Speaker 1 00:00:01
There are moments in Scripture where God steps directly into the ordinary routines of life and reveals that nothing has escaped his attention.
Speaker 1 00:00:10
Not the years of waiting, not the quiet prayers, not the deep disappointments we've carried longer than we admit.
Speaker 1 00:00:17
Today.
Speaker 1 00:00:19
We look at one of those moments.
Speaker 1 00:00:21
A moment when an aging priest entered the temple expecting nothing more than the familiar rhythm of worship and walked out forever changed.
Speaker 1 00:00:31
Today on Bible Bites, this is faith in God's promise, the birth of John the Baptist.

Welcome to Bible Bites, the podcast.
Speaker 1 00:01:31
where we work to inspire faith one bite at a time.
Speaker 1 00:01:34
I'm your host, Randy Black.
Speaker 1 00:01:38
As we begin to examine Luke chapter 1, we're brought into a time of spiritual drought in Israel
Speaker 1 00:01:44
Four hundred years had passed since God last spoke through a prophet.
Speaker 1 00:01:48
The people still worshiped, still prayed
Speaker 1 00:01:52
Still offered sacrifices, but the sense of God's active voice seemed distant.
Speaker 1 00:01:59
Into that silence we meet a humble priest named Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth
Speaker 1 00:02:05
They were righteous before God and faithful in their walk, yet they carried a sorrow that felt unmovable, the sorrow of long-term barrenness.
Speaker 1 00:02:16
For them the hope of children had faded into the background of life.
Speaker 1 00:02:22
Zacharias had been chosen by Lot to enter the temple and to burn incense.
Speaker 1 00:02:27
A task that was both sacred and rare.
Speaker 1 00:02:31
Most priests would never have this opportunity in their lifetime.
Speaker 1 00:02:35
As he stepped inside, the holiness of the moment filled the air
Speaker 1 00:02:40
But he had no idea that the true encounter awaiting him was unlike anything Israel had witnessed for centuries.
Speaker 1 00:02:50
Before we go any further, let's open up in a word of prayer.
Speaker 1 00:02:54
Heavenly Father, as we come before you today, we ask for hearts open to your voice and minds ready to receive your truth.
Speaker 1 00:03:02
Help us to understand what it means to trust you even when our circumstances seem unchanged and our prayers seem unanswered.
Speaker 1 00:03:11
Teach us through Zacharias and Elizabeth's story about how your timing is perfect, how your promises are steadfast, and how your purposes unfold even when we cannot see them
Speaker 1 00:03:25
Guide our thoughts now and let your spirit illuminate your word.
Speaker 1 00:03:29
In the name of your son, Jesus, we pray.
Speaker 1 00:03:32
Amen.
Speaker 1 00:03:35
The passage begins by grounding us in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a difficult and politically troubled era for God's people
Speaker 1 00:03:45
Into this backdrop, Luke introduces us to Zacharias and Elizabeth.
Speaker 1 00:03:49
They were not simply good people.
Speaker 1 00:03:51
Luke makes a point to tell us that they were righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances.
Speaker 1 00:03:58
Their faithfulness was steady and genuine, not performative.
Speaker 1 00:04:03
Yet despite their devotion, they remained childless, and time had run its course, they were now well advanced in years.
Speaker 1 00:04:13
In Jewish culture, barrenness carried a stigma.
Speaker 1 00:04:18
It was not seen only as personal disappointment, but also as a sign of divine disfavor.
Speaker 1 00:04:25
though Scripture does not support that conclusion.
Speaker 1 00:04:28
Still it was it was heavy emotional burden to carry.
Speaker 1 00:04:32
And yet, for all the years of longing, Zacharias and Elizabeth continued serving God faithfully.
Speaker 1 00:04:39
Their story reminds us that spiritual obedience is not a guarantee of immediate answer prayers, but it's the soil in which God and his purposes grow
Speaker 1 00:04:52
When Zacharias enters the temple to burn incense, he is alone in the holy place while the people pray outside.
Speaker 1 00:04:59
The incense rising before the Lord symbolizes the prayers of the nation ascending to heaven
Speaker 1 00:05:05
It's in this sacred moment that the angel Gabriel appears.
Speaker 1 00:05:10
For Zacharias, who likely expected a quiet, reverent task, this was an overwhelming interruption
Speaker 1 00:05:17
Scripture tells us that he was troubled and filled with fear, which is a common reaction when humans encounter God's messengers.
Speaker 1 00:05:26
Gabriel's message is astounding.
Speaker 1 00:05:29
It's astonishing.
Speaker 1 00:05:31
Zacharias's prayers have been answered, and Elizabeth will bear a son.
Speaker 1 00:05:37
But this child is not just an answer to personal longing.
Speaker 1 00:05:42
He is part of God's redemptive plan.
Speaker 1 00:05:45
This child to be named John would go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elias, preparing the way for the coming Messiah.
Speaker 1 00:05:55
His birth is connected to prophecy, purpose, and the fulfillment of God's long-awaited promise to Israel.
Speaker 1 00:06:03
Yet, even standing before an angel
Speaker 1 00:06:06
Zacharias struggles to believe.
Speaker 1 00:06:09
He voices the logical concerns of age and of biology.
Speaker 1 00:06:13
How can this be
Speaker 1 00:06:15
Human limitations loom large in his mind, overshadowing the divine authority of the one delivering the message.
Speaker 1 00:06:22
Gabriel's response is firm but purposeful, as a sign
Speaker 1 00:06:28
Zacharias would be unable to speak until the child was born.
Speaker 1 00:06:32
This divine silence was not punishment as much as it was confirmation
Speaker 1 00:06:39
A period of reflection, humility, and preparation for the miracle God was bringing to pass.
Speaker 1 00:06:46
Meanwhile, the people outside wondered why Zacharias delayed in the temple
Speaker 1 00:06:51
When he finally emerged, unable to speak, they realized he had seen a vision.
Speaker 1 00:06:57
In time, Elizabeth conceived.
Speaker 1 00:07:00
and Scripture says she hid herself for five months, acknowledging the Lord's mercy and removing her reproach.
Speaker 1 00:07:07
Her story stands as a quiet but powerful testament to God's attention to those who feel forgotten.
Speaker 1 00:07:16
With this moment in Israel's history before us, we can now look more closely at the truths God reveals through this remarkable encounter.
Speaker 1 00:07:27
One of the clearest takeaways from this passage is the nature of God's timing.
Speaker 1 00:07:32
Zacharias and Elizabeth had prayed for years, but their answer came not in the season they expected, nor in the way they anticipated.
Speaker 1 00:07:42
God was not indifferent to their longing.
Speaker 1 00:07:44
Instead, he had woven their personal story into a much larger divine plan
Speaker 1 00:07:50
What looked like delay was actually preparation.
Speaker 1 00:07:54
Their weight became the ground on which God displayed his faithfulness in a profound and unmistakable way
Speaker 1 00:08:03
Another takeaway here is the relationship between faith and doubt.
Speaker 1 00:08:07
Zacharias was a righteous man, devoted, sincere
Speaker 1 00:08:11
Yet when confronted with a promise that defied natural explanation, he faltered.
Speaker 1 00:08:18
His hesitation reminds us that
Speaker 1 00:08:20
Faith is not the absence of doubt, but the willingness to trust God beyond our understanding
Speaker 1 00:08:27
God did not reject Zacharias for his uncertainty.
Speaker 1 00:08:30
Rather, he guided him through a season that deepened his awareness of God's power and God's purpose
Speaker 1 00:08:38
We also see the importance of spiritual readiness.
Speaker 1 00:08:41
Zacharias was carrying out his priestly duty when the angel appeared.
Speaker 1 00:08:46
He wasn't seeking a miracle at that moment.
Speaker 1 00:08:48
He was simply being faithful.
Speaker 1 00:08:52
It was in the ordinary obedience of his calling that God chose to reveal something extraordinary.
Speaker 1 00:08:58
This teaches us that
Speaker 1 00:09:00
Our daily acts of faith, even when they seem routine or unnoticed, they often position us to encounter God in ways that we never could predict.
Speaker 1 00:09:13
Finally, this passage points us toward hope.
Speaker 1 00:09:17
Israel had endured centuries of silence, and Zacharias and Elizabeth had carried decades of disappointment
Speaker 1 00:09:26
Yet, God broke through both at the perfect time.
Speaker 1 00:09:32
The story of John's promised birth is a declaration that God's promises never expire
Speaker 1 00:09:38
Even when circumstances seem impossible, God is still at work.
Speaker 1 00:09:46
And as we consider these truths, it's important to bring them into the landscape of our own lives and our own faith journeys.
Speaker 1 00:09:55
All of us experience seasons when prayer seems unanswered and time feels like it's slipping past us.
Speaker 1 00:10:04
We may find ourselves wondering whether God has noticed, whether he remembers what we've asked, or whether he still intends to move on our behalf
Speaker 1 00:10:15
Zacharias and Elizabeth's story assures us that God sees every moment of our waiting.
Speaker 1 00:10:20
He's not slow, inattentive, or distant.
Speaker 1 00:10:25
His timing is shaped by wisdom we cannot comprehend, and his plans stretch far beyond the small window of our immediate desires.
Speaker 1 00:10:37
There may also be moments when we respond to God with caution or with doubt, much like Zacharias did.
Speaker 1 00:10:43
Our circumstances
Speaker 1 00:10:45
can seem so fixed, so immovable, that the idea of divine intervention feels unrealistic.
Speaker 1 00:10:54
But doubt, it does not disqualify us from God's work.
Speaker 1 00:10:58
Instead, it invites us into a deeper dependence on Him
Speaker 1 00:11:04
The silence Zacharias experienced became a space for transformation, a quiet season in which God prepared him for the fulfillment of his promise
Speaker 1 00:11:16
As Christians navigating a fast-paced and uncertain world, we can take comfort in knowing that God still interrupts ordinary life with extraordinary purpose
Speaker 1 00:11:26
Our routines, our acts of service, and the quiet faithfulness we practice day after day matter to him.
Speaker 1 00:11:34
They place us in the path of his unfolding work even when we cannot see that it's taking place.
Speaker 1 00:11:41
And just like Elizabeth, who recognized God's mercy in lifting her reproach, we too can trust that God is attentive to our sorrows
Speaker 1 00:11:53
He redeems the hidden struggles, the private disappointments, and the longings we carry silently.
Speaker 1 00:12:00
In his hands, nothing is wasted
Speaker 1 00:12:05
Before we preview our next episode, let's close our lesson with a word of prayer.
Speaker 1 00:12:13
Lord, we thank you for the story of Zacharias and Elizabeth, for the reminder that you hear every prayer and that your timing is perfect
Speaker 1 00:12:23
Strengthen our faith when we grow weary and waiting, and teach us to trust you when circumstances seem impossible.
Speaker 1 00:12:31
Help us remain faithful in our daily walk, ready to receive whatever you choose to reveal.
Speaker 1 00:12:37
Shape our hearts to respond with humility, hope, and obedience.
Speaker 1 00:12:43
May your promises anchor us, and may your presence guide us as we follow you.
Speaker 1 00:12:50
In the name of your Son Jesus, we pray.
