[00:00:00] Eric Goranson: It's around the house when it comes to remodeling and renovating your home. There is a lot to know though. We've got you covered. This is around the house. Welcome to the Round the House Show. This is where we talk about everything, about your home. Robin, do you hope you get the most outta your home through information and education?

[00:00:32] Eric Goranson: Thanks for joining us today. Well, I got a couple important topics to hit on First. We need to talk about some recalls cuz uh, you know, we always grab these in the middle of the week, but I tell you what, there is a massive amount this week that could affect you and the stuff inside your home. First off, all you Peloton users, they just recalled 2 million exercise bikes due to fallen injury hazards.

[00:00:56] Eric Goranson: The bike seat post assembly can break, turn, use, [00:01:00] and, uh, about 2.2 million of those things out there. So, They have a new post to get ahold of them for a free seat and post. That can be self-install. That's the first one. Second one, our friends over at American Woodmark. Is re recalls to repair continental cabinets in Hampton Bay Kitchen wall cabinets due to impact hazard.

[00:01:23] Eric Goranson: Now these are things to tell you. One thing, when you see these recalls, it tells you that, uh, when this happens, that continental, which is one of the American woodmark brands in Hampton Bay, are pretty much the same cabin. I bet they went down the same production line. So if you're out comparing cabinets and you're looking at Hampton Bay to Continental, you probably are looking at the exact same box.

[00:01:46] Eric Goranson: These cabinets can detach from the wall, posing an impact hazard. So they say that you should immediately stop using the recalled cabinet and contact American Woodmark for a free repair kit, which includes two brackets with [00:02:00] covers and screws. And, uh, they will, uh, assist with the repair kit installation upon request about 235 cabinet, the 235,000 units.

[00:02:13] Eric Goranson: So that tells me usually how American wood marks build these cabinets. And I've seen these built many times. Many times these, these are a lower end kind of entry level cabinet, they're assembled. But what happens is, is the particle board sides are rabbited. Back there and there is a hot glue that holds that whole box together in the backside with maybe some staples depending on how it was built, and if they didn't use the right hot glue or didn't use enough of it, or didn't use any staples, those things can happen on a production line.

[00:02:47] Eric Goranson: So obviously there's a bunch of 'em. 235,000 cabinets is a lot of cabinets. For them going down the production line cuz this would be your wall cabinets that they're recalling. So they've got a lot of those things. So [00:03:00] that's, um, months of production that are obviously having an issue of falling off the wall.

[00:03:07] Eric Goranson: So if you have American Woodmark or Continental Hampton Bay, take a look, that could be a big one. So that's a key right there for all your cocktail drinkers. World market recalls, cocktail shakers due to laceration hazard. The glass cocktail shakers can crack and break during use. So, uh, be careful that don't use that.

[00:03:27] Eric Goranson: They will bring those back. And now here's one of my favorites. If you bought a Blue Ridge utility knife from Target, Yeah, this is for you, serious home improvement people out there. If your, uh, really cheapy six inch utility knife says Blue ridge in the side first, go get a good one. Second one. Consumers should immediately carefully inspect the packaging.

[00:03:49] Eric Goranson: Determine where the blade tip is protruding to the package. Yes, the utility knife can become unlocked and come through in the original packaging, posing a [00:04:00] laceration hatcher hazard. So, Just go get a better knife guys. Just get rid of that one. There's 36, 30 6,250 people bought a Blue Ridge knife from, from, uh, target.

[00:04:11] Eric Goranson: I would go get a different one. That's one that's, uh, little, little scary there. Berkshire Innovations, we recalled Sahara folding food dehydrators due to fire hazard. The heater fan can fail and cause a component to overheat and catch fire. So be careful that one. And then, uh, that's most of the big ones right there.

[00:04:31] Eric Goranson: Let me make sure there's nothing else. Oh yeah, there was another one here OD L OD L recalls severe weather door glass inserts due to hurricane zone windborn debris. Injury hazards during severe weather conditions such as hurricanes, adhesive bond holding the door glass inserts can become separated from the door, causing risk of injury or property damage.

[00:04:54] Eric Goranson: Um, Let's see. Consumers need to be aware that the recalled severe weather door glass in insert may not [00:05:00] function as expected and contact OD L to arrange free repair by qualified technician. So, uh, about 39,000 of those. So if you've got an O D L O D L door, That's a key right there. And then, uh, Walker Edison Furniture, um, recalls twin beds, bunk beds due to fallen li uh, impact hazards.

[00:05:23] Eric Goranson: That's one there. And then there's just a ton of, uh, pool drain covers and, uh, other stuff like that that are, that are keys out there. So if you've got some pool drain covers, take a look at that. That's a pretty specialized one. And that covers all of our stuff for this week. Uh, still had 2.2 million of the DeWalt Stanley Craftsman fiberglass sledgehammers.

[00:05:45] Eric Goranson: If you're catching that, that got recalled. Make sure that you don't have one of those. Well, this week I wanted to talk about two things. It's the time of year that I wanna bring up, and this is, these are two important safety tips that kind of package up well with these recalls. [00:06:00] First off, before you go out and have this, uh, you know, labor Day barbecue or friends coming over, if you've got a raised up wooden deck, please take 20 minutes and do a solid inspection, even if you're not a DIYer.

[00:06:15] Eric Goranson: Get underneath there and take a look. I wanna make sure that I see structural bolts and screws holding that ledger to the house, so that's that flat board where the deck is connected to the house. If that is nailed, do not get on it until you have structural screws holding that to the house. If it is punky, rotten, nasty.

[00:06:40] Eric Goranson: And you can take a, uh, a screwdriver and push into it easily, or if it seems soft. Replace it. Do not put anybody on the deck. Go around and check all the connections. Make sure the deck is level. Make sure it hasn't settled. Make sure that the upright posts are level and plum. Make sure [00:07:00] that this thing is looking good.

[00:07:01] Eric Goranson: Handrails, are they attached? If two people go leaning up against the handrail, are they gonna fall off? These are all solid things. I want you to go around and inspect it and if you'd like to have an inspection sheet, go ahead and email me. I can get you that. Uh, just head over to around the house online.com.

[00:07:18] Eric Goranson: Send a message over there and I will send you a PDF of a deck inspection sheet for you to take a peek at. That way you can go around and make sure your deck is safe. The last thing you wanna do is we see it happen all the time where these things pull off the house and they collapse because people either didn't maintain them, didn't originally fasten 'em correctly to the house, or they overloaded them.

[00:07:42] Eric Goranson: So let's just make sure that they're safe and everything's connected well and you've got all the right metal fasteners and all the right places. If big pieces of wood are connecting, I wanna see a fastener there that is metal, a Simpson strong tie or similar, holding it together. And that is an easy fix.[00:08:00]

[00:08:00] Eric Goranson: If you don't have it, you can get down in there and re fasten things and have 'em looking so much better. And the last one is probably one of the most important ones. We see this happen on the news anywhere in the country where kids are falling out of windows, and it is so easy to fix this. If you have young children, if you have an aunt, an uncle, or a grandparent, and you have young children come over and visit, make sure that you have window door locks on all the windows on the second floor.

[00:08:33] Eric Goranson: The kids are going to open the windows at. Here's the thing, it's so simple to do. For about 30 bucks, you can get a handful of these things online and go out and put those locks on there, so they open just a few inches. Kinda like what you would see with the railing. You don't want anybody to get through it.

[00:08:49] Eric Goranson: Kids mistakenly understand that they can lean up against that screen and that screen is gonna hold them, and that screen is great for holding bugs and dirt out, but it is horrible at holding humans [00:09:00] inside a building. And then number two on this rule is to make sure that you've got nothing stacked in front of the window so the kid can get up in there.

[00:09:10] Eric Goranson: So dressers, toy, chest, those are ladders to help kids get up into that window. So make sure there's, that's a clear area in front of the window. And then have the discussion with the kiddo too. Hey, you can fall out. That's a long fall. You will fall off from this. Having that hard discussion with 'em to make sure that they understand that they can't open that window and lean up against it, that could save a life.

[00:09:34] Eric Goranson: And we see so many kids get injured and killed this time of year because of windows being open by children. Or adults in kids pushing up against the screen. We've already had a couple here in my area already this year, and it is up to the adults to make sure that doesn't happen. And you don't wanna see a kid get hurt.

[00:09:54] Eric Goranson: You don't wanna see a, a, uh, relative get hurt. And knowing that you could have spent 20 [00:10:00] bucks and somebody else told you and you didn't do it. So make sure that you've got that set up so kids aren't falling outta windows. I mean, Eric Clapton. You know, he wrote a famous song about his child falling out of a window.

[00:10:13] Eric Goranson: And, uh, you know, that's, that's a sad story that could be easily prevented. So make sure you've got that set up. Make sure that you're good to go and, uh, that's gonna save some lives out there. Keep some kids from getting hurt and, uh, if there's ever a fire, they're easy to pop off. You know, as an adult, it's not that big a deal.

[00:10:32] Eric Goranson: But, uh, make sure that you've got those window locks on there so you can get that safe. All right, everybody, have a great rest of the week. Stay cool out there. I know we've had some heat here in my area. I'm sure you do in yours, and enjoy it. We've got a great show coming up this weekend.
