to student events. It’s easy to take that for granted, but I’m truly thankful for it. The second thing I’m thankful for is warm clothes at a chilly football game. I had a warm hoodie on last night, and it helped keep the chill away so I could enjoy watching the game. Sometimes the small comforts make a big difference. The third thing I’m thankful for is calmness in my home. After busy days and long weeks, having peace at home helps me recharge and reflect. I’m grateful for that sense of calm. Now let’s get into today’s topic. Showing up matters. Supporting students beyond the classroom truly makes a difference. One thing I always tell my students is that once you’re my student, you’re always my student. Whether they’re current students or former students, that connection doesn’t end when the school year does. Showing up builds connection. When students see their teacher in the stands at a football game, at a concert, or at a community event, it sends a clear message that they matter beyond the classroom. Students remember the moments when teachers show up. I attended a football game last night after students invited me. When they realized I was in the stands cheering them on, their faces lit up. A wave from the bleachers and a thumbs up made a bigger impact than any lecture ever could. These small moments build long-term trust. When teachers show up, students often respond differently back in the classroom. They feel seen, supported, and valued. Balance matters, though. Teachers wear many hats, and it’s not possible to attend everything. It’s okay not to be everywhere. What matters is showing up authentically when you can. I wasn’t able to attend every game this season, but I made it to one. When life allows, showing up intentionally matters. Students notice the effort, especially when they know you have a full plate. Showing up also models balance. It shows students how to care for others while managing commitments. Presence doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be real. There’s a ripple effect when teachers show up. Presence communicates care louder than any lesson. Students begin to see school as part of their larger world. They feel believed in. Even small follow-ups matter. Mentioning a touchdown, a great block, or a performance tells students you noticed. Those moments strengthen classroom culture and deepen relationships. Teachers can’t be everywhere, but when you show up even once, it can create a lifelong memory for a student. It’s about connection, not perfection. When we show up for students outside the classroom, we strengthen everything that happens inside the classroom. Thank you for listening.
