Welcome to the Atlanta Tennis Podcast.

Speaker:

Every episode is titled,

Speaker:

It Starts with Tennis and Goes From There.

Speaker:

We talk with coaches, club managers,

Speaker:

industry business professionals,

Speaker:

technology experts, and anyone else we find interesting.

Speaker:

We wanna have a conversation as long as it starts with tennis.

Speaker:

(upbeat music)

Speaker:

Hey, hey, this is Shaun with the Atlanta Tennis Podcast,

Speaker:

And with that, let's get into our recent conversation

Speaker:

with Alex from Tennis Esports,

Speaker:

a virtual reality software.

Speaker:

Alex is offering free keys to our listeners

Speaker:

if you wanna try it out.

Speaker:

Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Speaker:

(upbeat music)

Speaker:

Alex, good to see you again, good to hear you again,

Speaker:

and we are excited to hear about Tennis Esports.

Speaker:

You were one of the first we talked to in the VR world,

Speaker:

and it's now been maybe a year, a little over a year.

Speaker:

I didn't do my own due diligence on our own last conversation,

Speaker:

but what has happened in a year?

Speaker:

What do you guys have done a lot?

Speaker:

So catch us up and let us know what's been going on.

Speaker:

- Yeah, thanks so much, really happy to be here again.

Speaker:

And it's awesome to give you an update this update again,

Speaker:

because a lot has happened this year.

Speaker:

It's surprising that even talking Apple

Speaker:

hadn't released a lot since last year there,

Speaker:

VR headsets, it's also surprising

Speaker:

that we're not doing this podcast in VR as well.

Speaker:

So next year, we should do that.

Speaker:

- That sounds like fun.

Speaker:

- The video bit of a mix, but no.

Speaker:

So since we last spoke, we probably didn't even launch

Speaker:

onto the story yet.

Speaker:

So just like a virtual tennis application

Speaker:

or virtual applications, just like your mobile,

Speaker:

you download it on your Oculus Store or your app store.

Speaker:

So we launched in June last year,

Speaker:

and since then we have probably grown

Speaker:

around 50% months or months for since then.

Speaker:

So it's been growing quite well.

Speaker:

We have had our first kind of competition

Speaker:

in an Olympic space.

Speaker:

So we went to Mongolia recently,

Speaker:

where we just hosted the East Asian Youth Olympic Games.

Speaker:

And we had teams actually competing

Speaker:

for a gold silver and bronze medal

Speaker:

with an Olympic sanction.

Speaker:

So that was very, very cool.

Speaker:

- An Olympic sanction, what does that actually mean?

Speaker:

- Correct.

Speaker:

So I, because we're such a small startup,

Speaker:

and not very many people know about VR tennis and its rules,

Speaker:

I was the technical official umpire for this tournament.

Speaker:

And these rules were kind of drafted by our organization

Speaker:

and then drafted by a few officials

Speaker:

that we can need Olympic committee.

Speaker:

And also sanctioned by that.

Speaker:

So that's why they achieved the gold medal status

Speaker:

for virtual reality tennis.

Speaker:

- A world first. - Very cool.

Speaker:

- Yeah, so we had people like cheering

Speaker:

and saying, come on,

Speaker:

what their headsets are,

Speaker:

and it was kind of, it was well.

Speaker:

It was an interesting experience, but it's cool.

Speaker:

- Nice.

Speaker:

- Yeah, so that was one really big achievement.

Speaker:

And we aren't really getting better.

Speaker:

So yeah, we've also released,

Speaker:

we were talking about before, the tech zone,

Speaker:

which is probably more relevant to your podcast.

Speaker:

And basically, Tennessee Sports and the nutshell

Speaker:

is able to help you improve your technique

Speaker:

or learn modern technique in virtual reality.

Speaker:

So in real time, based upon AI, coaching rules and data,

Speaker:

analysis.

Speaker:

So if I do a forehand,

Speaker:

I can see it tracked by track every single frame,

Speaker:

what I should be doing, where I should be.

Speaker:

And at the same time, I can also hit my normal forehand

Speaker:

and get feedback automated by AI and simple coaching rules

Speaker:

as well.

Speaker:

So that will be a work in progress

Speaker:

as the machine learns.

Speaker:

And we get more people using it.

Speaker:

But at the moment, it is a revolutionary product

Speaker:

and we hope it can grow tennis.

Speaker:

And I think maybe take the stage,

Speaker:

maybe take two steps back and explain what VR

Speaker:

tennis is all about.

Speaker:

Maybe some new listeners.

Speaker:

Yeah, if somebody has no idea what we're talking about.

Speaker:

Correct.

Speaker:

Agreed, baby.

Speaker:

Yeah, maybe just take 10 steps back.

Speaker:

Hang on.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

VR, Tennessee Sports is a virtual reality tennis application.

Speaker:

And we have kind of two goals.

Speaker:

I'm an expert professional tennis player

Speaker:

about 300 in the world.

Speaker:

And I joined because I believe in these two things.

Speaker:

So one is kind of growing tennis participation.

Speaker:

It's the most realistic experience I've had that's not on tennis.

Speaker:

So we simulate everything from ball spins to speeds,

Speaker:

everything from competition, everything except for the impact.

Speaker:

So if I had a slicer to you over in Atlanta,

Speaker:

you will receive my slicer.

Speaker:

And it will skip through the court

Speaker:

at the appropriate sea level sea temperature every month.

Speaker:

So this is one aspect.

Speaker:

And the other aspect as I was talking about before is

Speaker:

we are merging this world with eSports.

Speaker:

So I can play matches online and meet you

Speaker:

on a real virtual court and compete

Speaker:

with real tennis points with automated scoring

Speaker:

and empires and a virtual spectator,

Speaker:

which hopefully will be real spectator soon.

Speaker:

And we are building out eSports within that.

Speaker:

So competitive virtual tennis.

Speaker:

All right, so Bobby, I can see what's going on up there.

Speaker:

Well, I was just picturing right away

Speaker:

when they were doing the Olympics.

Speaker:

Now, I know the players have to wear the goggles.

Speaker:

And I'm assuming if you want to watch the match,

Speaker:

you have to wear goggles as well.

Speaker:

No, that's a great question, not at all.

Speaker:

So it actually projects onto 2D platforms.

Speaker:

So we could watch it on our PC or on our mobile.

Speaker:

We also had commentators for this

Speaker:

and we do typically have commentators for our matches.

Speaker:

So it's just like any normal match

Speaker:

except you're commentating on a screen.

Speaker:

So you can't actually be there.

Speaker:

First, you can watch it on VR too as well.

Speaker:

So you can talk during the match and they can't hear you?

Speaker:

Yeah, you can talk as a spectator and they can't hear you.

Speaker:

We're working on kind of sending you a little emoji

Speaker:

or something like that to say, hey, good job.

Speaker:

And you'll see it in your kind of AR proof through.

Speaker:

But that's the next step.

Speaker:

But yeah, we can talk just like this in our matches as well.

Speaker:

So I won't need to shout across the port

Speaker:

or pick up any balls for that matter.

Speaker:

I'll be automatically tell boarder to the next point.

Speaker:

So that's not a cool.

Speaker:

So what would you say, since we spoke last,

Speaker:

the percentage of--

Speaker:

and I don't even know how you measure it.

Speaker:

How do we measure improvement in the technology

Speaker:

from last year at this time?

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm not sure to give a number.

Speaker:

However, I know that we're working with the technology

Speaker:

as best as we can.

Speaker:

And we're right at the forefront of it.

Speaker:

So every kind of new update, we partner with Netto.

Speaker:

So they kind of find us to be part of this.

Speaker:

Mark Zuckerberg loves tennis, which is great.

Speaker:

And so I would say that we're probably--

Speaker:

from when I started two years ago, we're double that.

Speaker:

So let's just say 50% growth rate

Speaker:

is pretty good.

Speaker:

So we're definitely really, really close

Speaker:

to make it a really smooth experience.

Speaker:

That simulates real life, yeah.

Speaker:

So to the point where, for example, one of the coolest

Speaker:

features that I really enjoy is that you don't have

Speaker:

to tell something about the ball.

Speaker:

So it makes it really easy and accessible for new players

Speaker:

to join when they're learning--

Speaker:

trust learning-- to hit a serve, for example.

Speaker:

The ball is actually floating perfectly in the air form.

Speaker:

And they can choose and pick and choose where it is.

Speaker:

So just to get used to that actual impact

Speaker:

of hitting above your head, it really, really helps

Speaker:

onboard new players as well.

Speaker:

And hopefully bring them onto the real board as well,

Speaker:

which is nothing that I want to--

Speaker:

or we want to discriminate it all.

Speaker:

In that case, what you've got is--

Speaker:

it's almost a large range of saying, OK,

Speaker:

we've got it so simplified for the gamer that may not

Speaker:

have actually ever held a real tennis ball in their hand.

Speaker:

But also, you're going to help me as my recreational players

Speaker:

are going to potentially use your system

Speaker:

to help develop their strokes, at least the swing pattern,

Speaker:

as you say, the impact isn't there.

Speaker:

And that's true on any VR system.

Speaker:

But then you also have--

Speaker:

you're able to teach a lesson as well.

Speaker:

You do that point.

Speaker:

I know I watched something recently where you can stand near me

Speaker:

and watch me play tennis and maybe coach me.

Speaker:

Is that part of the ability as well?

Speaker:

That's in the pipeline.

Speaker:

I think you've nailed it where we're kind of hoping the gamer,

Speaker:

hoping the everyday person bringing tennis

Speaker:

to where you can never typically play.

Speaker:

And this is the crux of it, right?

Speaker:

So now we can play tennis in a classroom, for example,

Speaker:

and introduce tennis to all of the class who may not necessarily

Speaker:

want to go play gym or want to even just jump on a court

Speaker:

because they're playing cattle instead or pickable instead.

Speaker:

Now this is the way for tennis to actually grow

Speaker:

and innovate in a modern fashion.

Speaker:

So bringing it to where you can't necessarily play is awesome.

Speaker:

Second, for the stroke improvements,

Speaker:

I think we've only released that for the forehand.

Speaker:

What is coming up and telling is definitely

Speaker:

the backhand side.

Speaker:

And that will come again for the serve.

Speaker:

So tennis is not quite natural, as you know,

Speaker:

all the time for everyone.

Speaker:

And so picking up those skills almost immediately

Speaker:

off the first bat really helps coaches and also helps

Speaker:

players have those little tips and techniques

Speaker:

as well to improve.

Speaker:

To bring in the actual physical coaching

Speaker:

and us being on a court for you to talk, this is possible.

Speaker:

However, I would say it's manual right now.

Speaker:

So it's funky.

Speaker:

So we could meet on a court, but it wouldn't be a direct,

Speaker:

perfect simulation of a court.

Speaker:

You're not going to have a basketball

Speaker:

so that you're going to be able to see your player.

Speaker:

But that's definitely the pipeline for coaches

Speaker:

and coaching tool for sure to do that.

Speaker:

And Bobby, I'm going to ask exactly what you're thinking,

Speaker:

which if I teach the forehand a little bit differently

Speaker:

from how Bobby teaches the forehand,

Speaker:

and then we have somebody that comes in and says,

Speaker:

well, sure, but Alex in VR told me I need to do it.

Speaker:

This way, every coach has that question.

Speaker:

You're not trying to replace the coaches.

Speaker:

You're hoping to be supplemental in a way.

Speaker:

Exactly right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So we've left the parameters and they're

Speaker:

tested by a lot of tennis coaches in general.

Speaker:

And we've left them quite wide open.

Speaker:

So what we're trying to do is teach a modern,

Speaker:

steeply, steeply forehand, have any group you like.

Speaker:

If you don't agree with that, please just

Speaker:

give me an email and let us know.

Speaker:

But it'd be very, very happy to take some feedback on that.

Speaker:

But we really, really thought about it

Speaker:

and just wanted to onboard people into tennis as best

Speaker:

as possible.

Speaker:

That's the goal with this one.

Speaker:

And it is such a revolutionary tool

Speaker:

that we wouldn't want to discriminate tennis at any point.

Speaker:

So I don't think it's a hindrance at all.

Speaker:

It's more of a fast track you into playing better

Speaker:

and having fun straight away with tennis.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All right, Bobby.

Speaker:

I'd say I'm caught up.

Speaker:

I'm sure there are 1,000 more things we can ask, right?

Speaker:

Well, that's the thing I'm just curious about fitness component.

Speaker:

Does it mean that I know my ladies turn their Apple watch

Speaker:

on as soon as they walk on the court.

Speaker:

But can you track stuff?

Speaker:

Because I see this is a great fitness aid as well.

Speaker:

100% I'm so glad you asked because I personally

Speaker:

can figure out all the trainings that are inside the game.

Speaker:

We've got over 30 modules.

Speaker:

And one of the five modules that are called cardio is meant to.

Speaker:

And they really do--

Speaker:

they get to square up the actual device, the meta VR headset,

Speaker:

tracks a calorie burn.

Speaker:

And this really gets your heart rate up there to the point

Speaker:

where some of my colleagues have not been

Speaker:

as a complete--

Speaker:

complete some of the trainings.

Speaker:

But yeah, it's a cool workout.

Speaker:

And then that's also in the pipeline too, to get people

Speaker:

moving for sure in a tennis fashion.

Speaker:

Hopefully adding some music in there as well to get a bit upbeat.

Speaker:

And then yeah, finally, I'll probably just

Speaker:

add the last thing that comes to mind

Speaker:

is you can configure your own trainings.

Speaker:

So we've released a feature recently called the Playground.

Speaker:

We released a poll of even the naming for it on LinkedIn.

Speaker:

So if you want to find us there.

Speaker:

But essentially, what you can do is kind of select your template,

Speaker:

select what stroke you want to hit,

Speaker:

and kind of select what time you see what it go for.

Speaker:

And basically, you're basically trying to find us

Speaker:

as well.

Speaker:

So that cardio tennis is definitely right there.

Speaker:

And hopefully, progress as well.

Speaker:

Good to be back.

Speaker:

The Playground.

Speaker:

That's fantastic.

Speaker:

I like that a lot.

Speaker:

All right, Alex, what do you have for our audience?

Speaker:

You mentioned before you guys got a key or two.

Speaker:

We can hand out.

Speaker:

And then how do we get in touch with you?

Speaker:

Give us the LinkedIn, the Instagrams, the facebags,

Speaker:

all your handles.

Speaker:

Give us everything.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

Yeah, so we are giving away an exclusive free case

Speaker:

to your listeners.

Speaker:

So basically, what you need to do is email me at Alex@VR-motion-learning.com.

Speaker:

I'm sure Sean will add it to the show notes as well.

Speaker:

But yes, just shoot me an email.

Speaker:

And we will definitely help you with that.

Speaker:

And we're really, really open to your feedback.

Speaker:

So find us on LinkedIn.

Speaker:

You'll see a sports tech and tennis e-sports group

Speaker:

with over--

Speaker:

I think around 20,000 people now.

Speaker:

We share all our updates there quite frequently.

Speaker:

You can join our Discord as well, Tennis eSports Server,

Speaker:

where we communicate to find matches and organize

Speaker:

our tournaments and weekly prizes for in-game players.

Speaker:

And finally, you can find--

Speaker:

on two websites, one is tennis-esports.com.

Speaker:

Just to find out more about the game.

Speaker:

And second, you can find the IVTF, the International Virtual

Speaker:

Tennis Federation.org, where all of our hopefully Olympic

Speaker:

and really official tournaments will be taking place as well.

Speaker:

I love that there are official things happening.

Speaker:

This is the official virtual reality tournament or whatever.

Speaker:

And the fact that the Olympic Committee has gotten involved

Speaker:

and give you a chance.

Speaker:

I know one of the things we're going to talk about coming up

Speaker:

in the next few months, we have our last Atlanta open coming.

Speaker:

And we're going to see if we can put together.

Speaker:

We haven't fit all the pieces together yet.

Speaker:

But see if we can put together a virtual version of that.

Speaker:

And I know Bobby doesn't actually compete in a lot of tennis.

Speaker:

But I'm thinking, he and I are going to go at it.

Speaker:

What do you think, Bobby?

Speaker:

The only thing I see missing in this,

Speaker:

you know, make my life complete is the crypto component

Speaker:

that you get prizes if you achieve certain levels.

Speaker:

Then all my drugs are satisfied.

Speaker:

I'm exercising, I'm playing tennis, and I'm getting rewarded.

Speaker:

I mean, I'm a happy addict right now.

Speaker:

I want to sound good.

Speaker:

I hate to request that.

Speaker:

So I'm noting the world down, noting the world down the world.

Speaker:

I give rewards for walking.

Speaker:

I want to reward for hitting my forehand.

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Your problems.

Speaker:

There we go.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

Alex, thank you so much.

Speaker:

We need to do this.

Speaker:

We'll find a schedule.

Speaker:

Once a year, whatever it is, anytime you've got an update,

Speaker:

find us.

Speaker:

And we will tell everybody.

Speaker:

But as Alex said, we'll put everything in the show notes

Speaker:

in the description, whether you're

Speaker:

wherever you're watching, listening, whatever you're doing.

Speaker:

We should have a link somewhere to get you in touch with her.

Speaker:

Get a free key.

Speaker:

And we will put out the email address

Speaker:

and make sure everybody knows.

Speaker:

Alex, thank you so much.

Speaker:

I appreciate it.

Speaker:

We'll see you again next time.

Speaker:

Thank you so much, guys.

Speaker:

Take care.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:
