Speaker ASubscribe here's today's reading and we are.
Speaker BReading today from the gospel of John 8:12 19 from the Message.
Speaker BYou're missing God in all this.
Speaker BJesus once again addressed them, I am the world's light.
Speaker BNo one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness.
Speaker BI provide plenty of light to live in.
Speaker BThe Pharisees objected.
Speaker BAll we have is your word on this and we need more than that to go on.
Speaker BJesus replied, you're right that you only have my word, but you can depend on it being true.
Speaker BI know where I have come from and where I go next.
Speaker BYou don't know where I'm from and where I'm headed.
Speaker BYou decide according to what you can see and touch.
Speaker BI don't make judgments like that.
Speaker BBut even if I did, my judgment would be true because I wouldn't make it out of the narrowness of my experience, but in the largeness of the One who sent me, the Father that fulfills the conditions set down under God's law that you can count on the testimony of two witnesses.
Speaker BAnd that is what you have.
Speaker BYou have my word and you have the word of the Father who sent me.
Speaker BThey said, where is this so called Father of yours?
Speaker BJesus said, you're looking right at me and you don't see me.
Speaker BHow do you expect to see the Father?
Speaker BIf you knew me, you would at the same time know the Father.
Speaker BWell, that closes this reading of the scripture, friends, and I just want to thank you again for spending some time with with me here in the Daily Bible Refresh as we delve a little deeper into this passage of Scripture.
Speaker BJohn 8:12 19 Jesus says, I'm the world's light.
Speaker BNo one who follows me stumbles around in the Darkness.
Speaker BBut the leader is pushed back.
Speaker BAll we have is your word, and that's just not good enough.
Speaker BAnd Jesus answers that his witness is trustworthy because of the largeness of the One who sent him, not the narrowness of self.
Speaker BIf you know Jesus, you'll know the Father.
Speaker BAnd God's presence is right here, even when we miss out on it.
Speaker BSome powerful, Some powerful information here.
Speaker BSo let's go a little bit deeper with three teaching points.
Speaker BI call them points to ponder from a progressive perspective.
Speaker BThe first is light is liberation, not a spotlight of shame.
Speaker BWhen Jesus says he's the world's light, he isn't threatening exposure to embarrassed people.
Speaker BHe's offering clarity so we don't keep tripping.
Speaker BA progressive reading treats light as what reduces harm.
Speaker BTruth telling that heals, transparency that protects the vulnerable and pathways out of stigma.
Speaker BIf our light makes people hide, it's not Jesus kind of light.
Speaker BHis light dignifies and guides.
Speaker BSecond point, we judge from largeness, not narrowness.
Speaker BJesus contrasts narrow surface level judgments with God's expansive vision.
Speaker BProgressive discipleship resists snap judgments based on what we can see and touch.
Speaker BThose are limited ways.
Speaker BLimited ways like appearances, stereotypes, class, race, orientation, physical health and illness.
Speaker BWe choose trauma, informed curiosity, listen to lived experiences and let marginalized voices shape our perspective.
Speaker BThat's how we move from small reactions to big wisdom.
Speaker BAnother point, truth needs community, not just a certainty.
Speaker BJesus invoked the law's two witnesses, I.e.
Speaker Bhis word and the Father's, to show that real discernment is held together.
Speaker BProgressive faith practices, communal, accountable truth.
Speaker BWe read scripture with the oppressed center.
Speaker BWe submit our claims to the test of neighborly outcomes, I.e.
Speaker Bdoes this reduce suffering?
Speaker BAnd we pair prayer with science, therapy and policy that protects dignity.
Speaker BLight becomes a shared practice.
Speaker BAll this is about keeping knowing that the light is like a steady vision of kindness, of shared courage, and choosing people over posturing.
Speaker BLet's talk about an action step that you can take.
Speaker BPractice, quote a light check, that is take a few minutes the next few days to let Jesus light shape your concrete choices and actions.
Speaker BMaybe one area is in clarity.
Speaker BName one area where there's confusion or fear that keeps you or maybe others stumbling.
Speaker BMight be in a relationship, a decision, a system, and ask what truth here would reduce harm.
Speaker BSecond thing is proximity.
Speaker BMove towards someone who's in the shadows.
Speaker BText a caregiver, offer a ride to somebody, help somebody with paperwork, take a listening walk in a park.
Speaker BNot fixing now, just presence and listening.
Speaker BAnother thing we can do is amplify that is pass the mic on to those who don't have a voice.
Speaker BInvite a marginalized voice to lead or to at least be heard and affirm their idea publicly or back.
Speaker BAn inclusive policy in your workplace or your church or your civic group.
Speaker BLet it be gentle, let it be honest, let it be practical.
Speaker BWe'll come back and have a prayer here in just a moment.
Speaker BI hope that you'll rejoin me then.
Speaker BBut first of all, I really want you to know that we have a resource for you called the ABC 123 Bible study method.
