Today’s topic is about imposter syndrome. A lot of times imposter syndrome is spoken about in the context of starting something brand new, but the truth is, it can come up at any point in your journey, whether you’ve been at it for 3, 5, or 10 years.

If you are someone who prioritizes upleveling and evolving in your endeavors, you’re going to run into it before you hit that next level or phase.

One of the reasons why the delulu or lucky girl movement have taken off and proven to work is because this is one of the easiest ways to elliviate imposter syndrome. You’re basically changing your mindset to being one where you are already are already succeeding and that you already belong.

This mindset shift is one of the quickest ways to shift out of feeling like an imposter whether it comes to being nervous about asking for a higher rate for a brand campaign or increasing the amount of times you’re posting.

According to Clara Josa, author of Ditching Imposter Syndrome, there are 4 p’s of imposter syndrome: perfectionism, paralysis, people-pleasing, and procrastination.

Based on those 4 p’s alone, if you’re 5-10 years into this industry, it can still be totally normal to experience imposter syndrome.

Let’s breakdown how you can address each of the 4 p’s of procrastination.

When it comes to perfectionism, this is one that I personally experience. I’m not going to lie, there have been many times when I make my rate lower than it should be for a brand Collab because I fear that if the content I create isn’t perfect, then I’ll be letting them down and that a lower rate somehow gives me the buffer to not produce the most perfect reel in the world.

Don’t follow my lead there.

Instead, what I have to remind myself is to have grace and focus on the meaning of what I’m creating and trusting that the intent matters more than the most perfect execution. You also have to know yourself, if you know you’re someone who doesn’t slack and your bare minimum is already performing higher than the average person, this is where you lean into trusting yourself and believing in your skillset.

Paralysis: this one is of course about taking action. Let’s say you’ve been day dreaming of a new series to post on TikTok, but it’s a little different than the usual format of what you post. Before you know it, months go by and you’ve been day dreaming this now for so many months that if you keep at it, even if one day you do decide to go for it, perfectionism is going to stop you because now you’ve made it out to be such a big deal that has to go exactly as you envisioned. The best case scenario is when you have this idea and you know you believe in it, to rip off the bandaid and trust that you’ll get closer to the ideal outcome by giving it a go and making tweeks along the way rather than being paralyzed in action and perfectionism. It all really builds on each other doesn’t it?

People pleasing is one of the most common forms of imposter syndrome when it comes to the influencer space. It can show in different ways but the most common are not wanting to post anything that could be polarizing to your audience and therefore you’re not fully expressing yourself or that you’re afraid that if you negotiate a brand deal then they won’t want to work with you.

When it comes to people pleasing it comes down to being really clear with yourself about who you want your audience to be and the type of respect in brand relationships you cultivate. It’s ok to block people and it’s ok to say no to brand deals. The more boundaries you have in place the more space you will have to show up as your authentic self.

Finally, we have procrastination. This has some overlap with paralysis but is more about your day to day actions vs overall commitment to something. The more you don’t think you belong in doing something, the more you’re going to use these thoughts to distract you from actually taking action. My biggest actionable advice for this is to do write down what you need to do that day, set an alarm for when it’s going to get done, put your delulu/lucky girl syndomre hat on, set a timer and get going. For the length of the timer, keep up that lucky girl mindset.
