Living our best life.
Valerie HatcherIt's good to be alive, but it's best to truly live.
Valerie HatcherLet your spirit pride celebrate the journey every single day.
Valerie HatcherAging with grace and St in our own special way.
Valerie HatcherHave you ever told yourself, I'm too old for that?
Valerie HatcherMaybe it's figuring out social media, learning a new skill, starting a business, or even trying a new workout routine.
Valerie HatcherWe've all been there.
Valerie HatcherThat little voice whispers, you can't do this.
Valerie HatcherAnd suddenly we believe it.
Valerie HatcherToday, we're going to shatter that myth.
Valerie HatcherDig into why age is never the reason you can't learn or grow, and talk about how to start rewriting that inner narrative.
Valerie HatcherHey, friend, who says aging has to mean slowing down?
Valerie HatcherAround here, we're all about embracing this chapter with grace, style, and just the right touch of sass.
Valerie HatcherWelcome to the Aging with Grace and Style podcast.
Valerie HatcherI'm Valerie Hatcher, your guide to empowering tips, inspiring stories, and a whole lot of laughs for women over 50.
Valerie HatcherSo grab your favorite drink, Turmoil, turn up the volume, and let's dive in.
Valerie HatcherToday's topic hits close to home for many of us.
Valerie HatcherThe belief that we're too old for something or that I can't do this because of my age.
Valerie HatcherSpoiler alert.
Valerie HatcherThat belief has got to go.
Valerie HatcherLet's talk about why and how to break free from it.
Valerie HatcherI was talking to a woman recently, she's maybe in her 50s, and she told me that she couldn't get into social media because she was too old for that.
Valerie HatcherI couldn't help but laugh a little, but not at her, but at the idea.
Valerie HatcherI'm 62, running the podcast, creating social media content for me and my church, and learning new things practically every week.
Valerie HatcherAnd trust me, I didn't grow up with Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
Valerie HatcherHer comment stuck with me, though, because it wasn't just about social media.
Valerie HatcherIt was about how quickly we write ourselves off, how easily we let age become a barrier before we even give ourselves a chance to try.
Valerie HatcherShe said, I can't.
Valerie HatcherBefore even attempting to step up to the plate.
Valerie HatcherI'm going to be honest with you, I kind of rubbed me the wrong way.
Valerie HatcherIt was like nails on a chalkboard.
Valerie HatcherOkay, you get the picture, right?
Valerie HatcherYou know, I think that we can do anything regardless of age.
Valerie HatcherWe can't promote ageism against ourselves.
Valerie HatcherBut let me tell you another story.
Valerie HatcherWhen I started this podcast, I didn't know the first thing about audio editing, equipment, recording, or even how to set up a mic.
Valerie HatcherI could have said, I'm too old for this tech stuff and walked away.
Valerie HatcherBut instead, I googled, I youtubed, I asked questions.
Valerie HatcherAnd now here we are, chatting and sharing this moment together.
Valerie HatcherThere's another woman that I know who didn't try a yoga class for months because she thought everyone there would be younger, more flexible, more experienced.
Valerie HatcherAnd when she finally went, guess what?
Valerie HatcherShe loved it and realized there were plenty of people her age in the class.
Valerie HatcherSo why do we get in our own heads?
Valerie HatcherSocial media is just one example of how this mindset shows up.
Valerie HatcherBut it was the social media conversation that I had that prompted this episode.
Valerie HatcherI've heard women say they're too old to start a new career, too old to learn a new skill, too old to travel solo.
Valerie HatcherBut here's the truth.
Valerie HatcherAge isn't the problem.
Valerie HatcherThe real issue is the belief that age defines what we can and can't do.
Valerie HatcherThink about it.
Valerie HatcherWe're bombarded with messages about what aging should look like.
Valerie HatcherSlowing down, stepping aside, letting younger generations take over.
Valerie HatcherBut who decided that?
Valerie HatcherWho wrote that rulebook?
Valerie HatcherAnd why are we following it?
Valerie HatcherHere are just a few stereotypes that we need to shatter.
Valerie HatcherOne, older people can't learn technology.
Valerie HatcherFalse.
Valerie HatcherYou're capable of learning anything if you give yourself the time and the space to try.
Valerie HatcherToday, there aren't many excuses because we have so many resources out there to help us learn.
Valerie HatcherNow.
Valerie HatcherSometimes we can get bombarded with resources, but they're available.
Valerie HatcherNumber two, it's too late to start a new career or a hobby.
Valerie HatcherThat's not true.
Valerie HatcherPeople like Vera Wang and Grandma Moses didn't even start their most iconic careers until their 40s or 50s and beyond.
Valerie HatcherAs a matter of fact, Grandma Moses started painting at 78 after arthritis made embroidery difficult.
Valerie HatcherSo what did she do?
Valerie HatcherShe pivoted.
Valerie HatcherAnd then, number three, you're supposed to slow down after 50.
Valerie HatcherCover your ears.
Valerie HatcherBut I need to say this this way?
Valerie HatcherHell no.
Valerie HatcherWhy?
Valerie HatcherWho says slowing down isn't a requirement, It's a choice.
Valerie HatcherAnd you get to decide.
Valerie HatcherSo why do we fall into this trap?
Valerie HatcherOne reason could be fear of failure.
Valerie HatcherLet's be honest.
Valerie HatcherWe all go through this at times.
Valerie HatcherNo one wants to fail.
Valerie HatcherBut sometimes, in a weird growth kind of way, it could be good.
Valerie HatcherOr comparing ourselves to younger generations.
Valerie HatcherI'll be honest.
Valerie HatcherI'm not perfect and I've done this.
Valerie HatcherI think I've told you this, but recently I was tapped on the shoulder to lead our social media marketing and communications team at my church.
Valerie HatcherI'm lucky because there is a diversity of age on our team.
Valerie HatcherBut for a Few seconds.
Valerie HatcherA few minutes.
Valerie HatcherOkay, a few hours.
Valerie HatcherI was in my feelings thinking, these young people are going to wonder, what on earth does this old lady bring to the table?
Valerie HatcherAnd what does she know about social media?
Valerie HatcherBut, you know, I got over it quickly because what I realized was how awesome it is that we are learning from each other.
Valerie HatcherWe all bring something unique to the table.
Valerie HatcherThe truth is, these stereotypes only hold power if we let them.
Valerie HatcherBut let me remind you, those societal messages don't define us.
Valerie HatcherThey're not the rule book.
Valerie HatcherAnd we get to rewrite it.
Valerie HatcherOne of the most empowering things that we can do at any age is to commit to lifelong learning.
Valerie HatcherThink about it.
Valerie HatcherHow dull would it be if we just stopped trying new things?
Valerie HatcherLearning is part of living.
Valerie HatcherThose of us who still work, we learn new things on our jobs almost daily.
Valerie HatcherWe have to in order to stay relevant as our work environments change.
Valerie HatcherSo why do we stop at work?
Valerie HatcherWe can expand our learning outside of work.
Valerie HatcherAnd here's why this is so important.
Valerie HatcherIt keeps our brain healthy.
Valerie HatcherStudies show that learning new skills keeps your brain sharp and reduces the risk of cognitive decline.
Valerie HatcherYeah, it's like a workout for your mind.
Valerie HatcherIt builds confidence.
Valerie HatcherEvery time you learn something new, you prove to yourself that you're capable.
Valerie HatcherAnd that confidence, it spills over in every area of life and it opens new doors.
Valerie HatcherLearning creates opportunities that you might not have even considered.
Valerie HatcherI can truly attest to that.
Valerie HatcherMaybe that cooking class, decorating skill leads to a new hobby or a new business.
Valerie HatcherThere are some practical resources out there for learning, like YouTube tutorials.
Valerie HatcherThey're out there for just about anything.
Valerie HatcherThere are local community classes, workshops, online courses, conferences.
Valerie HatcherI have learned so much from the online communities that I'm a part of.
Valerie HatcherAnd remember, you don't have to master everything.
Valerie HatcherThe goal is to enjoy the process of learning and not be afraid to learn.
Valerie HatcherAnd most importantly, is to remove the I can't because I'm too old from your vocabulary.
Valerie HatcherSo how do we break free from the I'm too old mindset?
Valerie HatcherHere are a few steps that you can take today.
Valerie HatcherReframe your thoughts.
Valerie HatcherReplace that I'm too old with I'm ready to learn and I'm ready to try.
Valerie HatcherAre we going to be experts at everything?
Valerie HatcherNo.
Valerie HatcherAre we going to maybe realize that we don't even like that subject matter?
Valerie HatcherPossibly.
Valerie HatcherBut it's about reframing.
Valerie HatcherSo here's an affirmation for you when you fall into that trap.
Valerie HatcherJust say, I am capable of learning new things, no matter my age.
Valerie HatcherAnd then start small.
Valerie HatcherTake one small step toward a new skill or goal.
Valerie HatcherHere's an example.
Valerie HatcherWatch a beginner tutorial on something that interests you and then surround yourself with growth minded people.
Valerie HatcherConnect with others who inspire you to grow and learn.
Valerie HatcherI have that person in my life.
Valerie HatcherYashi is so advanced in all areas of business, marketing, video, tech stuff.
Valerie HatcherI won't ever be her, but watching her pushes me to aspire to learn more and celebrate every win.
Valerie HatcherWhether it's learning to post a photo on Instagram or walking maybe a new trail.
Valerie HatcherOr just celebrate your progress.
Valerie HatcherFear Failure is at the root of so many of these beliefs.
Valerie HatcherBut here's the thing, and I alluded to this earlier.
Valerie HatcherFailure isn't the opposite of success, it's part of it.
Valerie HatcherSo let me give you a quick framework of overcoming fear.
Valerie HatcherIdentify the fear.
Valerie HatcherAre you afraid of looking silly?
Valerie HatcherOf not being good enough?
Valerie HatcherPinpoint what's holding you back and then reframe the failure.
Valerie HatcherFailure isn't final, it's feedback.
Valerie HatcherEvery expert started as a beginner.
Valerie HatcherAnd then celebrate the process.
Valerie HatcherFocus on progress, not perfection.
Valerie HatcherTrying is the win.
Valerie HatcherSo let's pause for a moment.
Valerie HatcherI want you to think about something that you've always wanted to do but you've told yourself you couldn't because of your age.
Valerie HatcherYou got it.
Valerie HatcherNow ask yourself, where did that belief come from?
Valerie HatcherWho told you that?
Valerie HatcherWas a society, a loved one, or even yourself?
Valerie HatcherWhat's the worst thing that could happen if you try?
Valerie HatcherNow write it down.
Valerie HatcherBecause the first step to breaking through a limiting belief is to recognize it for what it is.
Valerie HatcherSo this week I challenge you to pick one thing that you've been avoiding because you think that you're too old.
Valerie HatcherMaybe it's signing up for a class or learning to use social media, or starting a blog.
Valerie HatcherWhatever it is, just take the first step and do it.
Valerie HatcherIf this episode resonated with you, then share it with a friend who might need a little nudge to break free from their own limiting beliefs.
Valerie HatcherTogether, we're rewriting the story of aging with grace, confidence, and style.
