[00:00:00] Eric Goranson: It's around the house when it comes to remodeling and renovating your home. There is a,
[00:00:23] Eric Goranson: this is around the house. Welcome to the Round the House Show. This is where we help you get the most outta your home through information and education. Happy, midweek, special every. Buddy. Well, I wanted to talk about a couple things here. First, I wanted to talk and help educate the East Coast people about what the West Coast is dealing with on wildfires.
[00:00:47] Eric Goranson: So here's what we've been, we've been battling, you know, over the years, in July, August, out in the West coast. We deal with smoke all the time. And I know out on the East coast you typically don't get that smoke. Now a lot of you in [00:01:00] Pennsylvania and New York and all out across the Northeast are getting a lot of wildfire smokes.
[00:01:06] Eric Goranson: So here's what you should do around your home to really make sure that you're getting as much smoke. Out of your, out of the air and what you can do to reduce your risk of issues. Now, first off, inside your house, if you have a newer house where you have an energy recovery ventilator, this is about the time that I would make sure to probably turn it off when you see active wildfire smoke outside.
[00:01:32] Eric Goranson: If it's hazy, I would turn that off for a few days, set an alarm to turn it back on when the weather says it's gonna be good. But that RV's got a chance of bringing in. More smoke than fresh air. So that's one thing to take a look at. If you've got some of the brand new models that'll, that'll, that are checking out the air quality outside and turning it off, then it's doing it automatically.
[00:01:55] Eric Goranson: But 99% of the homes that have an E R V or an energy recovery ventilator [00:02:00] is not doing that. Two, this is a great time to make sure that you've got no windows open, that you've got all those things going on. Make sure that your house is sealed up just like it would be in wintertime. Three, make sure you're not running your bath fans too long.
[00:02:17] Eric Goranson: Now I want you to run them 20 minutes after a shower, but anytime that you turn on a fan inside the house, it's exhausting outside that is going to be bringing that air from the outside. So it's gonna be finding all those little leaks and things inside your house. And so that's a key right there. Now when you go outside, I would be running an N 99 or an N 95 mask, a cloth mask.
[00:02:41] Eric Goranson: Or a, um, you know, your typical medical mass that they'd give you at the doctor's office during covid, they don't work, so you're just wasting your time. The PM 2.5, which is that tiny particulate matter that's floating around with the smoke, is kind of dangerous and, and it, and it's small enough that [00:03:00] that will end up in your bloodstream.
[00:03:04] Eric Goranson: So it's one of those things that you've gotta be careful with. And if you've got health concerns or you have lung or heart issues, I would not be out in this smoke. So maybe, uh, any of you with those kind of health issues, time to stay inside. If you've got an air purifier or something inside your house, run it.
[00:03:23] Eric Goranson: Make sure that you're running your, um, You are, uh, checking that air filter, my air filter in my house during fire season that could last me six months, might only last me weeks. So check that air filter and change it often. Especially if you're getting up into the, uh, more efficient filters that will be grabbing that particulate matter.
[00:03:47] Eric Goranson: So make sure that you're, uh, changing that filter regularly. This is the time that, uh, I would go check it probably once a week to see how it's going. I mean, if you look at the air quality in cities right now, and [00:04:00] this is pretty amazing. Uh, I was just looking at it here this morning, across the northeast.
[00:04:07] Eric Goranson: Niles, New York, 351. That is some of the worst air quality in the world right now and that's considered hazardous. My brother in Harrisburg, pa, very unhealthy at 2 78. Uh, Eastern Lake, Ontario, New York, they were pretty high up there as well. And so that's a 2 22 Delaware up in the two nineteens, very unhealthy.
[00:04:32] Eric Goranson: So just be very careful with your air quality in those areas. And now West Coast, the same rules apply when we get into fire season for us, it's going to hit early. We're gonna really see our fire season out here in the west, uh, in the northwest hit early because we haven't had rain for 22 days. So instead of hitting in in July and August, I think we're gonna hit see it hit in June and July, which could make for a very hard fire season unless we get some moisture back when, [00:05:00] uh, we got the rain.
[00:05:01] Eric Goranson: Uh, keeps things. Going good, but we're getting into that part. With the heat and stuff, it's gonna be a problem here cuz California seems to be getting our rain, but uh, for the next few days up in. New York and, and actually all of the northeast, I mean, you're even getting down into Virginia. Uh, you know it's gonna start creeping down into North Carolina.
[00:05:23] Eric Goranson: So be careful guys out there, the whole East coast is gonna get some of the smoke. Just be very careful and wear those masks because you'll notice how fast too dirty a mask up. This stuff is not good for you. All that carbon and stuff that's in there, uh, is not good. And uh, whatever else it's been burning and whatever else, pollution that is getting stuck in that as well.
[00:05:44] Eric Goranson: So take some good measures. Um, if you've got a leaky door, you know, maybe that's underneath the leak, uh, under the floor, if you've got a vinyl floor or tile by the door, maybe it's put a damp towel there. Some of those things like that. But just be very careful and, uh, watch your air [00:06:00] quality in your area.
[00:06:02] Eric Goranson: That's a good trick to be doing that. Make sure that you're good and, uh, just be careful breathing. If you've got kids sporting events outside this week, I would cancel them. Uh, if you're up in that 200 s that is not healthy for the kids. Uh, and if you have asthma or something like that, make sure that you're, you've got enough, your inhalers and stuff like that to make through, cuz you're gonna need that help.
[00:06:25] Eric Goranson: Now on our re recall list this week, we have, uh, Chevron North America, who makes ego power cordless, br brushless. Hedge trimmers have a recall. The rear switch trigger can fail to rebound after being pressed, which can cause the unit to activate unexpectedly posing a laceration hazard. So stop using it and call.
[00:06:45] Eric Goranson: Them for a free trigger switch. So there's about 85,000 of those ego brushless, head trimmers that are on recall. So make sure you get yours checked out if you have one of those. Now this week here, I just wanted to talk [00:07:00] about a couple things. We got a great show coming up this weekend, which I'll. Show you tomorrow on Thursday or Friday this week, depending on the schedule.
[00:07:07] Eric Goranson: Uh, we've got some great stuff. If you want to, uh, we'd love to have you a part of the around the House Insider. Uh, you'll be able to catch the podcast early, couple days early, as well as some exclusive content that we'll be coming up with soon. And, uh, for just $4 a month, you can have that and access into the deep back catalog.
[00:07:26] Eric Goranson: So if you want us to check out some of our old interviews and things like that, Make sure you check that as well as if you wanna see some of our new YouTube videos, we've got some great DIY videos, interviews, and some Maiden in America stuff. Head over to uh, YouTube and then just go at Fox 12. And then, uh, Fox 12 Oregon.
[00:07:45] Eric Goranson: So if you at Fox 12 Oregon, you can find us over there. Just look for the around the house playlist. And we've, uh, got about 80 plus videos in there for you to take a look at. Lots of great stuff, including, uh, I built a patio cover that is really cool. [00:08:00] That turned out nice as well as we talked to, uh, did a tour of Pendleton woolen mills.
[00:08:05] Eric Goranson: So you can see how, uh, their famous plaid fabric is made and, uh, all the way from the sheep all the way out. And so much more over there. We got a great show lined up of course this weekend as well. If you are catching the show live in Portland, it will be, uh, delayed by two hours. It'll be airing this Saturday at noon instead of 10:00 AM because we have the Grand Floral Parade for the Rose Festival.
[00:08:29] Eric Goranson: So as soon as the parade concludes, you'll be able to watch around the House Northwest right then. All right, everybody, have a great rest of the week. Enjoy yourself out there. Stay safe. Anybody dealing with that fire smoke out there. It's no joke. It will not make you feel well. And, uh, breathe easy out there.
[00:08:46] Eric Goranson: Uh, hopefully that weather will turn this weekend and you guys will be good to go. Thanks for tuning in to around the house. We'll see you on Saturday.[00:09:00]
