Speaker 1 00:00:01

Devotion is easy when miracles are unfolding.

Speaker 1 00:00:07

It's easier to follow when the crowds are pressing in, when hope is rising.

Speaker 1 00:00:12

And when the future feels bright.

Speaker 1 00:00:16

But what happens when the sky grows dark?

Speaker 1 00:00:20

When the crowd turns hostile

Speaker 1 00:00:22

When the one you love is lifted onto a cross.

Speaker 1 00:00:28

In the Gospel of Mark, chapter fifteen, verses forty and forty-one, while many disciples scattered in fear.

Speaker 1 00:00:36

A small group remained at a distance, and among them stood Mary Magdalene.

Speaker 1 00:00:44

She could not stop the suffering

Speaker 1 00:00:47

She could not change the outcome, but she refused to leave.

Speaker 1 00:00:54

Sometimes the deepest expression of faith is simply this

Speaker 1 00:00:58

Staying near to Jesus when it costs you something.

Speaker 1 00:01:03

This is Devotion to Jesus.

Speaker 1 00:01:06

One bite at a time.

Speaker 1 00:02:06

I'm your host, Randy Black.

Speaker 1 00:02:10

Today we conclude our three-episode journey through the life of Mary Magdalene by turning to Mark chapter 15.

Speaker 1 00:02:17

Verses forty and forty-one.

Speaker 1 00:02:20

The scene is stark and sobering.

Speaker 1 00:02:23

The sky is darkened.

Speaker 1 00:02:25

The crowd is restless.

Speaker 1 00:02:27

Roman soldiers stand watch.

Speaker 1 00:02:30

And Jesus, the one who healed, taught, and transformed lives, is hanging on a cross

Speaker 1 00:02:40

Hope appears crucified with him.

Speaker 1 00:02:43

Many of the disciples have fled.

Speaker 1 00:02:46

Fear has scattered them into hiding

Speaker 1 00:02:49

But not everyone left.

Speaker 1 00:02:54

Mark tells us that some women were there looking on afar off.

Speaker 1 00:02:59

Among them was Mary Magdalene, the woman whom Jesus had once delivered from deep spiritual bondage, whose life had been radically changed by his mercy

Speaker 1 00:03:13

Before she witnessed the empty tomb, she stood near the cross.

Speaker 1 00:03:18

Before she proclaimed, I have seen the Lord, she watched him suffer

Speaker 1 00:03:25

Before resurrection joy, there was crucifixion sorrow.

Speaker 1 00:03:31

These verses may be brief, but they reveal something powerful about devotion

Speaker 1 00:03:36

And on this episode, we're going to explore what Mary's steadfast presence teaches us about loyal discipleship.

Speaker 1 00:03:43

Faith that remains when following Christ is costly, confusing.

Speaker 1 00:03:48

And seemingly without reward.

Speaker 1 00:03:53

Before we jump into the scripture, let's go ahead and open up with a word of prayer

Speaker 1 00:03:57

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the example of Mary Magdalene and a woman delivered from darkness and restored by your mercy.

Speaker 1 00:04:07

As we reflect on her steadfast presence at the cross, teach us what it means to remain near to Christ when fear rises, when hope feels distant, and when the world seems hostile.

Speaker 1 00:04:22

Strengthen our hearts to endure in seasons of sorrow.

Speaker 1 00:04:26

Deepen our love to serve faithfully.

Speaker 1 00:04:30

And anchor our devotion in the one who calls us by name.

Speaker 1 00:04:35

May we follow you not only when the path is easy, but especially when it is costly, uncertain, or misunderstood

Speaker 1 00:04:47

We ask all these things in the name of your son Jesus.

Speaker 1 00:04:51

Amen.

Speaker 1 00:04:54

Mark writes, there were also women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene.

Speaker 1 00:05:01

Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered unto him, and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem

Speaker 1 00:05:12

Though brief, these verses speak volumes about devotion, courage, and the nature of discipleship

Speaker 1 00:05:20

First, consider Mary's presence at the crucifixion.

Speaker 1 00:05:26

While most of the disciples fled in fear, Mary stood near, though afar off.

Speaker 1 00:05:33

The crowd pressed around, Roman soldiers patrolled, and the air was thick with tension and grief.

Speaker 1 00:05:41

Yet she did not abandon him

Speaker 1 00:05:45

Even at a distance, her heart and soul were close to Jesus.

Speaker 1 00:05:50

She did not need to be at the front to demonstrate her loyalty

Speaker 1 00:05:54

Her devotion was marked by steadfast proximity, even when visibility and influence were impossible

Speaker 1 00:06:04

Second, Mark reminds us that Mary's faithfulness was cultivated over time.

Speaker 1 00:06:09

She had followed Jesus in Galilee, witnessing his teaching, his miracles, and his mercy

Speaker 1 00:06:14

She had ministered to him, meeting practical needs, offering care, and living out her transformed life daily.

Speaker 1 00:06:21

Remember.

Speaker 1 00:06:22

This is the same Mary Magdalene whom Jesus had delivered from the seven devils in Luke chapter 8, verse 2, rescuing her from darkness and restoring her to purpose.

Speaker 1 00:06:34

That profound transformation had prepared her to endure this hour, to stand firm where others fled, and to embody steadfast love in the face of suffering.

Speaker 1 00:06:47

The word ministered is striking.

Speaker 1 00:06:49

It shows that discipleship is more than admiration or belief.

Speaker 1 00:06:54

It is active engagement, labor, and service.

Speaker 1 00:06:57

Mary's devotion

Speaker 1 00:07:00

was visible not only in her presence at the cross, but in the countless unseen acts of faithfulness that had sustained Jesus' ministry over time.

Speaker 1 00:07:10

Her faithfulness was practical, relational, and persistent.

Speaker 1 00:07:17

Look closer.

Speaker 1 00:07:18

Mark notes that many other women also followed Jesus to Jerusalem.

Speaker 1 00:07:23

Mary was not alone, yet her devotion is highlighted.

Speaker 1 00:07:28

Perhaps this is because she exemplifies a faith.

Speaker 1 00:07:32

that is deeply personal and consistently practiced, a faith that does not waver when hope seems lost.

Speaker 1 00:07:41

Imagine the scene.

Speaker 1 00:07:43

The sky darkened.

Speaker 1 00:07:46

The earth trembled.

Speaker 1 00:07:48

The one she had loved who had healed and restored her was suffering in humiliation and in pain.

Speaker 1 00:07:56

Fear and uncertainty surrounded her.

Speaker 1 00:07:59

Yet Mary's love held her near.

Speaker 1 00:08:02

She could not change the events of that day

Speaker 1 00:08:05

She could not remove the nails.

Speaker 1 00:08:07

She could not silence the crowd.

Speaker 1 00:08:09

She couldn't soften the mocking words.

Speaker 1 00:08:12

All she could do was remain present

Speaker 1 00:08:17

And in that remaining, she bore witness to a faith that endures even when understanding fails.

Speaker 1 00:08:28

Mary's example teaches us something profound.

Speaker 1 00:08:32

Devotion is not measured by by visibility or popularity or control over the circumstances we face.

Speaker 1 00:08:42

It is measured by loyalty in the shadows, by courage when all seems lost, and by faithfulness when there is no applause.

Speaker 1 00:08:53

Her presence at the cross shows that true discipleship often unfolds quietly, in small acts, in steadfast endurance.

Speaker 1 00:09:04

and an unglamorous but essential service.

Speaker 1 00:09:09

Before she became the first witness of the empty tomb.

Speaker 1 00:09:12

Before she boldly declared, I have seen the Lord, Mary Magdalene had already demonstrated a devotion that would prepare her for every calling God placed before her.

Speaker 1 00:09:24

Her story reminds us that faithful service and steadfast presence are the foundation upon which greater moments of revelation are built

Speaker 1 00:09:34

Mary's example reminds us that true discipleship is measured not by where we stand in triumph, but by where we remain in trial.

Speaker 1 00:09:47

Mary Magdalene's life at the cross teaches us that true devotion is cultivated over time.

Speaker 1 00:09:55

Her faithfulness did not begin on the day of the crucifixion.

Speaker 1 00:09:58

It had been formed through seasons of following Jesus, ministering to his needs, and living under his transformative love.

Speaker 1 00:10:07

Steadfast devotion is not proven in a single dramatic moment.

Speaker 1 00:10:12

It is nurtured in the quiet, daily acts of obedience and service

Speaker 1 00:10:17

Each act of care, each choice to stay near him in Galilee prepared her for the ultimate test of courage and loyalty at the cross.

Speaker 1 00:10:30

Her presence at the crucifixion reminds us that loyalty is most remarkable when hope seems lost

Speaker 1 00:10:37

She likely did not fully understand what was unfolding.

Speaker 1 00:10:41

The messiah she had followed was dying.

Speaker 1 00:10:44

But she did not require full comprehension here to remain faithful

Speaker 1 00:10:51

Mature discipleship chooses presence over certainty, and trust over ease.

Speaker 1 00:10:57

The darkened sky, the mocking crowd, and the shadow of death.

Speaker 1 00:11:01

They could not drive her away.

Speaker 1 00:11:03

Mary's devotion shows that faith does not demand comfort or clarity.

Speaker 1 00:11:08

It demands courage and steadfastness in the face of suffering.

Speaker 1 00:11:13

Mary's ministry also shows that the unseen acts of service matter profoundly.

Speaker 1 00:11:19

She ministered unto him long before the crowds and the accolades

Speaker 1 00:11:24

In the kingdom of God, quiet service and practical care are just as vital as preaching, teaching, or leading.

Speaker 1 00:11:32

What may seem small, hidden, or unrecognized in the moment carries eternal significance.

Speaker 1 00:11:39

Her devotion

Speaker 1 00:11:40

was a living testimony of gratitude and love born from the mercy and the restoration that she had experienced herself.

Speaker 1 00:11:49

Every act of faithfulness was an investment in God's purposes, even when the results were unseen.

Speaker 1 00:11:57

Her example also challenges us to consider the cost of remaining devoted.

Speaker 1 00:12:02

Mary stood when others fled.

Speaker 1 00:12:05

She risked ridicule, danger, and grief, yet she refused to abandon her Lord.

Speaker 1 00:12:11

True devotion is often tested in seasons of trial, when fear whispers, when circumstances are uncertain, when the world does not understand.

Speaker 1 00:12:20

Standing firm in these moments is a powerful witness, both to God and to those around us

Speaker 1 00:12:28

Finally, Mary's unwavering commitment demonstrates that devotion positions us for future purpose because she stayed near Jesus at the cross.

Speaker 1 00:12:39

Mary was ready to witness the resurrection and bear the first message of hope to the disciples.

Speaker 1 00:12:45

Faithfulness in the present prepares us for the opportunities and the responsibilities God will entrust to us in the future.

Speaker 1 00:12:53

God uses the consistent, quiet devotion of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things

Speaker 1 00:13:01

Her example reminds us that the seeds of faithfulness we plant today can bear eternal fruit tomorrow.

Speaker 1 00:13:09

Mary Magdalene's life invites us to examine our own devotion.

Speaker 1 00:13:14

Where are we willing to stand, serve, and remain, even when following Christ costs us comfort, certainty, or recognition?

Speaker 1 00:13:24

How can our small persistent acts of faithfulness prepare us for the purposes God has planned?

Speaker 1 00:13:31

True devotion is measured not by what we gain.

Speaker 1 00:13:37

but by how steadfastly we follow in the shadows and in the storms, trusting that God sees and rewards faithfulness in his perfect timing

Speaker 1 00:13:49

Mary Magdalene's devotion invites us into a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Christ in every season, especially the seasons of trial, uncertainty, and sorrow.

Speaker 1 00:14:01

Her faithfulness at the cross shows us that discipleship is not always dramatic, visible, or rewarded immediately

Speaker 1 00:14:08

Sometimes the most profound acts of faith happen quietly, in the shadows, far from the applause of others.

Speaker 1 00:14:17

Consider the courage it took to remain.

Speaker 1 00:14:20

Fear and grief pressed in on all sides.

Speaker 1 00:14:23

The disciples had fled.

Speaker 1 00:14:25

The crowd was hostile.

Speaker 1 00:14:27

Even the disciples closest to Jesus could not bear to stay.

Speaker 1 00:14:31

Yet Mary stood.

Speaker 1 00:14:33

Her heart was aligned with her Lord, even when her mind may have been filled with doubt or confusion.

Speaker 1 00:14:39

Her devotion was a choice, a deliberate act of love and loyalty in the midst of hardship.

Speaker 1 00:14:47

Reflect on her past, too.

Speaker 1 00:14:49

Mary had been delivered from darkness, restored by Jesus' mercy, and given a new purpose.

Speaker 1 00:14:55

That past transformation was not only personal, it was preparatory.

Speaker 1 00:15:01

The faithfulness she demonstrated at the cross was rooted in a life shaped by encounter with the living Savior.

Speaker 1 00:15:10

Our own past experiences of grace, healing, or deliverance can equip us to stand firm what life decides to test our devotion.

Speaker 1 00:15:21

Mary's story also teaches us that true faith often requires risk.

Speaker 1 00:15:27

Staying near Jesus sometimes brings discomfort, misunderstandings, and opposition.

Speaker 1 00:15:34

Being devoted may not be convenient, celebrated, or even understood by others

Speaker 1 00:15:42

Yet her example reminds us that devotion is measured not by ease or recognition, but by the steadfastness with which we follow, serve, and love in the midst of trials

Speaker 1 00:15:55

Finally, reflection calls us to action.

Speaker 1 00:15:57

Mary's faithfulness positioned her for purpose.

Speaker 1 00:16:01

Her courage and persistence at the cross prepared her to be the first witness of the resurrection.

Speaker 1 00:16:07

entrusted with the most important message in history.

Speaker 1 00:16:12

God often works through those who remain faithful, even when their contributions seem smaller unnoticed.

Speaker 1 00:16:21

How might your steadfast presence in difficult situations prepare you for the roles and the responsibilities God is shaping you to fulfill?

Speaker 1 00:16:31

Let this reflection stir your heart to examine your own devotion.

Speaker 1 00:16:37

Where are you standing today

Speaker 1 00:16:40

Are there places in your life where fear, doubt, or discomfort have caused you to step back?

Speaker 1 00:16:47

How can you, like Mary, choose presence over fear, service over convenience, and faithfulness over ease?

Speaker 1 00:16:58

True devotion is lived moment by moment, act by act, in the quiet corners of our lives as much as in the public moments of trial

Speaker 1 00:17:12

Before we finish up the episode, let's close out with another word of prayer.

Speaker 1 00:17:18

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the steadfast devotion of Mary Magdalene, a woman whose faith and love

Speaker 1 00:17:25

remained firm even in the shadows of the cross.

Speaker 1 00:17:28

Thank you for reminding us through her example that faithfulness is measured not by ease, applause, or understanding, but by our willingness to remain near you.

Speaker 1 00:17:39

in times of trial.

Speaker 1 00:17:41

Strengthen our hearts to stand in courage when fear surrounds us, when hope seems distant, and when the world does not understand our devotion

Speaker 1 00:17:52

Lord, help us to live out our faith with the same persistent love and quiet service that marked Mary's life.

Speaker 1 00:18:02

May the acts of devotion we carry out in hidden corners of our lives prepare us for the purposes you have planned.

Speaker 1 00:18:10

Teach us to trust your timing, to follow your leading, and remain near to you even when the path is difficult.

Speaker 1 00:18:21

We ask these things in the name of your son, Jesus.

Speaker 1 00:18:25

Amen.

Speaker 1 00:18:27

Thank you for joining us today on Bible Bites as we explore devotion to Jesus, lessons from Mary Magdalene's life.

Speaker 1 00:18:34

Mary's unwavering presence at the cross reminds us that true discipleship is often quiet, costly, and unseen.

Speaker 1 00:18:41

Faithfulness is measured not by comfort or recognition.

Speaker 1 00:18:45

But by our willingness to remain near Christ when circumstances are difficult, hope feels distant, and understanding is limited

Speaker 1 00:18:53

Her life shows us that steadfast devotion prepares us for God's purposes and positions us to bear witness to his work in ways we may not yet fully see.

Speaker 1 00:19:06

But the story of faithful followers does not end with Mary.

Speaker 1 00:19:10

In our next episode, Ministry Partnership, Priscilla and Aquila's work.

Speaker 1 00:19:15

We're going to turn to Acts chapter 18, verses 1 through 3, to examine how God uses the partnership of devoted individuals to advance his kingdom.

Speaker 1 00:19:25
