So the question is, can you be trusted?

What, with nothing.

You coming at me, Especially not a list at Walmart.

I am not to be trusted with a list at Walmart if you only want me to spend.

Buy stuff on the list.

Actually, I'm better on the list than I am without one.

I'll get everything on the list.

My problem is I get everything that's not on the list as well.

Actually, I need supervision.

I'm way better at it than my wife is.

My wife and I will put.

She'll give me a list, or we'll put one together, or I'll put one together.

Doesn't matter.

And for the most part, I stay on the list.

Every once in a while, I might get something here or there on top of it.

But, you know, I'm pretty much sticking to the list, or as I like to call it, getting the messages.

So she, however, will go and she'll have a list, but there's all kinds of stuff that comes home and it's on sale or, oh, I forgot we needed that and all that.

And there's always a justifying reason, but I'm like, you do this way more than me.

Lizzie's even rare about the whole.

She gets what she goes in for.

She doesn't want to be there any longer than she has to.

I'm the guy that's like, let's go down this aisle.

I think for Sadie and I, it's the.

I'll do it in a way that's usually I have other things to do.

So that's when I'm in and out.

If I have time, I relax and I just enjoy the trip.

And I think Sadie does the same thing and I think it's because we have as many.

We have five kids.

I don't care Walmart if it, if it feels stressful, I'm more out.

But like if I'm at Publix for.

Instance, like, I'll see I'm uncomfortable Publix because it costs way too much.

I like looking at buy ones.

Like it's not worth it.

I might as well just go to Walmart.

I'd rather drive to labelle Walmart to be honest.

It actually is really nice up there.

It's the people that allow their kids to run nuts or they don't care.

Where I grew up, this Walmart.

Some of the Walmarts, man, were so terrible and so filled with people.

I didn't have Walmart when I was growing up.

It wasn't there at first, but it.

Was there towards purity supreme worldwide.

But it existed not even when I was.

The area does not bother me.

The area I was in was not there was other ones, but the one that the city I grew up in, that one was just bad.

If you went down there, it felt worse than.

See, I grew up in the Midwest and so the closer you get to their headquarters, the nicer the Walmart.

Just as far as people.

Even though because people in high positions don't like driving far.

I didn't start going to Walmart until I came to Florida.

Well, in 2004 you had other options apparently.

We know that is.

It's a word that can either make or break a person's perception of thought, a person or a situation.

Right.

Because you know, you do.

It's like, do I trust my gut feeling?

Do I trust what you think should happen?

Do I even trust you?

Right.

That's how we are.

We're always using this word.

I feel like you pointed at me a lot.

Like there was no a lot, it was equal pointing right at me.

Do I trust you?

She doesn't even know she can trust her gut.

Why would she trust you?

Yeah.

So we're only going to dive into the one meaning of this word trust.

Okay.

We're not going to say.

We're not going to talk about the trust.

We're not going to talk about financial.

Financial.

We're not going to do that.

Right.

Okay.

So the Merriam Webster's definition of trust is assured reliance on the character, ability, strength or truth of someone or something.

Right.

Britannica says belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest and effective.

And then Oxford defines it as a firm belief in the realize, reliability, truth or ability of someone or something.

Confidence or faith in a person or thing or in an attribute of a person.

And then the verb form of it for Oxford is to believe, to rely on the truthfulness or evidence of.

So with that being said, you know, you're looking at these three.

These three definitions.

Basically, what do you go with?

You know, who is it that you trust on what they're saying?

I mean, Oxford hits it on the nail when you're going into that Christian, you know, Bible, look at the Lord more so than you do on the other two, because I feel like they're more so going on when they say someone or something.

Like God is not just something.

You know what I'm saying?

And I feel like where Oxford talks about faith, that more hits it on the.

On the nail.

Yeah, well, I mean, so, you know, when you think about trust and faith, I think those things go hand in hand.

To have faith in something would be to have trust in something.

And when you.

When I think about.

So I think I brought this up before on a different show.

I'm not sure, but I've talked about it recently in some place of my life.

But one of the guys I went to it Was in seminary, was talking about, they were away.

And this guy was in a place where he was trying to translate the Bible and the word faith, they didn't really have a word for it that he could.

So he said he found himself kind of leaning back in his chair and he said, thought about it.

He's like, I'm putting a lot of faith into this chair that's going to hold me.

I'm not going to fall over.

So he looked at the guy and said, what would you call this?

And he leaned back and he gave him a word that meant to put.

To put all your weight on.

To lean all of your weight on.

And he's like, that's what faith basically is.

You're putting all your trust in that.

You're putting all your weight on that, you know.

So if you're trusting someone's going to take care of your kids, you're leaning on them and you're putting your weight on them that they're going to do such things.

If you're trusting someone to teach the right things, to protect you, to provide for you, basically all the things that we give attributes, I mean, the God is the person that we can trust more than anyone by far.

It's not even close.

But when you think about all the ways that we can trust in him, when we can see the pieces of those things in people around us, that's when we can start to put that into other people as well.

If you're talking about ultimate trust, I would say only with God.

I mean, that's the easy answer.

Right.

So you.

I don't know about you like this.

So growing up, I was always my motto, DTA don't trust anyone.

Correct.

Yeah.

You know, because where I'm from, you don't know if that person is going to step on you and use you as a mask.

Stab you in the back.

Are you, you know, you ever seen.

The movie the Italian Job, the remake where they drove little minis around to make their little heist?

I don't think I.

I don't.

I'm not a big action person or anything like that.

So that was in that movie, the actor, Senior Sutherland, he.

He said this line and I thought it was interesting.

Yeah, I know.

I said, okay, senior.

Senior Southern.

He said, oh, I trust everyone.

It's the devil inside them I don't trust.

And I was like, you know, there's something to that where, you know, we who are in this broken world and easily fall victim to temptation.

Like, that's the part that makes it hard sometimes to, like, can I.

Can I trust this person to not do the thing that I need them not to do?

You know, it took me 18 years to build up a wall of, you know, I can only trust what I say, right?

Not what anybody else says, because this.

Other people have an ulterior motive.

You know what I'm saying?

So then I go and I get saved, right?

Do you know how much of a battle it is?

Do I trust what I say now?

Do I trust what he says?

Do I trust what I read?

Do I trust what I hear?

Trust is a word I throw around now that it's like I can't even grasp what part of it.

But I was reading some stuff and I was like, okay, that makes a little bit more sense.

So I found these two quotes that I really liked.

It's a Christian evangelist named George Mueller, right?

He said, the beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.

Right?

And you know, that's a big thing that is.

Now everybody's got anxiety.

Well, yeah, I can relate to that.

I mean, wholeheartedly and.

Sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off.

I mean, I talked about this.

I know you and I talked about this once again, Like, I don't remember where all my conversations go.

So if I end up repeating myself to people that listen on this show, I'm sorry.

Down the rabbit hole.

It's just how it applies here.

Like, so on this conversation, you know.

But this is something that I fall into this sometimes, actually, where I've learned.

I feel like I've learned this lesson with God.

And then he'll be like, you're doing it again.

And usually it's revolving like I feel him make.

Basically, there's a move that needs to be made or something new that my wife and I need to embrace, whether it's a job move, a financial move, or this or that and that.

Every time I start to get nervous and anxious, and it's usually because I'm putting my hands on the wheel.

I'm trying to figure out how this is going to.

To work.

I'm going to somehow solve this so that it won't be a bother and I can have it figured out and it causes me so much stress and God eventually will let me do it just long enough to then go, you know, you need to just trust me.

Oh, man.

Listen, the road, like I used to Know how to drive.

Before I became Christian, I don't know how to drive anymore.

Every time I go to lay my hand.

No, God, I got this watch, and I go to lay my hands on the wheel, I'd be like.

I'm like, oh, my gosh.

What.

What's going on?

I just.

I just went through that.

Where I took that step away, you know, because I was just going through so much, and my.

My brain was just.

It was in overdrive, and I didn't know how to calm it down, and I didn't know what to say to the point where I didn't come to church.

I just went to work.

I.

And I went home.

I wasn't doing good in class because something was going on.

It was a battle, you know?

Yeah, it's like an infection.

Oh, it was bad, you know, and until finally, when I.

It took me leaving my house for our anniversary last week, when I was like, oh, wait a minute.

It's something else.

It's something else.

This.

Like a shroud, like a.

Like a dark cloud just over the house, and it's like.

It's just.

It keeps pulling me back in, pulling me and pulling me in.

And when I say stress from this end to that end, it's like, thick.

You can cut it, you know, until.

When we left and then I came back and I said, you know what?

I got to go back and do what I was doing before.

So that's why when you said, hey, you want to do the podcast?

And I was like, okay.

It was me saying to Derek Tennant, like, let me start another Bible study.

This is what I want to do.

So, like, I had to come back to it, you know?

And that was my big thing.

That's why I said trust, because my trust does this.

It filters.

Well, I will say that when we say, can we even trust ourselves?

It's like, well, we like to think we can, especially when we are even the Christian who believes that, hey, I'm following the Lord and he's my guide, but if you're putting a lot in your own hands and you're thinking, I can do it myself, sometimes we don't realize that when we say, I can do this myself, it means I'm gonna do this without God.

And when I do that, I'm like, I don't think I can be trusted with that.

Because when I go to God and go, I'm sorry, and luckily, the Lord is patient with me and forgiving with me and everything that I need him.

To do, he's patient too.

There was a music video that I saw one time.

It was a play.

Music video, whatever.

Play to a song or whatever.

It was one of those Christian, you know, like the skits, some music, whatever.

My brain, it's not there.

We'll get you there.

The summary of it, though, like, the whole thing, the synopsis.

The synopsis.

The short end of the stick, the thing that is really strong that I pulled from it was anytime that you decide you're gonna do something without God, you're re.

Nailing him to the cross is the only way to get him to stay.

Wow, that's an interesting, hurtful thing.

Very interesting.

Well, I mean, it's.

To some degree, I mean, I guess I can't argue with that because we start to think we can do life on our own without him again.

And, you know, it's amazing to me that God is that patient with me sometimes, especially in the things that, like, I feel like I'm.

And every time he does it, I get a little better.

Honestly, I feel like I listen quicker the next time I try to do it.

And I think that it's more impactful when I realize when he says, finally goes, you need to trust me in this.

It's easier for me to accept that and then let go.

Which was much harder earlier in my walk than it.

Because this last thing that I was working with, it was like, how's this gonna work?

And he was finally like, if this is what I'm telling you to do, then you need to know that I've got you, like, every other time.

And I was like, oh, yeah, that's me being dumb.

And it's weird how the peace came over me because it was easier for me to go, okay.

And it's been fine since then for me that this is going to happen.

God's providing a way.

I might not know how that's going to work, and it might be different than I ever thought it's going to be.

But you know what?

He has a way of making it work in ways that I can't.

So the example that's given in the skit was like, college student Jesus is hanging out with them everywhere they go.

Just right there, everywhere they go.

And like, all right, I'm gonna go to this party.

You stay here.

I'll be back.

And they go to leave, and he goes to follow, because he doesn't do that.

Right?

He's with you always.

And so he's like, no, no, no, I'm gonna go to the party.

I'll be back.

And it happens, like, three times.

And then when he turns around, he's like.

I said, stay here.

As he's nailing him to the cross, right?

So it's like.

It's one of those, like, how often do we tell God?

I don't.

I want to do things my way.

Not just, like, the inadvertent things, like trying to do things my way, but, like, I'm not even gonna pray about this.

Cause I know you'll be involved.

I.

I don't need your help in this.

I've got this, you know?

But, like, how direct do we get sometimes?

You know, it's almost scary if we really think about it.

I noticed that, you know, the mind is so indecisive.

My mind's indecisive.

I'm always like.

And the one thing that I.

When I read it today, and I was like, oh, okay, I gotcha.

You know, was Hebrews 13, 8, right?

No matter how indecisive I am and how I'm constantly, always wanting to change, he never changes.

He stays the same.

So I need to put my trust there.

Because no matter what, he'll never change.

The way he looks at me, the way he feels about me, and the purpose that he has for me.

Whereas me.

Oh, man, listen, I might have red hair tomorrow.

Stop playing with you.

I wouldn't doubt it.

It's like, it's always.

I'm always searching for something different because I don't want to feel what I'm feeling.

So I'm always looking towards difference, you know?

Now, what about when dealing with other people?

Because when we talk about trust, we talk about, like, how hard it is to trust some people because we built walls or whatever.

But, like, at the same time, we're supposed to be doing everything that we do as though we're doing it for the Lord.

We trust him.

Why don't we trust him to have our back when we're dealing with somebody else?

You know, it may not be them that you're placing the trust in, but why can't we put our trust in God when we're dealing with that person and saying, look, I understand.

I've built these walls because people have hurt me.

People have done these things.

You know, it's hard to trust other.

People because the flesh doesn't want to allow it.

I'm telling you, the flesh, just like God, is powerful, the flesh is powerful.

You know, not more powerful, not more powerful, but it is powerful.

Yeah.

You know, and it's like, that's why you get those feelings like, okay, I met you for the first time.

This is how I look at you.

I think that's actually how she did the first time.

You know, I didn't do that to you, Derek.

I mean, that was like the.

At least in between us, you know, kind of a.

And it's crazy because sometimes I'll be at the grocery store or I'll be at a.

Anywhere, and someone will say something, and I'll just start talking to a person.

And I have no problem with that, because you know what?

At the end of the day, guess what?

You're probably not gonna see him ever again.

There's a good chance you're not gonna.

But.

But I am a firm believer.

But does everybody have an end game?

No, not everybody doesn't, but I.

I am a firm believer in.

I do talk to everybody.

Because you know what?

I don't know what you're dealing with that day, and maybe I might say something that might change your train of your thought process.

So I do that.

And I think why I'm so standoffish with people is because when I do try to help people and they are like, no, I'm going to do it my way, which is probably how God feels about me, but I get mad.

I'd be like, okay, well, do it yourself then.

You know?

Like, you know, I find it strange.

I struggle with.

I struggle more with people in the church than I do with people outside the church when it comes to that.

Now, some people in the church I know have got my back more than anybody.

Right?

Like, I get that.

But, like, when it comes to church people, it's like I have lately even become an introvert.

I'll go hide.

I don't want to.

I don't want to talk to anybody.

Like, I don't.

I don't.

I don't want to do that.

Like, I don't want to deal with any of that.

I don't know who I can trust.

I don't know.

You know, all that kind of stuff's rolling around in my head where, like, Homeless dude on the street.

I'll tell him my life story, you know, whatever I can tell him, hey, I'm starting a laser engraving business.

I think a lot of strider design.

I should have brought my little sign.

Like, dude, I got tumblers now.

I got tumblers figured out.

But you and I have both experienced church hurt in a capacity where we were hurt by the church.

Church leadership, and church leadership specifically.

And so when you have those kind of things in your past, it's even easier to put up walls, whether you're dealing with someone in leadership or.

Or even in the congregation.

You're like, how much of me should I share so that I don't get stabbed?

And I'm so.

There's nothing.

There's nothing to hate on that.

No, I mean.

You gotta move past that.

You do.

I.

It was like, I'm.

I'm such an extrovert that I just can't help but move in ways that sometimes I'm like, well, I don't know if I was ready to move that direction, but I did.

And, you know, but just because I love people on the whole, I do, and I'm, like, ready to just be that person.

So, yeah, I have to.

I can give it all.

But then at the end of the day, I need to recoup.

So then you're really an introvert who presents as an extrovert because you get your energy back when.

Yeah, yeah.

I am not.

I need to be around people.

I need people around.

I go loony.

Covid showed that in Maryland.

Covid was locked down like jail.

Like, it was bad.

Now, see me, I can.

I lost mine.

Things to do.

I see Lizzie can't do.

I'm a creative person, so I can find.

Things to do.

I'm a creative person, and I can't do it.

Sadie can spend.

She could be at the house for, like, a couple weeks.

No human reaction.

Perfectly fine.

Yeah, if I did that, I'd start to go crazy.

Lizzie could do that with the rest of her life.

I feel like Sadie probably could, you.

Know, I mean, how often I might need.

I felt so bad.

When we got locked down, it was not too far into it.

It wasn't even that long into it.

And I was already going so crazy that we had to get this guy to come out, you know, wore a mask, the whole thing, to go look at our washing machine.

We had a new dishwasher.

I talked his darn ear off the entire time.

That poor guy must have been like, I need to get out of this house.

This dude's gonna give me Covid.

Like, he's just not.

I won't.

I felt bad, but I couldn't help myself.

I just talked to him the whole time.

He don't know who I am.

I talked to him about Spam.

I was cooking Spam.

It's disgusting.

First off, it's not disgusting.

But no, that's how bad I got.

When things just.

I mean, they weren't even fully open up yet, but Sadie looked at me, he's like, you need to get out of this house.

You need to go find some people, call some people up.

Lizzie and I, for some reason, we just don't get each other when it comes to the introverted extrovertedness.

We know that is true about the other person, but we just can't.

Like, when I think about things that Lizzie should be doing or could be doing or whatever, I cannot wrap my head around the fact that some things just.

She is just drained up.

On the vice versa.

Like, she's like, she just can't imagine how I could just want to go, go, go, go, go all the time.

Well, I mean, it's not to say that I don't enjoy things by myself too.

Like, I do sit.

I'll sit and play video game by myself, watch a movie by myself, stuff like that.

But only to certain degrees.

Like, I need way less of that than I need to be around people.

I only do that whenever I don't have anybody act like I have access to.

Like, I can't.

He could be slowing you down on purpose.

There could be some reason that you're not there at that exact time.

God has equipped me with something that is phenomenal.

God has equipped me with the knowledge to wake up early, get ready and be out of the house early so that I don't get aggravated driving my eight minutes to work, right?

So I thank him for that.

I don't cuss anybody out, right?

Because if you show up early or if you leave early, you build in time, correct?

So you ain't gonna.

You're not in a rush.

This is why it's still a problem for me.

I could have all the time in the world it could.

I could have to be there at 2:00.

I'm looking to get there at 1:00.

I have all the time I need and it's just something that sets me back maybe a few seconds and I'm ready to lose it.

Because if I'm on time, I'm late.

But see, I'm a grandpa driver.
