Speaker ALet's get to work now, your host, Sam Wakefield.
Speaker BSo, question for you.
Speaker BHave you ever noticed how weird it feels to change your mind?
Speaker BLike there's some invisible referee following, following you through life, blowing a whistle every time you update your opinion.
Speaker BIt's like warning, violation.
Speaker BYou said the opposite thing seven months ago.
Speaker BSo there's this pressure sometimes from others, sometimes from ourselves, that we have to stay exactly who we are.
Speaker BLast week, last year, or back when we were 18 and thought monster energy drinks were a food group, or even today, if you think monster energy drinks are a food group.
Speaker BSo the thing is, nobody teaches us how to update ourselves.
Speaker BNot school, not family, not society.
Speaker BBut the truth is, changing your mind is one of the most powerful human skills.
Speaker BAnd we're terrified of.
Speaker BTerrified of being wrong, terrified of looking inconsistent, terrified of disappointing people who like the older version of us, the one we don't even like anymore.
Speaker BSo today we're going to talk about something no one ever taught, but everyone secretly struggles with how to change your mind without guilt, shame, or emotional fireworks, without having to burn the whole thing down.
Speaker BSo let's get into it.
Speaker BBut before we do, I want to take a quick second.
Speaker BLet's have a what's in your cup moment today.
Speaker BMy what's in your cup is brought to you by English.
Speaker BEnglish tea time.
Speaker BIt's later in the day for me, so it's too late for me to be drinking high octane caffeine because I don't want to be up all night.
Speaker BI am traveling tomorrow to Maryland for the maiden voyage of our door to door institute canvassing blitz for Beltway H Vac.
Speaker BSo that is going awesome.
Speaker BSo, quick update from Today was the first day of the blitz, and they set three, four appointments within the first hour.
Speaker BSo that was pretty awesome.
Speaker BTwo of them were live appointments, meaning the technicians were around the corner and said, hey, can you do it right now?
Speaker BAnd so pretty exciting.
Speaker BSo really, you'll definitely be hearing more about that later.
Speaker BBut English tea time.
Speaker BSo I've got a little bit of cream in, little bit of cream and sweetener in here.
Speaker BStaying away from processed sugar.
Speaker BSo we're using some natural sugar in here or natural sweetener.
Speaker BBut what's in your cup today?
Speaker BIs it that monster energy drink?
Speaker BIs it.
Speaker BAre you hydrating?
Speaker BYou got your, got your water, you got a latte, you got some, got some good beans.
Speaker BYou want to recommend?
Speaker BActually, somebody on the YouTube channel recommended some mushroom coffee.
Speaker BThey're using it and it's really helping with their adhd.
Speaker BSo I'd love to hear from you if you have tried the different mushroom coffees, because I'm super intrigued by them.
Speaker BI want to jump into a little bit more and check those out.
Speaker BBut let's toast this episode together.
Speaker BSo everybody grab your drink.
Speaker BThree, two, one.
Speaker BAll right, cheers.
Speaker BOne other quick announcement, just super fast.
Speaker BLet's see a couple things.
Speaker BOne is if you want to know more about coaching, my days of one on one are closing a little bit.
Speaker BI've got to close my window of the opportunities for one on one coaching because of the other projects I have going on.
Speaker BThere's still a couple spots left.
Speaker BSo in fact, I'm shorting it to one day.
Speaker BSo one day of the week for me.
Speaker BIf you want to know more about one on one coaching, message me samoseitnow.net and also if you want to get me out to your location to do a training for your team, samoseitnow.net, of course you can go to the website closeitnow.net, fill out the form there and also go join our Facebook group.
Speaker BYou can find me on Facebook, just search Close it now or Sam Wakefield.
Speaker BI'm everywhere.
Speaker BInstagram, hereal, Close it now.
Speaker BAnd I'm on LinkedIn.
Speaker BIf you're on LinkedIn, I've got a page there as well, so you can catch me at all of the different places.
Speaker BEvery single time I train on site, numbers go up so dramatically it almost pays for itself while I am there almost every single time.
Speaker BIf it's not while I'm there, it's usually within a couple days.
Speaker BAnd then the lifetime value is incredible.
Speaker BSo many awesome stories from, you know, thousands of people across the country that I've trained in person that their numbers went up and stayed there because we don't just train.
Speaker BHere's a word track and learn a script and go Role play and practice.
Speaker BYes, that is important.
Speaker BYes, we do that.
Speaker BBut also it's identity.
Speaker BYou know, we're up, literally up, leveling your team as people.
Speaker BAnd so when you think differently, you act differently and you get different results.
Speaker BAnd that is the difference when I do trainings on site for your team.
Speaker BSo message me.
Speaker BLet's chat about that and get scheduled.
Speaker BI'm looking ahead into 2026 and booking that calendar.
Speaker BSo I want to make sure that you have your spot locked in before those spots fill up.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BAnd one other thing, super quick.
Speaker BThe other thing is if you want to be part of the Door to Door Institute launch where we put appointments on your calendar like I was just telling you about, it's happening in Maryland.
Speaker BAnd also this is another reason to join the Facebook because I'm going to be sharing a ton of videos because I personally am going on the doors Thursday and Friday this week.
Speaker BSo I'm pretty excited.
Speaker BIt's been a minute since I've been on the door, so I'm going to go set appointments myself and lead from the front.
Speaker BSo if you want to know more about that, what it looks like, we're literally setting appointments at half the cost of which you can get appointments or leads for with any, any digital service online.
Speaker BSo it's super, super fun.
Speaker BSo message me if you want to know more about that.
Speaker BAnd also, last thing, and we'll get into the content.
Speaker BIf you would like a copy of I wrote recently the Guerrilla Marketing Guide to have consistently flow year round without spending a dime online.
Speaker BYou can get your copy of that@doortodoor institute.com that's my website.
Speaker BD o o r the number two d o o rinstitute.com go grab your copy of that and then you can stay in touch and get in contact with us about the Door to Door Institute and what canvassing for your H Vac company looks like.
Speaker BOkay, let's hop in here because we've, we've got a lot to cover.
Speaker BThis is going to be a good one.
Speaker BSo this episode is part of something I call the invisible curriculum.
Speaker BIt's life lessons that we desperately needed growing up, but instead, what did we get?
Speaker BLong.
Speaker BAnd so it's going to involve a handful of things.
Speaker BSelf awareness, identity transitions, emotional fluency, reinvention.
Speaker BBut without needing to blow up your life in the process.
Speaker BI've done that.
Speaker BI've been through those moments.
Speaker BI've literally burned everything down and started from scratch.
Speaker BIt is not fun, it's not pleasant.
Speaker BSo I'm Here to show you how to do it without having to do that, without having to completely abandon everyone in your life that you knew and move forward.
Speaker BSo there is a way to do it.
Speaker BYes, there are going to be some leveling up, but you can do it smoother than I did it.
Speaker BBecause every single thing I train, I want to save you from the pitfalls of running straight into a brick wall with your face first, because that's how most of my lessons in life have come.
Speaker BAnd raise your hand if you've been like me and you'd like to know an easier way.
Speaker BSo you know, these are real human skills.
Speaker BAnd today we're going to talk about one of the most important.
Speaker BWe're going to be talking about updating your internal software as you evolve without crashing the system.
Speaker BSo let's start at the beginning.
Speaker BSo the first thing is the myth of the consistent self.
Speaker BYou know, we've been told this idea, you know, and really sold on this idea that consistency equals strength.
Speaker BHow many times, especially if you've read or listened to any business people and you know, the quote unquote gurus out there, that consistency equals trustworthy, consistency equals reliable, consistency equals admirable.
Speaker BYes, absolutely, to a degree.
Speaker BBut let's be honest here, humans, we aren't exactly the poster child for consistency.
Speaker BYou know, your cells regenerate every seven years.
Speaker BEvery cell in your body.
Speaker BYour taste in music changes every.
Speaker BIf you're like me, I mean, my taste of music changes every time Spotify drops a new playlist literally constantly in that new music section.
Speaker BWhat's new?
Speaker BWhat's new?
Speaker BWhat's new?
Speaker BYou know, your values shift as you grow, your desires update every time you go through a life event or really just even just after a really good conversation.
Speaker BSo consistency, a consistent self, is a myth.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker BHow we show up in the world with our business and with our daily habits to create the life that we want.
Speaker BConsistent, persistent, disciplined action.
Speaker BYes, but who you are along the way to stay consistent for your lifetime, that is totally a myth.
Speaker BAnd yet what happens is we cling to these old identities like we're renewing our driver's license.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker BBecause somewhere along the line, changing your mind got confused with being wrong.
Speaker BBut here's the reframe.
Speaker BAnd I want you all to get this.
Speaker BConsistency isn't strength, Awareness is.
Speaker BConsistency isn't strength.
Speaker BAwareness is.
Speaker BAnd only an aware person can say, I learned something new, I understand something differently, so I choose differently.
Speaker BNow, this isn't weakness, it's maturity.
Speaker BSo the first question I have for you and I really want you to pay attention to this and go.
Speaker BGo deep, go inside on this one.
Speaker BIs there something?
Speaker BAnd ask yourself this question.
Speaker BIs there something I'm still doing or believing simply because it's familiar, not because it's actually still true for me?
Speaker BSo one more time.
Speaker BIs there something I'm still doing or believing simply because it's familiar, not because it's actually still true for me?
Speaker BYou know, there's a saying or this idea that I heard one time that immediately shifted the way that I think about change and think about belief, especially about belief.
Speaker BBelief is a thought.
Speaker BYou continue to think, it's a thought.
Speaker BYou keep thinking.
Speaker BThat's your belief.
Speaker BSo if you need to change your beliefs, we just need to change our thoughts and be open to the idea that what we've always been told might not be the best fit for you.
Speaker BSo think about that.
Speaker BIs there something I'm still doing or believing simply because it's familiar, not because it's actually still true for me or for you?
Speaker BSo.
Speaker BSo as we go through life.
Speaker BSo I want to introduce this idea to you.
Speaker BThere's something called identity lag.
Speaker BIt's the gap between the version of you that you've outgrown and the version of you that isn't fully downloaded yet.
Speaker BThe version of you that you're not fully stepped into yet.
Speaker BAnd it's this feeling of, I'm not that person anymore, but I'm not entirely sure who I am now.
Speaker BSo it's like if you were looking at a computer screen, you got the wheel that's spinning that says loading, loading, loading.
Speaker BOr your status bar.
Speaker BThat's what happens with us.
Speaker BWe get the status bar.
Speaker BThat's like, I'm not who I was, but I'm loading the person that I'm becoming.
Speaker BAnd identity lag is uncomfortable, but it's normal.
Speaker BThis is where most people freeze, though.
Speaker BAnd not because they don't want to grow.
Speaker BIt's because they're scared of letting go of the old script.
Speaker BAnd I've been in that place.
Speaker BI'm constantly in that place.
Speaker BI challenge myself to be in that place all the time.
Speaker BIn fact, I'm going to do another episode on Comfort Zone because it's very similar to this, but slightly similar, but different.
Speaker BThe same, but different.
Speaker BAnd so when.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker BAnd here's how you know this is happening in your life.
Speaker BWhen somebody says to you, hey, you're not the type to do that, or since when do you care about that?
Speaker BWhen you start hearing those type people telling you, those types of things, suddenly we start to feel guilty for evolving.
Speaker BSo identity lag is simply the friction between who you were and who you're becoming.
Speaker BIt's not a warning sign, it's a milestone.
Speaker BRaise your hand if you've ever heard the crabs in a bucket story.
Speaker BSo if you haven't, let's talk about crabs.
Speaker BAnybody that's on the coaster has ever been crabbing, you know what happens.
Speaker BSo when you have a.
Speaker BUsually when people go crabbing, basically you catch your crabs and you put them in a five gallon bucket.
Speaker BThat's how most people I've ever seen crabbing, that's how they keep their crabs.
Speaker BAnd so what happens though is when you have, when you get your first crab, you have to keep a, like a big rock or a brick or something heavy on top of the lid because one crab will climb out of the bucket.
Speaker BBut the moment that you catch your second crab, you put it in the bucket with the first crab and you can take the lid off.
Speaker BA crab by itself will climb out.
Speaker BTwo crabs will never make it out of the bucket.
Speaker BWhy is that?
Speaker BBecause the moment that one crab starts to make it up the side, the other crab will grab them and pull them back into the bucket.
Speaker BSo you can have a load of crabs in your bucket and they will never escape.
Speaker BBecause, I mean, not never, eventually they're probably going to, if you fill it up enough.
Speaker BBut this is the concept.
Speaker BCrabs in a bucket, they're going to pull them back down.
Speaker BAnd so that's what happens to us as we start to evolve, change, grow, our thoughts change.
Speaker BWe feel this pull from your people around you, also from our old identity, saying, hey, this is uncomfortable.
Speaker BI don't know that I like this.
Speaker BAnd so we start to, most of the time subconsciously readjust to match what that old identity was, even though we're well on the way to the new identity.
Speaker BAnd this is why so many times if in your life you've experienced moments or seasons of growth and of new success, but then it seems like something always happens that smashes you back down to where you were.
Speaker BAnd this cycle happens over and over and over again.
Speaker BSo this is cognitive dissonance.
Speaker BCognitive dissonance gets treated like a malfunction, like the brain glitching.
Speaker BOh, no, two thoughts.
Speaker BWho authorized this?
Speaker BYou know, it's, we have to be able to hold two thoughts that are opposing to each other in, in our hand at the same time and say these are both correct.
Speaker BThe minute that we can start to do that, then that is when we can understand that.
Speaker BWe can grow.
Speaker BBut what if cognitive dissonance is actually your mind saying, hey, you're leveling up.
Speaker BWe need new settings.
Speaker BSo it's not confusion.
Speaker BIt's a growth notification.
Speaker BThe minute you start to feel that, reframe it as like, hey, this is exciting.
Speaker BThis means I'm growing.
Speaker BIt's like your own internal software saying, update available.
Speaker BSo, you know, and here's another good example.
Speaker BI mean, it's kind of like this.
Speaker BImagine, I'm sure you've all seen hermit crabs.
Speaker BI had hermit crabs when I was a kid.
Speaker BAnd so hermit crabs, when they don't make their own shells, they have to find a shell to live in.
Speaker BSo when a hermit crab grows too big for its own shell, the shell cracks, it feels exposed, everything's uncomfortable.
Speaker BIt leaves that shell and it has to wander around in the open.
Speaker BA lot of times it finds the new shell immediately and can just move right into it, but sometimes has to wander around in the open without a shell until it finds a new shell.
Speaker BThat vulnerable moment that is the cognitive dissonance.
Speaker BThat's what happen is happening in our brain.
Speaker BSo I want you to know you're not broken, you're upgrading.
Speaker BSo ask yourself, this is the next question.
Speaker BWhat belief or habit is cracking right now?
Speaker BNot because it's wrong, but because you've grown.
Speaker BSo I'm going to give a few buckets, but it can be anything.
Speaker BIt's really interesting.
Speaker BYou could look across the United States anyway, right now, and you see a lot of people right now that are having this moment around the way they believe around politics, the way they believe around all of the different topics associated with politics in the country right now.
Speaker BYou had so many people that thought one thing until new information is released, and now we're in this mental struggle of, what do I believe now?
Speaker BAnd so that's just an example.
Speaker BAnd again, it's not a political commentary here, but it's a really easy way to recognize this happening in real time.
Speaker BSo what other areas of your life, what beliefs, what habits are starting to crack, not because it's wrong, but because you've grown past it.
Speaker BSo we've got to ask ourselves that.
Speaker BAnd so then, of course, then you ask, like, well, Sam, how do you change your mind without burning down your life?
Speaker BBecause, you know, what we don't want to do is just excommunicate people and all these types of things.
Speaker BSometimes we have to, when someone's toxic in your life, et cetera.
Speaker BBut here's the big one.
Speaker BPeople don't fear changing their mind, they fear explaining the change.
Speaker BAnd so here's I'm going to give you a framework for how to update yourself without needing a dramatic monologue or abandoning civilization.
Speaker BSo the first thing is we have to just acknowledge the growth.
Speaker BSimply, I learned something new.
Speaker BWe have to just be aware of it and acknowledge it.
Speaker BThat's it.
Speaker BGrowth doesn't require a TED Talk.
Speaker BIt is literally just acknowledging, hey, I learned something new.
Speaker BThen number two, you've got to remember to honor your past self.
Speaker BIt doesn't mean you were wrong.
Speaker BPast you wasn't clueless.
Speaker BYou were just operating with the information and emotional tools you had at the time.
Speaker BSo we have to honor our past self.
Speaker BSo if I was talking to myself, be like, Sam, you made the best decisions you could with all the information and the programming you had available.
Speaker BBut you've learned something new.
Speaker BNow it's time to move on.
Speaker BSo number three is communicate without drama.
Speaker BYou can skip the six paragraph justification.
Speaker BBasically, it's again, simple.
Speaker BWe don't need a TED Talk for this part either.
Speaker BI see it differently now.
Speaker BJust admitting that to ourselves that, wow, I see this differently now.
Speaker BI understand this differently now.
Speaker BThere's a moment in my life where I've seen some growth that I'm not the person I was.
Speaker BThis can be around fitness, this can be around nutrition, it could be around the way you communicate in your relationships, all these different things.
Speaker BSo I see it differently now.
Speaker BThat's it.
Speaker BRecognize it and being aware of it.
Speaker BAnd then number four is to transition thoughtfully.
Speaker BYou don't have to pivot overnight.
Speaker BYou're not required to exile yourself from your old identity.
Speaker BYou can shift in stages.
Speaker BAnd I think this is something that so many times when people talk about change and radical change and if you've ever been to a Tony Robbins event, yes, there can be dramatic instant change.
Speaker BBut this is also the reason so many people slide back into their old life.
Speaker BBecause it was such an instant thing.
Speaker BTheir identity couldn't keep up with the race.
Speaker BSo you can shift in stages.
Speaker BIt's remember, this is a journey.
Speaker BWe're all on a journey.
Speaker BSo think of it like dimming a light, not flipping the switch off.
Speaker BAnd so life is built on edits, not explosions.
Speaker BWe're just editing who you are along the way and it's okay.
Speaker BAnd then number five, the future draft technique.
Speaker BSo I'm going to give you an exercise and I want you to to build some time into your day, have some quiet time, block out a time in your schedule where you can sit and really go through this exercise because the clearer you can define this future version of yourself, the better and faster you're going, the smoother you're going to get there and the faster you'll be able to actually achieve that.
Speaker BAnd so what you want to do, and it's actually really fun too.
Speaker BSo what we want to do is we want to write yourself like a character you're going to be revising, right?
Speaker BSo this is not new me version 6.0.
Speaker BThis is not a full rebrand, just an updated draft.
Speaker BSo here are four questions that I want you to use these as the starters in this process.
Speaker BSo the first question is, what does the next version of me believe?
Speaker BWrite down what your beliefs are, your beliefs about all the things.
Speaker BWhat does the next version of me believe?
Speaker BNumber two, what habits do you finally let go of?
Speaker BWhat habits does that future self?
Speaker BWhat habits do they finally let go of?
Speaker BNumber three, what boundaries do they hold?
Speaker BWhat boundaries with others, Boundaries with your parents, boundaries with your partner, boundaries with your, your work associates.
Speaker BWhat boundaries does that better version of me?
Speaker BWhat boundaries do they hold that I'm not currently holding?
Speaker BAnd number four, how do they respond differently?
Speaker BWe all have these moments in life where we chose a response or we reacted.
Speaker BThere's a difference in reacting and responding.
Speaker BReacting is just acting based on habit or impulse.
Speaker BChoosing a response.
Speaker BWe all have that, like millisecond, anytime anything happens to choose a response instead of just reacting, how would we respond differently?
Speaker BWhat does that future better version of myself?
Speaker BHow do they respond to situations?
Speaker BBecause what's happening here, you're not erasing who you were.
Speaker BYou're editing that character into someone more aligned with who you're becoming.
Speaker BIt's not reinvention, it's refinement.
Speaker BSo here's what I want you to hear today.
Speaker BYou are allowed to evolve.
Speaker BI give you full permission.
Speaker BI needed someone to speak this into my life at once upon a time that I was allowed to evolve.
Speaker BSo I'm passing that same permission forward to all of you who are listening.
Speaker BYou are allowed to evolve.
Speaker BYou're allowed to outgrow old beliefs, old choices, old definitions of yourself.
Speaker BYou're allowed to become someone your past self might not even recognize in the best way possible.
Speaker BSo you are allowed all of those things because changing your mind isn't chaos.
Speaker BIt isn't betrayal, it isn't weakness.
Speaker BChanging your mind is an act of self respect.
Speaker BSo let's recap this real quick.
Speaker BThe consistent self is a myth.
Speaker BIdentity lag is normal cognitive Dissonance equals upgrade mode.
Speaker BSo when you feel that pressure, tell yourself I'm upgrading.
Speaker BThis is the growth phase and you can pivot without chaos.
Speaker BThe future draft technique will help you to rewrite yourself consciously.
Speaker BSo your next version begins the moment you give yourself permission to change.
Speaker BSo if something hit you from this episode, share it with someone who's stuck between versions of themself.
Speaker BMessage me with your biggest shift.
Speaker BI would absolutely love to have a conversation with you about this.
Speaker BOr your smallest one, or the one you're scared to admit.
Speaker BThose are okay too.
Speaker BWe all have these different phases and if you want more episodes like this, subscribe subscribe to the podcast.
Speaker BSubscribe on YouTube.
Speaker BGo like and subscribe because we're just getting started with the Invisible curriculum.
Speaker BI would love to know how this episode had landed with you.
Speaker BAnd I will totally.
Speaker BI absolutely plan on doing more of this because this is the stuff no one talks about but is the difference maker between an average performer and a top performer.
Speaker BYou cannot get the results that a top performer gets until you become the person that is required to be that top performer.
Speaker BI don't care how many scripts you learn, I don't care how many objection rebuttals you learn, until you become that person, you're never going to consistently sustain that level of performance.
Speaker BSo back to consistency.
Speaker BConsistency is important in our actions, but consistent.
Speaker BWe have to constantly be growing and changing.
Speaker BSo if you got some value from this, please share it with your teammates.
Speaker BShare it with somebody you know.
Speaker BAnd I would love if you went and left me a review Apple Podcast Leave me a five star review on Apple Podcasts.
Speaker BGo to Google and search Close It Now.
Speaker BYou can leave me a review on Google as well.
