Is there power in a community?
Speaker:What do you think?
Speaker:I feel like it depends on the community.
Speaker:I say it depends a lot, right?
Speaker:But the reality is it does
Speaker:depend on the community.
Speaker:We have just come back from the first
Speaker:Thriving Women Retreat for 2024 and
Speaker:In their own words, It was amazeballs.
Speaker:What made it a maze balls?
Speaker:It wasn't necessarily the content.
Speaker:It wasn't necessarily the location,
Speaker:but it was the power of community.
Speaker:It's sitting back and realizing that
Speaker:others have similar struggles to you.
Speaker:It's sitting back and going, Oh, they
Speaker:might have some ideas that might help me.
Speaker:We had a client who was in Thriving
Speaker:Women and she owns Allied Health
Speaker:Practice, and she came into
Speaker:one of our hot seat sessions.
Speaker:Now, for those who don't know
Speaker:what a hot seat session is, a hot
Speaker:seat session, well, try say that
Speaker:really fast, a hot seat session.
Speaker:Is a session where we come together,
Speaker:it's a small group of people and each
Speaker:person brings an opportunity or a
Speaker:threat or a challenge or something that
Speaker:they want to kick around in the group.
Speaker:And she came in and she just
Speaker:had the news that a couple of
Speaker:staff members needed to leave.
Speaker:One to go on maternity leave.
Speaker:the other one was leaving because
Speaker:their performance wasn't great.
Speaker:she came in feeling a bit
Speaker:dejected and a bit deflated.
Speaker:20 minutes with us and she
Speaker:was like a different person.
Speaker:And I'll tell you why in a minute.
Speaker:Why is the power of
Speaker:community so important?
Speaker:I ask myself this question constantly.
Speaker:And I think there's a few reasons.
Speaker:Firstly, business is tough doing.
Speaker:Business with other people
Speaker:makes it feel more doable.
Speaker:We can do hard things.
Speaker:I also think business can be lonely.
Speaker:If you don't have people around
Speaker:you, you can get in your head a lot.
Speaker:A lot of us work from home these days.
Speaker:A lot of us are solopreneurs
Speaker:and you can get in your head.
Speaker:And so having a community
Speaker:helps combat that loneliness.
Speaker:There is an epidemic.
Speaker:That is around loneliness
Speaker:and that's not great.
Speaker:We as human beings, we need connection.
Speaker:As business owners, oh my
Speaker:goodness, we need connection.
Speaker:And the final thing is when we
Speaker:have a community of people who
Speaker:know us, know us relatively well,
Speaker:they can be sounding boards.
Speaker:They can be cheerleaders.
Speaker:They can hold us accountable
Speaker:to the things that we say
Speaker:that we're going to do.
Speaker:And isn't that what having
Speaker:a community is about?
Speaker:Have you had a community for
Speaker:a while and you feel like,
Speaker:oof, maybe I've outgrown it?
Speaker:Do you need to refresh your community?
Speaker:Who is it that you are hanging out with?
Speaker:I think having a community
Speaker:is so, so important.
Speaker:So important, in fact, that
Speaker:when I left my corporate roleI
Speaker:joined a community immediately
Speaker:and it has been the best
Speaker:thing that I have done.
Speaker:Did it feel uncomfortable?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Did it feel hard?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Did I not know anyone?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:But then I got in there, I threw
Speaker:everything I had at it and you start
Speaker:to create beautiful relationships
Speaker:and friendships with people.
Speaker:And this helps in life.
Speaker:It helps in business.
Speaker:It helps everywhere really.
Speaker:And so I'm all about community.
Speaker:I'm all about connection.
Speaker:And I think that those two things
Speaker:can go hand in hand in business.
Speaker:I think the other thing that I
Speaker:have realized is that you need
Speaker:to find the right community.
Speaker:There are a lot of communities
Speaker:out there and there are a lot
Speaker:of free communities out there.
Speaker:Now I have nothing against free
Speaker:communities, but I have seen people
Speaker:who have joined free communities
Speaker:and expect things that you only
Speaker:really get from a paid community.
Speaker:And so this may be an unpopular
Speaker:opinion and I'm okay with that.
Speaker:But sometimes you need to pay some cash.
Speaker:And have some skin in the game.
Speaker:It's almost similar to, we run
Speaker:a lot of pro bono, tickets for
Speaker:our events or our programs.
Speaker:And do you know what I find when
Speaker:we hand out the pro bono tickets?
Speaker:There's just not the
Speaker:same skin in the game.
Speaker:So if you're not paying for a community
Speaker:and you're not getting much out of your
Speaker:community, those two things add up.
Speaker:If you're paying for a community,
Speaker:you're getting the very best
Speaker:you can get out of a community.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:I also think being part of a community
Speaker:means, you know, you have to be all in.
Speaker:You can't just half turn up, half show
Speaker:up, like you have to throw yourself in..
Speaker:I would love to know from you, have
Speaker:you sat back and thought about the
Speaker:community that you're currently in?
Speaker:Have you sat back and thought
Speaker:about whether this is still
Speaker:the right community for you?
Speaker:Have you?
Speaker:looked at your community and looked
Speaker:at the people that you are hanging
Speaker:out with, liaising with, co working
Speaker:with and thought to yourself, Oh,
Speaker:I might need a little upgrade.
Speaker:That's okay.
Speaker:We grew up in business.
Speaker:We evolve in business there is
Speaker:absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Speaker:Back to our client who came
Speaker:along for the hot seat.
Speaker:She came along for the hot seat and
Speaker:she walked in a little bit deflated
Speaker:and wondering how she was going
Speaker:to get what she needed to get.
Speaker:She thought she would have to go out
Speaker:to a recruitment agency, she'd have
Speaker:to go into a market that was just
Speaker:not turning up the best candidates
Speaker:and take the best of a worst bunch.
Speaker:She didn't have to do
Speaker:any of those things.
Speaker:As we kicked it around, as we looked
Speaker:at her org structure, as we looked
Speaker:at her culture, what we realised is
Speaker:that she had people sitting there.
Speaker:waiting to be promoted.
Speaker:And so we carved out a couple of
Speaker:things for her to do, including
Speaker:promoting one of her existing staff.
Speaker:And what that actually meant a
Speaker:few months later is that that
Speaker:person stepped up to the plate.
Speaker:They did all the things
Speaker:they needed to do.
Speaker:They have shown themselves
Speaker:to be a great people manager
Speaker:and it's a win win all round.
Speaker:Now, yes, she still needs to fill that
Speaker:person's role because you can't bring
Speaker:someone up and then not backfill.
Speaker:So she needs to do that, but it's
Speaker:an easier fill than replacing
Speaker:one of her senior people.
Speaker:That's the power of a community.
Speaker:That you can come up with these things.
Speaker:You can enact them in a way that
Speaker:works and you can go from there.
Speaker:I want to tell you one other quick
Speaker:story on our thriving women retreat.
Speaker:We were talking about the offers
Speaker:that we would put out into the world.
Speaker:And through 16 of us having different
Speaker:conversations, one of the ladies
Speaker:came up with an offer that was
Speaker:absolutely in her sweet spot that
Speaker:she could enact straight away.
Speaker:And two days later, she
Speaker:had filled that offer.
Speaker:She could not have done that on her own.
Speaker:The power of the community pushed her,
Speaker:propelled her to get those things locked
Speaker:into the diary, to get the landing page
Speaker:up, to make sure that she had people
Speaker:that she could send the offer to, to
Speaker:That is the power of the community.
Speaker:So next time you're out and about,
Speaker:have a look at your community.
Speaker:And if they are not the people you
Speaker:need to be with right now, where do
Speaker:you need to go to get your community?
Speaker:And have fun.
Speaker:As I say, life's too short.
Speaker:Have fun.
Speaker:Bye for now.
