Hello and welcome to the Choosing Happy Podcast.
Speaker AI'm Heather Masters, your host and today I'm touching on a subject that is very close to me.
Speaker AHave you ever felt so lonely that even when you're surrounded by people, you feel invisible?
Speaker ALike you're shouting but no one's listening?
Speaker AThat's the loneliness lie.
Speaker AI want to unpack today, so stay tuned for today's Wednesday real stories on the Choosing Happy Podcast.
Speaker AAfter my parents passed, I found myself in the most remote village in England.
Speaker AAnd picture this.
Speaker AThere's no mobile signal.
Speaker AIt's damp and so cold that it gets deep into your bones.
Speaker AThe howl of the wind outside your window.
Speaker ABecause becoming your only conversation partner some days.
Speaker AOne particularly bleak morning when I was standing in the kitchen looking out of the window, watching yet another grey day unfold, and the birds and the feeders, I caught myself muttering, right then, Heather, you can do this a bit longer.
Speaker AIt was the kind of pep talk you give yourself when there's literally no one else around to hear it.
Speaker AI mean, if my dogs could talk, I'm convinced they'd be taking the mickey out of me for having full conversations with myself.
Speaker AHonestly, Mum, it's just us.
Speaker ABut those dogs, they were lifelines.
Speaker AThey are a lurcher and a whippet.
Speaker ASighthounds who absolutely must have their walks, regardless of whether it's pelting down or freezing or hot, hot sunshine.
Speaker AAnd they got me out when I couldn't have been bothered for myself.
Speaker AThe pelting of rain on my coat, the tug of their leads, their little raincoats on themselves, reminded me there was still life beyond these walls.
Speaker AThen life got interesting when Covid hit and everyone discovered isolation for the first time.
Speaker AAnd I had to laugh.
Speaker AI'd been in lockdown for three years already.
Speaker ABut during Storm Awen in November of 2021, when 70 foot trees crashed down at 2am in the morning and we lost power for 10 days, something magical actually happened.
Speaker AI found it really tough.
Speaker AI have to say that was one of my toughest times, because that's when I really felt vulnerable.
Speaker ANot just isolated, but scared.
Speaker AAnd then neighbours I barely knew appeared with hot meals, homemade soup, candles, conversation.
Speaker AAnd it was just evidence that the loneliest of times can sometimes birth the most profound connections bringing people together.
Speaker AThese moments of whispered resilience, these tiny choices to keep going, quietly built the bridge back to hope.
Speaker ASo here are some of the things that I've learned.
Speaker ALoneliness is like trying to tune a radio in the middle of a storm.
Speaker AIt's all static and Crackling with voices, fading in and out.
Speaker AAnd the trick isn't finding perfect reception.
Speaker AIt's learning to crash through the static to find your frequency, to show up as who you are and all of your truth.
Speaker AThe truth about connection is it's not about being surrounded by people.
Speaker AIt's about feeling truly seen and heard.
Speaker AThat starts with being willing to be seen.
Speaker ASometimes connection is as simple as greeting the postman, joining an online group, or, yes, even having conversations with your dogs.
Speaker AEvery tiny choice towards connection counts.
Speaker AAnd here's something crucial I need you to hear.
Speaker ALoneliness isn't just a personal struggle.
Speaker AIt's on a massive rise.
Speaker AGlobally, more people than ever are feeling unseen, unheard and disconnected, separated.
Speaker ASo if you're hesitating to reach out because you think others don't want to hear from you, stop right there.
Speaker AFlip the script entirely.
Speaker AThe truth is, you might just be the unexpected gift in someone's day.
Speaker AYour voice, your hello, your simple message could be exactly the connection someone is craving, even if they don't say it out loud.
Speaker ASo instead of thinking I'm bothering them, I'm interrupting them, start believing I might be exactly what they need right now.
Speaker AThat's kind of the thought that keeps me making these podcast episodes.
Speaker ASo, before we move on, I want you to think about this.
Speaker AWhat's one small way you might reach out today?
Speaker ANot as someone who's bothering others, but someone who has a gift.
Speaker AOffer the gift of genuine, genuine human connection.
Speaker AAnd it doesn't have to be massive.
Speaker AIt can be saying hello to someone who's kind of fallen off your radar.
Speaker AYou might be surprised how absolutely thrilled they are to hear from you.
Speaker ASo if you're feeling isolated right now, try one tiny active connection.
Speaker ASend a text or an invite you've been putting off.
Speaker ASmile at someone in the shop queue.
Speaker AJoin an online community about something you care about.
Speaker ABut do it with this new belief that you're not imposing, you're offering a gift.
Speaker AIn a world where loneliness is reaching epidemic proportions, your willingness to connect makes you exactly what someone else needs.
Speaker AIf this story touched something in you, or if you've got your own loneliness story, I'd love to hear from you.
Speaker ASo share it with us@choosing happypodcast or on socials, or pop over to the website choosinghappypodcast.com and remember, you're not as alone as loneliness wants you to believe.
Speaker AAnd then reaching out, even to strangers on the Internet, you might just be the bright spot in someone's day that changes everything.
Speaker AConnection is always a choice, even when it feels tough, even when it feels impossible.
Speaker AEspecially then.
