Speaker:

One of the questions I get

Speaker:

asked a lot is, Emma, help me

Speaker:

be better at time management.

Speaker:

It's the wrong question.

Speaker:

What we need to focus

Speaker:

on is energy management.

Speaker:

Do you know how I know this?

Speaker:

Because you do not have enough

Speaker:

energy to show up in your business.

Speaker:

Oh, you are good to no one.

Speaker:

And I had to learn

Speaker:

this the very hard way.

Speaker:

A couple of years ago, I

Speaker:

got COVID as we all did.

Speaker:

And my Turned into long COVID,

Speaker:

then turned into glandular fever.

Speaker:

And so if I didn't rest,

Speaker:

I was going to get worse.

Speaker:

And I was going to get chronic fatigue.

Speaker:

So I had to pull back on everything.

Speaker:

I kept going with my delivery

Speaker:

because I'm very loyal to my clients

Speaker:

and didn't want to let them down.

Speaker:

But I stopped doing anything that was

Speaker:

relationship building, fully knowing

Speaker:

when you have your own business, if

Speaker:

you don't relationship build, it kind

Speaker:

of hurts at the other end, right?

Speaker:

Because we always have to be relationship

Speaker:

building, but also knowing if I

Speaker:

didn't address this health issue,

Speaker:

if I didn't get my energy back, I

Speaker:

would be good for absolutely no one.

Speaker:

There are so many ways to

Speaker:

manage our time, right?

Speaker:

There is no more time.

Speaker:

I wrote a book.

Speaker:

It was called Go Getter

Speaker:

and we talk about time.

Speaker:

And I always hear women say, Oh,

Speaker:

if I just had a few more hours in

Speaker:

the day, Oh, if I could just have

Speaker:

an extra hour, if I could turn back

Speaker:

time, all the things, it just can't

Speaker:

happen, but we can hack our time.

Speaker:

You know, we can, we can.

Speaker:

batch similar items together.

Speaker:

We can turn our email notifications off.

Speaker:

We can set amazing timers.

Speaker:

I use the Pomodoro technique, which

Speaker:

is 25 minutes on, five minutes off.

Speaker:

We can work out when our most

Speaker:

productive time of the day is.

Speaker:

For me, it's first thing in the morning.

Speaker:

I love getting my shoes done

Speaker:

first thing in the morning.

Speaker:

And we can schedule

Speaker:

stuff in our calendar.

Speaker:

They have some great time

Speaker:

hacks and calendar hacks.

Speaker:

if you need them.

Speaker:

But what about energy?

Speaker:

how do we hack our energy?

Speaker:

What do we do with our energy?

Speaker:

How do we make the best of

Speaker:

the energy that we've got?

Speaker:

It's a great question and I've

Speaker:

got some beautiful new habits

Speaker:

now thanks to my glandular fever.

Speaker:

And what I thought I'd do is

Speaker:

just share with you a couple of

Speaker:

things that help me now with my

Speaker:

energy that I take very seriously.

Speaker:

The first thing you

Speaker:

are not going to love.

Speaker:

The first thing is

Speaker:

allowing yourself to rest.

Speaker:

I was one of these people who

Speaker:

was just on and on and on.

Speaker:

Constantly.

Speaker:

And if I sat down, I felt lazy.

Speaker:

That narrative in my head helped

Speaker:

me not have a break, help me not

Speaker:

have a holiday, help me not release

Speaker:

anything that's going on in my head.

Speaker:

So the first thing I had to do was

Speaker:

give myself permission, permission

Speaker:

to rest, which was super duper hard.

Speaker:

and by the way, families make this hard.

Speaker:

Whenever someone sees mom sitting down on

Speaker:

a couch, chances are they will watch you.

Speaker:

In order to manage my energy

Speaker:

now, I have kept the naps up.

Speaker:

See the thing is I had to

Speaker:

create all new habits and I had

Speaker:

to undo all these bad habits.

Speaker:

And so now I've got really good habits

Speaker:

and I'm just wanting to keep them.

Speaker:

I take regular breaks now.

Speaker:

Before I had.

Speaker:

Probably not been as good at holding

Speaker:

on to lunch breaks, toilet breaks, and

Speaker:

morning tea breaks, and afternoon breaks.

Speaker:

Now I realize the importance of

Speaker:

breaks and I actually get out

Speaker:

into the sunshine and walk my dog.

Speaker:

My dog is 14 years old, so

Speaker:

he doesn't walk very far.

Speaker:

It takes 15 minutes to get around

Speaker:

our little block and that's a perfect

Speaker:

amount of time for me to get outside

Speaker:

of the house, outside of my brain,

Speaker:

and outside of the Zoom world,

Speaker:

and give my Brain time to process.

Speaker:

So we do loads of walks

Speaker:

in between sessions.

Speaker:

I'm now up super early I get up

Speaker:

at 515 in the morning and I go

Speaker:

for an hour and a half walk and

Speaker:

that's bliss That is my me time.

Speaker:

If you can do that, please do that.

Speaker:

It's amazing for energy management

Speaker:

It's amazing way to start the day.

Speaker:

I put in an audible book and I

Speaker:

listen as I go And it's just amazing.

Speaker:

I also meditate.

Speaker:

I've meditated for five years.

Speaker:

So I also meditate, which is really

Speaker:

helpful for me just to ground me and

Speaker:

make sure that I'm managing my energy.

Speaker:

And like I said before, rest, I

Speaker:

rest so much and I sleep very well.

Speaker:

I think one of the things that a

Speaker:

lot of women especially do is they

Speaker:

get to the end of the day and like,

Speaker:

Oh, all right, I'm going to have

Speaker:

some time to myself, time to myself.

Speaker:

and then they jump on their phone and

Speaker:

they're like, doom scrolling or they drop

Speaker:

down a social media rabbit Warren and

Speaker:

they miss out on sleep because of it.

Speaker:

And I am very focused on my sleep.

Speaker:

So I am in bed before nine o'clock

Speaker:

because I'm up at five 15 and I

Speaker:

have to get eight hours sleep.

Speaker:

It is a non negotiable for me.

Speaker:

Is that eight hours sleep?

Speaker:

I think that's eight hours sleep.

Speaker:

Anyway, feel free to

Speaker:

let me know if it's not.

Speaker:

And I think that the thing that I

Speaker:

have realized is more energy means

Speaker:

more time and energy for my family

Speaker:

and not just giving them the dregs.

Speaker:

There were years there, I've

Speaker:

been in business for seven years.

Speaker:

I reckon the first two years

Speaker:

were really unsustainable.

Speaker:

I did what I had to do, but I

Speaker:

wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Speaker:

And I.

Speaker:

Ignored the warning signs.

Speaker:

I ignored the health signs.

Speaker:

I ignored all the things that I

Speaker:

should have been paying attention to.

Speaker:

And also I gave my family the dregs.

Speaker:

No family wants the dregs.

Speaker:

No friends wants the dregs.

Speaker:

No friends wants a boring friend.

Speaker:

People want you when you're engaged

Speaker:

and energetic and enthusiastic.

Speaker:

And for me, that takes, means that I

Speaker:

have to really manage my energy well,

Speaker:

especially since I'm an introvert.

Speaker:

So what happened?

Speaker:

We spent seven months, seven

Speaker:

months getting my health right,

Speaker:

getting my eating right, getting my

Speaker:

exercise right, getting my sleeping

Speaker:

right, getting my resting right.

Speaker:

And now we're back and it's

Speaker:

beautiful and I'm doing nothing

Speaker:

to disturb the peace on that.

Speaker:

And I've come back with way more energy,

Speaker:

way more time in the day because Um,

Speaker:

throughout that time, I had to pare back

Speaker:

on what was urgent versus important,

Speaker:

you know, and we all have to make

Speaker:

some of those decisions sometimes.

Speaker:

We all get wrapped up on

Speaker:

focusing on time, don't we?

Speaker:

What about you?

Speaker:

Are you focused on time or

Speaker:

are you focused on energy?

Speaker:

I would love you just to grab a cuppa

Speaker:

because after all it's tea with a

Speaker:

queen, grab a cuppa and think about

Speaker:

Are you spending your time in the

Speaker:

right areas and are you managing

Speaker:

your energy in the right way?

Speaker:

And chances are you're not because that's

Speaker:

just, we pack our lives full of stuff.

Speaker:

And so what can you do to take

Speaker:

some things away, to take some of

Speaker:

the pressure off and to actually

Speaker:

invest in your own energy?

Speaker:

this is a really important topic

Speaker:

and I would love to hear how you're

Speaker:

going to focus on your energy.

Speaker:

Let us know.
