>> Brandon Tanev: Hey, this is Brandon Tanner with Seattle Kraken, and you're listening to Jason
Speaker:birdies.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: We are back this week on chasing
Speaker:birdies. And, it is an eventful week, kicking off the week
Speaker:here on Thursday with the FedEx cup, kicking off
Speaker:live going on down at the greenbrier. You're in Florida, I'm
Speaker:in St. Martin, and we're still getting this shit done.
Speaker:My man. What's shaking?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Not much, buddy. Just came off the boat, did a
Speaker:little, sand dollar digging.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, you better put that in your pocket.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, I didn't know. Did you know that
Speaker:there's. Sand dollars are a living thing? Did
Speaker:you know that?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, I did, actually.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I did not know that. I did not know that.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, you can tell. I mean, it's not like
Speaker:starfish where they kind of creep and crawl,
Speaker:but they're still living.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. So I'm coming to you live from a bunk bed,
Speaker:in Florida. So today's
Speaker:episode is always brought to you by
Speaker:our boys at redvanley. So go check them
Speaker:out@redvanley.com. give them a little
Speaker:click. I just played no member guests with beat cats. I
Speaker:can't tell you how many people at yawk had these shorts on.
Speaker:Did.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Dude. Yeah. You made your grandparents this
Speaker:summer here, your first member guest, middle of
Speaker:August. So how'd it go?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, we came out of, swinging. We won our first
Speaker:two matches. 5454. Lost our
Speaker:third match. Six three to the eventual
Speaker:overall champions danko,
Speaker:and Tyler Tracy. Congratulations to
Speaker:them. they won in the shootout, which I'll get into
Speaker:that. and then, Brendan and I were officially handed
Speaker:our worst member guest loss of all time
Speaker:to mark Torgic. Seven and a half to
Speaker:one and a half. We got beat.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, I mean, in all fairness, they.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Played out of this world. It's just
Speaker:because we. We made bogeys and
Speaker:they didn't have to make, birdies.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, that's what I was going to say. I mean, it's basically be cats
Speaker:and a half. Half of you. I mean, you barely
Speaker:have a left ankle right now still, so. But,
Speaker:I mean, it's good for you to get back in competition a little
Speaker:bit.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, that was right, bud. So glad you paid attention to me in
Speaker:surgery.
Speaker:but we had some two
Speaker:happenings at the member guest that I've never witnessed
Speaker:before. One, a member knocked his own
Speaker:partner out in the parking lot. So
Speaker:that was interesting. completely knocked him out cold, bleeding
Speaker:from the face. After he knocked him out cold, went to the pool
Speaker:and started basically floating.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: he did not care.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He did not care. Apparently, he told.
Speaker:Said, you don't
Speaker:disrespect the champion at his country
Speaker:club. Which my question to him is, if you're the champion, why were
Speaker:you in the pool while the shootout was going on? But that's neither near
Speaker:her there, right? so that
Speaker:happened, which was interesting. Never saw police
Speaker:and ambulance and all that jazz. And then in the
Speaker:shootout there. There's always supposed to be. They do it
Speaker:like Pete died. Right? Like, you get on 18. There's two
Speaker:teams there.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yep. Yep.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: We get on 18. There's four teams there.
Speaker:So four teams are playing the
Speaker:final hole in the shootout. You have two
Speaker:holes, two groups do
Speaker:five, four. Two groups do four three. What would you do in
Speaker:that situation?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: The four three.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The four threes go into shootout to win,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Is that a trick question?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: They took the, five fours and had them go to a chip
Speaker:off, and then one team advanced from there. So that
Speaker:team ended up winning the whole thing. Who was Danko and Tyler
Speaker:Tracy, which is crazy to me that they were the
Speaker:highest two team. Look, you're up. You're done. You're back.
Speaker:sorry, guys. Your bags. Pack your bags. You're done.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah. Head on down 51.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. So, anyways, it was great,
Speaker:though, dude. Beat cats, had a, I don't know how much fun he had. I
Speaker:mean, he was. His back was really. He was doing a
Speaker:lot of work.
Speaker:So, how's your trip going?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: But I'm glad. I'm happy to hear that you're back out there swinging it, making
Speaker:an appearance. People are seeing Jonathan Pepe on a golf course again,
Speaker:so that's always a good thing. And I look forward to fall golf with you,
Speaker:man. And I'll tell you what, dude, I'm bracing here for. By the
Speaker:time this episode airs, hopefully everything's.
Speaker:But I'm bracing for my first tropical
Speaker:storm, here in the Caribbean at St. Martin.
Speaker:Apparently, something's coming up here earlier this week,
Speaker:so we'll see what's happening. But all is well, man. I did not
Speaker:bring the golf sticks on this trip. Take a little time
Speaker:off. But, you know, I had a good chance to catch up on a
Speaker:PGA tour. Nothing too exciting with Aaron Rye winning,
Speaker:there, but I am stoked to watch the, St. Jude
Speaker:classic this weekend. Loaded field. dude, I gotta tell
Speaker:you something, though. Have you seen what's going on with
Speaker:Graham McDowell?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. Crazy.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I mean, a nasal deconstruct congestion, and I'm just
Speaker:like, you know, if. If you're into drugs
Speaker:or something, just say it. But. But apparently it was nothing
Speaker:like that. It was just an over the counter thing and,
Speaker:He's missing the old white.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's crazy. Yeah. Are you heading down there?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: But.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: No but. No but I'll still be in the Caribbean.
Speaker:But tropical, Or, I'm sorry.
Speaker:Tropical. $125,000
Speaker:fee. Fine. Crazy.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Fine. That's crazy.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: But our guest today on chasing birdies probably knows a thing
Speaker:or two about fines, but the NHL really doesn't
Speaker:impose them too often. we still can
Speaker:relish in the fact that the NHL allows fighting, which we
Speaker:spoke about before, but Brandon Tanf from the Seattle
Speaker:Kraken is joining us here on chase and
Speaker:birdies. And I'll tell you what, man, it was good to connect with the man
Speaker:again, huh? Huh? Good.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: M catching up with the old boy.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, a lot of good stories here from bt and whatnot.
Speaker:So, of course, he's a golf nut and
Speaker:we'll dive into some topics there, but, I don't know, man. Let's take it
Speaker:on over here.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Let's roll it all over to Brandon Tanf on
Speaker:the hot mic.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: All right, we're back. This week on chasing
Speaker:birdies. We got a puck chaser joining us
Speaker:again here on chasing birdies. And I would say what's
Speaker:cracking? Because that would be appropriate, but we
Speaker:got Brandon Taniff joining us here from the Seattle
Speaker:Kraken, formerly of the Pittsburgh
Speaker:penguins. For the local yokels out there, my man bt, what's shaking,
Speaker:baby?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Not a whole lot. It's been a while since,
Speaker:you fellas, but it's great to see your faces and
Speaker:kind, of yuck it up here, hot stove, for a little bit about things.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I know, bud, it's been. I mean, listen, I feel
Speaker:like I'm.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Looking at the two, the same person a little bit.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Could be pretty good. Both, pretty good golfers bashed a little bit
Speaker:better than me, but pretty, decent looking guys.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, he's got six inches on me, vertically
Speaker:speaking, but also probably bigger legs, but, The hair. Yeah,
Speaker:maybe. I don't know, man. Like, I have a
Speaker:thing. I don't know about you, but I've had this thought of, like, I'm
Speaker:actually going to cut my hair. I've had long hair now for
Speaker:seven years. Every time I go,
Speaker:in fact, tomorrow I'm going to get a haircut. And I'm thinking in my mind, am I going
Speaker:to do it? I can't do it.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Like, I feel you. Everyone tells me like,
Speaker:you should cut it. You should cut it. And I always think about cutting it, and then
Speaker:once I get to, in the chair, I never do it. I
Speaker:can never pull trigger on it.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I will just do a little trim.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: That's exactly true.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The long hair, for what you do in your
Speaker:life with the warm ups is
Speaker:crucial. That long hair.
Speaker:But in the NHL, are you allowed to go out with no buckets on
Speaker:now in warm ups?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Is there a certain,
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: So you have to be grandfathered in now? like,
Speaker:I've been to the point where I'm allowed to go, no buckets. I took a puck off the
Speaker:forehead a couple years ago that socked out to get
Speaker:stitches, before the start of the game. But, I mean, it's. It's
Speaker:so cool to be buzzing around there and then, like, you're
Speaker:just got your. Your hair in the wind and, you're just
Speaker:free flowing. It's like one of those things where it's like, oh, damn, this
Speaker:is pretty sweet.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I mean, I'm telling you right now, boys, that's one thing I want
Speaker:to do before I die. Get on the ice for a warm up, chew
Speaker:big piece of bubble gum, let the gray hair
Speaker:flow a little bit. What?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Bud, how did you get hit? By putting warm ups,
Speaker:like, one of your teammates or what happened?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, so I was skating by the net, and, like, you never want
Speaker:to go too close. And, like, I kind of turned off, and then guy
Speaker:ripped one off the crossbar and just, boom, right off the forehead. And I was
Speaker:like, I'm, Like, God damn.
Speaker:Grabbed my face right into the locker room.
Speaker:Stitches coach comes in, tells the starting
Speaker:lineup. I end up starting that game, and I'm,
Speaker:like, sitting there. I'm, like, looking at myself. I'm like, jesus.
Speaker:But you know what? It could have been worse. Maybe plucked the teeth or
Speaker:somewhere else.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, that have been. That's like
Speaker:Matt Barkowski. He still don't have a fucking tooth. He
Speaker:walks around with one tooth.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, I think. I think he does it just because it makes him.
Speaker:He never wants to put it in. And Bart likes the little
Speaker:conversation starter. That's. Yeah, that's halfway there.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's his. That's his, dude. Have you
Speaker:talked to him lately? I have.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I, talked to him last week. We always. We always
Speaker:shoot the shit, and I always ask him how his golf
Speaker:games doing, and, he always asks mine, but, you know,
Speaker:Bart's awesome. He played with my brother, in
Speaker:Vancouver, and then that's how I would be able to
Speaker:kind of touch base them with. I signed in Pitt and Jesse
Speaker:and, him were great to me when I spent my time in
Speaker:Pittsburgh. So it's nice to have a good
Speaker:friend in Barton. He's a, pretty. Not bad golfer, as much as
Speaker:I hate to say it.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, that's, well, how we met you in Pittsburgh. So,
Speaker:I mean.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, well, I mean, the first time I think I met
Speaker:bash, we were taking that junior,
Speaker:tangle, and I was driving up to play.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, you got the sprinter, you didn't.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Have the sprint, you didn't have the sprinter back then. We were sitting
Speaker:in the back of the back of the. Of the car. We
Speaker:were drinking fosters oil cans.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Dude, I still fucking remember that when you guys rolled
Speaker:in there and. Dude, pep.
Speaker:So he plays lefty. He's lefty.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, but I was there. Like, I was there.
Speaker:I played golf with tango.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: You were there.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: You drove number one.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: We. Yes, we were just talking about that a couple weeks ago with junior
Speaker:because Jr didn't believe it, but I I saw it. I mean,
Speaker:he hit it over the left trees,
Speaker:and for a
Speaker:lefty right, we could talk about
Speaker:that. But that, dude. No, you did.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, I remember. Cuz junior was like, you didn't do it. And I was like, I
Speaker:remember I hit one. It was like, over the left.
Speaker:Like, no, I just hit another one. So. So
Speaker:I probably didn't make bogey quite honest with you. And
Speaker:I snap hooked my neck, my next one into the right
Speaker:trees, and then the caddy came running out. He's like, he was giving the
Speaker:thumbs up, and I'm like, I'm like, perfect. Sounds good to
Speaker:me.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: And then. Yeah, that's exactly right. But.
Speaker:Well, junior, updates on you from, you
Speaker:know, from junior with. With respect to
Speaker:Tanf.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: We saw. We saw him last year. We went down, came down to
Speaker:Pittsburgh, for a day or two. We played some golf, and he had
Speaker:the sprinter brand buzzing. And it was.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It was good times that damn couple
Speaker:rounds, but that word sprinter
Speaker:just makes my skin curl because it's
Speaker:like, dude, just. I know how you get
Speaker:in here. I'm gonna take the sprinter. I know, dude, I know you're gonna take the
Speaker:sprinter 30 minutes down the road. Like, it's good. do
Speaker:you want the sprinter to come get you, bash? How about I send you the sprinter down to
Speaker:Morgantown, I'll come back and get you, and then we'll do this. It's like,
Speaker:dude, I can drive. Like,
Speaker:I know people do nowadays.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: They drive if I had. If I had one of those things. I don't
Speaker:know if I. I don't know if I could leave it. he picked me up in that last
Speaker:year. I was like, oh, my God. I. That thing is
Speaker:incredible.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, dude. It's. It's. It's sweet. And he, He's, like, way
Speaker:too generous. Like, Pep's right? Like, we'll be. We were going
Speaker:up to see a show in Pittsburgh, and he's like, I
Speaker:send it down and pick you up, but. But I'm like, I'm not getting turned up
Speaker:like you do. I'll just drive back. I appreciate
Speaker:the offer, but Junior is the type of guy. Dude, I'm.
Speaker:I was bitching him one day about how I hate the
Speaker:boxes in my garage. Like, Amazon boxes,
Speaker:cardboard boxes. And he's like, dude, I got something
Speaker:for you. I'm like, what is it? I thought he was gonna tell me something, like
Speaker:how to fold him. He's like, what's your address? So
Speaker:I gave it to him, and a package shows
Speaker:up two days later, obviously in a box, which I hate,
Speaker:from Amazon. It's like this frickin electric
Speaker:knife that you just use to chop up
Speaker:cardboard boxes. My man just sent it to me. It was like, what
Speaker:a good friend.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah. Jr. Jr. Is an awesome dude.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He, love.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I love grinding him. Grinding him.
Speaker:His golf game. That's my favorite thing. Grinding him
Speaker:both.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: He sent me a nice little package when I was sitting on the couch, but.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Exactly. That's what I mean. Very thoughtful.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: So I will give him that when.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: You get him and tango together. Dude, it's like a comedy
Speaker:hour. I can't even. I can't even breathe because I
Speaker:laugh so hard.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It's exhausting.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, it's like.
Speaker:Well, he was telling me about. You guys had a, golf
Speaker:at, Nemico. And was it last couple
Speaker:weeks ago?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, three weeks ago.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: You guys were playing some good golf, and then you guys had
Speaker:some, some drinks buzzing, and you guys were shooting this shit.
Speaker:Storytelling, hot stove. And said it was just incredible time.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, we did that for the, two man event we had here.
Speaker:And, Man, we had a great turnout. We should have.
Speaker:Everybody had a great time. We played two rounds of golf, had
Speaker:skins.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, come on. It's a hop, skip, and a jump.
Speaker:I'll make it up there next year.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, let's send the sprinter.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: But that's the deal because we're adding a couple more spots, so.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: The only way. Only way. I'm coming. If you do sense the
Speaker:spreader.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Oh, shit.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I'll play with Bart Bartley. Play together.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah. There you go. There you go. You know
Speaker:the funny thing about Bart, my dad played with him at Pete die
Speaker:and my dad said he's never seen anyone drink as many beers in
Speaker:his life in one setting. And my dad's like, not really
Speaker:conservative, but he's not wild, but he's like, this guy
Speaker:just starts fucking drinking, right at 530 in the morning.
Speaker:Never stops. Like, yeah, that's
Speaker:it.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I think that's where we all met. We met at Pete Dye in West
Speaker:Virginia. Covid, that we playing that two, man group.
Speaker:Yeah, Covid, we were playing up in West Virginia. Noah,
Speaker:it was no Austin and Bart. We came when I was four,
Speaker:so we played up there and we had a. We had a hell
Speaker:of a time up there. That was a good. That was good shit.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, man. That was awesome.
Speaker:So what you been going on, man?
Speaker:Offseason? How was the season? I mean, were you stoked
Speaker:to go to Seattle? New team pep? Correct me if I'm
Speaker:wrong, but what didn't Brandon go there when Flurry
Speaker:went as well?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I don't think I
Speaker:went to, Yeah, Hayden and I went to Seattle together,
Speaker:so we were taking both in the expansion draft. I
Speaker:mean, you. When I signed at Pittsburgh, I
Speaker:signed for six years. So I was extremely excited to
Speaker:get down to the city and the organization, the franchise, I mean,
Speaker:storied franchise, so many Stanley cups. I mean,
Speaker:you're playing with Sidney Crosby, getting Malkin,
Speaker:Chris Latang. And then you meet so many great
Speaker:people, outside the rink. You know, there's
Speaker:you guys, other people as well. And it was close to home. It was four hour
Speaker:drive. So there were so many advantages and
Speaker:amazing things that, you know, that came with being a part of the Penguins.
Speaker:And then, you know, obviously when you get taken into
Speaker:Seattle, it's a change of scenery. It's. It's part of the
Speaker:business. You know, things happen so often,
Speaker:and especially in our game. You know,
Speaker:no matter who you are or what you've done for an
Speaker:organization, you know, things can change of a snap
Speaker:the fingers. But, you know, in that saying, it was. It was pretty
Speaker:cool to go down to a new franchise, a new city,
Speaker:and start to build, you know, a hockey team in, a
Speaker:city that's really never had an NHL
Speaker:franchise. So in that sense, it was. It was
Speaker:amazing. You're. You're part of a new franchise, a new city. You know,
Speaker:you get to build this team. You get taken in an
Speaker:expansion draft, and you see how much it means to the people, the
Speaker:city, the fans are unbelievable. It's
Speaker:such a good sports, town. But at the same time,
Speaker:it was a little sad leaving because you leading
Speaker:so many good friends behind, in that sense. So it's one of those things
Speaker:where it was a little bittersweet, but you were so excited to get down to
Speaker:Seattle and start this new journey and build
Speaker:this new franchise in a new city.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, that's. I mean, that would have to be a little
Speaker:bit. You get kind of settled
Speaker:in. We talk about this all the time with these athletes. You get settled
Speaker:into, you know, whatever, a routine or a city,
Speaker:and. And next thing you know, you get the call, you're.
Speaker:You're on the go. Hey, I'm getting traded. Or in this
Speaker:case, you know, however this expansion worked, I don't know, but
Speaker:that would be the hardest thing, I feel like, about being pro athlete
Speaker:because you just. I don't know. I. I don't.
Speaker:I don't want to say. You just never know, but you really don't at the end
Speaker:of the day.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: No, I mean, it's. It's for sure tough. I mean, especially
Speaker:guys that, you know, had families and with young kids and, you
Speaker:know, you're picking up and moving, it can be a little tough
Speaker:at times and getting organized, finding a place or
Speaker:maybe finding schools or, you know, getting them into
Speaker:routines and situated. now, for
Speaker:me, it was easy, you know, just pack your bags and kind
Speaker:of pick up and go. There was no really,
Speaker:like, getting organized with family and kids
Speaker:in that sense. So for me, it was a lot easier than, I would
Speaker:say, other guys that, you know, had families. But, I
Speaker:mean, Seattle was. Was great in the sense of kind of
Speaker:putting us towards people, like a real estate
Speaker:agent or, you know, giving this understanding of what we
Speaker:kind of needed to do and anything we needed help with, you know, it
Speaker:was, you know, right away, answers. There were phone calls.
Speaker:So it's one of those things where it's as
Speaker:difficult it is, you know, the team
Speaker:and the organization had the right people, helping us manage
Speaker:that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, that's the difficult thing is, like you said,
Speaker:you don't know the situation you're going into. None of you
Speaker:guys knew what you were going into in
Speaker:Seattle, and you've had some
Speaker:successes in three and a half
Speaker:years of an expansion team. So that has to make you
Speaker:feel good because you've been there since day one.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, it's, it's great. I mean, the first year I think,
Speaker:was a little difficult, but you saw how passionate and, like,
Speaker:excited the city, the fans were to. To have us
Speaker:there. It's, you know, there was games that were. Were really
Speaker:tough, you know, that we weren't playing well, and. But the fans, the
Speaker:excitement, and. Never left. I think how
Speaker:great the people and the town is with. With all sports. The
Speaker:Seahawks, the Mariners, there's so many great,
Speaker:you know, sports organizations within Seattle,
Speaker:and, we were very lucky to have, you know, very passionate fans.
Speaker:And then second year, we went to the second round of
Speaker:the playoffs, lost in game seven, which was. Which was awesome. And,
Speaker:I mean, you're. You're fighting for the Stanley cup.
Speaker:It's wore out there. And then, last year didn't
Speaker:go as planned of us not making the playoffs,
Speaker:but there's ups and downs is, you know,
Speaker:professional sports, from year to year. But I think you all
Speaker:get excited and hungry now, at least when. When
Speaker:August and September roll around, because the season is right around the corner
Speaker:for us.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, it's. It's. It's coming fast.
Speaker:It's coming fast.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Literally, snap your fingers and, you know, it's
Speaker:almost the end of summer.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, then that's the thing, too. If you have a deep run,
Speaker:then it's really short.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah. I mean, like, we train with a, bunch of the oilers at our
Speaker:gym. At our gym, and they got back, like.
Speaker:And now it's like they've been trained for a couple weeks now, and it's
Speaker:like there's really no time to kind of
Speaker:kick the feet up and relax. Maybe you have a week
Speaker:or a week and a half or two weeks, as opposed
Speaker:to maybe taking four weeks off, you know, if you don't make the
Speaker:playoffs and you're. You're right back on the ice, you're
Speaker:right back working out, and next thing you know, you're. You're on a flight back
Speaker:to your respective city.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, that's. I don't know, but, you know, that's why you get paid
Speaker:the big bucks, you know what I mean?
Speaker:Like, you got guys that are going to retire at 33,
Speaker:35. You know what?
Speaker:Kick it back for a week and a half, crack the. Crack the
Speaker:pacifico, and then fucking hit the road. Hit the ice again,
Speaker:you know.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, it's, I mean, we're all fortunate enough to do what we
Speaker:love, and like you said, you know, those. Those times where you do have a
Speaker:week off, you know, whether it's you sit by the lake or you go
Speaker:on the golf course, hang out with your buddies, have a couple beers, and
Speaker:just. You'll have your downtown, sit by the fire, you know,
Speaker:kind of shoot the shit like we're doing having a hot stove with the boys.
Speaker:And those are the simple things that. That mean the most.
Speaker:That kind of, you know, get you back to where you need to be before you have
Speaker:to go do whatever it is you do.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I love it, man.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: For you. When you went to Seattle,
Speaker:you had some familiar faces on the team. Jared McCann.
Speaker:I don't know who else went from the penguins.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Alexiak used to play, on the
Speaker:penguins. I, hadn't met him before, but,
Speaker:like you said, canner was with me in Pittsburgh.
Speaker:And I think, you know, it's tough
Speaker:for. For us to kind of all, like, mesh
Speaker:and blend. But I think, you know, in any. Any sport
Speaker:or any environment where you're meeting new people,
Speaker:you just thrust yourself into it and just,
Speaker:you know, break that barrier as quick as you can. Because the
Speaker:faster you can do it, the easier it becomes.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I feel like I'm on the bench right now, boys.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Huh?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Huh?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Look at him drinking that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Hey, boy. Hey, coach. Am I getting back in or what?
Speaker:I haven't had a shift in ten minutes.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: He carries that water bottle around, it kills me.
Speaker:I mean, you're. You're how old now, 30?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: 32.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: 32. So, I mean, you still got time in your career.
Speaker:You've had a very successful career in the NHL.
Speaker:And for some reason, I remember. And I didn't even look this up. Cause I
Speaker:just remember you playing at Providence.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I mean, I would. Every time I see Providence now, I think of you. Cause
Speaker:just from when we first met, I just always kind of connected there.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: But, yeah, those were, simple and great times back
Speaker:in the day.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I just flew back from there today.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Were you out there? Newport or Narragansett or playing
Speaker:some golf?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: No, I work, with a jewelry
Speaker:store there. Providence, diamond.
Speaker:And they are in
Speaker:Cranston?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, Cranston, Rhode island.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. So, we had a dynamite meal last night.
Speaker:Some italian restaurant that was, like, top 100 in the
Speaker:world, I guess, for a long time. The best food
Speaker:I have ever had, Italian wise, in a long
Speaker:time.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: They've got, that strip there, federal hill, where
Speaker:all the italian places are. It's unbelievable food.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yes, yes. So good.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I've never been to Rhode island.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Like, summertime. It's
Speaker:so beautiful. There's a good golf courses, like beaches,
Speaker:like Narragansett, Newporthouse. I guess you
Speaker:can compare them to, like, Boston, Cape Cod,
Speaker:Nantucket. Just kind of, you know,
Speaker:hour or two away from. From where those are.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: So you offseason in Toronto, or do you normally.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Like, where offseason? Toronto. It's, with how
Speaker:short the off seasons are, you know, get,
Speaker:depending on, like, how far you go on
Speaker:playoffs or what you do in the summertime, it's nice to be back
Speaker:home with. With family and friends and try to spend as
Speaker:much time as you can with them.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: And your brother, does he still play in the league?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: He just signed, with the leafs for six
Speaker:years.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: No shit.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah. So he's back home now.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Hometown.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Ah, boy. Coming home. So our
Speaker:family's super pumped, excited. you know, he's.
Speaker:He's happy to be back home, too. it's exciting for him, you know. I
Speaker:mean, you know, wherever you're from, like, you always
Speaker:dream about putting your, you know, your hometown
Speaker:jersey on, and, you know, he gets to do that now, so it's a pretty special
Speaker:moment for him.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: That's fucking awesome, man.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, it's. It's, he's. He's pretty pumped up. It's gonna be.
Speaker:It'll be a lot, I'm sure, at times for him, but, you
Speaker:know, once he's. He's been around long enough to know how to
Speaker:deal with things, so it, it'll be good. He's. He's super
Speaker:pumped.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I think that's the thing, too, that you gotta get used to
Speaker:not answering for all the ticket requests and things like that,
Speaker:because when you're playing in your hometown, that's
Speaker:a pain in the ass, dude. Because you got friends now that you haven't talked in
Speaker:25 years to, and they want tickets and
Speaker:things like that.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, I'm sure that'll be, a little difficult, like.
Speaker:But I think once you get into the flow of things in the season
Speaker:and, you know, he's busy and he's with his
Speaker:family and. And just playing games and
Speaker:concentrate on that, I think, you know, keep your mind,
Speaker:away from distractions, I guess, if you want to say,
Speaker:like, you know, that.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Aren't gonna. But I mean, like. Like
Speaker:anything in. In life, you just do what you
Speaker:need to do and have an understanding of what makes it successful. So
Speaker:I think that's probably, what he's thinking. But,
Speaker:I mean, play for your hometown. Team's pretty. Pretty
Speaker:dialed.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's pretty sweet. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Pep.
Speaker:We got a pretty good Toronto story.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Which one?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: The boat.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, my God. Tuna tom. So
Speaker:we went to, Toronto, and correct me, bash, if I'm
Speaker:wrong anywhere here in this story, but we went to
Speaker:Toronto for my bachelor party.
Speaker:this is 20
Speaker:1415.
Speaker:But I was married. It'd be ten years next year.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I'll tell you how good of a husband I am. but we're
Speaker:gonna go fishing. We go out Friday night in
Speaker:Toronto, and then we're gonna go fishing on,
Speaker:the lake.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Lake ontario. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah. So we're gonna go salmon fishing.
Speaker:So the real deal is out with us
Speaker:and can't find
Speaker:them. Morning of, I'm like, you know what? Screw it. Do you
Speaker:know justin fox?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I don't know.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Okay, so he. He was his best friend from
Speaker:toronto, and we found Justin fox, and
Speaker:we were good, but nailer was out,
Speaker:so. Dude, we are. I'm not
Speaker:kidding you. We're 3 miles out in lake ontario.
Speaker:Would you say it was that far, bash?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I would.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I would. no cell phone service, no
Speaker:nothing. We're out in lake ontario fishing. We're catching
Speaker:salmon. We're getting eaten a lot. But
Speaker:bugs we did. And the captain comes up
Speaker:and says, hey, do you guys have a friend that's coming out here?
Speaker:We're like, no, no,
Speaker:because, like, we didn't communicate where
Speaker:our. Where we are on the lake,
Speaker:dude. Not 20 minutes later,
Speaker:this, what kind of boat was it, bash? Like
Speaker:a dinghy.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: It's like, it's like a dinghy, like one of those, like, rafts with a
Speaker:little.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, you got, like, a five foot four Asian driving a boat,
Speaker:and you got six foot four James Neal sitting next to
Speaker:him, and on the back of this dinghy
Speaker:says, tuna Tom.
Speaker:And he gave tuna Tom. I
Speaker:think it was, like, $200 to, like, come find us.
Speaker:None of us know to this day how he found us in the middle of this
Speaker:lake.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: And I also don't recall how he got off of that
Speaker:boat and jumped on our boat. I can't remember
Speaker:how that worked out.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, he jumped from the boat, from the dinghy,
Speaker:but the dinghy gave out from underneath of him. and so he,
Speaker:like, caught the bars, but,
Speaker:like, slammed into the boat with his legs in the water. It was
Speaker:hilarious.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: That's a kneeler fashion. Just searching Lake Ontario
Speaker:for the boys.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, tuna Tom. I'll never forget that as long as I live.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: That's why I said that was a great story. I mean,
Speaker:you did paint a good picture. yeah, it
Speaker:wasn't that bad of a. I give you an eight and a half describing
Speaker:it, but it was fucking twelve out of
Speaker:ten. If you were there tan of m funny shit.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I go with my buddies every summer. We go, we go salmon fishing,
Speaker:too, on Lake Ontario. And like, when you're out there, you got no
Speaker:idea where you are. And the fact that mealer's on this
Speaker:little dinghy buzzing around, and then all of a sudden he pulls off.
Speaker:Guys, I can only picture it. It's unbelievable.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Tuna Tom found us. I don't
Speaker:understand how, but he did, and it was
Speaker:hysterical.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: So, though, that, that lake is just
Speaker:massive.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, it's big. Yeah. It's like, I think if you rip it, you can
Speaker:rip it right across. Right? Like right to buffalo. It's not that bad.
Speaker:Like, it's, you get over there, and I can get an hour, a little
Speaker:less than an hour.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: What's the, what's the five lakes? Let's see if
Speaker:anybody knows.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, boy. Lake Ontario.
Speaker:superior, Huron.
Speaker:Oh, boy.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: isn't it, Holmes?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Erie.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, homes. Erie.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Oh, that's easy.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Milwaukee.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Mississippi.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: We did it. Shit.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Three of us. That's,
Speaker:yeah, that's it.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, dude, I'm traveling this weekend, coming up here,
Speaker:and, this hurricane Debbie's rolling through.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I mean, but don't get me started on this.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: No, but you know what I'm talking about. Do you know about this hurricane?
Speaker:Anyways, coming up Florida, it's going to disrupt air travel this
Speaker:coming weekend, and I'm headed down to the Caribbean.
Speaker:So I'm like, well, shit, we might get pep. Told me today. He's like,
Speaker:you're probably going to get delayed. And I don't know,
Speaker:but that's why.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I flew out of providence. Great airport. Give them a
Speaker:nine out of a ten on, the airport.
Speaker:Small, easy to get through. Badass
Speaker:airport, dude. Car rental place. Easy to return the
Speaker:car. I was supposed to fly out, fly to Boston,
Speaker:and I woke up after a little long night
Speaker:in, in Providence, and, flight
Speaker:canceled. So I scrambled. So I took breezy airways
Speaker:home and I sat on the wing. That's where they
Speaker:had my seat. And, not bad, though. I
Speaker:mean, got delayed 4 hours on that one.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I had some friends flying from Florida. They
Speaker:were gonna go to Europe, and they were a couple, recently, they were
Speaker:like within the last couple days, and they were like, like a couple
Speaker:days delayed. But I feel like now,
Speaker:like every time I'm flying somewhere, I'm
Speaker:getting delayed too, or something's going on. Like, right. If
Speaker:I'm talking to friends or.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I family, if they're trying to go somewhere, like it's always a
Speaker:ah, like a short delay or even, you know, like.
Speaker:Like one of those ones that could be ours.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It's always something. And that's back to the beauty
Speaker:of being a professional athletes, because
Speaker:you, after the game, boys, you throw the suit on
Speaker:and you walk to the bus. I miss those days. You walk
Speaker:to the bus, and then you get on the plane that's waiting for you. You
Speaker:got meals, m. You got. You don't have to go through
Speaker:security, do you go through security only?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: So, like, if we're coming back from, like, if we were
Speaker:playing in Vancouver and flying back into Seattle, then we got
Speaker:to go through us customs at the airport, but we're
Speaker:flying into the private space. So then you. They
Speaker:have, the border assistance waiting for us. I
Speaker:mean, all the canadian guys have our visas. It's a lot easier
Speaker:for the us guys because the us passport.
Speaker:Right. But, like you mentioned, like, the
Speaker:luxury and how nice that is for
Speaker:us, traveling, it's probably one of the
Speaker:best things about being a pro athlete
Speaker:is parking the car, grabbing your luggage,
Speaker:walking on the plane. And the
Speaker:stewardesses that we have all year are usually
Speaker:unbelievable. They're so good at what they do.
Speaker:You got us sitting on a plane for 7 hours,
Speaker:yelling at each other, playing cards.
Speaker:I'm sure it can get annoying sometimes. And you're doing
Speaker:that for months of.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The year, 41 games of the year. The road. Yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: you got idiots like me yelling at another guy when we're
Speaker:playing poker. 13 up, 13
Speaker:down. When. When you get punted or something like that. So, you
Speaker:know, they. They get a. Ah, do us a lot
Speaker:of solids.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: So you have the same, stewardess.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: So the stewardesses will change, like, every season,
Speaker:but, once the season. Once the season starts, we have
Speaker:the same three stewardesses for the full. For the full
Speaker:year.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Are they generally male or female?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Usually, it's usually two females and one
Speaker:male, for at least for the
Speaker:amount of time I've been playing. That's how it is. and, you
Speaker:know, they're good. They get to know your names. They get to know what you
Speaker:like to have to have after a game, whether it's like a
Speaker:beer or certain things, like some guys, like a candy
Speaker:bar or stuff like that. So, like, they're unbelievable. They
Speaker:do so much for us.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It's like southwest boys.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I love that. Cause I feel like
Speaker:you being the type of person you are,
Speaker:like you could become buddies with someone like that.
Speaker:You know what I mean? Like Sally. You met Sally on a tarmac
Speaker:over in you know, coming back from the coyotes
Speaker:game, and then by the end of the year, Sally knows everything about
Speaker:you. You know, she kind of wants to.
Speaker:Hey, can I get you a beer? And you're like, that's
Speaker:true.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I ran into, one of our old stewardesses. I had, like, three
Speaker:years ago at the airport. I was flying somewhere, and she happened to be
Speaker:walking through the airport, too. And then we ended up stopping and saying hi to
Speaker:each other and caught up for like ten minutes. It was, like,
Speaker:awesome. And it was like, yeah, it's like one of those things where
Speaker:it's such a small world, and then you run into each other and then, you know, you say hi,
Speaker:give each other a hug and chat, see how
Speaker:life's going and things like that. So it's like one of those things
Speaker:where you. Unexpected friendships. And then, like when you see
Speaker:each other again, it's like you kind of never left off. Right.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: It's like running into your third grade teacher.
Speaker:I love it.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I'm waving. I should say hi, but I don't know if I
Speaker:want it.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:so for, travel, like, you just
Speaker:mentioned Edmonton, and, man, you talk
Speaker:about a pain in the ass series because every,
Speaker:generally, there's one travel day and then
Speaker:you play in the Stanley cup finals. There
Speaker:might be a today and somewhere in the seven
Speaker:game series, but not the whole way
Speaker:through. And that travel that they had to go
Speaker:from Edmonton to Fort Lauderdale. Edmonton to Fort
Speaker:Lauderdale, how much does that wear on a player?
Speaker:like, you know yourself
Speaker:in a Stanley cup final?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I think, like, I mean, it's, it's, our
Speaker:travel, too, is, is extremely tough being on the west coast, like when
Speaker:we're flying out eastward six, six and a half hour
Speaker:flight sometimes. And, I mean, but, you know, as the
Speaker:season goes on, I mean, in the more years you play,
Speaker:you, you definitely get used to it. But, I mean, Stanley cup
Speaker:finals, like, you're, you're playing into June
Speaker:and you're in a seven game series, and, you know, not
Speaker:everybody is, is healthy at that time. So guys are pretty
Speaker:banged up and worn down, and you're flying back
Speaker:across the country, you know, five, 6 hours, and
Speaker:you're just trying to get as much rest and recovery as you can.
Speaker:But, I mean, it's, it's definitely aware for
Speaker:sure. I mean, the good thing about it is both teams are doing
Speaker:it right. So, yeah, it's not, like, you know, one team's
Speaker:flying x amount of hours and, and the other's not.
Speaker:So you've got both teams doing the travel. It's Stanley cup
Speaker:finals, I'm sure I've never been to it, but I think in those
Speaker:moments, you've, you've got heightened sense of
Speaker:adrenaline and a rush of, of things, especially
Speaker:in those moments. So maybe that helps
Speaker:overcome the, the fatigue from travel and
Speaker:the wear and tear from the season and the playoffs, for
Speaker:sure.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: It's like a. It's a lot like a golf trip for us, right? Bash.
Speaker:Like, we're so amped up to go to the golf trip, and then,
Speaker:like, I feel like I'm injured flying home,
Speaker:after a two day, three day golf trip. And
Speaker:I don't want to say it's a lot the same, but it's pretty
Speaker:close.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, we don't, you know, it's not like we're going
Speaker:out hitting bars and getting turned up till 02:00
Speaker:a.m. and, you know, we're playing like, maybe
Speaker:around and a half of golf, maybe 36. And then
Speaker:we sit around having a.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Couple by 09:00 p.m. yeah, then we.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Hit the hay by nine and do it again the next day. But
Speaker:you're kind of gassed, you know? I mean, I've been on
Speaker:trips, especially overseas, where we played 36 a
Speaker:day walking. It wears you out. But, but
Speaker:I'm sure it's not like that's where those normatec
Speaker:compression pants come into play. Dude, are those things on
Speaker:a game changer?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, guys are. Guys are laying in the aisle
Speaker:or, like, horizontally in their seats with
Speaker:those two. Like, anything you get right? Like,
Speaker:there's so many things nowadays that can help
Speaker:you push past and recover.
Speaker:and then there's some guys that don't do anything. They'll literally just.
Speaker:They'll fall asleep on the plane or, like, some of us
Speaker:play. Play cards the whole plane ride home.
Speaker:And it's just like, everyone's got their yemenite,
Speaker:their little routines, and they do whatever makes
Speaker:it, whatever makes them at their best. It's like, some
Speaker:guys do it, some guys don't. Some guys like to
Speaker:shut eyes. Some guys like to read a books. The guy, we have like ten
Speaker:or eight guys that play Mario kart on those,
Speaker:Nintendo DS's. They all link up on,
Speaker:on Bluetooth. And they got like a. They got a little game and you
Speaker:got the guys that play cards and there's another table that
Speaker:plays super, tuck. It's like a.
Speaker:I never played the game, but it's like a board with marbles and
Speaker:stuff, too. And so you got like your
Speaker:sections of the plane where everyone's doing something. You know what I mean?
Speaker:There's the younger guys who are kind of watching movies at the front.
Speaker:Then you got the guys playing cards or super talk
Speaker:and you got the Nintendo DS guys, and you got the guys who just
Speaker:throw on the eye mask and fall asleep for the 6 hours.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah. I love it. That's awesome. That's
Speaker:be cats. He'd be watching a movie with a little pillow puffin.
Speaker:So what's up with the golf game, man?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: The golf game's been pretty good this summer.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Tell, us about it.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: So we, at the end of the year, a bunch of us went down
Speaker:to Scottsdale national. That was fun. That was a hell of a
Speaker:trip we did. Twelve, of us flew down
Speaker:there. We had a. We rented plane, flew down there, played
Speaker:36 each day like you said. And I mean,
Speaker:that kicked our ass like it was 90
Speaker:degrees.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: And we flew in. We left Seattle seven in the morning,
Speaker:got there at nine, played 18,
Speaker:had lunch, played 18. We had
Speaker:the cabins on the course. We had the putting green at night with the golf
Speaker:carts with the lights. All the boys were hanging out, you
Speaker:know, just doing our thing. And then next morning we woke up.
Speaker:It was like a, 08:00 a.m. wake up 18,
Speaker:lunch 18 again, then
Speaker:break. The plane flew back to Seattle. It was like one of those things where
Speaker:you're in and out, but it was like, that place is
Speaker:something special. That was such a good time.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I never played it, but that's the PXG cat, right?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Isn't that is the guy the PSG guy owned.
Speaker:Owns that. And so we. One of the guys ended up,
Speaker:becoming friends with a couple guys from Seattle who are members there.
Speaker:And then they were. They hosted us and
Speaker:we had a blast out there. Like, it was like you really.
Speaker:You don't see anybody else. You can kind of play
Speaker:as you want. Barefoot. You can play in casual
Speaker:clothes. You can play as a nine some, a ten some. You
Speaker:do whatever you want, right? It's kind of similar to the grove
Speaker:in that sense. When you go out there and you just. You just play golf and you're
Speaker:with boys and you do whatever you want. And it was
Speaker:hell of a time.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I I never, I've never been
Speaker:to that, that course. But. But
Speaker:I definitely like that whole vibe of just kind of
Speaker:casual lax, you know, just to hang with the
Speaker:boys, playing some golf, looking all right,
Speaker:not having to wear, like, all your buttons buttoned up to your
Speaker:neck. You know what I'm saying?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah. You want to throw, you want to put your hat on backwards. You
Speaker:know, you want to maybe play the whole barefoot,
Speaker:like, whatever. I mean, like, I mean, it's. Everyone's got a
Speaker:different, different fix when they play golf. And those
Speaker:spots too. Like, it's. It's awesome.
Speaker:It's so easy going. There's
Speaker:no, like, you know, I mean, it's. Golf's
Speaker:a traditional sport and every place is different and
Speaker:everyone sees it differently. But it's one of those
Speaker:things where it's like you just feel so relaxed. You're just hanging
Speaker:out with the boys. Things are good. You hit a bad
Speaker:shot. It is what it is. You know, you got other guys laughing
Speaker:too.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: You're serious about everything. For six straight
Speaker:months, seven straight months, all you want
Speaker:to do is let go right with the boys. And golf for you
Speaker:is that. And that's, that's golf for me
Speaker:too. I've gotten to a point where it's like, I think
Speaker:bash too, you can kind of agree with me, is that I was
Speaker:that person wherever I went. I had the shirt tucked in
Speaker:and the hat forward and things like that. And I feel like over the last couple
Speaker:years, probably because of COVID because people were just happy that
Speaker:people were showing up to play. I've gotten way more lacks
Speaker:on the golf side. Like when we go to troubadour, I'm wearing gym
Speaker:shorts and a t shirt things, like that. And I'm a guest
Speaker:there. So it's like you feel kind of uneasy doing it, but at
Speaker:the same time you're like, you know what? Fuck it, I'm gonna do it.
Speaker:And it is so much more fun, I think. Cause you're just
Speaker:like, chill.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, it's like. And I was down in cobble for our.
Speaker:By week during the season, I got to play Chileano Bay
Speaker:and, El Dorado.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Dude, how is that?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I mean, those, those are all. El Dorado was like next
Speaker:level unbelievable. I mean, the guys we played with, they had
Speaker:like the biggest JBL speaker I ever seen in my
Speaker:life. It had to have been like 3ft by
Speaker:5ft. And they had it strapped to the top of their cart. And it was
Speaker:like you were at like a concert. That's how loud the music was.
Speaker:And we were playing barefoot. We were in bathing suits, like basketball
Speaker:jerseys. Like everyone was, you know, good
Speaker:golfers and we were having a good time, you know, a couple beers, cigars.
Speaker:The music was blaring. We were shooting the shit. Like they
Speaker:didn't feel like, we were playing golf, to be quite honest with you. And then you
Speaker:look over the hole, and you're right by the ocean. It was like,
Speaker:fuck. It's like unbelievable.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Discovery properties.
Speaker:And, like, the grove have it
Speaker:nailed. I mean, those
Speaker:discovery properties are out of this world.
Speaker:And, just everything, right? Just the
Speaker:vibe, the music, the range. There's
Speaker:no stone unturned. You turn. You show up to the rangers, all kinds of
Speaker:booze there. There's a bar there. There's the fire pits
Speaker:rolling. It's 100 degrees out. And for some reason, I'm
Speaker:sitting next to a fire pit smoking a cigar. I don't
Speaker:know why, but it feels fricking
Speaker:great.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Those comfort stations are.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: How did you say that? how are they?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: It's the best thing. You go in there and. I mean, the
Speaker:one. The one thing. The guy was making fresh tacos, and they had,
Speaker:like, all these, like, different ice creams, and it's like, the
Speaker:tequila, and it's like, well, you're putting me into this
Speaker:comfort station. I kind of want something, but I don't. But
Speaker:then you're leaving with just, like, an absurd amount of stuff, and you're just
Speaker:putting it in the golf course because you don't ever know if you're gonna take it or not. It
Speaker:was, like. It was, like, crazy good, those
Speaker:places were. And then, like, the grove, too. Like,
Speaker:that was so fun playing there. I remember the caddies were riding around
Speaker:on those, motorcycles or scooters. So I jumped
Speaker:on one of those, like, for one of the holes. And I didn't know you had to shift
Speaker:your weight back or. So I'm like. I almost went right
Speaker:into, like, some stuff, and I'm like. I felt like
Speaker:an absolute idiot.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Well, Kraken probably would have loved that phone call.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: That's what I was in. Pit, actually. Me and. Me and Cap. Me and
Speaker:Kaepernick went down there after.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: After we lost to the islanders, in the first round, cappy
Speaker:just bought a house in West Palm, and he's like, let's go
Speaker:down there. Check out my house. I haven't seen it yet. Me and him
Speaker:spent ten or eleven days down
Speaker:there together. We were just golfing every day, going sit by the beach.
Speaker:It was a hell of a time.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Just living life, boys.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: That sounds shit,
Speaker:man. What a life, dude. But
Speaker:those. I know someone that got on that scooter and
Speaker:absolutely jack. Broke his shoulder, broke his
Speaker:collarbone, fell off right in the bunker.
Speaker:Children.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, I was close to doing that,
Speaker:too, to be honest. I had no idea.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Oh, childers.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Why? You know, we got pep, and I got two of those
Speaker:scooters, those fat scutes, and
Speaker:I can't even drive mine at any of my courses, but it sits in my
Speaker:garage and collects dust. But I take it to the
Speaker:core. Those things rip, though, dude. That thing gets.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I drive it on the main road.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, I know.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: You just chuck your bag on the back and then take that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: No, we have a, we have a little, like
Speaker:a golf bag holder on the back. Yeah.
Speaker:So it's like a cooler
Speaker:golf bag holder on the back. And then you
Speaker:got a headlight on the front. So if I get really
Speaker:buckled over at the place here. Oh, people,
Speaker:laugh because you'll see a headlight going through dark in the
Speaker:golf course, and it's me.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I mean, if somebody hit me, I'd be dead. But whatever.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: That, the senior PGA they
Speaker:play, I think it's in Seattle.
Speaker:The Boeing lasso. Yeah.
Speaker:Do you know what course they play? It's. It looks
Speaker:awesome.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: They had a sahali, maybe?
Speaker:No, I I
Speaker:know that the woman, the LPGA had a event at
Speaker:Sahali, and that. That course is unbelievable.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Actually, it's this week, dude.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Is it?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, the Boeing classic, August
Speaker:9 to 11th. the club at
Speaker:Snoqualmie Ridge.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, Snoqualmie Ridge. Yeah. Yeah. It's really nice there. There's some good
Speaker:golf out in Seattle. I mean, the first year we all went to
Speaker:Seattle, I think we played around in golf in mid
Speaker:December. They have doors on the carts,
Speaker:and it was like 60 degrees. It was a little rainy.
Speaker:And then they have a heater in the cart. They put the heater in the cart,
Speaker:and you stay warm.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Go.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: And we were out there. We were out there pegging them. it was
Speaker:like, I don't, I don't golf as much, you know,
Speaker:like, the golf time of the season just because it's hockey season.
Speaker:But, I mean, when you have your spots, you have a couple days, and if the
Speaker:weather cooperates, whether you're on the road and stuff like that. but, I mean, we
Speaker:played in, it was 65 degrees, little rain, and
Speaker:they had the doors and the heater on the cart, and it was awesome.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: So our boy Steve peering, you know Steve
Speaker:peering? Remember him?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: About how many times a year does he text you for tickets, would you
Speaker:say?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Honestly, he don't. I'm telling you,
Speaker:he honestly never asked for tickets.
Speaker:Maybe. Maybe once, maybe twice,
Speaker:Max. Like, over, like, the years I'm serious? Like,
Speaker:he's never, never.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: That's impossible. I'm telling you,
Speaker:this guy, dude, you've never
Speaker:seen anybody happen to be in the same city that the penguins
Speaker:are playing in. Like, his whole. He'll be like, oh,
Speaker:man, I'm in Montreal this week. I'm like, what penguins are?
Speaker:He's like, yeah, I think I'm going to grab two. I'm like,
Speaker:bud, that's why you're there. You
Speaker:didn't just like, you're not in Montreal selling scales, bud, nobody in
Speaker:Montreal wants a tuna on a shirt.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Tuna tom.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Tuna tom. But he.
Speaker:Dudes appearing. We give him such a hard time. But he is such a
Speaker:kind soul, dude. He's such a.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: He's the best. I remember the first, like, we first got out to Seattle.
Speaker:He set up a round for us at, at chambers.
Speaker:And then we went to the true factory and the boys were in there and,
Speaker:like, treated us so well. And it was, like, nice to kind
Speaker:of, to meet some other people in Seattle just because we were so
Speaker:fresh there. And, you know, he, he sorted us out and, you
Speaker:know, they took such good care of us, like, especially to go play
Speaker:Chambers Bay and have some good guys to play
Speaker:with. That was awesome, too.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Did you hear the story about flurry with him,
Speaker:when we went to Ireland?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: No.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: So fleur, flew into Pittsburgh, like, two
Speaker:days before we're leaving for Ireland. His bag
Speaker:doesn't get here. His clothes. Like, we're going to Ireland
Speaker:for seven days. He's got nothing. No
Speaker:clothes. So peering's like, what's your size,
Speaker:dude? He's like, large, large top,
Speaker:34 bottom, whatever it is,
Speaker:dude, peering. I think peering even brought him a suitcase.
Speaker:It was to the gills, pack, because I roomed with
Speaker:Fleur in Ireland. Dude, every day was a new outfit
Speaker:with tags he's ripping off and he's
Speaker:matching this shirt with the brand new shirt. It was hilarious. But
Speaker:peering came through because his trip would have been
Speaker:miserable if he did not.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I couldn't imagine that would have been. That's a tough when you're going over there
Speaker:for. For a week and you're playing golf and you got no
Speaker:gear, especially if you, you're getting ready to saddle up for
Speaker:that trip.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, peering came through, though.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: So long story short, we do love the guy, but I just wanted to get that
Speaker:out there. That question.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Chambers Bay looks that. I think spif one
Speaker:there.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I think they got the.
Speaker:Because DJ missed. DJ missed the pot.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: To go into a playoff on the.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Pretty short one wasn't it?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah. And then they got the plaque where Spieth hit
Speaker:that famous, three would.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Like this crazy. Like the view. It's literally
Speaker:nothing there. And it's so you can see the whole course from the top of the
Speaker:hill. Every, every hole, like every waste
Speaker:bunker, every spot. And the train
Speaker:rolls through and then you're kind of right by, right by the
Speaker:ocean. It's like such a picturesque view. Like
Speaker:when, when the weather's nice, it's like one of the
Speaker:craziest views. Like, it's so beautiful
Speaker:for you.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: You've played tons of golf courses, in different
Speaker:countries and all that jazz for you. What's the
Speaker:best just experience in golf
Speaker:course that you've been at?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Oh, that's, I mean, it's tough. Like,
Speaker:there's so many, like, you go play like a
Speaker:course like oldenhouse, the history, like the tradition.
Speaker:And then you do one like Pine Valley.
Speaker:Like, or you go like the sabonic, like the
Speaker:golf on Long island and play friar's head or
Speaker:Shinnecock. Like, I honestly,
Speaker:the discoveries are so great because of,
Speaker:like, what you're able to do or the role. For instance, like, you're
Speaker:able to play in ten guys and twelve guys. And you're not really,
Speaker:like, it doesn't feel like you're playing golf and like, you're so
Speaker:free. But I, swear I always tell
Speaker:everybody in my top five. I
Speaker:always have Pikewood in my top five. I
Speaker:love Pikewood. That day, like, we went down
Speaker:and played it and then hearing the story of the course and
Speaker:then meeting you guys and meeting everyone else, like, still
Speaker:great friends with. And, like, I still remember that day
Speaker:because the weather was so nice and some of the
Speaker:views and some of the holes. It was
Speaker:like, this place is, I.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Probably haven't played there since then. So
Speaker:it's, Dude, it's special place. It's, it's, it's
Speaker:such a cool place. And that's what you try to explain Pikewood
Speaker:to people. And it's hard to explain
Speaker:it. Dude, it's in Morgantown, West Virginia. And, like, it's,
Speaker:it's just so hard to explain. You have to show people photos
Speaker:of the holes because it's just, it is truly
Speaker:incredible.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: The par three, the par three with the, with the
Speaker:drawbridge. And I have that, I have that picture on
Speaker:my phone. I always, I always show, like, my buddies
Speaker:are of 14, like with the kind of got the tiered
Speaker:cliffs and it's like a little bit like, yeah.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: The greens above that cliff face, and you walk down
Speaker:and up.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yeah, I got a picture of that one. Like, it was. The sun was
Speaker:shining. I always show, like, my buddies or people. Like, this
Speaker:place is, like, unbelievable.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: You ever get time to come over here and peg it up with us, man? We'll do
Speaker:a little Pittsburgh Morgantown run.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Next summer, July 27 to 29th. We
Speaker:already got dates for the two man at Nemicolon,
Speaker:so you're in.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: if you guys are happy to have bard, I'll come with
Speaker:Bart.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: We'll present that to the board.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: As long as there's a surplus of.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Beer for Bart, we got that. But,
Speaker:yeah, but, yeah. It's, July
Speaker:2720. It's so much fun, dude.
Speaker:Everybody goes long. It's a blast. It's just. It's
Speaker:awesome.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: So if you guys would have me, I'd love to join you fellas.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, you're in. We will make that call. Now
Speaker:you're in. Junior would love it, too. You're in, junior.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Will the sprinter. Dude, you sure? Just let me get the sprinter
Speaker:go.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Driving to Seattle to pick you up.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Tell Jr. Said tuna Tom is going to drive me to
Speaker:Buffalo Lake, Ontario. And then junior
Speaker:have the sprinter waiting for me. Buffalo. And then we go
Speaker:from Buffalo.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I feel like tuna Tom. Thanks,
Speaker:man.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Ah, well, dude, it was awesome, man, having you
Speaker:on here. I know it's been a long time coming.
Speaker:so we're going to round this out with our standard tap in
Speaker:segment presented by Betnardi Golf. Check them
Speaker:out@betnardi.com. if you need a new putter,
Speaker:pep's going to ask you four questions that demand your quick
Speaker:response.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: All right, would you rather hit the rink at 05:00 a.m.
Speaker:for practice or play a round of golf without your putter?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Play around a golf ball? My putter.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Favorite place to spend in the offseason.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: maybe Muskoka. College country.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Every person has a cottage. Match,
Speaker:player stroke. Play.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Match play.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: I like it. Yeah. And then
Speaker:on course, music of choice.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I'm a seventies guy. Phone, in the back
Speaker:pocket. And, Seventies.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: All right.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Seventies rock.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Seventies rock.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Okay, seventies rock.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Last question. What are you chasing?
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: I'm chasing a good time. I'm just hanging out
Speaker:with the boys. you know, simple times. You
Speaker:know, easy birdies, no double
Speaker:bogeys.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I love it. Wouldn't that make golf
Speaker:easier? No doubles?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, it'd be so much more easier.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Shoot.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: All right. Bye, guys. It was so good to catch
Speaker:up. And, I know you got to
Speaker:fine tune those skills for the Kraken season, it's
Speaker:here upon us in about a month and a
Speaker:half for opening night. So thank
Speaker:you so much, and we will be seeing you at Nemeca next summer for
Speaker:the tube, man. That's for sure.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Definitely.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Yes, sir. Appreciate you guys having me on. Miss you, boys.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah, likewise, BT. And good luck this year, my
Speaker:man.
Speaker:>> Brandon Tanev: Thank you, fellas. Much appreciated.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: All right, that was awesome. Our dude Brennan
Speaker:Tanf chatting about hockey, and I like to know
Speaker:buckets, dude, like I said, dude, that is my. I know I'm
Speaker:38 years old. My life's pretty much.
Speaker:I don't know, it's just beginning, but I want to
Speaker:go take a laugh around the ice bucket with
Speaker:a big, no bucket, big chug
Speaker:gum in there and just spitting around, ducking up, boys. Huh?
Speaker:Huh?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Yeah. And the man's got the flow going, man. We talked about the hair a
Speaker:little bit. It's got the long hair and just flowing it
Speaker:out there. But
Speaker:great interview with Brandon. So we
Speaker:appreciate you coming on here on chasing birdies, bt. And good luck
Speaker:this season over there in
Speaker:Seattle.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: The Seattle cracking. What's cracking, baby?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: I know. How, like, cliche is
Speaker:that right?
Speaker:Now that you do have the dates for the 2025 chasing
Speaker:birdies two man event, it sounds like BT is probably in the.
Speaker:In the mix a little bit, so we look forward to that.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, that's great. He'll get the official
Speaker:invite. I, mean, I'll show him a text with it.
Speaker:>> Speaker B: Well, guys out there listening, listen, we're going to cut this,
Speaker:outro a little bit short. My man pep's got two kids hanging off his feet.
Speaker:He can't even talk right now. And I'm, sitting on
Speaker:my ankles right now, which is typically how I sit
Speaker:anyways. But, I don't know what else you want to talk about, my man. You got
Speaker:anything you want to say to the people out there listening?
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Not much. I. Did anybody notice the,
Speaker:doorbell ringing? What was it? Who was. Yeah, the
Speaker:doorbell. Nonstop ringing here.
Speaker:I'm like, are you kidding me?
Speaker:>> Speaker B: kids, this is birth control,
Speaker:people.
Speaker:>> Speaker C: Yeah, birth control in the background right
Speaker:now. Make sure you go to
Speaker:nemicolon.com. book your fall.
Speaker:Stay there. It's gonna be a blast. Best time
Speaker:there is when the leaves are changing, and that's when I like
Speaker:to play a little fall ball. Shorts, quarter,
Speaker:zip vest, whatever it may be. Check them
Speaker:out@nemicolan.com. other than that,
Speaker:man, go enjoy your vacation. I'm gonna go enjoy my
Speaker:vacation because I gotta kick it back for, I gotta see
Speaker:island Friday, so.

Speaker:kicked up, put it on ice, tell the wife I said hello.
