Welcome to The Holistic Skin Guru, where what's on the surface is
Speaker:just as important as what's underneath. I'm your host, Amina.
Speaker:Let's dive deep into the world of holistic skincare. Hi
Speaker:guys and welcome back to another episode of
Speaker:the podcast. Today we're going to be talking about myths around
Speaker:skincare and there are so many myths I'll probably won't get through all
Speaker:of them but I will definitely try. So one
Speaker:of the myths that we came across was more
Speaker:products equal better results. I'm
Speaker:going to say that Instagrammers are the ones that have perpetrated
Speaker:this particular myth because you see so
Speaker:many people, you know, dripping this and dripping that
Speaker:onto their skin. And first of all, they're wasting product because they're using
Speaker:so much of it. You only really need like, you know, one
Speaker:little drop. You don't need that much for your face. More
Speaker:products equals better results? Not necessarily. we
Speaker:like to keep it simple and you need to get a
Speaker:professional skin diagnosis or professional
Speaker:skin consultation so you know what's going on in your skin
Speaker:so that we can tailor the products that you use
Speaker:at home to what's going on in your skin. Now this makes more
Speaker:sense, it makes complete sense to me and I can never understand
Speaker:why people self-prescribe and then go round and round
Speaker:and round in circles trying to fix something that they
Speaker:clearly don't know how to fix and you know someone said
Speaker:the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and
Speaker:expecting different results Ditch everything,
Speaker:come and see a professional and let us guide you. That's
Speaker:what we're here for. Use us, use our knowledge and
Speaker:let us give you the best advice for your skin tailored
Speaker:for you. So more products doesn't equal better results. A
Speaker:lot of people seem to think that expensive products are
Speaker:better. And yes, we've been obviously marketed
Speaker:to believe that. And in some cases, ingredients are
Speaker:more expensive. The better ingredients are more expensive. And so you
Speaker:pay a little bit extra for really good product, but it
Speaker:doesn't have to cost the earth. And I watched something recently,
Speaker:so don't quote me on this, but they went back to a product which
Speaker:is a very high marketing product, a very
Speaker:big brand, global brand. I won't use
Speaker:any names here. But what they did was actually broke down the
Speaker:ingredients of that particular product. And they
Speaker:found that these ingredients are all very cheap
Speaker:ingredients readily available. And it just didn't make
Speaker:sense to the high price tag. I think one bottle was
Speaker:like 200 and something dollars. And it made absolutely no sense. And it
Speaker:was like a 30 mil bottle. So People like us,
Speaker:we understand the ingredients, we understand how
Speaker:it works in the skin. So when you come to us, we're looking
Speaker:at the ingredient technology and how to give you the best results. So,
Speaker:you know, expensive is not always the answer to
Speaker:a better product. Sometimes brands
Speaker:use their elite status to mark up
Speaker:the price and make more profit. So by coming to
Speaker:a skincare clinic with people who have been
Speaker:trained and have the knowledge in the skincare that
Speaker:they are prescribing, you are better off getting sound
Speaker:advice that way. Now, hyaluronic acid, this is one
Speaker:of my favorite ingredients to use, but some people seem to
Speaker:think it's a miracle ingredient that can cure anything, and
Speaker:it isn't. Hyaluronic acid is actually used
Speaker:as a way to hydrate the skin. It naturally forms
Speaker:in our skin anyway. Our extracellular matrix in our skin manufactures
Speaker:hyaluronic acid in the forms that we need it.
Speaker:However, hyaluronic acid, when it's synthetically produced
Speaker:can be made in different weights and strengths. And
Speaker:this is where there's a price disparity. So you
Speaker:can buy an off the chemist shelf product with hyaluronic
Speaker:acid in it and it's quite cheap. And then you can go and buy
Speaker:another product with hyaluronic acid and it's very expensive because that
Speaker:hyaluronic acid is in a different, it's constructed differently, it's
Speaker:in a different weight. And the only way to explain this
Speaker:is like, when you go to buy a set of sheets, you know, if
Speaker:you go to Kmart and you get a 400 thread
Speaker:count set of sheets, cotton sheets, they
Speaker:serve the purpose, they do the job. And then you
Speaker:go to David Jones and you buy a thousand thread count
Speaker:Egyptian cotton sheet set, which is more luxurious. It
Speaker:feels nicer. It probably will last a lot longer, wash
Speaker:better. Still the same thing. They're both sheet sets,
Speaker:they're both cotton, but one's a better quality than the
Speaker:other. And this is the same for hyaluronic acid. It comes
Speaker:in different qualities, different weights, different strengths. And
Speaker:something important for you guys to know is that hyaluronic acid holds a
Speaker:thousand times its weight in water. So when
Speaker:it's used in skincare, it needs to be used
Speaker:correctly. And a lot of people don't understand this and they
Speaker:use their hyaluronic acid serums incorrectly. So
Speaker:what they're doing is they're applying it to a dry skin. And
Speaker:because hyaluronic acid is looking for water, it starts
Speaker:to dry the skin out because it's looking for that water to
Speaker:pull in and it's trying to grab moisture from everywhere and
Speaker:it counteracts and starts drying the skin out.
Speaker:So when you apply hyaluronic acid to your skin, try to
Speaker:apply it with damp hands because what that's going to do is
Speaker:it's going to draw the water lipids into the skin and you're
Speaker:actually going to be using that serum a lot better for you
Speaker:and you're going to find that the hydration levels are a lot higher.
Speaker:So hyaluronic acid is an amazing ingredient that has to
Speaker:be used correctly. It definitely is only for hydration. You're
Speaker:not going to be able to cure pigmentation or acne with
Speaker:hyaluronic acid. So it's not this miracle ingredient for
Speaker:everything. It is a miracle ingredient for hydration though.
Speaker:People seem to be over-exfoliating and
Speaker:over-cleansing their skin, thinking that this is what's gonna give
Speaker:them a glow and make their skin look healthy. All
Speaker:you're doing by over-cleansing and over-exfoliating is
Speaker:aggravating your skin, and you're creating an unhealthy
Speaker:skin, so you're actually stripping the natural oils
Speaker:from the skin and irritating your skin. Our skin is
Speaker:naturally acidic, It has a pH balance that's
Speaker:naturally acidic. It sits at about 7.5. We
Speaker:want to make sure that we keep that barrier function operating
Speaker:the way it was meant to. And by stripping everything
Speaker:off the skin, all we're doing is compromising that barrier and
Speaker:allowing for other things to happen. So, you know, the skin
Speaker:will become inflamed. You'll feel sensitive. It
Speaker:just won't function like it's meant to. If you
Speaker:have an oily complexion, generally people with oilier skins
Speaker:like myself need to exfoliate once one
Speaker:to two times a week and maybe in the summer months three times a
Speaker:week and then cut back in the winter months when you're not producing
Speaker:as much oil. Oil is good. What we
Speaker:want to do when we're cleansing is we want to get rid of all the dirt and
Speaker:the grime and the excess oil that our skin
Speaker:is producing. We don't want to take away all the good oils from
Speaker:our skin, which keeps our skin nice and supple and
Speaker:young and beautiful. When our skin dries out, that's the
Speaker:first stage of aging. So we want to keep away
Speaker:from drying our skin out because a dry skin becomes
Speaker:crepey. A crepey skin becomes fine
Speaker:lines. Fine lines become deeper lines and deep set wrinkles.
Speaker:So that's why we want to make sure that our skin stays
Speaker:nice and hydrated and we don't strip all our natural oils off
Speaker:our skin. So there are no quick fixes, unfortunately. We
Speaker:wanna make sure that we look after the pH balance
Speaker:of our skin and keep everything working the
Speaker:way it should be. One of the things you need
Speaker:to consider is making your skincare regime
Speaker:very simple. You need a cleanser, you need a
Speaker:serum, you need a moisturizer, a good retinol for
Speaker:your evening regimen, and a very
Speaker:good sunscreen to protect your skin from the UV rays.
