Speaker:

Hey, it's getting close to that time of day when panic starts to set in,

Speaker:

what on earth are we gonna have for dinner if that daily scramble leads

Speaker:

to stress and expensive takeout.

Speaker:

Let's talk about a simple planning habit that brings peace and can save you money.

Speaker:

Hey there, and welcome back to Your Daily Ask Ralph.

Speaker:

I'm Ralph, so glad you're joining me.

Speaker:

We're making real progress in our series.

Speaker:

The Joy of Living Below Your Means, all designed to help you break the cycle

Speaker:

of financial shame with confidence.

Speaker:

Yesterday we talked about the cash envelope trick for

Speaker:

those tricky spending areas.

Speaker:

Today we tackle another big one.

Speaker:

Food.

Speaker:

Let's talk about the late afternoon feeling, the workday's ending.

Speaker:

Maybe you're tired, the kids are hungry, and that question looms large.

Speaker:

What's for dinner?

Speaker:

Does this often lead to frantically searching through the fridge, realizing

Speaker:

you don't have what you need and any either making another trip to the

Speaker:

store for just a few things where if you're like me, you always buy

Speaker:

more, or just giving up and ordering expensive pizza or takeout again.

Speaker:

It's stressful.

Speaker:

Plus, maybe you find yourself throwing out that food that went bad

Speaker:

because you bought it without a plan.

Speaker:

That cycle of daily dinner, stress, those last minute expensive

Speaker:

decisions and wasted food and money.

Speaker:

That's the single pain point we're zeroing in on today.

Speaker:

Here's the thing, food is often one of the biggest variable expenses in our budgets.

Speaker:

The lack of planning is usually the culprit.

Speaker:

When costs get outta control beyond the money.

Speaker:

Think about the stress it adds to your day.

Speaker:

God calls us to be good stewards and that includes stewarding our time, our

Speaker:

stress levels, and the food he provides.

Speaker:

Just remember how Jesus had his disciples gather the leftovers after feeding

Speaker:

the 5,000 so nothing would be wasted.

Speaker:

That's in John chapter six, verse 12.

Speaker:

Planning helps us avoid waste and be more intentional with these resources.

Speaker:

So you might be asking, how do we break this cycle of dinner,

Speaker:

panic and those wasted resources?

Speaker:

How do we gain control over this major budget category?

Speaker:

The single most effective solution is to plan your meals, especially

Speaker:

dinners for the upcoming week.

Speaker:

See, taking just a little time once a week to decide what you'll

Speaker:

eat accomplishes so many things.

Speaker:

First thing it does is it eliminates that daily stress.

Speaker:

No more 5:00 PM panic.

Speaker:

You know what's for dinner.

Speaker:

Second thing it does is it saves money plan meals around sales or what you have,

Speaker:

and cut down on that impulse takeout.

Speaker:

It also reduces food waste.

Speaker:

You buy only what you need for the meals you've planned.

Speaker:

It certainly makes grocery shopping more efficient.

Speaker:

You know exactly what to buy, which sets us up for tomorrow, and it can

Speaker:

lead to healthier eating because truth is plan meals are often more balanced.

Speaker:

The solution is proactive planning.

Speaker:

Plan your meals.

Speaker:

So here's your one action step for today, maybe set time aside this weekend before

Speaker:

your next grocery trip, I want you to grab a piece of paper or maybe your phone, and

Speaker:

I'm gonna give you the steps right now.

Speaker:

Step number one, look at your calendar.

Speaker:

Check your schedule for the next seven days.

Speaker:

Are there any nights you'll be out or have less cooking time?

Speaker:

Step two, choose your dinners.

Speaker:

Decide on the main dish for each dinner, and you can keep it simple.

Speaker:

Tacos, spaghetti baked chicken, soup, and sandwiches.

Speaker:

Boy, this is making me hungry.

Speaker:

Just thinking about it.

Speaker:

We'll start with just five meals and, and if, if seven feels like too much

Speaker:

and write them down for specific days.

Speaker:

Monday we're gonna have this.

Speaker:

Tuesday we're gonna have this.

Speaker:

Step number three, check your stock quickly.

Speaker:

Look in your pantry, your fridge, and your freezer.

Speaker:

What ingredients do you already have for those meals?

Speaker:

And jot that down.

Speaker:

And here's a bonus if you wanna do it.

Speaker:

Think about lunches or breakfast if you want.

Speaker:

But start just with the dinners, if that's easier.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

Just a simple meal plan down on paper for the week ahead.

Speaker:

So maybe now you're asking Ralph, why does this even help?

Speaker:

Well, because it directly tackles that pain of that daily dinner stress and

Speaker:

that reactive, expensive food choices.

Speaker:

It truly replaces chaos with order, and it empowers you to be intentional, to

Speaker:

save money, to reduce waste, and bring a sense of calm back to your evenings.

Speaker:

And I don't know about you, but everybody can use a little calm.

Speaker:

Well, let's pray together.

Speaker:

Father God, thank you for the blessing of food and the

Speaker:

resources that you provide to us.

Speaker:

Lord, forgive us for the times we've been stressed, when we've been wasteful, or

Speaker:

we've been poor planners with our meals.

Speaker:

I pray for my friend, listen in now.

Speaker:

Give them the motivation and the discipline to sit down and plan

Speaker:

their meals for this coming week.

Speaker:

Lord, grant them creativity.

Speaker:

Help them keep it simple and and show them how this act of planning

Speaker:

can truly be good stewardship.

Speaker:

Lord, we asked that it would reduce their stress and free up resources

Speaker:

and that mental energy for the other things you call them to do.

Speaker:

Lord, thank you so much for our daily bread, and we ask this in Jesus' name.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Alright, well take that planning step.

Speaker:

Even planning just a few meals will make a huge difference in your week.

Speaker:

And just remember you've got this, so you've planned a meals.

Speaker:

What's next?

Speaker:

Hitting the grocery store.

Speaker:

tomorrow on the as route.

Speaker:

We're gonna cover the crucial follow up step.

Speaker:

You gotta wait and hear it.

Speaker:

That's on tomorrow's show.
