Let's get started from First Corinthians 5, 6, 8.

Reading from the message your flip and callous arrogance in these things bothers me.

You pass it off as a small thing, but it's anything but that.

Yeast too is a small thing, but it works its way through the whole batch of bread dough pretty fast.

So get rid of this yeast.

Our true identity is flat and plain, not puffed up with the wrong kind of ingredient.

The Messiah.

Our Passover lamb has already been sacrificed for the Passover meal and we are the unraised bread part of the feast.

So let's live out our part in the feast not as raised bread swollen with the yeast of evil, but as flat bread.

Simple, genuine, unpretentious.

Well, my good friends, today's scripture reading is a powerful metaphor from Paul's writing his letter to the Church at Corinth First Corinthians, where he talks about these images that are very relatable Yeast and bread and authentic living.

Let's get into some points to ponder.

There is authenticity over performance.

Paul's metaphor of unpretentious flat bread versus puffed up leavened bread speaks to our modern struggle with authenticity.

In our social media age, we often are tempted to present an inflated version of ourselves.

Yet authentic spirituality calls us to be genuine rather than performative in our faith journey.

There's also the point about collective responsibility.

The imagery of yeast spreading through the dough reminds us that our actions and choices affect our entire community.

In progressive faith, we emphasize our interconnectedness and shared responsibility for creating just and compassionate spaces.

Small actions, whether positive or negative, can have far reaching effects.

A third point is about reimagining traditional symbols.

Paul uses here the Passover imagery and we can find a fresh meaning for today through this.

Both through rather than focusing on traditional concepts of sacrifice and sin, we might see Jesus as modeling radical simplicity and authenticity.

This invites us to strip away any pretense and embrace our true selves as beloved children of God.

Here's your action step today.

Identify an area in your life where you might be a little bit puffed up with pretense or performative behavior.

It could be in your social media presence, perhaps your religious practices, or maybe in some interpersonal relationship that you have, and choose a concrete way to be more authentic in that space or with those people.

Perhaps it means posting more honestly in your online social media, or admitting uncertainty in your faith journey, or having a vulnerable conversation with a friend we're going to pray in just a moment.
