Speaker AWarning.
Speaker AI would like to let everybody know that this first episode will be very graphic.
Speaker AI will be going into detail on how the murders took place, the attempt to dispose of the bodies, the grisly crime scene that the police discovered during a welfare check, and the notebook that had the plans for these gruesome murders.
Speaker ANovember 26, 2016 Knoxville, Tennessee.
Speaker ATwo days after Thanksgiving, 28 year old Joel Guy Jr.
Speaker AMurdered and dismembered his 61 year old father, Joel Guy Senior and his 55 year old mother Lisa Guy.
Speaker AHe stabbed his father 42 times and his mother 31 times.
Speaker AOctober 2, 2020.
Speaker AGuy Jr. Was convicted of two counts of first degree premeditated murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse.
Speaker AThe sentence of life imprisonment.
Speaker AHis motive?
Speaker AMoney.
Speaker AKeep listening to get all the details of this gruesome true crime story.
Speaker AI'm your host Clay Jones and you're listening to Nocturnal Novels.
Speaker AEpisode one, Diabolical Stew.
Speaker BSam.
Speaker AForeign okay, so first I'm going to tell you about the Guy family and then I'll tell you the story of these murders.
Speaker AJoel Guy Senior was a pipeline engineering designer and Lisa Guy was an accounts payable administrator.
Speaker AThey had been married for 31 years and were said to be true soulmates.
Speaker AThey both had a great sense of humor, were loving and kind hearted and compassionate people.
Speaker AThey enjoyed being outdoors in nature.
Speaker AJoel Sr. Had three daughters from a previous marriage.
Speaker AOne of his daughters describes him as a great storyteller.
Speaker ALisa was said to be one of the most loving, caring and forgiving people on this earth.
Speaker AShe would give the shirt off her back to anyone.
Speaker AMost of her paycheck went towards supporting Joel Jr.
Speaker AFinancially.
Speaker AShe covered his education, tuition and living expenses.
Speaker AJoel Sr. Had lost his job.
Speaker ASo instead of re entering the workforce, the couple had decided to retire, sell their Knoxville home and move back to Sir Goinsville, Tennessee where Joel Sr. Was originally from.
Speaker AJoel Guy Jr. Who is now 37 years old, is currently incarcerated at the Northwest Correctional complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee.
Speaker AHe was born in 1988 and graduated high school in 2006.
Speaker AHe is also from Sir Gainesville.
Speaker AHis family members who did not know him well called him Joel Michael.
Speaker ATo distinguish him easily from his father.
Speaker AI will be referring to him as Joel Jr. His half sisters described him as reclusive.
Speaker AHe had lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for almost a decade and attended Louisiana State University to study plastic surgery, but withdrew in 2015.
Speaker AHe spent nine years in different colleges without graduating, all which had been financed by his parents.
Speaker ABy the time he was 28, he still had never even had a job.
Speaker AHe had lived off of his parents his whole adult life, all the way until their deaths.
Speaker AJoel Jr. S roommate had described him as socially awkward and said he would stay in his room for days at a time and that he really didn't have any friends.
Speaker AWhen Joel Sr. Lost his job, he and his wife, Lisa, decided to cut Joel Jr. Off, meaning no more financial support for him.
Speaker AIt was time for him to finally take care of himself.
Speaker ALittle did they know Joel Senior and Lisa were hosting their last Thanksgiving meal, which included Joel Jr. And their three daughters.
Speaker AThe celebratory feast had went off without a hitch, and after all three daughters each returned to their individual lives.
Speaker AMeanwhile, Joel Jr. Had already been plotting out the murders of his parents for several weeks and had it all written in a shocking notebook, which I'll tell you more about a little later.
Speaker AHe continued to stay at his parents home after his sisters had left.
Speaker AWhile his mother had went out shopping, he had went upstairs to the exercise room to stab his father to death.
Speaker AThe blade had pierced his lungs, liver, kidneys and broke several ribs.
Speaker AUnknowingly, now a widow, Lisa returned home to be similarly ambushed and nine of her ribs had been severed by her own son.
Speaker AAfter trying to reach Lisa repeatedly by phone, a co worker who had been concerned called the police to request a welfare check, saying it was highly unusual for Lisa to miss work without notice.
Speaker AAfter some time had passed, the co worker was still unable to contact Lisa and again had called the police to ask what they had found.
Speaker ADuring the welfare check, the police told her that everything seemed fine and nothing looked out of place.
Speaker AThe co worker asked the police to return to the home and check again because she knew something wasn't right.
Speaker ALisa had plans for a retirement lunch with several co workers and she would have not canceled.
Speaker ADuring the first visit to the home, the Knox county patrol officer who was sent out for the welfare check knocked and rang the doorbel but received no response.
Speaker AHe then walked around to the side of the house where there was a small fence that surrounded the backyard with a locked gate.
Speaker AHe saw a doghouse and whistled for the dog, but there was no response.
Speaker AHe then returned to the front door to knock on the door and ring the doorbell once again, but still received no response.
Speaker AThe second welfare check consisted of one Detective and three officers, one of which performed the first check.
Speaker AUpon arrival, the detective had noticed vehicles in the driveway and a for sale sign in the yard.
Speaker ADespite the for sale sign in the yard, there was no realtor box on the front door, which was unusual.
Speaker AThere were groceries visible in the front foyer of the home.
Speaker AAfter speaking to some of the neighbors, the detective believed the victims were inside the home and needed immediate assistance.
Speaker AThe detective jumped over the fence into the backyard where the back door knob was missing and the glass was warm from the inside of the house.
Speaker AHe also noticed a strange odor that he described as chemical in nature.
Speaker AHe then called the realtor and confirmed that there should be a lockbox on the front door.
Speaker AAt that point, he realized the front door knob did not match the deadbolt.
Speaker ASomeone had replaced the front door knob with a doorknob from the back door.
Speaker AOne of the officers had found a garage door opener in one of the vehicles in the driveway and used it to open the garage.
Speaker AAs soon as the garage door had opened, you could immediately feel a wave of heat.
Speaker AIt was at that point the detective decided to enter the home through an interior garage door to conduct a welfare check.
Speaker ANow, once again, I'm going to give a fair warning.
Speaker AThe crime scene is pretty gruesome, so be advised.
Speaker AThe detective describing hit immediately upon entry with a strong odor and extreme heat.
Speaker AAs the detective and officers entered, they announced their presence.
Speaker AThey observed several bottles of chemicals on the floor.
Speaker AThere was a purse and wallets on the table, which alarmed the detective because most people take those things with them when they leave their residence.
Speaker AThe detective noticed a large stock pot on the kitchen stove.
Speaker ABoth the stove and oven were turned on.
Speaker AHe noticed what appeared to be feces on the living room floor.
Speaker AHe found perishable items within the groceries that were in the foyer floor.
Speaker AThere were long guns on the dining room table and none of it made sense to the detective.
Speaker AThe officers and the detective then moved up the staircase, noticing it was even hotter upstairs.
Speaker AThey could hear a dog barking as they went up the stairs.
Speaker AThey had noticed what appeared to be blood on the wall of the stairwell.
Speaker AAt the top of the stairwell were sharp instruments, a bucket, clothing and reddish brown staining on the floor and on the wall.
Speaker AAs the detective looked down the hall, he saw hands that weren't connected to a body.
Speaker AHe then entered the master bedroom where he saw a roll of plastic on the bed and items scattered on the floor.
Speaker AAs he entered the bathroom, he saw an array of tools and lights on the floor, knives and two tubs, which Appeared to have body parts liquefying.
Speaker AThe detective then returned to the kitchen and looked in the stock pot on the stove where he discovered the severed head of Ms. Lisa Guy.
Speaker AThat stock pot, I would personally assume had been used to cook their thanksgiving meal in a couple days earlier.
Speaker ANow I'm going to play an audio clip from the body cam as the police discovered the crime scene.
Speaker BThey're saying.
Speaker BRoger.
Speaker BPolice.
Speaker BPolice department.
Speaker BSheriff's office.
Speaker BLooks like blood.
Speaker BPeople's hands.
Speaker BYeah, I think so.
Speaker BThat's what I think.
Speaker BGet out now.
Speaker BWe've not cleared this.
Speaker BThere's blood all over it, though.
Speaker BYou can't back out.
Speaker BThere's rock.
Speaker ASame way we came in.
Speaker BDon't touch nothing.
Speaker AJoel Jr. Had purchased multiple chemicals to dissolve body parts and clean up the crime scene Teams had to use hazmat suits for their own safety.
Speaker AThere were gas cans and corrosive chemicals, Hydrogen peroxide and drain cleaner.
Speaker AHe had the thermostat turned up to 90 degrees in the home to attempt to destroy forensic evidence and speed up the decomposition of the bodies.
Speaker AProsecutors had referred to the scene as a diabolical stew of human remains.
Speaker AThere were several surveillance videos at stores like ace hardware, home depot, walmart, and academy sports of him purchasing chemicals, totes and a knife.
Speaker AJoel Jr. Had multiple cuts on his hands from where his father fought back for his life.
Speaker AThere was even a overturned bowflex machine in the exercise room.
Speaker AWell, Joel Jr. Had left the scene of the crime to go back to louisiana with plans to return to finish cleaning up with all the evidence left behind.
Speaker AIt didn't take long for police to identify him as the one and only suspect.
Speaker AHe was arrested in his apartment complex parking lot.
Speaker ADuring his arrest, police had discovered a meat grinder in the trunk of his car.
Speaker ANow, let's backtrack a little bit and talk about a piece of evidence that was found back at the crime scene.
Speaker AIn the upstairs bedroom where he had been staying was a backpack.
Speaker AAnd within that backpack was a notebook that was a premeditated notebook of murder.
Speaker AAnd within that notebook had the plans for this gruesome crime.

Speaker AAnother page of the notebook had the following handwritten notes.
Speaker AUltraviolet light shows fingerprints.
Speaker ACheck mail before leaving to get rid of blood.
Speaker AUse peroxide and bleach.
Speaker ADirectly underneath was the word hemoglobin with an arrow pointing to peroxide and DNA with an Arrow pointing to bleach.
Speaker AAnd on another page of the notebook were notes with the heading Destruction of bodies and listed the percentage of fat, protein, water and other compounds in the human body.
Speaker AThe last page of notes listed the victim's assets.
Speaker AHer assets, her life insurance, $500,000, possibly more with indemnity.
Speaker AWith him missing, dead, I get the whole thing.
Speaker AAll her other assets are joint.

Speaker ASo that was the crazy notebook that he used to plan this crime.
Speaker AAnd here's some other evidence that was found.
Speaker AA digital forensic examiner responded to the scene to collect a laptop that was found in an upstairs bedroom with an attached external hard drive.
Speaker AThe laptop was in the middle of the bed, unlocked and was running a Samsung app.
Speaker AWhen the examiner hovered the mouse over that app, it displayed an email email linked to that app.
Speaker AThe laptop was also running BitLocker, which is a Microsoft security tool that keeps anyone that doesn't know a password to the BitLocker inscription from looking at the hard drive.
Speaker AWhen he began the data extraction, the laptop restarted and required a password or facial recognition to access the hard drive.
Speaker AThe examiner also collected a desktop computer from the bottom floor of the victim's home and was able to perform a data extraction on it.
Speaker AHe discovered that on November 26th at 12:15pm seven USB devices were connected to the desktop.
Speaker AAt the same time, which seemed to be a significant event.

Speaker ASub Meter 1 is a billing service for water, gas and electricity meters.
Speaker AOne of the detectives on the case found a Walmart receipt in an upstairs bathroom showing purchases of some of the items recovered from inside the residence.
Speaker AThe detective obtained the Walmart security footage to determine who made the purchase.
Speaker AA retired FBI special agent who assisted in the arrest of Joel Jr.
Speaker AObtained security camera footage from Mellows in Louisiana showing Joel Jr. Making two purchases.

Speaker AThe examiner determined that Lisa's head was completely severed from her body.
Speaker AHer arms were dismembered at the shoulders and her legs were dismembered at her knees.
Speaker ANow I'm going to talk about the trial which took place in late 2020.
Speaker AJoel Jr.
Speaker APleaded not guilty but filed a motion that if he were found guilty, he would be given the death sentence.
Speaker AHis defense counsel presented no evidence on his behalf.
Speaker AThe trial took four days and he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
Speaker AThere were hundreds of exhibits of evidence that were showed to the jury.
Speaker AHe was found guilty on all counts by the jury and sentenced to two life sentences.
Speaker AWhen statements were made from family members after the verdict was read, the brother of Lisa stated that shortly after Joel Senior and Lisa's murders, Lisa's mother had been hospitalized and died of a broken heart after hearing her daughter had been murdered by her grandson.
