Hey everybody. Welcome back to another edition of the Daily Bible Podcast. What's up folks? Happy Mother's Day. To all the moms listening, we are that's right. So thankful for you. Y'all play such an important role in our lives, in the lives of the kids, in our church, in the lives of whatever children that you have. We're grateful for you moms out there. It's hard work. I my wife will sometimes look at me and be like I don't want your job. And I look back at her and I'm like I don't really want your job either. That kinda works out nicely though. It does. God, it's like complimentary roles. Yeah. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah, no we're thankful for you moms out there and we actually have a gift for you today at church. Yeah. We want to honor you towards that end. And we thought of today's sermon title. As we thought about you restored God's perfect plan for imperfect people. Yes, pastor PJ named it with you in mind. So we hope you come and hear about how God can use, even you. I think it'll be an encouraging message despite the title. Yeah. Yeah, that is funny. I didn't, I did not consider that. Oh, sure. That's okay. It's okay. Yeah, no I'm not trying to, a little playful ribbing. I don't want to anger all the moms in the church. That's not on my to-do list, that's for sure. Hey we had, speaking of Mother's Day, it always falls this way, but we had spring tea, our lady spring tea yesterday on Saturday. And your wife spoke, shared her testimony, Shea Azuma spoke and gave her testimony. Wow. And my wife spoke on Fannie Crosby. And her life story and how God's grace was so instrumental in in her life beyond the fact that she was just a blind hymn writer, which is most of what I knew about her. But she was pretty powerful. Any relation to Bing Crosby? Nope. I don't different people. I can't say that for sure, but, certainly a different time. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, but I heard good things. I heard that the testimonies went really well. I think our ladies showed up and showed out and just always a good, fun event for them to do that. So well done ladies. We're excited for y'all that you guys have that time, and hopefully it continues to bear fruit in the coming days. Yep. Speaking of coming days. Hey, we've been saying, Hey man, you only have, in fact I saw all of your emails. They hit my inbox this week. Saying you only have two hours. Last I spammed people, man. I was just un unashamed, ding. Like 24. That show with Jack Bauer. Have you ever watch that? I did. I did watch that. Yeah. And so it's that I countdown clock. Yeah. That's going on there. Good. I was waiting for that. But the good news is you actually still have more time then. I don't know if I'm gonna promote it. We're gonna announce it tomorrow or today? Today at church. We're gonna announce it today at church. And ask the men one more time. Hey we'd love to have you there. Yeah. And when we would, we think this is gonna be well worth your time. But no more. No more emails. I'm just gonna leave it open and if people wanna register, that would be super good. Yeah, that'd be awesome. And they can do that online@compasstx.org. That's right. Under ministries. You can go to Men or right there on the homepage. No package could just search it and I bet it'll come up. Compass to Ntx. Men's Retreat. Just, or just men's retreat? I'm gonna try right now. You're gonna Real time men's Google Men's Retreat. Not Google. I'm going to search Men's Retreat. Oh, on our website? Yeah, on our website. And the first thing that pops up. Is session two from Kelly Atterbury, a message from the series at Women's Retreat. So don't do that. Don't search men's retreat on our don't go there. One would wonder why it does not work. That seems like a pretty obvious, if I type in men's retreat, you would think it would bring up, it would come with men's retreat, a men's retreat. Yeah. Hey, Danny Mayer question. Yeah, we were gonna have to contact our web administrator here, right? Who? We don't know his name, but his initials are Danny Mayer. Yeah. Yeah. So if you guys ever have any issues with our website. No, we're thankful for Danny. He does a good job aside from this snafu there, but I don't, who knows? Yeah. I don't know. Okay. Kelly's not speaking at this men's retreat, though. Kelly Atterbury is a great speaker. Gifted and certainly capable, but she will not be speaking at our men's retreat. Capable, not qualified. Yeah. Not qualified for this event. This is for men and ideally you have a men. Teaching. Exactly. In our case, we have three men that are teaching myself, yourself, and Mark. So Mark Self, it's not Yeah. Mark Self. It's not even gonna be like, oh, I get to hear the same guy over and over again. It's just oh, you're gonna get variety. Yeah. Variety is a spice of life, as some people say it is. So it'd be great for you to sit under the teaching of all three of us, and I hear it's Trinity to be diverse, so That's right. We've got a Viking in Mark who's speaking. You've got me. I'm a German and you've got you. I've got me. Yeah. Yeah. It's funny 'cause when we talk about diversity, we usually don't mean diverse white people, right? We mean diverse other people. So I, I don't know a reverse Oreo we got going on here. I don't think I'd like that. That wouldn't be good. No, it's gonna be an awesome retreat. The theme is integrity and we're talking about just super important topics and subjects that are gonna hopefully be very readily. Applicable to your life. So we want you there pr if a guy's out there and is Hey I think I can only make it on Saturday. Do we still want him there? Yeah. And it would be worth your time. We're gonna have two sessions on Friday, two sessions on Saturday, so you can get there at the beginning of the day on Saturday. That'd still be a great use of your time. Yeah, and I think well worth it just because you'll get to be around the guys. I think one of the most important parts of a retreat is being with the men. You get to develop friendships and to be with people and to connect with them in a different way than you otherwise would. Yeah. Yeah. We're gonna have free time activities on Saturday. I think we're doing some hiking, some soccer playing. Yeah. Lots of options. Board game playing and assuming the weather holds out and it looks like it's gonna be better this year. Last year we got rained in. Yeah. This year we actually might stand a chance to have some nice weather. I do see some rain clouds this Friday. But we'll see. Maybe that won't. Materialize. Maybe not. Maybe not. Yeah. So then you still have time to sign up all that to say as you're listening to this on Sunday, you still got time to sign up, please do that. If you're planning on going, please don't be like, ah, I'll just wait and call on Wednesday and see if I can shoehorn my way in there. Yeah they want a count. So that was the hard line for us is that the camp wanted to count. They always do, they want a head count to provide for food and all the things. And that's the only stricture that we're working with. So if you are interested, please sign up and if you're not interested. Come talk to us and we'll still encourage you to sign up. Yeah. We wanna convince you how good this is gonna be and how worth it. You'll find it. Hey, I'm just took a sip of a cup of coffee that I'm drinking. 1418 brand coffee that reminded me of one of our church attendees highly committed participant Abe Kim a brought the coffee to us and said, Hey, we just, we love you guys. Just wanted to say thank you and so here's some coffee. That was awesome. Oh, and so here I am. I'm drinking my coffee about a week and a half later after that probably. Wow. And I'm thinking about the Kim family. Wow. Good job. Kims also, they're done with school. This homeschool thing is crazy. Like I found out the other day, I'm like they're just done. They've been done with school for three months. They're like done. They're just three months ago. They worked really hard and then they party really hard during the summer. That's the way to do it, man. Yeah. So anyways let's jump into our text. Today we've got second Samuel 10 and one Chronicles 19, and Psalm 20. We were talking before we hit record, that this is the, this is the last, Hey, look at David before we're like, oh man, look at David. Yeah. So enjoy today because tomorrow takes a bit of a turn. Actually not a bit of a term, quite a sharp term. An unfortunate one. Yeah. Chapter 10, you've got this somewhat humorous scene, although it wasn't at the time but it's humorous to us today to think about it. You've got the death of the king, of the Ammonites and David is trying to be a good dude and wants to express his condolences. And so he sends a, an envoy to. Bring some gifts to say, Hey, I'm sorry that you lost your dad, but there's some wicked counselors here and I don't know if this has ever struck you, but this reminded me of what's gonna happen actually after Solomon with Ray Bo and Ome when Rebo surrounds himself with some pretty stupid counselors who give him bad advice. And so here you've got the same thing with a pagan king. Some counselors that give him bad advice, say, David's just trying to spy out your land. And they humiliate this Envoy. And they shave off half the beard and cut off their clothes at the waistline. And this is not a good look for them. And so David finds out about it and he tells them to, Hey, you stay at Jericho until everything has grown back and you can get some new clothes and then you can come back and not be ashamed or embarrassed. That stood out to me because Jericho. Is a city that was destroyed by Joshua and there was a curse put upon it. Anyone who would rebuild it. If you go to Israel today, there's still a Jericho. You can go visit the city of Jericho. It's next to, it's adjacent to the ancient city of Jericho. So probably what this is it's. Another version of Jericho part two that was built adjacent to the original city that was destroyed during the conquest of the land. So I don't think this is the same Jericho that was rebuilt. I think this is another city named for the city that was destroyed, built in close proximity to where the city I. Itself had been destroyed. And that's where David says, Hey, hang out there and stop there. Rest of the chapter is Victory for David. David bows up against the Ammonites. The Ammonites, get the Syrians. And then, and this is the beginning of an interesting conflict between Israel and Syria. That's gonna play out. I. Into the future. But but the Syrians show up here to try to help the Ammonites, that doesn't go well. Then the Syrians try to say we could have taken you in by ourselves. And that doesn't go well because God is with David still at this point in his life, and David is winning these battles and these victories. Yeah. This is the high point or the last high point of David's career as a military man, as a leader. But it's one we're celebrating. This is, again, to the. Point to the fact that God's the one who's controlling this David's victory and success is not because of his military prowess, although he's certainly got something. It is the fact that God is with him. He's the one who's doing good through him and David know knows this. And I think David never forgets this honestly, even though he's got some major flaws that we're gonna have to work through. I think David truly is a humble man who recognizes that God's the one who's working through him. There is a textual variant between these two chapters. And I guess lemme just 0.1 out to you right now before we get over to First Chronicles and is in verse 18, Syrians fled before Israel, David killed of the Syrians, the men of 700 chariots. Okay, keep that part in mind. We'll address that when we get to First Chronicles. Yeah. One thing that I love here we talked about David, the military strategist. I think we see Joe Abs military prowess here in this situation because they're outnumbered. It looks like Israel should lose this battle, and Joe Ebbs says, Hey, let's split our forces, and I just love the trust in God, but yet I'm going to, I'm gonna do my part in this. Iss not a let go and let God, Joe doesn't just say, okay, God, we're just gonna rush headlong into the enemy and trust you in this. He says, no, we're gonna plan and strategize. And then I love what he says to his brother there. He says, look if God's behind us, we'll have victory. If not, we're done either way. So here's what we're gonna do and we'll see what God does. And it's gonna be good because God's the one that's gonna do this. And so Joe Abs commendable in this, as is his brother Abha in this this situation here. But yeah, I've always loved the. The marriage of God's trusting God's sovereignty, and yet saying, we've gotta make sure we're doing our part here on the ground as we, we draw up for battle against these guys. Yeah. It's not a verse. I know people often cited as a verse, it's the sense Aris is saying God helps those who help themselves. I think Benjamin Franklin is the one who popularized that idea. It's not true in the sense that it's not biblical. There's not a verse that you could point to that says that there is a hint of truth in it, though. In that God does use means to accomplish his divine purposes, and those means are often the things that people look down upon. Prayer, submission, surrender, but it's also the strategic practical planning that we do every day. So keeping a budget. Is a really practical way to strategize where God wants to use your finances. Keeping a calendar is a strategic and practical way for how God wants you to spend your life. You get to choose how you're gonna do that. Now, God's gonna orchestrate your life to his purposes and his desires, but it's not without your active voluntary even. I'll use that word, even though I know we, we were, we're all thinking the same thing because God is sovereign. It's your voluntary. Agency that God utilizes to accomplish his purposes. So don't negate that it's not this or that. It's this and that. Yeah. Yeah. Alright, let's get over to the parallel text then in one Chronicles 19. And let's deal with this textual variant here. Where do you want us to go? Verse 18 it's actually verse 18 in both texts. So first. It's Chronicles 19, two Samuel 10. They're both of verse 18. So take a look here. Syrians fled before Israel. David killed the Syrians, the men of, and here we go, 7,000 chariots. 40,000 foot soldiers and he put to death choppa Chop Show. Show that guy. Yeah. But anyway, 7,000 verses 700. This one's a little easier to understand and you probably would be able to say, okay, I could see what happened there. So obviously you have a difference in number one, 7,001 700. And I think, I forget now. This has been a couple days since I looked at this, but I think that the large number of commentators will agree with the 7,000 number and not 700 either are a possibility though. And this is one of those scribal issues where it's, okay, was it three zeros? Was it four zeros? This is one of those areas where it's not gonna make or break our faith, but it is there. And these are the kind of things that you need to be aware of. They're not meant to disagree with each other in that they're not. It's not, they're not both true. Certainly one of them is true because they're both talking about the same thing. And a good Bible exe will say, okay, which one do I believe? And this is where you have to go into your due diligence and looking at your various resources to say which one makes the most sense. Now the NET Bible will record 700. Other Bibles will record 7,000 as the ESV does. There's different approaches to this, but again, nothing to be a afraid of. Yeah. EE even the language there, there's 40,000 horsemen in one and 40,000 foot soldiers in the other one or ground troops in the other one. And so that's another example there of some things that can get. Confused or lost in translation as well. Alright. Psalm chapter 20. Anything else on the parallel there that you wanted to call out there? No, just that. Okay. Psalm chapter 20 is another Psalm of David and we're not sure here of the timing, but certainly fits the tone of a victory psalm and so it. Could be that this was written after these victories or maybe after the victories that we read about in Second Samuel eight. But this would've been sung after winning battles like those here. And and this is a psalm of well wishing upon the people that culminates in the expression of great trust in God. In verse seven, and we alluded to this verse the other day, but here it is, some trust in chariots, some in horses. But we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Yeah, so it, you can see why it connects here because you've got these massive numbers of chariots and horsemen that David and his crew and Joe Ab and Abishai were up against, and yet God gave them the victory. And so it fits here that maybe David wrote this psalm reflecting on that saying, man, they trusted in their army, they trusted in their chariots and their horsemen. Even think back to the Exodus and Pharaoh and his armies pursuing the Israelites. Look, we're gonna trust in the name of the Lord our God. We're gonna trust that he is able to do this. And when we see the name of the Lord our God what we're talking about there is his reputation, his character, who he has revealed himself to be. We're trusting in him, his person. That's what's referenced there by the name. And so it's not that they're carrying a banner with the name Yahweh, and they're looking at the banner itself or the word itself going. That's what we're trusting. And it's meant to stand in for the whole person there of God himself. And that's where our trust needs to be. And it needs to be there for us too. Yeah, we've got a lot going on right now. I just, we've been talking about Epic City, right? Yes. Yeah. That, that was in the news again recently because the DOJ the Federal Department of Justice is now doing an investigation, launching an investigation into Epic City. I saw that, I found in my heart, my initial response was, oh, good. This is a good thing. I wanted that. And yet I caught myself. I'm like, wait a minute. My, my trust is not in the DOJ under this administration coming in and protecting us from the islamification of North Texas, right? My trust is in a sovereign God. Now, if he uses those means, means great, praise God. It's not that we should not want that to happen. I think it's a good thing and I want it to be shut down. I don't want the islamification of our area at all. It's a false gospel. It's gonna lead more and more people to hell, but. Man, where's our trust in in, whether it's that or in your health diagnosis or you've got marital strife at home. It, where is your trust? We're gonna be like, Joe, Adam, we're gonna, we're going do the work. We're gonna think about how we need to move forward and be smart about that, and apply the wisdom that we believe that we have. But where's our trust? In the end of the day? We have to trust in him. That's why things like accountability so good, but they're lousy saviors. Our trust can't be in accountability to overcome sin. Our trust has to be in our relationship with Christ. Our trust has to be in the Lord to help us in that. So a lot of people are gonna I think, naturally wonder then, okay. If I'm trusting the Lord, then where is the line? For instance if I have a strange growth in some part of my body, should I go to the doctor or should I trust the Lord? If I live in an area where I think, man, it would be prudent for me to have an alarm system. Should I get the alarm system and spend the extra $35 a month or whatever it is, or should I trust the Lord? Should I get additional insurance for my car with a very low deductible, or should I trust the Lord? I think a lot of these things people are gonna wonder what practically then do I do? Should I throw caution to the wind? Should I buy the insurance? Should I, should I buy a gun? If the criminal is trying to open my door, do I trust the Lord and pray, or do I call the cops? Help answer some of those questions. Yeah, I think discernment is gonna be super helpful in a lot of this because it's subjective in so much of this, if security becomes an idol, then there is a degree to which we can go too far and we're no longer trusting the Lord. We are trusting our Glock. We are trusting our security system. We are trusting the neighborhood that we moved into. And if you're up late at night and you're not able to sleep because you're afraid that somebody's gonna break in your home, you're. Not trusting the Lord. Now, is it wrong to have locks on our doors and things? No, absolutely not. You look at these cities, they were fortified. The Israelis dwelled with gates and they shut the gates and they locked the gates. And so as, as much as they said with David in Psalm 20, we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They're also gonna say, we're gonna dwell inside walled cities with gates, and we're gonna have centuries on the post to watch out. Even just wisdom in it. Joab had to pursue some sort of military training and so he did that. He went out and got the military training necessary to be able to command the armies and to know, okay, I'm outnumbered. What do I need to do? I need to cover my front side and my backside. So we're gonna split because this is a military process and thing that works and it's proven to work in the past, so we're gonna do this. And so even there education, you can see that's helpful for us to go and pursue that. That's not undermining our confidence in the Lord. It just comes back to me, and this is why I say it's subjective. We have to examine our hearts to say, God, am gonna go so far, but I'm not gonna go beyond the degree to where I'm saying I don't trust you enough. At this point, we have to get to a place where we say, okay, and now I'm gonna trust you. And that's gonna be different for every person. By and large if you've got 40 locks on your door and three alarm systems, okay we might have a problem there. We might have a, an issue of you're not trusting the Lord with your family's wellbeing and safety. If you're paying an exorbitant amount of money for car insurance and that's impacting your ability to be generous towards other people and to give to the church, I would say. Okay. I think we've got an issue there too. But it's, I, you can't make an objective, hard and fast rule across the board. Yeah. I think we have to find the way to go to the doctor and yet not trust the doctor or trusting the Lord to get the car insurance that we need and to trust the Lord and to to have the gun, if that's what your family believes you should do, and yet still trust the Lord. I think of Psalm 1 27. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. So God has to be behind your activity. And then just as we said here it was noble of Joe Ab and Abishai to do the things that they did to strategize, and God used that. God bless that. The same thing is true for us when it comes to living our everyday lives. We have to make decisions that we say. We're doing this as an act of trust and not in defiance of that trust, and that's often hard. That means you have to be paying attention to your heart in the first place when you're spending money in investing all your time, energy, and resources into something to protect your family or to to protect your nest egg. You have to always diagnose your heart. What am I doing this for? What's the motivation behind it? Christian has to learn how to operate in this world and do the practical thing, strategize, spend, save, give. And yet still at the end of the day, say, I'm trusting in the Lord. Even as I do these things, there are evidence of my trust and not evidence of its absence. Yeah, let's pray and then we'll be done with this episode. God, help us to find that balance, to walk that line. It's so hard and and there's plenty of reasons for us to fear whether it's health related reasons or our security, our safety, what's going on with the the population of our area here in North Texas and who's moving in and what's going on. It's so many reasons we can find to. To feel like we need to take things into our own hands, and yet we make lousy saviors. We don't have armies. We don't have chariots to trust in, but we have security systems and we have politicians, and we have, our doctors or our health and wellbeing specialists. Lord, we need to ultimately have our trust anchored to you because even if we have the best of all of that, if you desire to call us home, you're gonna, you're gonna bring us home. And so gotta increase our faith in you. Help us to. To rest in you and not to be a fearful people to be wise, but and to take advantage of the resources that you've given to us to protect our families and our homes and everything else. But also at the end of the day to say, look, Lord, your will be done as Joab does here. And what a great example that is. I thank you for that example in the text and just pray that we would live it out as your followers even today. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Happy Mother's Day, moms Keep your Bibles. Tune in again tomorrow for another Daily Bible podcast. We'll see you then. Bye.
