Speaker AI'm excited to have with us another awesome athlete of the week, Mr.
Speaker AKane Church.
Speaker AHow are you, sir?
Speaker BI'm doing phenomenal.
Speaker BHow about yourself?
Speaker AWonderful.
Speaker ANow, I don't think many people are going to wonder, uh, but can you tell us where you're from and where you train?
Speaker BI'm from San Diego, California and Las Vegas, Nevada, and I train with my dad, Chief Master Church.
Speaker AThat's, yeah, I, I, I, I assumed people would know, but you know, there might be some people out there that don't know, so.
Speaker AHey, sir, you're one of these athletes of the week.
Speaker AAnd before we get into my regular questions.
Speaker AYou just got back from the athlete development camp again?
Speaker AHow was AD camp this year?
Speaker BIt was a phenomenal experience.
Speaker BI got to fight with a bunch of people and train with a bunch of different athletes, and it was just an overall great experience.
Speaker AEverybody loves running outside in June in Arkansas, right?
Speaker AIt's perfect.
Speaker BOh, it's lovely.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AEverybody loves the heat down there.
Speaker AIt's so much fun.
Speaker AThank you, Senior Master Isaacs, for always making people run outside.
Speaker ASo that was.
Speaker AWe saw some videos online.
Speaker ALooks like an amazing camp, working all about culture.
Speaker AI'm gonna have my regular question, but I'm gonna guess I know the answer.
Speaker AFavorite event to compete with at a.
Speaker BTournament, it has to be sparring.
Speaker BThere's no question.
Speaker AHas it always been sparring for you?
Speaker AHave you always been a sparring guy?
Speaker BYeah, I've always been a sparring guy ever since I started and since I've been a kid.
Speaker AYeah, that's.
Speaker ASo I'm gonna guess then.
Speaker AWell, let's.
Speaker ABefore I go to that.
Speaker ATraditional sparring, your favorite, combat sparring, next to it.
Speaker AIs it close or is it way ahead?
Speaker ATraditional sparring.
Speaker BTraditional sparring is way ahead.
Speaker AWay ahead.
Speaker BIt's like a conversation for me.
Speaker BSparring has always been my favorite sport.
Speaker AWell, I mean, it comes naturally to you.
Speaker AI'm guessing there's.
Speaker AThere's that family dynamic where you're.
Speaker AYou're basically born into it.
Speaker BYes, sir.
Speaker AYour dad is kind of a sparring machine.
Speaker AHe.
Speaker AHe knows what he's doing, so.
Speaker BOh, 100.
Speaker ASo now I'm gonna guess again.
Speaker AI think I know the answer, but if you had to pick an event that you're, like, not my favorite to do at tournaments, what would that be?
Speaker BI would have to say forms.
Speaker AI'm shocked.
Speaker BJust because that one.
Speaker BThat one part of Taekwondo has always been the hardest.
Speaker BWeapons a little bit better.
Speaker BI like weapons.
Speaker BForms has been hard, though.
Speaker BI'll say that.
Speaker AWell, and I love.
Speaker AYou know what?
Speaker AWhen we do these interviews with people, I think it's great to hear people have things that they love and things that they're struggling for them, because that's life, you know, like, not everything is going to be super easy for you.
Speaker AThere's parts that are harder, and that's normal.
Speaker AYou know, I think one of the joys of Taekwondo is the.
Speaker AThe fact that it's not all easy.
Speaker AYou know, some of it's like, hey, I got to work a little harder at this.
Speaker ASo you said weapons is close in there.
Speaker AWhat.
Speaker AWhat's your go to weapon.
Speaker AWhat do you enjoy doing?
Speaker BMy.
Speaker BMy go to weapons.
Speaker BThe sword.
Speaker BI've won two world titles consecutively with it so far, so.
Speaker BOh, I really like it.
Speaker AYeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker ATraditional or one of the extreme creative things?
Speaker BTraditional.
Speaker BTraditional.
Speaker ATraditional.
Speaker AAre you extreme a creative guy at all?
Speaker BNo, I respect those guys.
Speaker BI could never do that stuff.
Speaker AYou're a traditional guy.
Speaker AThat's.
Speaker ASo I'm going to guess you.
Speaker AYou seem like you lean more towards, you know, Chief Master Church's side of sparring and things.
Speaker ASenior Master Church's side.
Speaker AYou're not.
Speaker AShe's.
Speaker AThat forms that kind of thing.
Speaker ANot as.
Speaker ANot as much.
Speaker AYou?
Speaker BNot.
Speaker BNot as much.
Speaker AVery good.
Speaker AHey, you know, there are lots of athletes out there.
Speaker AWe're getting ready to go to world championships.
Speaker AYou know, season has ended.
Speaker AYou guys just went through athlete development camp.
Speaker AWhat kind of goals do you have that might be for this season or even just, like, looking forward to the future as an athlete?
Speaker AWhat are you looking for as you set those goals?
Speaker BI have a couple goals, especially this season.
Speaker BOne is to win the world title for sparring again, as well as win the world title for weapons.
Speaker BAnd then another goal is to make sure Team USA wins the world title again.
Speaker AExcellent goals.
Speaker AThose are fantastic.
Speaker AI'm really excited to be watching the team sparring again.
Speaker AThe International Song Cup.
Speaker ASo much fun to watch the different competitions, different countries come together.
Speaker AI think Team USA won, like, all but one last year.
Speaker AWas that correct, I think.
Speaker AOr did they get all of them last year?
Speaker BNo, I think we got all of them.
Speaker AI think there was one year recently that I think they got.
Speaker AThey.
Speaker AThere was one that another country got, but I'm trying to stoke this rivalry.
Speaker AThere's not an actual rivalry, but I'm trying to stoke one between Team USA and Team Mexico and the Team Philippines.
Speaker AJust.
Speaker AJust because I think it's fun, though.
Speaker BOh, yeah, it'll definitely be fun with the.
Speaker BThis year with their addition.
Speaker BThey have phenomenal fighters on their team.
Speaker ADo you guys have any?
Speaker AI was thinking I saw that there might be a fighter or two from your guys's school on one of those teams.
Speaker AIs that right?
Speaker BYes, sir.
Speaker BNoah Mercado.
Speaker BHe's going to be on their team.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker AVery cool.
Speaker AWell, I love that.
Speaker ASo let's look at you are.
Speaker AYou've been a lifelong martial artist.
Speaker AYou've been doing this long time, if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker AYou've got some educational things, some things outside of Taekwondo that you're doing that you're.
Speaker AYou're part of what kind of goals if you're looking outside of Taekwondo.
Speaker AAre you.
Speaker AYou're setting, are you.
Speaker AWhat, what are you in school, out of school?
Speaker AWhat?
Speaker AWhere are you school wise?
Speaker BI'm currently in school.
Speaker BI'm.
Speaker BI attend the University of San Diego.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BReally?
Speaker BIt's actually a beautiful.
Speaker BIt's a beautiful school.
Speaker BOne of my current goals is to actually graduate.
Speaker BI'm going to be a senior this year, so last year.
Speaker BAnd then after that, I'm going to apply what I've learned into the Taekwondo schools.
Speaker ANice.
Speaker AExcellent.
Speaker ASo, Mr.
Speaker AChurch, can you tell me what's it mean to you to be an athlete that goes beyond the belt?
Speaker BFor me, it just means living as I do, leading when I can, being a great example to everyone around me and just actually just being who I am, someone who is honest.
Speaker AOh, I love that.
Speaker AYes, I like that.
Speaker ALike being true to yourself, being authentic.
Speaker AThat is a great way to be a champion.
Speaker ABeyond the belt.
Speaker AI love it.
Speaker AWell, sir, I really appreciate your time today.
Speaker AThank you.
Speaker AEspecially for making time after getting back from athlete development camp.
Speaker AI know you got to be exhausted and I'm sure you're right on to training and getting ready for Worlds in just a couple weeks.
