Still offered sacrifices, but the sense of God's active voice seemed distant.

Into that silence we meet a humble priest named Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth

They were righteous before God and faithful in their walk, yet they carried a sorrow that felt unmovable, the sorrow of long-term barrenness.

For them the hope of children had faded into the background of life.

Zacharias had been chosen by Lot to enter the temple and to burn incense.

A task that was both sacred and rare.

Most priests would never have this opportunity in their lifetime.

As he stepped inside, the holiness of the moment filled the air

But he had no idea that the true encounter awaiting him was unlike anything Israel had witnessed for centuries.

Before we go any further, let's open up in a word of prayer.

Heavenly Father, as we come before you today, we ask for hearts open to your voice and minds ready to receive your truth.

Help us to understand what it means to trust you even when our circumstances seem unchanged and our prayers seem unanswered.

Teach us through Zacharias and Elizabeth's story about how your timing is perfect, how your promises are steadfast, and how your purposes unfold even when we cannot see them

The passage begins by grounding us in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a difficult and politically troubled era for God's people

Luke makes a point to tell us that they were righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances.

Yet despite their devotion, they remained childless, and time had run its course, they were now well advanced in years.

And yet, for all the years of longing, Zacharias and Elizabeth continued serving God faithfully.

Their story reminds us that spiritual obedience is not a guarantee of immediate answer prayers, but it's the soil in which God and his purposes grow

When Zacharias enters the temple to burn incense, he is alone in the holy place while the people pray outside.

The incense rising before the Lord symbolizes the prayers of the nation ascending to heaven
