Okay. So I have a confession. Last
Speaker:week, I lost a battle with an automated phone
Speaker:system. You know, the ones press 1 for this, 2 for
Speaker:that. I swear it took 20 minutes just to get
Speaker:where I needed to be. It got me thinking.
Speaker:Is AI out to get us? Or with
Speaker:all the buzz about this technology, could it make our
Speaker:lives easier? As a woman over 50,
Speaker:I want answers. So today,
Speaker:we're venturing into a topic that's both fascinating
Speaker:and a bit mystifying for many of us. It's
Speaker:artificial intelligence or AI. Is
Speaker:it our friend or foe? And how
Speaker:it's changing things for women like us.
Speaker:Hello, beautiful ladies. Welcome back to another episode of 5
Speaker:to Thrive. I'm your host, Valerie Hatcher. Our
Speaker:mission is to provide empowering tips for women over 50 to
Speaker:help us navigate this vibrant stage in life with grace,
Speaker:style, and a whole lot of fun. Each week, I
Speaker:bring you 5 practical and engaging tips on a specific
Speaker:topic. I hope you find them relevant and relatable,
Speaker:and we'll come back for more. Ready for today's episode?
Speaker:Then let's go.
Speaker:So let's start with the basics. Artificial
Speaker:intelligence in its simplest form, it's about
Speaker:creating computers that can perform tasks, which
Speaker:typically require human intelligence. This includes
Speaker:things like understanding natural language,
Speaker:recognizing patterns, making decisions, and
Speaker:even creating art. It's not about creating
Speaker:machines that think exactly like humans, but
Speaker:about solving problems in a way that's inspired
Speaker:by human thought processes.
Speaker:AI has been around for a while. Actually, the
Speaker:concept dates back to the mid 20th century,
Speaker:but it's only in the recent years that technology
Speaker:has caught up with the vision. Thanks to advances in
Speaker:computing power and data collection. Now
Speaker:I know what you might be thinking. AI,
Speaker:isn't that for techies or the younger crowd?
Speaker:But stay with me. 1st, let's
Speaker:get rid of that scary sci fi image of robots
Speaker:taking over. Yes. AI is powerful,
Speaker:but it's essentially smart software.
Speaker:It learns from data, but it doesn't have a mind of its
Speaker:own. It's not about to walk out of your computer and
Speaker:steal your job. It's becoming a part
Speaker:of our everyday lives. Here's the thing.
Speaker:You're probably using bits of a AI every
Speaker:day and don't even realize it. Ever wonder
Speaker:how your email magically filters out
Speaker:spam or how Netflix knows
Speaker:that you'll love that cheesy show. It's
Speaker:AI. Your photos getting sorted by faces
Speaker:or maps finding the fastest route
Speaker:even with traffic. AI again,
Speaker:you don't have to be a tech genius to benefit. It's for
Speaker:everyone. Think of it like a supercharged
Speaker:assistant, always learning in the background.
Speaker:Honestly, AI has some serious potential to make
Speaker:our lives better. Now let's get practical for a
Speaker:minute. You want those old family recipes
Speaker:to be readable again? Well, snap a photo,
Speaker:and AI can trans transcribe the faded handwriting.
Speaker:Or maybe you're feeling overwhelmed by errands.
Speaker:AI can suggest the best time to hit the grocery store to
Speaker:avoid crowds. Even in the kitchen, it
Speaker:can help. If you are maybe struggling for dinner
Speaker:ideas based on what's in your fridge, AI can help with
Speaker:that. Maybe you want workouts tailored to
Speaker:you without a pricey trainer. AI
Speaker:can do it. So let's be honest. Some of
Speaker:us could use a digital assistant, and AI can
Speaker:fill that role. So here's a fun story.
Speaker:I got this smart vacuum, you know, one of those little robots
Speaker:that scoots across your house cleaning floors. Now I haven't
Speaker:named it yet, but I thought about naming it Rosie
Speaker:after the robot maid in The Jetsons. You remember The
Speaker:Jetsons. Right? But it's a perfect example
Speaker:of a practical, everyday use of AI,
Speaker:saving time and effort on a chore that none
Speaker:of us love doing. Well, I certainly don't.
Speaker:I know you're saying, okay, Valerie. That's
Speaker:great. But how can I use AI?
Speaker:Okay. Let me share a few ways that I use it.
Speaker:So think about organization. There are
Speaker:AI based apps out there that can help manage your calendar,
Speaker:sort your email, or even curate
Speaker:personalized meal plans. And for those of us who are looking
Speaker:to spark some creativity, there are writing
Speaker:aids, art generators, and music composition
Speaker:apps. But let me give you some specific
Speaker:examples to get you started. So for organization,
Speaker:try to doist, to do IST.
Speaker:Now this is one of my go to apps to stay organized. It
Speaker:really is. This is a to do list per se, but
Speaker:it's great for managing task with the help of AI.
Speaker:Or another app that I use is called Grammarly, grammarly,
Speaker:and it can help improve your writing, making sure that your
Speaker:message is clear and error free. And
Speaker:then for the learners that are out there, Duolingo,
Speaker:it uses AI to tailor language learning at
Speaker:your own pace. Then there's Spotify. I know we all
Speaker:know about Spotify. Well, Spotify employs AR
Speaker:to curate, personalized playlist and to
Speaker:recommend new songs based on your listing listening history,
Speaker:which kinda enhances that music experience. And
Speaker:there's Pinterest. I know we've all been on Pinterest at one time
Speaker:or another. Well, Pinterest uses AI to
Speaker:recommend pins and boards tailored to your interest,
Speaker:making it easier to discover new ideas and inspirations.
Speaker:Lately, I've been on Pinterest a lot as I'm trying to work through this
Speaker:home remodel. I'm on there looking for stuff for the
Speaker:kitchen and the bathroom, and it's cool because now it's
Speaker:picked up on that. So when I sign on, it's giving me recommendations.
Speaker:And then there's Waze. That's the app that I use for
Speaker:maps, but it's a r AI powered
Speaker:and it provides real time traffic updates,
Speaker:route suggestions, and alerts about road conditions,
Speaker:making driving safer and maybe more efficient.
Speaker:And there's one that's interesting. It's called RoboKiller. So it
Speaker:uses AI to block spam calls and protect users from
Speaker:phone scams by analyzing call patterns and
Speaker:blocking unwanted numbers. Now
Speaker:speaking of a creative assistant, there's a
Speaker:tool that I have to mention, and I'm sure you guys have all heard about
Speaker:it. It's Chat GPT by OpenAI.
Speaker:It's, a conversational AI that can
Speaker:write with you, brainstorm ideas, or just
Speaker:honestly simply chat about almost any topic
Speaker:under the sun. It's kinda like having a brainstorming
Speaker:buddy available 247, making it an
Speaker:excellent way for anyone to dip their toes into the world
Speaker:of AI. So I use chat g p t often.
Speaker:Okay. Let me be honest. I probably use it every day for something,
Speaker:but I've used it to help me with menus when I have no idea what
Speaker:to cook. I've used it for a meal plan. I
Speaker:think one day I asked it for a low carb meal plan,
Speaker:and it put together 1. I've used it for a workout plan.
Speaker:One time I was super busy, and so I added
Speaker:all that I had to do. And I asked asked it to help me
Speaker:with the schedule, and it did. We started my day, like,
Speaker:at 7, and I ended it maybe around
Speaker:8 PM. And so we allocated the
Speaker:time, of course, that I needed to work. But even breaks through my workout
Speaker:my work day, like, is there something I can fit in at noon or
Speaker:something I can fit in before work? And it helped me put together
Speaker:a schedule. Then sometimes when I'm writing, I'm a
Speaker:little wordy, and so I've actually used it to help me
Speaker:condense what I'm writing or even to brainstorm
Speaker:on topics. There's a free version of chat
Speaker:GPT. If you want to try it. Now
Speaker:you can always use it as the gospel. Now, sometimes
Speaker:AI has what they call hallucinations
Speaker:where it can create false information. So I
Speaker:wouldn't use it, like, to write a book, or do
Speaker:anything like that where maybe statistics are needed. And
Speaker:if you do make sure that you fact check,
Speaker:I've also used several other AI powered tools to
Speaker:help me with editing this podcast, but let's
Speaker:not get carried away. AI isn't perfect.
Speaker:It's not all sunshine and rainbows. AI is a powerful
Speaker:tool, and like any tool, it can be used for
Speaker:good or not so good. Remember that time that your bank
Speaker:maybe flagged suspicious activity and saved your savings?
Speaker:Well, scammers use AI too. They craft fake
Speaker:emails that are so real, they'd fool your mom or
Speaker:even you. Criminals can use AI to do
Speaker:voice clones or create realistic photos
Speaker:just to scam. I heard of an incident where
Speaker:they cloned a voice and called someone saying they
Speaker:were their grandson and
Speaker:they were in trouble and needed money. And so people have
Speaker:actually sent money to help who they thought was their
Speaker:grandchild or somebody else in the family.
Speaker:Sometimes AI, just like anything else, it ends up
Speaker:in the wrong hands, which is a reminder that being
Speaker:tech savvy is about staying aware,
Speaker:not just knowing how to swipe and tap.
Speaker:And let's address the elephant in the room. There's a lot of
Speaker:concern out there about AI, especially replacing
Speaker:human jobs. I have no magic ball, but I
Speaker:don't see that happening to the extreme of the
Speaker:conversations that I've heard. Remember,
Speaker:AI is a tool. It's one that can take our
Speaker:repetitive task or analyze data
Speaker:faster than we ever could, which then frees
Speaker:us up for more meaningful work. So friend
Speaker:or foe? I believe it's a friend, but
Speaker:actually, it's a bit of both. The key
Speaker:isn't fearing AI. It's understanding it and using
Speaker:it wisely. So when used
Speaker:responsibly, it can enhance our lives in
Speaker:countless ways. It's about understanding
Speaker:and engaging with AI. It's about using
Speaker:it and not letting it use us. We need to
Speaker:advocate for AI that works for us, not against
Speaker:us and stay in the driver's seat. Think of
Speaker:it as a tool, a powerful one, but it's up to
Speaker:us to decide how to use it.
Speaker:So how does AI show up in your life? Are you
Speaker:benefiting or you may be may be struggling?
Speaker:Because understanding AI isn't just about the future,
Speaker:it's about making our lives better right now.
Speaker:I hope today's episode has demystified AI a bit for
Speaker:you and maybe even spark some curiosity.
Speaker:AI isn't just for the young or the tech obsessed. It's
Speaker:for all of us offering opportunities to simply task
Speaker:or to simplify tasks to enhance
Speaker:creativity and even tackle big
Speaker:challenges. As always, I'd love to hear your
Speaker:thoughts. Have you had an interesting encounter
Speaker:with AI? Are there concerns that you'd like to discuss
Speaker:further? Let's keep the conversation going.
