Daniel Murray: Welcome to a new special series called The Bathroom Break, that extra 10 minutes, you either have to listen to marking tips or use the bathroom or both, but I don't recommend. But that's your choice.
Jay Schwedelson: This collab is gonna be super fun. We have Daniel Murray from the Marketing Millennials and me, Jay Schon from the Do This Not That podcast and subject line.com.
Jay Schwedelson: Each episode in this series, we are gonna go over with tips about different marketing topics. And if you want to be in the bathroom, fine, just don't tell us about it. Thanks for checking it out.
Daniel Murray: We are back and this is the. Hundredth episode of the Bath and Break. Surprise. We made it this far, to be honest. Um, it was a little joke of an idea that turned into a joke of a podcast. Um, and now we're gonna have the hundredth episode, and I'm here with the J Wilson. I'll do this, not that podcast, and I said it right the first time.
Daniel Murray: Um, but I want to kick this off and ask you something very important, which is
Jay Schwedelson: okay.
Daniel Murray: What is your most embarrassing story in your career?
Jay Schwedelson: Oh, that's nice. Yeah, for the hundredth episode. I'm glad we're doing special stuff because I, I genuinely didn't think we would make it past episode two of this literal nonsense trash.
Jay Schwedelson: And then I wanna know your most embarrassing one on the back end of all this stuff we're gonna talk about today. But I had one experience in my career that really, um, was really the end of me. So what happened was I was at a conference. And, um, I was at the conference, hotel, and, you know, the conference hotel, everybody stays in the conference, hotel, like every single person.
Jay Schwedelson: Well, I lied to like 10 different people and they said, do you wanna go out for dinner tonight? You wanna make plans? I said, no, I got plans with other people, but it was a lie. I didn't wanna go out with them. I said I had other plans, so what I did was I went in my own room and I, well, I was watching House Hunters.
Jay Schwedelson: I'll never forget. I love that show. And I ordered a cheeseburger and then like a disgusting fat slob. The, the food came, and then I was eating it in only my, my bo, my Tommy John boxers, like no shirt, which is gross. You don't wanna eat a cheeseburger with no shirt on, nothing else. And then I'll never forget I finished the burger.
Jay Schwedelson: Okay. And then it was one of the, you know, still the old school trays, right. And I wheel it out into the hallway. Then all of a sudden they hear and the door shut behind me. And I did the dumbest thing a human being has ever done is I knocked on the door, which I still don't understand exactly why I was doing that.
Jay Schwedelson: 'cause I was the only one in the room.
Daniel Murray: Lemme
Jay Schwedelson: back in then I realize, yeah, I was bang on the door. I was like, I'm so screwed. I was just my boxers and I'm like, oh my God, what I gonna do? And I go, that's it. I just gotta go. And I thought there'd be like a phone by the elevator that they like used to have that there was no phone at the elevator.
Jay Schwedelson: I got in the elevator and then there were people in the elevator because I was like, I go to the front desk and there was a, by the way, there was a mirror in the elevator. You do not want to see yourself with no shirt on with other people in the elevator having just eaten the cheeseburger. It was a horrible moment.
Jay Schwedelson: Get off the elevator and everyone from the conference is like there with their badges on. People are like, Hey, they're giving me a weird look, and I get to the front desk. I'll never forget the guy at the front desk goes, how can I help you? I'm like. Dude, I'm naked. I need to get into my room. He goes, do you have id?
Jay Schwedelson: I go, no, I don't have Id clown. And it was a horrible moment. So that's my story.
Daniel Murray: I don't think I could even top that with a, a more embarrassing story than that. I think mine, I, I have not had that of a embarrassing story. Um,
Jay Schwedelson: I hope nobody's Alright, we're gonna get to your story at the end, but I wanna do this special episode, something we've never done, which is mildly embarrassing.
Jay Schwedelson: Which is, I'm gonna ask you a series of Never have I evers, and then we're both gonna answer them 'cause we're cheesy and this episode's cheesy. What do you think about that?
Daniel Murray: Yep. Let's go
Jay Schwedelson: our hundredth episode. Alright, here we go. Have you ever sent out a promotion? Uh, never have I ever used Last Chance in a promotion when it was actually not last chance on the promotion.
Daniel Murray: Oh, I've definitely put last chance promotion. Uh, who hasn't done that, right? You, it's like seven
Jay Schwedelson: last chances.
Daniel Murray: Yeah. And get emails back. I thought the f the, the se last email was the last chance.
Jay Schwedelson: Uh, you always text me too. I said not like last chance of register and then, you know, it's not, you're like, this is not last chance.
Jay Schwedelson: Jay
Daniel Murray: will say. There's 700 spots left for a, for a virtual event, and it's free. There's no 700 spots left.
Jay Schwedelson: Like, wait, there's a store near where I live and like once a month it has a giant thing that says store closing, but they're like only closing for that day. It's amazing.
Daniel Murray: Oh, that's ho that's, that's great.
Jay Schwedelson: It's amazing.
Daniel Murray: I also think it's good to just have like beside like clo, like sold out, like instead of clothes like sold, like has sold outside. Halfway through the day, instead of saying they, they just go home and they just put sold out. Uh, I think it's smart.
Jay Schwedelson: Alright. Never have I ever deleted a post, uh, because it flopped.
Daniel Murray: Oh. Once a week. Once a week. I, I think, I think, I think people shouldn't be afraid of doing that. I think some, if you, you can delete posts. It's not a bad thing to delete posts. It's not. I don't care. Um,
Jay Schwedelson: does that, I, I, well, you know all about it better than I do on the algorithms like Instagram or LinkedIn.
Jay Schwedelson: If you delete a post, does that hurt your algorithm or your whatever?
Daniel Murray: No, but I think if you delete a post and repost something pretty similar, I think that I, I, it is not proven, but I think I've seen negative net results of reposting the same post on the same day. 'cause I messed up.
Jay Schwedelson: All right. Never have I ever used the re colon in a subject line that was not actually a reply email.
Daniel Murray: Oh, that, that was probably like 12 years ago on a, like, you know, the sales emails where you used to the sales email? Yeah. That, that's a horrible tactic, by the way. I, I feel like a terrible of a marketer to do that.
Jay Schwedelson: No, I, I, I'm, I'm so against that tactic. I don't care if it works. I just think it's total absolute garbage.
Jay Schwedelson: Alright. Never have I ever laughed at a joke that I didn't actually understand.
Daniel Murray: Oh, who doesn't do that? I mean, I feel like you just laugh at some things just to like give comical relief to things. Uh,
Jay Schwedelson: I think everything's funny.
Daniel Murray: You. Yeah.
Jay Schwedelson: All right. I got another one.
Daniel Murray: Wait, you didn't answer the question. Why am I answer the question? You don't
Jay Schwedelson: answer. Yeah, no, I know. I always laugh at everything. That's a hundred percent true. Alright, this one I'll, I'll answer also, never have I ever pretended I didn't see someone to avoid talking to them.
Daniel Murray: Oh. Like a week ago. I've done that, do that
Jay Schwedelson: daily.
Daniel Murray: I, yeah, like I, I saw someone new at Costco and I'm like. I duck. I duck. And at conferences I, I purposely duck. Like I don't want to get into conversations.
Jay Schwedelson: You're like six, five, you ducking doesn't really
Daniel Murray: affect. Yeah, well it's even more embarrassing if you try ducking and they see you.
Daniel Murray: That's embarrassing. Like you start trying like ducking and then they see you ducking. You just have to come back from that. No, why are you ducking?
Jay Schwedelson: Alright, and since this is the hundredth episode. Of the bathroom break. Never have I ever used a porta potty.
Daniel Murray: I mean, I've done it a bunch of times.
Jay Schwedelson: I mean,
Daniel Murray: I mean, have you
Jay Schwedelson: Right.
Jay Schwedelson: It's the most, by the way, is there anything more disgusting? Like when you really think about what a porta potty, is there anything more disgusting on earth than a porta-potty? Like,
Daniel Murray: but
Jay Schwedelson: I, how did that get approved?
Daniel Murray: But I also think the worst type of porta-potties are had like. Festivals when it's a hun, a hundred plus degrees outside and you're hot in the porta potty and it's a hundred degrees and you're sweating in there and you're, and it's smelling and you, all you wanna do is get out, but you need to go so badly.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah.
Daniel Murray: People gonna love hearing this.
Jay Schwedelson: They should be like illegal. I mean they just really should be.
Daniel Murray: Yeah. But where are people gonna go? Just on the ground? The festival.
Jay Schwedelson: Alright, before we run outta time of this thing, I wanna know your embarrassing story. You already heard mine.
Daniel Murray: I don't have one That's so embarrassing.
Daniel Murray: I mean, I've done embarrassing, like things I regret in marketing, but this is probably relatable, but I, I got super embarrassed that it happened is, and Jay does it, probably doesn't know about the story, but me and JJ were going on stage at Inbound, um, and. Five minutes before I start sweating and having a, the biggest panic attack.
Daniel Murray: It
Jay Schwedelson: was a panel that you were gonna be on
Daniel Murray: too. Yeah, a panel that I was moderating this panel with my wife, Ari Jay, some other two. And granted. They brought someone on the panel and I kept saying in the panel, this guy, 'cause I didn't know remember his name on the panel, so I was just gonna say n to you and this guy.
Daniel Murray: But that's another story that was really embarrassing for me. Uh, I said everybody else's name, but I did forgot the guy's name. I was like, this guy. Uh, so. I'm having a panic attack and I'm sweating and I'm, I said to Ari, I'm like, I'm not going on stage. I'm not gonna stage. I'm gonna walk out right now.
Daniel Murray: I'm gonna walk out this sweating. Um, and then one minute before stage they're like, oh, we're going on stage. And uh, I'm like, Ari, I'm leaving. And she's like. Okay, fine. I'll moderate. So, Ari, I, Ari, had to take the whole thing and moderate, and I'm sitting there, I get on stage and the first thing I do when I get on stage is like, hi.
Daniel Murray: And I start waving at everybody because I was so shy. I, I, I was so, I was in such a pain. I swear I was, my heart was racing outta my, but I was sweating. It was, it was super embarrassing. It's not embarrass,
Jay Schwedelson: not so weird though. When I see you on stage, you seem so chill. You don't seem like, like
Daniel Murray: you're no inside of me.
Daniel Murray: So chill inside of me to my core. It's, it's bad. Uh,
Jay Schwedelson: but you know what? It's good for everyone to hear that because anybody who says, I've done a zillion speeches, anyone doesn't, says you don't get a little bit, uh, anxiety or whatever. It is very normal to have nerves and anxiety and feel weird about talking in front of big groups, small groups or whatever it's called, being a human.
Jay Schwedelson: Uh, I don't care what anybody
Daniel Murray: says. I, if you look at Jay before going on stage, this guy is chugging Celsius. That's true. True. And like walking around, like smiling at people and then gets on stage. Yeah, I am.
Jay Schwedelson: Yeah.
Daniel Murray: I'm like, can I get a beta blocker please? Uh, can I get a beta blocker? But I get on stage please.
Daniel Murray: Like, does anyone have a beta blocker? I need it.
Jay Schwedelson: That's normal. Right. Well, we did it a hundredth episode. Daniel, what is your prediction? How many episodes will this thing continue on for before everyone's like, this is ridiculous.
Daniel Murray: Um.
Jay Schwedelson: 101
Daniel Murray: after this episode when we talk about porter parties and how embarrassing Jay eating a hamburger without a shirt on
Jay Schwedelson: naked, right?
Daniel Murray: Yeah. I just couldn't imagine. I heard Ed Sheeran did that once, like, but he was actually slip, like was sleepwalking and he was actually naked, like in the hallway and they had, he had to like paid the hotel to get rid of the footage. Uh.
Jay Schwedelson: Oh, I should have done
Daniel Murray: that. Lucky. Lucky. Like this was probably like not where you're like the Jay Sch Delson right now.
Jay Schwedelson: No, I'd actually given a speech that day, which is the best part. Like, oh, great.
Daniel Murray: Period.
Jay Schwedelson: You're like, oh, waving at me. I'm like,
Daniel Murray: good speech, dude.
Jay Schwedelson: Is something wrong
Daniel Murray: with you?
Jay Schwedelson: I'm like, Hey, can I get the slides? I'm like, bro, you know. Well, we did it again in a hundred episodes. I can't wait for the next a hundred.
Jay Schwedelson: Everyone follow the show? Follow the marking, millennials. Follow, do this, not that and find your local porta potty. And, and think of Daniel while you're in there.
Daniel Murray: And if you, me mentioned this, re this episode and your, the reviews that we know you listen to this episode and do it on, do this stuff, that podcast, I wanna see it.
Daniel Murray: Peace, everybody.
