Marvin: Hey folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the Articulate Fly,
Speaker:Marvin: and we're back with another On the Water with Dustin White. How are you, Dustin?
Speaker:Dustin: Marvin, I'm doing well. Here enjoying our summer weather in Wyoming and the
Speaker:Dustin: fishing opportunities that are there. And so, yeah, I can't complain.
Speaker:Marvin: Yeah, you're getting ready to kind of settle into the long groove to Labor Day, right?
Speaker:Dustin: A little bit. A little bit. Yep. Yep.
Speaker:Marvin: Yeah. And so it's funny, you know, we were talking, you know,
Speaker:Marvin: we've got this heat wave kind of on the East Coast and I, you know,
Speaker:Marvin: I batch record a lot of these fishing reports on Monday nights and you have
Speaker:Marvin: the best weather of anybody.
Speaker:Dustin: Anybody i i'll take it
Speaker:Dustin: given the spring we had
Speaker:Dustin: i'll take some good weather uh yeah it's
Speaker:Dustin: been uh it's been pretty really really pleasant you know we're a little
Speaker:Dustin: as you and i were talking earlier we're a
Speaker:Dustin: little breezier than we are typically at
Speaker:Dustin: this point in the year usually by mid-june that wind
Speaker:Dustin: is laying down i mean we'll still get some breezy days but you
Speaker:Dustin: know the extreme wind kind of goes away so we've still had some you
Speaker:Dustin: know real gusty afternoons like we had
Speaker:Dustin: today but other than that it's been really
Speaker:Dustin: really pleasant weather it's been it it just you know pleasant is the only way
Speaker:Dustin: i can say it you know enjoyable uh days out in the water so you know been really
Speaker:Dustin: really great uh fun days to roll uh the boat around and pull the the drift or
Speaker:Dustin: the flats boat around so can't complain there yeah.
Speaker:Marvin: You were telling me you've really kind of uh bumped up your uh your carp dates right.
Speaker:Dustin: Yeah yeah and um
Speaker:Dustin: and this is the time of the year that it really really does start
Speaker:Dustin: to turn on and pick up but you know more
Speaker:Dustin: and more people are are wanting to pursue carp uh for a myriad of reasons some
Speaker:Dustin: it's the novelty of it some it's hey i'm in town fishing with you for five days
Speaker:Dustin: let's you know what's something goofy we can do one of the days But a lot of folks do end up saying,
Speaker:Dustin: hey, I've got my first saltwater trip or I haven't done a saltwater trip in a few years.
Speaker:Dustin: I want to kind of get the, you know, rust kicked off a little bit before I go,
Speaker:Dustin: you know, and they'll look that way.
Speaker:Dustin: And then there just are a lot of folks who are a goofy carp angler like myself
Speaker:Dustin: that actually want to target and pursue the species.
Speaker:Dustin: And so I can't complain about that. I love pulling a flats boat around, chasing carp.
Speaker:Marvin: Yeah, and so, you know, I think the last time we spoke, you had unusually early
Speaker:Marvin: dry fly activity. What are you seeing, you know, on the horn,
Speaker:Marvin: the reef, and the mile now?
Speaker:Dustin: Yeah, we're starting to see really right now our key bug is PMDs kind of across
Speaker:Dustin: the board with all three fisheries.
Speaker:Dustin: PMDs really are the primary food source these fish are seeing now.
Speaker:Dustin: Caddis, particularly on the reef, have really been taken very well.
Speaker:Dustin: And uh on the horn you know
Speaker:Dustin: also caddis the the seasonal salba
Speaker:Dustin: pmds um they're eating you
Speaker:Dustin: know crayfish imitations uh there as well so so we're really really excited
Speaker:Dustin: about that but we're starting what's got you know got a lot of us really really
Speaker:Dustin: excited is on the mile we're starting to see actually uh the golden stoneflies
Speaker:Dustin: uh actually in flight so it's uh any day now any Any day now,
Speaker:Dustin: we should start seeing some heads really starting to key in on looking at those
Speaker:Dustin: stones because that's really when that piece of water becomes magical.
Speaker:Dustin: Those big bruiser rainbows that push up out of the reservoir to take a giant
Speaker:Dustin: stonefly on the surface is pretty exciting.
Speaker:Dustin: And so it's a small window that happens every year, but usually once that starts,
Speaker:Dustin: those fish are pretty well keyed into looking up for the remainder of the season.
Speaker:Dustin: On the reef, we are seeing a lot of hoppers that are making their way closer to the banks.
Speaker:Dustin: Haven't quite started falling in the water yet, but again, that's where this
Speaker:Dustin: breezy summer is going to help us out.
Speaker:Dustin: So as we see a little bit more dry weather that drives those hoppers to the
Speaker:Dustin: bank in search of that greener grass and having some breezy days,
Speaker:Dustin: those are going to start falling in the water.
Speaker:Dustin: And so, like I said, it's just around the corner, both with hoppers and with
Speaker:Dustin: the golden stones, but some really, really fun surface action that we should start seeing.
Speaker:Marvin: Very, very neat. And you know, what restaurant slash bar establishment in Casper
Speaker:Marvin: are we going to give a shout out to this episode?
Speaker:Dustin: I got to give the shout out this week to Jay's Pub. Jay's Pub is a tried and true classic.
Speaker:Dustin: It does not hurt, Marvin, that it's about 90 seconds from my wife and I's place.
Speaker:Dustin: So the short commute there is great, but it's got a really wide sort of dish
Speaker:Dustin: for folks. Great staff there.
Speaker:Dustin: Killer bartenders. Shout out to our boy, Andrew, who always takes really good
Speaker:Dustin: care of us. And it's just kind of the cool local haunt.
Speaker:Dustin: You'll walk in and you'll see your buds that you guide with.
Speaker:Dustin: You'll see, uh, your regular clients and friends. It's kind of,
Speaker:Dustin: kind of that cheer sort of vibe.
Speaker:Dustin: And so it's, uh, it's, it's just a great, great spot to go.
Speaker:Dustin: So Jay's pub, um, right on Wyoming Boulevard, uh, on the West side of town is,
Speaker:Dustin: is, is, yeah, just trying to true favorite.
Speaker:Marvin: Yeah. Well, there you go. And, you know, folks, we love questions on the articulate
Speaker:Marvin: fly. You can email them to us or DM us on social media.
Speaker:Marvin: And a relatively new thing we've got, if you'd like to hear your question on
Speaker:Marvin: the episode, if you go to the podcast link, there's a little microphone box
Speaker:Marvin: down at the bottom. You can record your question.
Speaker:Marvin: And if we select it, we may actually work your audio into the show.
Speaker:Marvin: So something kind of cool.
Speaker:Marvin: And, you know, if we use your question, I will send you some articulate fly swag.
Speaker:Marvin: We are drawing for a half day of fishing with Dustin.
Speaker:Marvin: Yeah. Yeah, dude, it's super cool. And, you know, Dustin, before I let you go,
Speaker:Marvin: you want to let folks know, you know, where they can find you so they can fish
Speaker:Marvin: with you this summer before you head back east for a little steelhead action?
Speaker:Dustin: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, probably guide for the Ugly Bug Fly Shop,
Speaker:Dustin: which is downtown Casper on Center Street.
Speaker:Dustin: Our number there is 307-234-6905.
Speaker:Dustin: Otherwise, you can find me on Instagram at Dustin James White.
Speaker:Marvin: Well, there you go. And, folks, as I always say, you owe it to yourself to get
Speaker:Marvin: out there and catch a few. you. Tight lines, everybody. Tight lines, Dustin.
Speaker:Dustin: Tight lines, Marvin. Thanks so much.
